Ending The Brent Grimes Era

December 24th, 2018

Joe was among the first guys doing cartwheels on St. Pete Beach and buying women cocktails in South Tampa when the Bucs announced they were re-signing Brent Grimes for 2018.

Joe was even happy to pay Grimes No. 1-cornerback money.

It turned out to be a bad move.

Grimes was the best cornerback on the Bucs roster this season, but that’s like calling Dirk Koetter the best Tampa Bay head coach since Raheem Morris.

At 35 years old, Grimes has been run down and tackled by Father Time. His complete bailout on tackling Ezekiel Elliott six minutes into yesterday’s game was the final straw.

In 2016, Grimes led the NFL in passes defensed with 24. He was a monster. Last year, he was not as great but still good while playing through injures. Now he’s no longer a No. 1 cornerback and Joe suspects he’ll retire or play elsewhere next season for a lot less money.

The Bucs have made a lot of bad moves and non-moves at cornerback during the Jason Licht administration. (Why is Eli Apple starting for the Saints and not the Bucs?) Overall, Grimes was not one of them, but he was this season.

Joe hopes Grimes closes out the year with an interception Sunday. It’s almost unthinkable that he doesn’t have one this season, complemented by just three passes defensed.

Yep…he had a GREAT career despite the teams he played on….father time wins everytime…I wish him well after football

  2. Bucsfanman Says:

Father Time catches up with us all. Grimes’ play was subpar, to put it mildly. I noticed his “allergy” to tackling against Baltimore.

  3. sandwichman Says:

He stinks get em outta here. Also throw, Dirk, Me-Jax, Donovan Smith, Benenoch and Jason Licht in the garbage.

  4. Troy Says:

We are a better defense when he’s not on the field.

  5. tmaxcon Says:

Miko has been awful quiet this year almost to the point she knew this was a 3-13 roster and had realistic expectations unlike the ignorant delusional optimists living in denial

  6. Ndog Says:

This is not a lack of talent this is a lack of character, effort, and pride. He is an embarrassment to the sport with the lack of effort this year.

  7. Buc believer Says:

Miko has been quiet because she just can’t believe that Jason Gump was so stupid as to actually sign Gramps to this one year deal and allow him to steal millions more of Glazer cash! Now they can settle down in Miami and do what other Ex Bucs do…. laugh their asses off at the stupidity of the ownership and management.

  8. Bucsfanman Says:

tmax- All we have as Bucs fans is delusional optimism! When I think realistically, I have a reaction that forces my hand to my mouth with a tall glass of bourbon in it!!!

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  9. Ndog Says:

If you ask Bucs Fan #7423 and AlteredEgo it’s Jameis’s fault Grimes was brought back.

  10. El_Buc941 Says:

I say we go get Adam Jones and roll with Carlton and Stewart. Oh and Koetter can go but I for sure want to keep our defense coaches here. As for DJax let him go,I was all in on picking up Leveon Bell but I think with a rebuild on the OLine Peyton babrer has been have good runs(5+ yards). As for Jameis…let’s roll with him one more year, bring in a new Head Coach and let’s see if he can make something out of Jameis.

  11. El_Buc941 Says:

As for that fumble Jameis had yesterday, totally not on him,he went through the pocket like water through your fingers. I blame it on the OLine for not playing through the whistle. Gregory got locked up at the line and someone didn’t hold him there. I feel like our offense is too predictable.

  12. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

    Yep joe sees it

Grimes just out their collecting a paycheck

Just like big fat softie Gerald big fat softie McCoy

  13. Jameis Wienstien Says:

Lol @ the keyboard GMs on this site calling a professional athlete (a 4x pro bowler at that) an embarrassment to the sport. The only embarrassment to the sport on this team (if there is one) would be the crotch-grabbing, crab legs-stealing, obscenity-yelling, interception-throwing, turnover-prone, short-tempered, foul up (G-rated) machine who is currently the starting QB.

  14. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

This is the result of keeping ( or re-signing ) a player a year too long vs moving on. It doesn’t seem like he really wanted to play this season. At any rate…a Vincent Jackson-like severance check to close out his career.

  15. Issaic haggins Says:

Grimes is here because Licht was delusional when it came to fielding 3 quality corners in this division . He has had ample opportunity to plug in very good experienced vets ( not 35) every year and he just seems to have this internal in smarter than the world mentality!!! If there are two areas he has got this I’m smarter than everyone, hey look at me battle it’s o line and corner ………….. This year he addressed corner but did he really think rookie corners are going to come in and get you to the playoffs , we’ll if he did , he’s robbing team Glazer just like Grimes is !!! Guy with a great career totally goes Turtle , what a piece of non competitive garbage ( this year) .

  16. bucsnole Says:

This defense will be better without him.
He’s been playing soft far too long.
And was easy for OCs to scheme against

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Saw Grimes watching others making tackles in Baltimore & Dallas targeted him successfully……Grimes coasted this year…..

We need an infusion of youth and passion…..

Time to dump Gholston, Curry, Grimes, Djax, Dotson and yes….probably GMC.

Lets get a younger coach on the way up with a passion for winning.

  18. Bucamania Says:

Grimes loves to watch other people tackle. Dude mailed it in this year. Terrible.

  19. tmaxcon Says:

    Jameis Wienstien

if it was not for the Weinstiens in the world taking one for the team your wife would not be able to find work.

  20. Kobe Faker Says:

“I love taking money from right people”

    Miko

  21. tmaxcon Says:

    Bucsfanman

i have to blame bucs myself for the ability to distinguish over 7 bourbon flavors without hesitation.

merry xmas my man hope you and your family have a great day and a prosperous new year.

  22. nate s Says:

    Finally Joe you get it!

  23. TOM Says:

Another example of the stupid decisions no clue Licht has made. Licht you should quit before your fired. Licht is also in part the reason Koetter gets fired. Glazer’s, I hope youhave the sense to fire him.

  24. LakeLand Says:

Brent Grimes can still play for a contender
    He’s still a serviceable CB
But the Bucs wanted him to be their #1 CB

    That he’s not

  25. NPRSageBoy Says:

    Father Time is still undefeated

  26. joestang Says:

Grimes better days are behind him, he is now a liability. Not 1 splash play this year from Grimes, time to move on. PS this was another Licht decision, FIRE LICHT.

  27. ManzielMadness Says:

He never loked liked he put any effort into his play this season. Bucs got played again.

  28. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

What a complete waste of a signing. Father Time waits for no one.

  29. OneBucPerson Says:

Bye Felicia, take your loudmouth wifey with you into retirement.

  30. Deborah Hall Says:

To all the hater’s of my son (Brent), no weapon formed against him shall prosper. I am so glad he doesn’t have social media and will be glad when this is over so that the commenters on here can find something else to write about. It’s funny how people will talk trash on here, but won’t say it to his face or my daughter-in-laws. There will a lot said soon, like the truth. 🤫

  31. Gman Says:

I like Grimes, but it is time for him to spend 24/7 with his trash wife Miko. Sad that certain media members and their knuckle dragging followers showered her with praise and adulation. Ridiculous actually.

  32. tmaxcon Says:

    Deborah Hall

i have much respect for mr grimes. No one survives the black hole that is tampa bay buccaneer football led by cancer93 the doll playing clown.

  33. Bucsfanman Says:

    tmax- Thanks bro!
BTW, I mentioned that I like my crow rotisserie-style. Don’t wait to get my bird on the spit. I like it tender! What bourbon variety should I pair with my GMC-crow?!
One more game. Now, what if he pulls off a Donald-like effort (3 sacks)? That’s double-digit territory. Do you have your “crow speech” written?

    Off topic, sorry!

  34. tmaxcon Says:

    Bucsfanman

damn, dude I suggest Evan Williams when digesting crow. It’s cheaper yet not ghetto. Evan is a little underrated.

  35. tmaxcon Says:

    bucsfanman

i know joe has backed down some evan in his day before becoming such a rock star. obviously, now that joe is above every day peeps he has moved on to 12-year single malt at the minimum. ah, the good ole days when Joe was just a dude. backing down quality whiskey with bud light is your only remaining connection to everyday folks and trailer parks nationwide. they earned the success by providing quality free entertainment for years though. Another area Joe does not receive enough credit is for providing the special needs community led by SCbucsfan, NCBucfan, Bonzi, Pickgrin etc… etc…. a platform for their delusional thoughts asinine assumptions and downright foolish optimism. well done joe… Nobel Peace Award type s**t there

  36. TampaTown Says:

I think if and when Brent retires Miko will unleash the truth and I hope she does. She’s shown a lot of class by keeping a lid on it this year, which must be very hard to do. She’s also a great wife and mother so why is she “trash” for being opinionated? This town has not given either one of them the appreciation they both deserve. Good luck to the entire Grimes family on your next endeavor.

  37. Joe Says:

Joe is still a proud consumer of Bud Light!

You couldn’t pay Joe to drink some frothy malt!

  38. Bucsfanman Says:

tmax- LMAO! Evan Williams huh?! I was thinking high-brow like you said Joe’s onto! I might have to panhandle a few more bucks out in back of my trailer park though! LOL!

Joe- I ain’t mad at you for drinking Bud Light. Lord knows I’ve consumed my fair share at the Den of Depression!
Great job with the site Joe, it’s always interesting, and certainly entertaining.

  39. Bucsfanman Says:

Real classy taking shots at Brent’s wife, Miko! Real classy!
I would say a few more choice “things”, but not today. Not on Christmas Eve. Ya’ll got to live with yourselves. I hope everyone remembers the Golden Rule as we move into the next year.
Seems like we could use a LOT more of it!

  40. Max Says:

he’s too old for sure you could visibly see it in his game play against dallas

  41. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I would bench him. If he doesn’t want to go out playing with heart and intensity then he doesn’t deserve to see the field. He has been absolutely pathetic this season and the defense plays better when he’s out. I’ve been a big fan of Grimes but he has obviously cashed it in and is just playing to not get hurt. Bye, bye.

  42. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    tmaxcon

Happy to see that my brotha is alive – and doing well

  43. PSLBob Says:

Bucsfanman, shoulda known you were a bourbon man. Cheers! And Merry Christmas back to ya!

  44. unbelievable Says:

Appreciate what Brent did for this team in the past… he’s had one hell of a career.

But he’s been a liability this year. I would not even call him our best cornerback this season to be honest. And that’s not a knock on his skills, just the reality of father time winning out in the end.

    Good luck in life Brent.
