Demar Dotson Talks “Tanking It”

December 30th, 2018

“Mark, at least we didn’t tank again.”

The Bucs tanked the 2014 season finale by resting key players to help secure the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

Right tackle Demar Dotson was on that team.

Today, the Bucs made the organizational decision to try their very best to win, yet they still lost. And it was glorious for their draft position and for thinking Bucs fans who care most about the big picture. A new head coach, and possibly a new GM, will arrive with more options in the draft.

Joe asked Dotson after the game about being part of a team that rested starters in 2014 and if he was happy the team went all out this year in a similar situation.

The funny thing was, as Joe referenced 2014, Dotston interrupted Joe and said “tanking it.” Then he explained that it was full-go for the Bucs in preparation for the Falcons.

“Yeah, going into this game there was not doubt in my mind that, you know, we weren’t going to try to tank the football game,” Dotson said. “That’s not who Dirk is and that’s not the mindset of this football team. We were just coming out here to win a football game. You know, we wasn’t worried about the record. It wasn’t about not going to the playoffs. We were genuinely trying to win a football game.”

Let’s hope the “tanking” subject is never a discussion again in Tampa.

The Falcons went into the game thinking of tanking but after a half of playing bad ball they said enough is enough then turned it on !

    Amen Joe.

If they were “genuinely” trying to win the genuinely did a horrible job!

    Tanking…

What place are we in our division joe?

    Last?????

    JTF…..”Joe Tank Fan”

I hardly think blowing a 17-0 lead at home to a division rival should be described as “glorious” for any reason.
    The losing culture lives on.

Now we can whine about who we select at 5 rather than who we select at 10….

    Still whining….

The truth be told (and the future may prove this true) our pick at 19 for OJ Howard may be one of our very best.

  6. MadMax Says:

Na, neither team was tanking….good effort on both sides and great for the home team fans there to see a good game played. But as usual, we showed why we need a high draft pick.

DT or CB…..then QB to back up JW. Wouldnt mind RB, LT or G too….its still too early.

  7. Roscoe the Pirate Says:

    Tank you Demar.

  8. Not there yet Says:

Embarrassment to the league to be in the basement with offensive players like this and a team decimated on defense. No way dirk should keep his job. Pathetic head coach. He says his quarterback played great and still can’t win against a team like that

  9. Bucnut2 Says:

We’ll be talking tanking as long as Winston is the starting QB for this team

Remember when you tanked for a #1 pick QB in 2014 for 2015 and you’re still drafting top 10? Remember when this site and the BucsMob founder said “You simply tank to get the QB and this guy will fix OL with his play, he overcomes any weaknesses on your team.” Well about that…. still riding it? LOL

  12. scbucsfan Says:

You got what you wanted Joe, a L. Too bad we won as much as we did.

  13. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

So, bu not tanking it, it was a regular 2018 game in which they had yet another mental collapse. Whew! Thanks for NOT tanking Bucs.

Bucs fans will always find something to complain about. The “losing culture” we have around here has nothing to do with the fans. Most of the fans wanted the Bucs to lose today, wether on purpose or not, and the Bucs responded by playing one of their best games all year (not saying much) and not laying down to try to lose. The losing culture is a team problem, not the fans.I know a lot of Giants, 49ers and Jags fans who are diehards and live through thier teams. Not one of them wanted thier team to win today. They look at the big picture. I wanted the Bucs to win today and was going crazy every time we scored, but it really didn’t matter either way. We all want the Bucs to win, and we all want the Bucs to draft well. A higher pick is the better chance to draft a better player in each round. It doesn’t make it certain, but it doesn’t hurt. The draft is about hope for the future, which is all the Bucs have given us for the last decade, hope. And for the guys who post about OJ being a great pitch at 19, there’s a reason he was still there at 19. There are many more positions that help teams win than a TE. I would have liked to see a win today, but it wouldn’t have helped anything. I’m just glad they looked good at times and played with effort.

Please Joe get all your tanking articles out tonight. Our new season starts tomorrow.

I’d like to know where you got this stat…..because I think you are very wrong about that. Most fans wanted to win…..and most fans are happier that at least in the loss we get a better pick. (nothing wrong with that)

There is a huge disconnect with fans who want to lose and the players and coaches who want to win.

I am seeing many games today by teams who have nothing to play for but they are all trying as hard as they can to win, as they should.

  20. The Buc Realist Says:

Some have the feeling that they will be cheering for tanking for a “real” qb after next season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. BuccaneEric75 Says:

TampaBay, I got the stat from the JBF poll that was posted sometime before the game.

  22. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

My Falcons friend was saying the same dang thing,”I hope we lose so we get a better pick than you.”
He must not be a real fan. I will inform him.

  23. Aceofaerospace Says:

I guarantee you, I am never concerned about our draft position when the Bucs make the playoffs. Sooo, how about making the playoffs! Do your jobs!

  24. Defense Rules Says:

@JimmyJack … “Our new season starts tomorrow.” Amen to that JimmyJack. Seems appropriate to me that this season finished on Dec 30th instead of carrying over into Jan like our 2015 & 2016 seasons did.

“Out with the old; In with the new” as the saying goes.

Time for (yet another) fresh start. And with it (hopefully) will come renewed optimism that future Bucs teams will once again be RELEVANT … as in ‘playoff contenders’ come future Januarys. Many ‘doormat’ teams have experienced turnarounds in recent years. Why not us.

OK….i saw it….so I concede that most JBF wanted to lose…but that is not by any means a scientific poll and it is completely biased by Joe’s constant support of tanking…..

This is a very sad state of affairs for sure……and…FYI, I didn’t vote….so add me to the wanting to win minority.

  26. Buccaneerscotty Says:

    He’s fired

  27. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Defense, 2019 starts now! We CAN turn to around in one year. With the Draft, FA, and the new coaching staff/or just our current staff getting better, we can make a jump next season. At least we showed we could score 30 without DJax. That’s a plus. Now if we can fix the defense, wait, Koetter was just fired. Forget the part about our current staff getting better.

  28. Drew Says:

No more excuses for Joe or Jameis. Koetter is gone. Tell me why again our organization can’t figure it out?

  29. DB55 Says:

    Joe

Let’s see how the glazers mess up the Arians hire.

  30. BuccaneEric75 Says:

TampaBay, I don’t think anyone supports tanking. There’s a difference between what the fans want and what the team wants. Tanking would be the team losing on purpose. I don’t know anyone who wants them to purposely lose. Fans who want them to lose want them to try to win and give max effort. I think they gave it their all today. I didn’t vote either. I would have voted for them to lose if I saw the poll in time, but once the game started I was cheering like it was the first game of the season.
