Best Coach Available

December 12th, 2018

Decision.

The following term makes Joe’s skin crawl.

During NFL draft season, you will hear people parrot the misleading if not false narrative, “Best player available.” That may be the absolute worst, most irresponsible draft philosophy known to man.

Not only would that lead team to not address a need, it would be irresponsible. So a team should draft a guy that would likely sit? Unreal!

But when it comes to what Team Glazer decides about whether to move on from Bucs Bit-O-Honey-snacking, Ozark-loving, yams-eating coach Dirk Koetter, Jenna Laine of ESPN believes if the pool of available candidates doesn’t excite Team Glazer, they may just elect to stay the course with Koetter.

Similar to last season, the Bucs’ decision to retain Koetter or let him go will come down to the supply and demand of available coaches as the Browns and Green Bay Packers have already thrown their hats into the ring.

It’ll also come down to what types of changes prospective coaches will want to make and how much roster control they will want. There are coaches who may want to come in with their own general manager who shares the same views in terms of organizational structure, schemes and talent evaluation.

It is a widely held belief — confirmed by no one, even though Joe tried his best to get Chucky to talk last February at the combine — that had Chucky not turned down Team Glazer last fall, he would be roaming the sidelines for the Bucs (again) and not Koetter.

Joe believes we can all agree the Bucs dodged a major bullet there.

Gruden would have gotten us the #1 overall draft pick. How is that dodging a bullet?

  2. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

lol Theodore, yes Joe, we dodged a bullet.

  4. AlteredEgo Says:

I think if the followed anyone of the mock drafts the Bucs would be just as well off….

  5. Dewey Selmon Says:

problem is if the best man for the job is on a team that goes deep into the playoffs we could wait 2-3 weeks after the season finale.

“Joe believes we can all agree the Bucs dodged a major bullet there.”

And why is that? Both sh!tty teams that aren’t getting into the playoffs. Chuckys one a SB (No chance in hell Koetter will). Raiders are stacked with picks, likely the #1, and have tons of cash for the new cap increase. They didn’t send Mack and Cooper away because they were being stupid. See what talent they can produce compared to the Bucs in the next few years.

  7. SOEbuc Says:

    *Chucky’s won a SB

  8. deminion Says:

    #1 Chris Petersen

  9. AlteredEgo Says:

Well we have the best coach available

  10. Ra'Shad Says:

Chucky won super bowl because of Kiffin, Sapp, Brooks, Barber, Lynch, Smith, Jackson, Rice… Do I need to go on ? Give Dirk/Winston a defense that will hold a 14 point lead and watch what happens.

  11. Loyaltotheend Says:

Gruden can’t draft and develop talent he’s awful and will be fired by year 5 as he will draft bust after bust

  12. adam from ny Says:

we are now known as the ybor city buccaneers

  13. Robert Says:

any coach who approves of jameis gets joe’s vote

and chris simms is the guava-spleen chuckaneer

  15. Eric Says:

Chucky will turn it around in Oakland. Nice win vs. Raiders. Three number ones next year.

Funny how Joe will give the local incompetents years and years and years, but buries Chucky in his first year with the Raiders.

Wont play out that way IMO

I could have gotten us the #1 overall draft pick. So could anyone else here.

  17. SOEbuc Says:

Can we get Vinik and Jon Cooper over here #GO BOLTS!!!

  18. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ @SOEbuc, yes GO BOLTS, on this we can agree

  19. Joe Blahak Says:

John Fox has been a pretty good coach in NFL …might fix the defense..

  20. AlteredEgo Says:

So many folks here have no appreciation for the sweet nuance and exquisite patience displayed by L&K in building the Bucs…patience Coach Hoppers

  21. tmaxcon Says:

It should read Best Coach Willing to Commit Career Suicide by working for glazers….

  22. OneBucPerson Says:

If we lose 2 of the next 3 games (hopefully we lose them all) there is no chance Koetter is brought back. Best case scenario (for us) he’ll be facing a 4 game losing streak. You can’t keep him after that because it’ll be proof positive that the team has quit on him. Time to move on. Guys like Ron Rivera (should he be available), Jim Harbaugh, Jack Del Rio, John Harbaugh (should he be available), Mike Tomlin (should he be available) Vic Fangio, and even Mike McCarthy sound a hell of a lot more appealing than Koetter at this point.

  23. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I think Chucky can still probably coach, but he has always and probably always will be terrible with people and evaluating talent. Giving him any control over the roster is a horrible decision, and will destroy any good he could do by coaching. Dude got rid of 2 supremely talented guys on both sides of the ball, and for what, picks? Lol, are you freaking kidding me??? What do you think are the chances he can get anyone even close to as talented as Mack and Cooper? I could give him 20 first round picks and he wouldn’t get guys as good as those two. Look, I am extremely grateful for Chucky and what he did for this team. I always will be. But that doesn’t change the fact that he is a very flawed coach, and he is absolutely destroying the Raiders. As long as he has any control over the roster, it will not get any better.

  24. tmaxcon Says:

Every single one of those guys will have options. Why would any of them commit career suicide by coming to the worst run sports organization on planet earth… really put your damn homer glasses away and be realistic? this is the worst job in all of pro sports. None of those guys are stupid enough to accept a coaching job with a small market franchise with no fan base and no hope for the future… jumping off the skyway is a much better option than working for glazers.

  25. Not there yet Says:

We can hire anyone to coach as badly as Dirk. Giving him another year will just be another wasted year just like most fans with common sense said when they decided to bring him back for this year.

  26. westernbuc Says:

So if the Glazers tried to hire Gruden maybe they shouldn’t hire coaches ever

  27. tmaxcon Says:

only way t his team has a chance in the future is riding themselves of glazers and career losers like cancer93 and dotson… i am surprised cancer93 did not file a #MeTooBeatUp claim after being mauled all day Sunday….

  28. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

We will have to judge Gruden 4 years from now. He was an average drafter here. Maybe his years away from the game helped him understand the game better at the college level. They will have a ton of cash to spend and picks when they go to Vegas. Which is all that matters. Losing Mack hurt them cause him and Donald are the best in the game but we will have to see what they can do to replace them.

  29. Rod Munch Says:

I’m not a fan at all of Gruden, but give me a break, this team would clearly be better off with Gruden in place. Gruden has been tearing apart the Raiders to get picks (although why he’d want picks when he has no idea how to use them I don’t get) and even with that, they’re only 2 wins behind Dirk and the Bucs – and they’re tanking on purpose – Dirk is actually trying everything to win and clearly has much better talent.

Again, I’m not a fan of Gruden, he destroyed what should have been a dynasty all so he could sign old washed up players like Charlie Garner, Tim Brown and every 35-year old injured offensive lineman he could find. In the next year or two Gruden will have the Raiders at 9-7 or 10-6, he won’t of course win in the playoffs without Monte, but he’ll be in the playoffs. Meanwhile the Bucs will fire Dirk, probably clean house, and then we’ll be back at 4-12 with 25,000 people in the stands for the next 10 years.

  30. unbelievable Says:

    @SOEbuc-

who cares about all those draft picks? We already know Gruden is terrible on selecting players.

  31. tmaxcon Says:

    Rod Munch

Glazers destroyed what could have been a dynasty by hiring a one-dimensional clown to coach the team and waste 6 years of Sapp’s career….. that’s what cost the bucs dynasty. dungy the clown wasted more hall of fame players on two franchises than any coach in history…. you can’t rewrite history because you like the overrated fool with a career losing record in the post season. dungy wasted whyce’s players simple as that….

  32. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“He was an average drafter here. ”

    —————–

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!! You can’t be serious! That’s the best joke I’ve heard…….ever. Like in the history of jokes, that’s the best one ever.

  33. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “During NFL draft season, you will hear people parrot the misleading if not false narrative, “Best player available.” That may be the absolute worst, most irresponsible draft philosophy known to man. Not only would that lead team to not address a need, it would be irresponsible.”

OK, who captured Joe and brainwashed him. Am I reading that correctly Joe … that you’re totally opposed to the BPA draft philosophy and that we should draft based on NEED instead? I personally believe that (in MOST but not all situations) but I was certainly under the impression that you were a BPA man based on some of your past writings. For the record, BPA has gotten us a number of excellent TEs & WRs. DLine & OLine & RBs? Not so much.

  34. ben Says:

Give Gruden a few years and he will be the man…

  35. 813bucboi Says:

    KRIS RICHARD!!!!!!

we’ll have to wait until the playoffs are finished tho….

if green bay can fire a HC who had them in the playoff race every year, why cant we fire an HC that has never gotten us to the playoffs and consistently gets out coaches?….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  36. Deminion Says:

    I like Chris Petersen

  37. Rojas Says:

Brain Kelly from Notre Dame ?

  38. Eric Says:

Actually Gruden is doing the opposite of what you Goobers thought. Not getting veterans, but rebuilding through the draft and stockpiling picks.

If only he was as good a drafter as the rock star, the apple of Joe’s eye.

  39. Issaic haggins Says:

Koetter does some very goodthings but the things that he doesn’t know and recognize on his own team are as bad as I’ve ever seen !!!

Licht biggest mistake is the same as Indy and that is protect the qb !!! Licht has been trying to play o line wizard in his own lil , I was a o lineman and I’m gonna show the world how smart I am !!! Licht you have showed us what Indy showed A Luck we have our heads in our arsssss and are letting our #1 asset get beat on !!! Well Indy finally got there heads out of their arsssss and the line is much improved

  40. Rod Munch Says:

Eric – He’s dumping veterans because they’re not “his guys”… it doesn’t mean he’s going to rebuild through the draft, it just means he’s clearing his salary cap situation up. Right now his leading RB is Doug Martin (who has looked really good) and his leading WR is Jordy Nelson and his leading TE is Jared Cook.

What do all those guys have in common?

    Old guys, cheap contracts.

Gruden dumped Mack because he didn’t want that much salary cap space being eaten away by the defense, he wants that money spent on offense. For Cooper he didn’t like him, he’s not a Gruden “grinder”, so he’s gone.

Getting draft picks, with Gruden’s drafting record, isn’t building through the draft, it’s just cheap depth for all those overpriced veterans he’ll be bringing in this offseason and next.

Just look at what Gruden did to the Bucs once he successfully ran Rich McKay out of town, he cuts John Lynch, he runs Sapp out of town, all so he can sign Charlie Garner to $5m a year, all those injured 35-year old offensive lineman at $2.5-4m/year, could give Ion Gold a big money deal and could lock up Ellis Wyms for big bucks. That is Jon Gruden for you.

Also QB collecting is extremely expensive, and Gruden clearly hates Carr, so a lot of this could be clearing space just so the team can afford to take the one year hit that would come from dumping Carr.

  41. Eric Says:

    @Rod

Of course he is building through the draft. Got five number one picks in next two years.

Actually Carr is coming around. Just beat the Steelers. As for destroying the bucs three winning seasons and two Division Titles in last four years here.

Please bring me that kind of destruction in the next four years.

  42. WyldKat Says:

Too early to characterize whatever Gruden’s doing, but I’m glad it’s not here again. Let’s check back in a few seasons.

  43. 813bucboi Says:

    where you at?!!!!!!!!!

  45. Troy Says:

Koetter’s packing his things and order a Canada Goose jacket for his return to Idaho. HE GONE…

  46. BeeBucs Says:

    This team needs Kris Richard!!!!!

  47. 813bucboi Says:

    beebucs

    BINGO!!!!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  48. Rod Munch Says:

Eric – Gruden didn’t win anything in Tampa, the team won because of Monte and his ability to keep that defense a top 10, and normally a top 5 defense, Gruden’s entire time here.

What did Gruden do on offense exactly? Normally a mid-20s ranking. When you literally have the #1 defense in football for multiple years it’s really difficult NOT to make the playoffs, but even once they got to the playoffs what happened? One and done.

Gruden is massively overrated, he destroyed the team that Dungy and McKay built so he could rebuild it in his image – and that’s what we’ve had since 2004.

With that said Gruden is still a better head coach than Gruden. I’d take Dirk when it comes to running an offense, but as a HC, as in running the team week in and week out, Gruden is worlds better. But that’s a low bar to judge people by.

  49. Rod Munch Says:

*…Gruden is still a better head coach than DIRK…

  50. GhostofSchiano Says:

Got my seat reserved for the KRIS RICHARD train which will hopefully be pulling into One Buc Station in a few short months.

  51. BeeBucs Says:

Kris Richard would bring the fire to these guys. If we hire him…. he needs to bring his his kick butt lieutenant with him…… ROD MARINELLI! Make him Associate HC/DC. Those two will whip this defense into shape REAL QUICK and weed out the weak. LETS GO!!! WE (Bucs Fans) are tired of this BS!!!!

  52. Mike Evans Goat Says:

We need to bring in a president of football operations and completely take the Glazers out of the equation. Idk who that would be. But as for head coach, my vote is leaning towards Kris Richard.

  53. Buc50 Says:

Gruden is going nowhere. He will be the coach of the Raiders for a very long time and yes we dodged a bullet thanks to the guy with the bowl cut.

  54. Knoxville Bucs Fan Says:

Maybe I missed it but when has Chucky ever been a General Manager? As a coach he has input but at the end of the day he’s not that guy making the pick

  55. Brandon Short Says:

Somebody said that Gruden was an average drafter! That’s hilarious. Davin Joseph was the only player that had a decent career despite being a wasted pick (drafting the least important starter on the field in a right guard). Other than that, Cadillac sS a bad pick if you throw out his first three games as a pro. Michael Clayton sucked other than his rookie season. In six seasons his best players drafted by position were QB Chris Simms. Gradkowki, and Josh Johnson, WR Clayton, RB Williams. TE did he even draft a TE that made the team OL Joseph and Trueblood. DL Dwayne White and Gaines Adams, LB Geno Hayes, DB Aqib Talib… a horrible draft list for a six year period.

  56. Bucsfan77 Says:

Brooks for head of football operations

  57. Anonymous Says:

McCarthy and McKenzie tandem would be nice. The packers, south!

  58. joestang Says:

Joe you say taking the best available player is crazy. i agree, but we didn’t even get a good player in rounds 1 and 2. At least the best player available was Derwin James, we would have at least 1 starter from this draft class instead we ended up with nothing. the worst draft of all 32 teams. FIRE LICHT.

  59. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The Glazers don’t have to wait to talk to Jim Harbaugh or Chris Petersen behind closed doors. They are coaching college. Jim can covertly convince John to be a coordinator for him.

If you want the losing to really stop, go with the guys who have overwhelming success, not just barely over 55% wins. Jim Harbaugh went 44-19, 3 conference title games and went to a superbowl.

Chris Petersen is 136-32 in college.

As to the others you guys keep mentioning, they are horrible suggestions. You guys are just saying any name that comes to mind.

  60. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Grudens raiders will be back in playoffs before bucs are. If bucs hired gruden what difference would it have made? the bucs are in disarray now thanks to licht. Hire Saban & give him president & HC,

  61. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    joestang Says:
    “…we didn’t even get a good player in rounds 1 and 2…”

    That is complete Bullspit.

For you to even say that invalidates everything you say.

  62. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Kris Richard. Give me a break. He has done literally NOTHING!

  63. Vinny Says:

My point I’ve been saying, grass ain’t always greener. Koetter is learning on the job and so is licht. First time coach and first time GM. Both going through learning periods. Get some o-line help and some more defensive vets and bring back Koetter and Duff and watch this team next year… WATCH

  64. Vinny Says:

And everyone talks about Koetter not being able to get a number 1 running back. Who’s job is that his or Licht’s???? ….. ???? Think about it. A lot of holes on this team and your telling me Dirk not only has to coach this team but draft and sign guys too? Then what is Jason Licht doing?????

  65. MHBuc25 Says:

Pay Peyton Manning 20 million to be the head coach/QB to get back in the playoffs again.

  66. adam from ny Says:

the pic above is a nice pic of the 4 glazer boys…now where’s he coach?

  67. TOM Says:

I bet Gruden & the Raiders get to the playoffs before the Bucs & whoever is HC

  68. down in the dirt Doug Says:

Note to Glazers:Thanks for keeping the Bucs in Tampa and being outstanding members of the community.
    Point.
having a president of operations is a coin flip. You have about a 50% chance of success. So why bother.Perception is everything. The owners, players and the fans will applaud your effort to change results.

  69. Joseph Mamma Says:

I for one am super glad we dodged that bullet. Whew!! He might have torn this team apart, sent every all pro we have packing, and canned Jason Licht. But now we can keep the Super Bowl foundation that the Bucs have built. When you got something this good, you don’t mess with anything.

  70. Rod Munch Says:

Knoxville – Gruden was the GM of the Bucs, regardless of what his official title was. He got McKay fired after McKay refused to sign an old washed up Andre Rison that couldn’t break a 5.0 40, and he went to the Glazers and threw a fit. He then hand picked Bruce Allen to be his “GM” because he was a “cap wizard”…. but anyone that doesn’t think it was Gruden calling the shots is completely nuts.
