Where Does Jameis Rank?

October 3rd, 2018

Looking up

If you ask longtime Jameis Winston fan and former Bucs QB Chris Simms, at least nine quarterback starters in the NFC are better than Jameis.

Simms is one of the most thorough and engaging analysts in the game, and he’s highly focused on quarterbacks. So is his Super Bowl-winner dad, who also has long been a Jameis fan.

The younger Simms intermittently ranks the upper half of starting QBs and he did just that with a breakdown in the video below alongside Mike Florio of PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio.

Joe recommends the video, but for those who couldn’t be bothered. Here’s how Simms ranked his top-16:

1. Aaron Rodgers
2. Patrick Mahomes
3. Carson Wentz
4. Matt Ryan
5. Tom Brady
6. Cam Newton
7. Russell Wilson
8. Kirk Cousins
9. Drew Brees
10. Philip Rivers
11. Ben Roethlisberger
12. Jared Goff
13. Andrew Luck
14. Joe Flacco
15. Matthew Stafford
16. DeShaun Watson

Well, the good news is the Bucs only have six games remaining against those quarterbacks.

Second, is Simms on the money? And if so, how will the Bucs become winners with a lower-tier quarterback, an unproven running game and a defense that’s historically awful right now?

Joe has written several times that Jameis is a good QB but average at best among his peers. That’s just common fact. So there’s no surprise in Simms’ rankings.

Somehow, Jameis is going to have to jump into everyone’s, say, top-13 list this season to avoid an unprecedented firestorm of scrutiny. The odds of his defense bailing him out more than once or twice are about as slim as Joe attending the Bucs cheerleaders’ holiday party.

  1. Deebo Says:

He lost credibility when he ranked Wentz over Brady…Are you serious? Simms is not in position to rank any QB..he does not know how to play the position.

  2. BrianBucs Says:

I’m thinking more like 14. Off the field I’m thinking 31

  3. Syl Says:

    That list is laughable.

  4. DB55 Says:

Mahomes > Brady automatically disqualifies this list. What is this the off-season? COME ON MAN!!!

  5. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Who cares. It doesn’t matter who you’re QB is when you’re defense is the absolute worst in the League. Not even Otto Graham could win games or reach the playoffs with this defense.

  6. D-Rome Says:

Jameis is not in the top 20.

  7. GhostofSchiano Says:

too bad Jameis can’t play defense…..anything would be an improvement at this point.

  8. '79Defense Says:

I can’t wait until the Packers have to see what life is like with an average QB. They’ve been going since the early 90’s with hall of fame quarterbacking. Over 25 freaking years, and counting. Around here we’ve been waiting for the answer since 1976.

  9. Dubcity06 Says:

Here come the built in excuses. Watch him play. If he plays well then good. If not, then the team is stuck. No defense, no running game. Jury is still out on the QB. But i dont see JW anticipate any throws, throw a guy open, lead a guy down the field. I do see him make boneheaded plays still tho

  10. I Bleed Pewter Says:

Fitz went 2-2 with this defense

  11. theodore Says:

I’ve figured it out. The Bucs defense sucks because Jameis is their practice QB.

    Prove me wrong.

  12. Jean Lafitte Says:

This may p|ss off some JW FSU fans but at this point even Fitzpatrick should be on that list ahead of Jameis.

  13. Patrickbucs Says:

Brees at 9? Goff at 12? Lol

JW has to show it in meaningful games now that he should be on that list period imo.

  14. NPRSageBoy Says:

First overall pick of 2015 draft and there’s at least 16 QBs ranked higher? What’s wrong with this picture?
At least, he’s ranked higher than Marcus Mariotta.

  15. McBuc Says:

How can he rank with half a game under his belt that was out of hand when he came into the game?

  16. BrianBucs Says:

    Jean

    Agree 100%

    NPR

    Exactly

  17. DBS Says:

So it makes a big difference where he is rated after not playing 4 full games.

  18. Rod Munch Says:

    Flacco? LOL!

OK there buddy, maybe when you removed your spleen they took part of your brain with it.

  19. Bird Says:

    I don’t disagree.

There are some seriously talented young qbs in the league now.

    Mahomes , Goff and Baker.
    Wentz too.

  20. Iron Wombat Says:

Below average O Line, no running game, worst Defense in the NFL, I think he’s got his work cut out for him.

Oh and the kicker will cost us at least one game this year.

  21. Lamarcus Says:

JW is anywhere from top 5-12 in NFL

See how u can make things/lists up base on opinion

  22. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Joe has written several times that Jameis is a good QB but average at best among his peers. That’s just common fact.”

And no doubt that’s why you call him “America’s QB” Joe.

  23. LakeLand Says:

There’s 32 teams in the NFL

So Chris Simms is saying that Jameis Winston is a below-average starting QB

  24. Oldtimer Says:

ABS Simms ir ranking the qb after 16 quarters. Winston played 2 quarters in a mop up roll.

  25. JimmyJack Says:

    Wow. He snubbed Ryan Fitzpatrick.

  26. Jean Lafitte Says:

    LakeLand

No @17 that makes him average, mediocre.

  27. Robert Says:

thats why we are trying out a new QB right now.

wake up sheeple. something stinks in tinsle town.

    who JW been rubbin?
    His agent making demands?
or did Fitz show them whats possible?

either way, they bringin in QB’s dawg!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. LakeLand Says:

17-34 is the lower tier in the NFL

  29. Robert Says:

  30. BucdUp Says:

Just heard the BUCS tried out QB Paxton Lynch recently.. they even merged his pic with the old bucco Bruce logo and dang is it funny!

On the real tho, we have Jameis, Fitz and Griff why would we even try out Lynch?

  31. BrianBucs Says:

When the 2015 draft was coming up, I said I didnt want the Bucs to draft Winston or Mariotta because I didnt think that either was a future championship winning franchise QB. I still stand by that statement today

  32. mike Says:

If we had any of those qbs listed except Watson, we go to the playoffs.

  33. DBS Says:

    Not with this defense.

  34. Oldtimer Says:

So where i is Fitz rank stats wise he shoud by top 6.

  35. Robert Says:

they tried out a new QB because the TEAM friggin hates some con man, cabby grabbin, crab leg stealin, FHITP, shoot em up bang-bang, the video disappeared, it wasn’t me winston talkin bout how he da man and gonna save em all AFTER
they just played the two best offensives games in history, the Defense looked pretty good and they came back in game 3 to almost win…

and he gone save them GTFOH with that bull$hit. Then his agent called OBP to complain.

write it down brah, we lose in ATL and he get’s traded immediately!

  36. Robert Says:

    don’t forget:

banjo music and 87 tied to a tree—squeeeeeeeeeeeee………

  37. JimmyJack Says:

Robert you aren’t rooting for our QB. Which team are you a fan of then?

  38. Robert Says:

I’m a fan of winning. we win more without JW

and I don’t believe a word of his lies. nor does the NFL or attorneys.

  39. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    @Robert

Only a truly stupid individual thinks that we are planning to part ways from Jameis because we are trying our a garbage QB for… some… reason.

  40. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    trying *out*

  41. gambelero Says:

Carr, Prescott and Mariota aren’t in the list either. Pick a few random times 2-3 years ago, one of Carr and Prescott would have been in the top five and the other in the top ten. Next year, of Cousins, Flacco, Wilson, Newton, Luck and Watson, about half won’t be on the list.

Mahomes is viewed as a savant. There’s an article in the main press–not the sports media–but on CNN’s main news page that Mahomes’s way of play is making everyone else obsolete. Throwing left handed or throwing on the run across his body again the grain and desperation heaves are lauded if they work. When they turn into interceptions and fumbles start bouncing into opponents arms instead of being recovered by teammates (100% of his fumbles to this point being recovered by his own teammates), those same commentators will talk about how bad his decisions are.

  42. JimmyT Says:

    Geez
None OF these QB’s would do squat w NO run game, bad o line & no D. I don’t know last year there were 4 games that Jameis had us in the lead only to have a kicker or the D give up the lead and lose! I could care less what SIMS SAYS

  43. Greg Says:

Jameis is done! The defense is inexcusable. You Jameis fans dont pay attention to the fact that turnovers kill you as much or more than touchdowns help you, especially if you have no defense. Jameis would have to score over 4 touchdowns a game with little to no turnovers… he just cant.

I hate saying it but we will lose with him at the helm and no way the next coach or GM wants to deal with his on and off the field mess. Fitz might have saved Koetters job but not light. Time for the glaziers to take out the trash… again.

  44. Trench War Says:

Paxton Lynch has practice squad eligibility, Griffin doesn’t. They probably only want to carry 2 QB’s after the bye. There are a couple of players ready for return from the I.R.

  45. gambelero Says:

Mariota, Carr and Prescott aren’t on the list either. Pick a few random times 2-3 years back and one of the three would have been top 5, the other two top ten. Next year about half of Luck, Cousins, Flacco, Newton, Wilson and Watson won’t be on the list.

  46. LakeLand Says:

Paxton Lynch did beat the Bucs

    Probably his only NFL win

  47. mike Says:

@jimmyT… Fitz, a career back up is 4-3 with no run game, no d and a bad o line for the Bucs and they just shipped his jersey off to the HOF for his preformance this year.

  48. JimmyJack Says:

Hey if you don’t think Winston can win that’s fair.

  49. JimmyT Says:

Deshaun Watson, Yeah he’s looking real good in year 2! NOT! In Jameis rookie year he led them to a 6-6 record before Kwon was suspended last 4 games. In year two Jameis led the team to a 9-7 record and in year 3 he was FREAKING HURT IN WEEK 2 & Koetter let him play 3 games w a bum shoulder, hence the inaccuracy everyone is hung up about. When healthy the last FIVE GAMES JAMEIS HAD A 75% Completion %. Jameis will NEVER GET A FAIR SHAKE HERE! My god what do u all want! Let’s see what Wentz does w all his weapons! They aren’t lighting it up either! But again Jameis is judged differently here which is WHY HE SHOULD BEG TO GET OUT OF THIS TOWN!! He will win elsewhere!

  50. firethecannons Says:

I totally agree–everyone of those qb’s are better than Jameis but the real mess is how bad the defense is

perhaps you could start some articles on potential replacements for Koetter and jason Licht and articles on potential qb replacements–and what top picks for the draft 2019 are out there–we will be a top five pick for sure. We suck and Koetter is doing nothing about it and Licht is doing nothing about Koetter and Glazers could care less.

  51. LakeLand Says:

    Yeah I just checked

Paxton Lynch has a career record of 1-3
I’m not sure if that win against the Bucs are his win
He did come in relief of Trevor Siemian
But I’m sure that was his best NFL game
94.1 passing rate, Siemian had a 141.7 passing rate, before he was injured

  52. BigMacAttack Says:

Jameis was pretty bad in Chicago. He has a big problem with long passes. He doesn’t step up into the pocket enough. I was a fan of him before but I just don’t think he’s the right guy. Trade Winston and McCoy now. Licht needs more picks to waste. The team deserves all the criticism they’re getting right now. Start Fitz in Atlanta, best chance to win.

  53. GhostofSchiano Says:

This offense will need to score 40 a game with this cardboard defense Sch!tty Smitty is running.

We could have Joe Montana and Walter Payton in their prime and we would still lose. FIX THE DEFENSE

  54. JimmyJack Says:

Just so you guys know……And it’s cool if you wanna squabble…….But you are squabbling about irrevalant facts.

Nothing that Fitz or Winston have done in the past matters. The only thing that matters is Atlanta next week. If Winston gets the win nobody’s going to give a crap about how bad you think he is. And if he gets us the loss no one’s going to give a crap about how good I think he is.

  55. DB55 Says:

Paxton Lynch worked out for the Seahawks too so I guess that mean bye bye to Russell Wilson! Hahaha you guys are funny!

  56. Greg Says:

People are actually making sense today. But why are we comparing Winston to Paxton Lynch? Jameis has better receivers than anyone you mentioned. Dont compare him to someone like Mariota who has had a defensive coach with a running game and defense but no receivers what so ever. Compare him to what you think Mariota would be if he was here. He is accurate, smarter, more athletic and would have our receivers… not to mention hes not a sexual offender.

  57. JimmyT Says:

    Mike
Come on that is a STUPID Stat. FITZ w a 4-3 record. So u think FITZ beat the JETS LAST YEAR? Did u see the game? All I know is this is a TEAM GAME & THIS ORG doesn’t help blowing 2nd round picks year after year and butchering the draft. JAX was dead in the water until they hired COUGHLIN TO RUN the Franchise. In two years from 3-13 they r a SB CONTENDER w a not real good QB. So keep blaming Every loss on Jameis and when he wins wherever he ends up u can blast the ROOKIE qb we draft after he throws 30 picks his rookie year. Good luck w that!!

  58. Greg Says:

Winston is a franchise killer. But Im not blaming him at all for the lack of running game or defense.

  59. JimmyJack Says:

What about a player coach? At least give the team a fun little story line to follow. We can all buy that jersey and wear it with a clipboard and headset to the games. It would make a great accessory with the beard(just saying)

  60. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs worked out Paxton Lynch today

I was mentioning the facts, why they gave him a tryout
It’s obvious they seen something in him, during his beat down of the Bucs
I’m not comparing him to Winston or any QB

  61. JimmyT Says:

    Greg
Marriott is smarter? And why do u say that? He had 13 TDS AND 14 PICKS LAST YEAR but he is smarter? So prejudiced u fans r in this town. Ask Jimbo Fusher who is smarter! Ask he head coach at Stanford who is smarter GREG! Marriotta would have been injured half the time here. U r CLUELESS!! I get it though! Mariotta smarter, yeah I get it now!!!

  62. Buc1987 Says:

Robert is taking his stupidity to a whole new level!

    Amp it up robert6!

    Good Golly what a dumbass.

  63. Buc1987 Says:

Robert…I don’t even have to fire shots anymore…….you shoot yourself.

  64. unbelievable Says:

Is this ranking based on 2018? 2017? their entire careers?

LOL, who the f@ck cares, honestly?

Bucs need to fix their run game and defense or we will continue to lose and then be rebuilding again for 5th time in 11 years.

    The 5TH TIME!!!!!!

  65. Blue-footed booby Says:

Still see people here insisting that Winston will get a second chance elsewhere. Again, for quarterbacks to get a second chance at starting in the NFL with a second team after being dumped by their first team just doesn’t happen very often in today’s NFL when teams can draft a fresh QB prospect coming out of college instead.

Off the top of my head, the only 3 quarterbacks since 2006 who have not only gotten a 2nd chance with a new team but also succeeded too are Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and Kirk Cousins. Peyton of course released by the Colts due to neck injury and Cousins refused to sign a new contract with the Redskins but the point here is all 3 of those quarterbacks were more accomplished and proven with their first stint compared to Winston.

  66. Gomez Mckay Says:

Total horse manure! Scam Newton ahead of Drew Brees? Hahahahhahahahahahhaha!

  67. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    NPRSageBoy Says
“First overall pick of 2015 draft and there’s at least 16 QBs ranked higher? What’s wrong with this picture?”

Hard to rank a QB for 2018 when he’s only played one half of football

  68. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Robert Says:
    October 3rd, 2018 at 5:17 pm
    “I’m a fan of whining.”

    Fixed that typo for you.

  69. LakeLand Says:

Paxton Lynch was a 1st round draft pick in 2016, and he’s out of the league in 2018.

That’s how it goes in the NFL (Not for long league).

  70. SOEbuc Says:

Aaron Rogers? Not at the moment. Russel Wilson at 7 in front of Brees, Rivers, and Rothlesburger? I dunnnoooo…..

  71. Buc1987 Says:

BigMac…Winston HAS to play the remaining games. He has yet to show what he can do this season outside of a 1/2 a game in the middle of a blowout. Had he passed for 90%, 200 yards and 3 TD’s vs Chicago….I’d honestly STILL say the same thing. You have to let the remaining games play out to find out if he’s improved like we saw in pre-season or not. It was not a mirage. He did look solid to close out the season too. That was not a mirage.

McCoy? That prolly should have ended years ago…..what can they get for him now? A 3rd?

  72. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

On topic, the only top QBs who matter are the Top 5. All the others change from year to year.

Also…top QB each year are not determined by opinion but by results, and the season has to play out first.

    So this list means nothing.

  73. Architek Says:

Only Tampa fans talk about Jameis Winston – he’s not good when compared to winning and consistently productive qbs.

  74. JimmyT Says:

    Architek
    Just BEYOND STUPID U R!!

  75. Jerry Jones Says:

How’s about we rank the F’ing owners.

  76. Dan Says:

Tyrod Taylor Sam Bradford Jameis Winston. Same thing. All ca have good games but will never be good enough to carry a team more than week to week

  77. Buc1987 Says:

Stephen A Smith.: Jameis Winston is the future and Ryan Fitzpatrick is ‘an aberration’……..

You’re right only Tampa fans talk about Jameis Winston…..

  78. Buc4evr Says:

Paxton Lynch, seriously? Sounds like the Bucs are hedging their bets with Winston next year and possibly looking to trade Fitz before the deadline. In the meantime, somebody please do something about this pathetic excuse for a defense. Forget Lynch, get some DBs and Safeties.

  79. NJBucsFan Says:

    I’d say somewhere between 18-20

  80. Ryan McGregor Says:

On the field 20, off the field 31 (Big Ben 32nd)

  81. denjoe Says:

    Cousins?

  82. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

Interesting how 2 games have helped change the narrative for this team. We desperately need to win the next 2 to change it back. If you look at the media, the Bucs aren’t going to win another game this season.

    I don’t buy that.

    #ReturnToWinningFootball

  83. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Robert is the idiot of this site right now. He will shut fk up once Winston proves him to be an idiot. Bucs are probably going to lose a lot with this so called defense, but it won’t be because of Winston. Oh and btw you dumb a$$ they could be trying out QBs to try and get a trade for Fitz. He has some value right now so they may be able to get something like a 4th or 5th rounder.

  84. ATrain Says:

    TouchDown

    The Defense doesn’t score TD

Oh wait yes they do and the only way this team wil Win is if they will

No Excuses Winston Fans. Fitz Win two games with this team
Winston is Awesome so he should Win most of the rest.

  85. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Not really that much related to Jameis but I still think this is an interesting point, why do we really hate the Glazers that much? Granted I know we haven’t done a lot of winning under the kids but it definitely could be worse (a LOT worse). We should be grateful as to what they do for us as far as staying out of the news and staying out of the spotlight, and not being associated with the stereotype owners like Jerry Jones, Dan Snyder, and Bob McNair, who are constantly in the news for all the wrong reasons. And a bit of irony, most teams hate their owners because they won’t stay out of the team’s business (again like J. Jones and Dan Snyder), constantly undermining the GM’s work, but here we are clamoring for them to get involved in the teams personnel matters. Just take a step back and be thankful for them, I know they aren’t perfect, but it definitely could be a lot worse.

  86. BigMacAttack Says:

Pittsburgh could use Gerald McCoy and the Bucs could really use Levion Bell.

  87. BigMacAttack Says:

Licht makes deals for middle of the road players but won’t ever move on a Superstar. Why couldn’t he get Mack, Calais or Bell? I don’t get it. JPP was a good trade but he’s missed others by being cheap. Wake up

  88. BigMacAttack Says:

I remember when they said they wanted to build a perennial winner. What a joke that was and still is.

  89. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Hey A Train how many more games do you think the Bucs would win with Fitz at the helm? This is the NFL bruh! Once they get some tape they figure out how to neutralize you. As was clear in the Chicago game, the jig was up for Fitz.

  90. ASSY McGee Says:

@JimmyT Says Mariota when healthy has been way more reliable than Jameis Winston he even improved on his deep passes unlike Jameis and unlike Jameis has a worse Wr Corp ! Jameis Takes way too long to deliver the ball meanwhile Mariota is Brady like with his release

  91. Robert Says:

Bonzai, Cg, 87-squeee from da tree- y’all cryin cause you know something is up.

And mad props for db55. We hated on each other long time. He ain’t jumpin when he could. So props back at him he’s right about Kwon and a lot of the defense. He’s one of those that we’d prolly meet, know ain’t neither one playin and we both gone lose, but still give respect. And he’s an educated bro that that can out talk me – don’t mean he smarter though.

Y’all just some dumb ass fools can’t even see what in front of you. That is a qb controversary. Like it or not.

An for the record I don’t like it, I wanted Winston to start…not cause I like him but cause I though he had the locker room.

    He don’t.

  92. Robert Says:

Fitz can win into the playoffs if they incentive the offense not to have drive killing plays. Like I said they mess up, they be a backup.

  93. John Says:

Whats up with an update on injured players that might be back after the bye week? Beau allen? Maybe a kendell beckwith update?

  94. John Says:

We should ditch benenoch and bring in richie incognito. Lol

  95. Season Is Over Says:

I’m glad to see this list takes garbage time stats into account.

  96. Sweeptheleg Says:

Everyone on that list is better than Winston.

The only people that disagree are the stupid idiotic blind moronic FSU fans.

  97. ATrain Says:

    Hey Touch Down

QB can throw all day receivers have to catch

Obviously Godwin and Evans wanted Jamies back

I also never said anything about Fitz

    Winston Lovers go to lines
    Fitz isn’t better
    Can’t win with this defense

    BULL
    FITZ WON WITH THE TEAM

NO EXCUSE WINSTON FANS HE EITHER WINS OR SEND HIM PACKING

  98. SteveK Says:

Excited for Jameis coming out of the bye!

I believe that Jameis will come out and play at a superior level when compared to Fitzpatrick: specifically regarding wins and the Touchdown: Turnover ratio.

Jameis played better towards the end of last season, it protecting the football has been an issue and a contributing factor towards losing football games.

If Jameis can’t exceed Fitz’s level of play the next four games, then I hope the best QB plays. The other 52 deserve that.

  99. SteveK Says:

Can we also compare The number of explosive plays with Fitz vs with Winston?

    That would be interesting.

Disappointing to say the least, I hope Jameis can improve the decision making on and off the field.

That 2nd INT last Sunday was worse that any of Fitz’s.

And, on Jameis’ 1st INT, Fitz took a simple sack and secured the ball. Jameis has a pitching machine wind up and got the ball/hand hit.

  100. BigMacAttack Says:

Atlanta has a depleted secondary. Hopefully Winston doesn’t throw passes directly to them like he did Sunday

  101. SteveK Says:

I do agree with 87, barring a complete meltdown, we need to ride with Jameis the rest of the year to see if he’s our $20 million QB next year.

I want to see our receivers get explosive plays, with downfield connections. Fitz has no issues feeding DJax. I want to see Jameis connect and give these guys the chance to get Yac.

I hope accuracy, timing, and decision making all sharpen up for Winston. He has the heart of a lion, and he’s only 24. Hopefully something clicks for him moving forward.

We would be blind to say he gave us a spark last game. He was ok, but still that one “wtf numbnuts!?” play that leaves you scratching your head.

Jameis is just as much on the hot seat as Koetter. And, I would argue hotter bc the Glazers have a $20 million decision to make.

  102. BigMacAttack Says:

I’d start Fitz again, give him some real protection and let him do his thing. He’s earned it IMO.

  103. SteveK Says:

    BigMacAttack,

Fitz has balled out this year. He may not be the most talented guy, but man I can’t argue with you.

His mistakes are on breakdowns in protection, a guy running the wrong route, or OJ not securing a dime over the middle.

When Jameis makes mistakes they just feel so much more disappointing. As a fan, it’s harder to empathize with his play because sometimes he just makes a dumb ass decision. That is bothersome.

Will the FSU and Jameis faithful acknowledge the TD: Turnover Ratio? Can the number one overall pick outplay a jounrenyman? For our playoff chances, I hope we see Jameis ball out. If not, play Fitzmagic, he ain’t scared to be great.

Fitz: 10.5 yards per attempt with 11 TD: 5 INT
    Winston: 1 TD: 2 INT

  104. ATrain Says:

    Steve K I agree

Winston plays test of the year to see if he gets the big contract

NO EXCUSES because Fitz won against two very good teams with this team

  105. LakeLand Says:

Atlanta secondary isn’t depleted. They still have Robert Alford, Desmond Trufant, Brian Poole, Rookie Isaiah Oliver as their Corners. They lost SS Keanu Neal and FS Ricardo Allen, Now they have Damontae Kazee at FS, and Jordan Richards at SS. Keith Tandy is their backup at both positions. They have the talent and experience in that secondary. The problem is getting the job done. They are not getting it done.

  106. LakeLand Says:

And Kemal Ishmael at SS, he started for Neal in 2016.

  107. Ndog Says:

I love these Jameis haters they are so delusional it’s funny. Just keep on hating fellas while Jameis is the QB for you favorite team. Makes a ton of since.

  108. Ndog Says:

SteveK you’re so right those 4000 yards seasons just happen to every 1st and 2nd year QB. Also his windup is so much worse than Fitz but didn’t Fitz have a sack/fumble against the Steelers ? But how is that possible with his tight throwing motion? Dude you just make stuff don’t ya.

  109. Gene Deckerhoff is my hero Says:

    Ndog… lol. Nice burn. H

  110. unbelievable Says:

Man some of you guys are either so dumb or just such haters it’s ridiculous.

Fitz throws an INT cuz the ball is tipped or he was hit during the throw etc., and it’s not fault.

Winston throws an INT under the EXACT SAME SCENARIO and you act like he’s the reason we lost, despite the fact that we were down by 5 touchdowns when he entered the game.

Does Tampa Bay have the absolute dumbest fan base? I’m pretty sure they do.

  111. T REX Says:

The problem is Winston fans think he’s done way more than he actually has…he’s usually the reason the team has to rally in the 4th. The turnovers are a HUGE problem. Turnover margin is about as big a stat as you can use in the NFL. You turn it over and your chances if winning go down by multiples the more you turn it over. It’s just too hard to overcome in an offense league. You can’t give the opposing team those extra drives while limiting your own. If he cleans up the TO’s maybe he will succeed. But right now, he ain’t crap in this league.

  112. SteveK Says:

    Ndog,

Good call! I missed the fumble.

No hate here! Just ready for top notch QB play!

    No excuses!

4000 yard seasons are awesome, we need our QB to take care of the ball.

  113. Architek Says:

It’s really funny that you guys attack people that’s speak objectively but trust me I live in Dallas and been a Bucs fan since the 80s and have a VERY good pulse of the national viewpoint in a major market.

JAMEIS WINSTON IS NOT A REVERED YOUNG QUARTERBACK AND TRUST ME HE IS NOT A TALKING POINT BEYOND JOKES AND DRAMA.

FSU fans can defend him all you want – I don’t hate him but it’s the truth. He’s just a guy nationally and to many Bucs fans just a huge question mark as the first year he came. What in his game has changed to date???

    – Accuracy
    – decision making
    – winning
    – play making
    – touch
    – footwork

Again, I don’t hate him but his rating is what it is. He’s just a guy man and you will see as the season unfolds and how the contract negotiations proceed.

I can think of multiple young qbs that are better than him right now.

    – Wentz
    – Mariota
    – Mahomes
    – Darnold
    – Prescott
    – Goff

Not even including the quarterbacks that are just middle of the pack. Don’t fault us non-FSU robots; look at the so-called chosen one with all the physical gifts but missing the details and accuracy that separates the good from the bad. All these quarterback have put on shows and at some point have displayed arm talent and decision making on the field that make them better.

Ahhh but who am I – just one person that argue with the masses but this team continues to fail to compete and lose despite the high price players and empty promises but I’m the problem.

Yeaaaaahhh. Very odd that Jameis finds a way to stay relevant for all the wrong reasons. LOL – yeh I’m stupid (so is your savior Winston)

  114. SteveK Says:

    Ndog,

I was comparing Khalil Mack’s sack of Fitz and Mack’s tip of Jameis’s hand and caused INT. I don’t think that was on Jameis as much. Not sure if the protection was bad and/or ball should have come out sooner?

I’m excited to break out my Winston jersey next Sunday. I hope he balls out! No excuses!

  115. Architek Says:

    Unbelievable –

I agree Sunday has nothing to do with Winston.

His NFL resume is mediocre at best. A bunch of empty stats and a lot of bad losses and bad performances from him that costs the team a lot of games as well.

And yes the defense stinks and it has been rotten but the INTs and Interceptions and antics and off the field stuff is just foolish to ignore like it don’t exists. Look no further than FSU robots.

  116. Architek Says:

    SteveK
You actually compared Winston to Wentz ???????

Bro you’re skipping some levels called winning and performing on the big stage and living up to huge expectations and leading his team to the playoffs.

Am I missing the correlation?? [Jameis no???]

  117. Architek Says:

Oh and 1987 before I go to bed –

Do you trust Winston? On and off the field?

That’s really the bottom line. I trust Wentz and Goff and Mahomes and others a lot more as far as leaders and being dependable.

That’s really the substance beyond the stats.

Winston brought this on himself and his on the field performance didn’t help either. Thus his low bottom ranking amongst his peers.

Hold him accountable not us non-FSU fans.

  118. SteveK Says:

    Preach, Architek!

I didn’t compare Wentz and Winston. There is no comparison.

Hopefully Jameis can ball out and insert himself as our franchise qb.

    @SwiftyBuc
sorry, you are incorrect. we would need to have a defense to be the worst in the league

  121. Buc1987 Says:

Architek….for the next 12 games I do trust him. That’s all that matters right now.

  122. Architek Says:

I agree with both of y’all gents – I’m tired of being a butt of jokes and my wife jokes at me and the Bucs just embarrass all of us annually.

I hope Winston and the team can at least compete this year.

BTW – Jason Licht should be on the horn with Coughlin right now for Fowler Jr.

  123. Buc1987 Says:

Rant and rave about this Jameis and that Jameis for the next 10 days….I’ll be here with ya…guess we’re all going to watch the 12 games together and us “Jameis Lovers” are supposed to decide whether he stays or goes according to some of you……YOU and I don’t make the call. The Glazers own the team.

Then again there’s robert who thinks that Paxton Lynch is the next QB for the Bucs, no not next season, but this season…..you guy’s got robert on your side.

12 games of Jameis and this crappy D. Enjoy!

  124. Destinjohnny Says:

    24th

  125. Destinjohnny Says:

Would u take tua over Jameis right now?

  126. Buc1987 Says:

    No not right now.

  127. Buc1987 Says:

I’m not knocking the kid….but name me the last 25 Alabama QB’s that did well in the pros….

Saban…how’d he do in the NFL?

  128. Trench War Says:

….he has 12 games to prove he’s our franchise starting with Atlanta’s ailing defense first. If Jameis really is elite he should be able to keep pace with Matty Ice and against our own defense. If Ryan can do it with his crappy defense then there’s no excuses why Jameis can’t do it also. The big question that sticks in my crawl is which of the two will play best? This is either going to be a shoot-out or a lopsided one-sided affair, and I shudder at that thought.

    Time to step up Jameis!

  129. ATLBuc Says:

The Bucs are working out Paxton Lynch. I think they are going to trade Fitzmagic to San Francisco

  130. Trench War Says:

really? I was sayin that 2 weeks ago

    people called me crazy

  131. Trench War Says:

    Paxton is practice squad eligible

  132. Blue-footed booby Says:

Definitely yeah I’d take Tua Tagovailoa over Winston any day of the week. His performance this year with Alabama Crimson Tide will far outshine Winston’s 2013 season and he’ll go on to win the Heisman trophy and the National Championship assuming he stays healthy. I don’t think there’s ever been a back-to-back Heisman trophy winner + back-to-back National Championship winner but I think Tua’s got the inside track to do so because in large part he’s so damn good.

I’d love to have Tua here but he’s not eligible for draft until 2020 at earliest and I still see a new regime picking their own QB next year which I’m fine with as long as it’s the right one for Tampa.

And yeah Saban did leave Miami Dolphins because he wanted Drew Brees but knew he was stuck with Daunte Culpepper when his team doctors ruled out signing Brees in 2006.

  133. Htownbucfan Says:

Kirk cousins lol u mean the 84 million dollar 1-2-1 QBs who does everything jw3 does that people kill him for. People get wrapped up in deep passes to realize it’s not going to be that easy anymore. Defenses have adjusted to the big plays we were getting by having 2 safeties back. So when u have only a 7 man box u run the ball which we seem to abandon way too early be it when have won and where we have loss. I watch the same arguments from people about winston and the reason y he will always get a chance is because he is 24 and has been in the league 4 years and still hasn’t scratched the surface of his talent. He was drafted to b the savior of a franchise that had absolutely nothing who let’s b honest lives on past achievements which is 1 superbowl and great defense. All of the offensive talent is starting to mature together and u guys want Ryan Fitzpatrick lol. Or Kirk cousins lol stop it just stop lol

  134. Walter Seidel Says:

Oh, Winston is RANK for sure….especially off the field.

  135. Kevin Says:

Matt Ryan is way too high. He has Julio Jones but is very mediocre QB otherwise. To put him at 4 and Drew Brees at 9 is laughable.

Winston not on the list is 100% correct though.

  136. JimmyT Says:

    Architek
Yeah Sam Darnold is better huh. That’s beyond ignorant. Ask Prescott? Really? If Jameis LOSES games I will be the first to say he should be benched. Show me when that has happened? Even last year JW threw a TD w 2 mins left at Bills only to have the D give up the lead. If we had a kicker we beat the PATS and against the Falcons at home Murray missed a 47 yarder to tie. We were down 30-10 to the steelers w a pick six & u WITS r making excuses for FITZ. There was a reason JW was the #1 pick, WE STUNK so TO not be optimistic in Jameis’s first two years is mind boggling. Last year he was hurt & yet u guys r ranking qb’s. Well guess what we have Jameis so get used to it.

  137. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

Mahomes Wentz lower them immediately for the pure fact that they haven’t started a whole 16 game season. As for our Qb Famous Jameis he is going to need to just play smart and we will win a lot of games.

  138. T REX Says:

@ JimmyT – Winston had a pick and a fumble. You cannot turn it over and expect to win in the NFL. He’s a turnover machine. Unless that changes his days are numbered.

  139. Jason Navarro Says:

Also not listed was Mariota, so for his supporters please stop saying we picked the wrong QB bc Jameis is clearly better than Marcus. Could care less about the playoff win they have a playoff caliber D. Go Jameis finish strong your career depends on it

  140. unbelievable Says:

    @Architckt-

I hear ya, and I agree with a lot of that too.

I can’t stand FSU, so I have no allegiance because of that. I wasn’t even in favor of drafting him originally, but once we did I and read through as much info as I could find about the allegation from FSU, I gave him my full support.

I’ve wanted better play from Winston. I harp on him plenty when he does dumb things. But I’m also trying to objective (which is hard for fans). I have seen a QB who has gotten better each year, and looked especially good when he got healthy the end of last season, and this year during preseason. So if THAT Winston shows up, I expect a lot of offensive production and I’ll be happy.

Of course if we keep getting down by 3 – 4 touchdowns in the 1st half of games, then I think he, or any other QB back there, will struggle mightily.
