Tonic For Noah Spence? “Work”

One big mystery of the still-young 2018 season is where in the world is Noah Spence?

This spring at the NFL owners meetings in Orlando, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter predicted Spence would be on the field on passing downs along with Jason Pierre-Paul. But Spence has barely seen on any play.

No, he’s not hurt. But so far this season Spence has been on the field for a grand total of four snap counts. Four! By comparison, defensive end Will Clarke, who has bounced on and off the Bucs’ 53-man roster since he was signed off the street last September, has 18 snaps through three games.

The curse of the second-round picks continues.

So yesterday when Bucs defensive line coach Brentson Buckner was available for questions from the Tampa Bay area pen and mic club, Buckner was asked what the deal is with Spence.

In short, Buckner said his time will come.

“Continue to work,” was Buckner’s advice for Spence. “There is nobody in this room that is a finished product. Some of them are more polished than others. Noah has some things he has to work on and he understands it. I keep that between me and Noah. He understands I am here to help him get better, to help him be the best Noah Spence he can be. As long as he is working, things will come around.

“One thing I take pride in with my defensive line is be consistent with who you are. Don’t be consistent being someone else, be who you are. Be the best who you are but you work on that every day. And that’s what he is starting to do.

“Hey, we are a deep defensive line, let’s be honest. His number is going to be called. This is a marathon, not a dash. His number will be called, he just has to be ready ready when that time comes.”

It sounds as if Buckner is rebuilding Spence from square-one. Tear down to rebuild.

Still, it is shocking to see how far a promising if not heralded second-round pick is now just barely hanging onto a roster spot, and losing playing time to a guy who is the pure definition of a bubble player.

I am excited to see just how good Buckner really is. IF and that’s a BIG IF Buckner can get some production out of Spence our defense would be better for it. I am rooting for Spence seems to be working hard.

this is as weird as the arron sears situation years ago…also 4 snaps is impossible to access a player, and just whip him out of the line up…so this is like twilight zone type sheet

  3. adam from ny Says:

with jpp and curry…then spence coming in with fresh legs we should be beasting…but we’re not

  4. adam from ny Says:

it’s like the bucs know sheet…like there is a jameis type situation about to pop off for him or something…it’s straight bizarro

  5. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Every player whether draft pick or free agent regresses playing with cancer93. He simply sucks the will to win and desire to be great from everyone he comes in contact with. RESULT PROVE IT

  6. ATLBuc Says:

I think it speaks to the inability of the previous D-Line coach to coach him up.

  7. Hodad Says:

It’s not Spence’s fault Licht moved up in the second round for an under sized 4-3 D end. I don’t think he isn’t working hard enough, he’s just not that good. Davenport, who had a sack for N.O. last night, is a rookie from a small school, but is playing, and making an impact. Spence can’t see the field after being on an NFL roster for three years. Put the blame where it belongs, Jason Licht. Another second round bust in a long list of many.

  8. Etzel Says:

I agree that Spence seems to fit more as a 3-4 LB, than a 4-3 DE…. Remember when we were all counting on him last year to be (basically) our only pass rusher??? LOL.

  9. adam from ny Says:

maybe mccoy sucks the animal instincts out of his line mates with his niceness…

mccoy : what you doing after the game noah?

spence : not showering…i’m clean af werald

mccoy: well i’m gonna read my favorite batman comic and drink hot cocoa in my batcave like a good little boy

spence : wow i was gonna watch some porn, but maybe i’ll be a good wittle boy like you werald

  10. Dapostman Says:

    @adam,

you seem to have a porn addiction. First step is realizing you have a problem. You probably should enter a 12 step program.

  11. Dapostman Says:

If Spence was getting to the QB at 230 lbs but isn’t at 257 lbs maybe he should stay at 230 lbs and just get after the QB. Play the guy on passing downs only. It’s a passing league.

  12. BucNole Says:

Well then give him some reps at SLB
I think he could beat out Taylor but need to see him play more.

Number 93 is an apologist. See the micd up segment from the Pittsburgh game when he knocked down steeler qb “Big” Ben rothlisberger, all 6’5 240 pound quarterback. He apologized over and over to him. Warren Sapp would never apologize for putting a qb on his @$$!

Reality-is-a-Beotch is 100% right on GMC, it took that micd up segment for me to see it. check it out if you can stomach it.

I got my proof after the micd up segment from the steelers game as Mcicecream apologized over and over to the 6’5 240 pound quarterback he knocked to the cold hard Raymond James grass. Warren Sapp would have never apologized to a qb for a knockdown. check it out if you can stomach it.

since the d has sucked for years…everyone is anointing buckner as this great savior or something…what if buckner kinda sucks too?…

you know damn well gmc is the main issue with the dline. he is soft, a quitter and could care less about winning. wake up sir you used to have a brain!

  26. adam from ny Says:

    @ dapostman

yes i agree we should try to add ron jeremy (the bayside, queens legend) to the coaching staff…he’d really switch things up if you get my drift…

    #IfYouDontKnowSaidDudeGoogleSaidDude

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

RiaB- Stirring the pot! LOL! I still don’t buy it. He can’t cover WRs and our DBs can’t cover at all. I throw quick throws all day against this d-line.
Can he play better? Man, I sure hope so. It hasn’t been exactly stellar play as of late.

  28. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

no Ron Jeremy references on a Bucs blog. Ron is a winner and would not want to be associated with such a clown like GMC nor the Bucs defense. Ron has more class than the doll playing quitter.

  29. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

McCoy probably is def not a positive on the rest of the defense but neither has LVD been, ever since schiano has left they regressed and come up with excuses and “we will getem next time” attitudes…loser speak…..and its probably just fact that spence isnt that good and in a long line of not good draft picks of jason licht and HUGE misses, like vonn bell, derrik henry, yannigue, Laremy Tunsil and many others…donald penn, mark baron, dj swearinger…all that adds up to a 5-11 franchise

I saw that Ron Jeremy got sued this past summer over sexual assault allegations….

Dear lord….truly no man is safe!

  31. Not there yet Says:

I think it’s pure irresponsibility with a pass rush this weak not to give this guy one single passing rushing attempt all year and I can’t wait for this gm and coaching staff to pay the price for stupidity. Not one single rush? Not even on third and long because I can see him not playing on third and manageable downs due to threat of run but otherwise it’s just irresponsible not to see what the guy can bring. Right now it’s a waste of a roster spot if you don’t use him

  32. AlteredEgo Says:

If he could …he would…simple as that….he’ll go down as a foot note in historical Buccaneer draft classes

  33. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

Hoping you can turn the corner Noah Spence big fan here

  34. DB55 Says:

Spence has 1 QB hit in 4 snaps so im not sure how he’s not producing or consistent. He may very well have two hits.

As for Davenport, Da’Ron Payne and Sheldon Rankins they are all out-producing our dline and we had a chance to draft all of them.

Instead we drafted the slowest possible NT and nickel corner.

  35. joestang Says:

another work in progress, we could be a farm system for the NFL. Def Line, running back, cornerbacks and offensive line are all a work in progress. Really.

  36. AlabamaBucsFans Says:

@DB55 “Instead we drafted the slowest possible NT and nickel corner.”

Almost ever pre-draft board had Vita Vea at the top of DT chart. How is 5.1 in the 40 slow for a 347 lb man? Da’Ron payne ran a 4.95 @ 311lbs. Rankins ran a 4.96 @ 299lbs.

  37. 813bucboi Says:

    DB55

davenport was a beast last night….not giving up on vita yet but damn….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!

  38. firethecannons Says:

I get the impression that Spence is a project that Buckner is glad to have. Do what you do best–Buckner talks in riddles but kids like Spence and Vea eat it up, I think they look up to him, damn Buckner looks bigger and nastier than Beau Allen in some pics.

  39. Bucsfanman Says:

DB55- Da’Ron Payne should’ve been the pick over Vea, IMO. Oh well, we’ll see.

  40. Joe Says:

Watch it Bama, you are going to ruin 55’s narrative.

  41. JimmyJack Says:

Forget Spence let’s talk about relevant players……..

I’ve loved the Vita Vea pick, mainly because I love building with big guys…….but have you guys seen Marcus Davenport(another big guy)? The dude was supposed to be a project but he dam sure doesn’t looking like one to me…..The guy can downright dominate. Something tells me that guy will go down as one of the best players from his class…..Hopefully Vea puts himself into that same conversation.

    GO BUCS!

  42. JimmyJack Says:

Why are you idiots looking at 40 times for DTs? And I don’t care about any of them metrics like wingspan and all that garbage…….but even I know then 40 times are basically useless for that position.

  43. __TGH__ Says:

Something is wrong with this guy. His weight fluctuations alone tell you it is mental issue.

    Moving on…

  44. Bucfan1988 Says:

Hmmmmm, what if we brought in NS57 as a strong-side LB and blitzed him off the edge on passing downs??

I’d like to see Beckwith move to MLB instead of Kwon. He’s in the wrong LB position. I think Kwon & LVD are both WLB’s…both similar.

I wonder if it might make sense to trade either LVD or Kwon??

  45. DB55 Says:

    Bama

Watch the tape and compare the three. VV took 5.1 to get to the QBs much less 40 yards. But wtfdik

  46. GhostofSchiano Says:

CURE for Noah Spence……a NEW DC

  47. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Noah Spence is a bust. When a 2nd round with three years in the league is a healthy scratch that tells you all you need to know. Outside of JPP this line sucks and if you can’t beat out guys off the street you are awful.

  48. Dapostman Says:

    @Adam,

whatever floats your boat dude. If Ron Jeremy isn’t available maybe Peter North is. See what I did there?

  49. Mike Says:

This is complete bs- this guy Buckner is a sorry clown
We have a very deep d line? How come we suck?
In Tampa unfortunately now D stands for delusion
    In stead of dominance.
