Mike Smith Better Buckle Up

October 4th, 2018

Brutal fallout of bad defenses.

Joe was doing a bit of research last night, and if Mike Smith can’t very quickly find a way to slow opposing offenses, it’s likely going to get very ugly for a lot of folks at One Buc Palace later this year.

The Bucs defensive coordinator is currently guiding a squad that is on pace to set the NFL record for most points allowed in a season.

The Bucs have allowed 139 points in four games, or 35 points a game. Stretch that pace out to 16 games and the Bucs will have allowed 556 points. The current NFL record is 533 (33 points a game) set by the (then) Baltimore Colts in 1981.

Joe looked up (via Pro-Football-Reference.com) to determine some of the worst defenses in the NFL in allowing points.

Below are the teams that allowed 480 or more points in a season.

Team, year, points allowed, season record

Colts 1981 533 2-14
Lions 2008 517 0-16
Giants 1966 501 1-12*
Lions 2009 494 2-14*
Bucs 2011 494 4-12
Saints 1980 487 1-15
Vikings 1984 484 3-13
49ers 2016 480 2-14
Vikings 2013 480 5-11

*- Head coach retained.

Of those teams, only Allie Sherman of the 1966 Giants and Jim Schwartz of the 2009 Lions returned the following season.

So as you can see from the list above, pushing for the NFL record for most points allowed in a season is no good for a team’s record and disastrous for its coach’s job security.

Let’s hope the powers that be at One Buc Palace can find the magic potion.

The three stooges over at one Buc (Licht Koetter and Smith) I’m convinced all have a job suicide pact. One goes they all go.

  2. Jerry Jones Says:

Well, if Mike Smith keeps up this whole walking the sidelines looking like he has dementia, only thing that will be forgot is his career.

  3. Tampaspicer Says:

If me(HC) and my dad(DC) were coaching the Bucs and my dad’s defense sucked as bad as Smitty’s I would have fired my dad at halftime during the Bears game.

  4. adam from ny Says:

this is definitely a balls to the chin type situation for dirk…

that’s why he grew the lil teeny bopper beard – so to not get tapped out by smitty’s sack-o-balls to early in the year…the beard will hopefully protect his skin from direct slappage

  5. Ray Jameis Stadium Says:

    Winston to the rescue?

  6. Kobe Faker Says:

    “So lets see Smitty has
    Old Miko Grimes
    Milli vanilli VH3
    Ryan Smith
    B!tch slapped Conte
Cant tackle little Kwonie Justin Evans
3 useless slow 4.6 forty draft picks and….

    Its Smittys fault?

Not 1 defensive back in our roster could start or play in any other 31 teams…..NOT 1 PLAYER

    “Smitty scapegoat propaganda!”

    Kobe Faker

  7. Bird Says:

This has been going on for 3 years …embarrassment

However, the owners and GM are waiting the results of Atlanta game…because with the bye…all players on defense should be back healthy except Unrein Maybe even beckwith?

So mike smith will have 2 weeks to prepare for this game. If the falcons score at will which is gonna happen…the GM (maybe even owners ) will approach Kortter with ultimatum…you know why …because Licht knows he will get canned too if season keeps going in wrong direction.

And if for some reason Koetter puts up a fight , then he will be gone too…

  8. BucEmUp Says:

It will ruin every and coach on this team. Guys don’t want to be here, it kills the motivation and will to come in and give it your all across the board. It’s like getting in a car and getting jacked up about a big race you’ve entered into knowing the engine is blown and it’s sitting on blocks. At some point human nature and common sense kicks in for all of these guys and they know it’s hopeless when the other team knows what your doing and your coaches w ONT change. I’m convinced if there was a league wide coaches meeting held.somewhere right now that Mike Smith and Dirk would be sitting in a corner right now holding hands all alone . Dirk used to walk around with such a giant pair of balls before he was head coach. Honest about everything changed what needed to be changed. He is so full of sh!t when he says it’s not about him and Smitty friendship.

The only reason I’m not excited about the next coaching staff is because we already know the Glaziers will fail to find the right guy in

  9. Bird Says:

    Kobe faker

I am trying to envision you in real life…but I can’t…do you need me to send help anywhere.

I get the trying to be funny angle but it just comes across very weird…are you like home all day doing meth?

  10. Bob in Valrico Says:

Much like Koetter simplified the offense in Jameis ‘s first year, Mike Smith has
to do the same. We have rookies and less experienced Db’s that don’t seem to understand or execute their responsibilities on the field. The KISS principal needs to applied. We also have to apply more pressure on opposing QB’s. When we do blitz, LB’s shooting gaps isn’t the only way to blitz. Change things up, install corner and safety blitzes.
That said there are contributing factors to this defenses failures,Licht has not been very successful adding players through free agency to the mix. Grimes is
far from a ten million dollar man at this point. Swaggy Baker was a total failure.
Robert Ayers age and injuries caught up to him. The Swerringer/ T J Ward
    signings were a debacle.
We should not be forced to play so many rookies DB’s as starters in their first year. Licht has been one or two steps behind building this defense. There should have been rookie DB’s drafted last year or the year or the year before to step in now! Relying on free agents so much often turns out to be a shorter term fix than Licht expected.

  11. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Of those teams, only Allie Sherman of the 1966 Giants and Jim Schwartz of the 2009 Lions returned the following season.” Oh Joe, tell me that’s NOT the same Jim Schwartz that all your sheep are begging to come here? The very same one whose 2009 Lions gave up 494 points to earn him 4th place honors in most points given up in a single season?

@Kobe … “Its Smittys fault? Not 1 defensive back in our roster could start or play in any other 31 teams…..NOT 1 PLAYER. Smitty scapegoat propaganda!” LMAO Kobe. Hasn’t anyone told you yet that it’s ALWAYS SMITTY’S FAULT. Oh and the corollary to that is that LICHT CAN DO NO WRONG. Fact is that this team is poorly constructed, especially on defense but also on offense. I think BOTH sides of the ball can do better this year than we’ve seen these past 2 games, but probably not enough to have a winning season.

  12. adam from ny Says:

the most absurd thing of all is they let tandy go…and he is playing for the falcons now…their player roster planning was all wrong – because if tandy was available, you can bet your azz he’d be playing mad reps right about now…major mistake at roster cut time…major

  13. adam from ny Says:

tandy = the “maxwell smart” of the atlanta falcons

    lol

@Bird … “This has been going on for 3 years …embarrassment.” Obviously Bird you haven’t been following the Bucs for very long. Going on for 3 years? Ya right. Try 10-15 years. Did you NOT see in Joe’s list which team is tied for 4th place in NFL history for most points given up in a season? Yup … the 2011 Buccaneers. (As in … SEVEN years ago?).

  16. adam from ny Says:

i saw fitzie at publics the other day shopping for food…he was really bummed out about the demotion…we spoke briefly, as he ordered chicken tenders by the pound at the deli counter, and stroked his beard while waiting…those chicken tenders are getting pretty pricey these days, but are tasty af…the beard order 3 pounds!

  18. Joe Says:

    Defense:

Schwartz took over an 0-16 team.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Schwartz took over an 0-16 team.” You’re absolutely right Joe, but as Paul Harvey used to say “And now for the rest of the story”.

Schwartz took over the Lions after our own Rod Marinelli led (?) them to a 0-16 record in 2008, giving up 517 points BTW (we have a 2nd-place finisher). Then Schwartz ‘improved’ the Lions to 2-14 in 2009, and reduced the POINTS ALLOWED to ONLY 494 points (shaving a dramatic 21 points off Rod’s record). The Lions did improve the next year to a 6-10 record, then to all the way to 10-6 in 2011 (ONLY gave up 387 points that year … 5 MORE than the 2017 Bucs gave up under Smitty). But then, the following year (2012) his team slid right back to a 4-12 record (giving up 437 points), followed by a 7-9 record in 2013 … after which he was summarily fired. Funny thing is that Jim Caldwell took over as HC for 2014 and the Lions went 11-5 that year, with essentially that same defense only allowing 282 points, a 150 point improvement (almost 10 PPG).

Used to love Paul Harvey BTW. Always got tickled by the way he’d always close … “And now you know the REST OF THE STORY.”

We are on record to have the MOST points against us in the HISTORY of the NFL. Yes, it is bad coaching. Every team has holes and good Defense coaches know who to adapt and work around it. Last year its Dline. This year it is DBs. Next year it will be LB. Before long we will be blaming the cheerleaders.

  21. Conte Piscatelli Says:

I keep hearing all the”we have to simplify the defense for the rookies” nonsense. You act like the guys have never played a zone coverage in their life. Or better yet let’s discuss the least confusing coverage available, man to man. What’s confusing about “cover the guy in front of you” I refer Mike Smith was all about we are going to confuse quarterbacks with our defense when he came in, and he was at least half right. I’m sure most quarterbacks have been confused about why we choose not to cover the receivers, but then the have time to figure out that it wasn’t a trap and shred the defense.

Oh wait so you are telling me Jim Schwartz coached a defense that gave up almost 500 points? That can’t be true, I’m sure I’ve read on the pages that he was the Chuck Norris of defensive coordinators. Legendary for never giving up a yard much less a point.

  22. Phil Says:

If Koetter refuses to fired Mike Smith he should be fired for being stupid.

  23. DB55 Says:

Yea Joe but Mike Smith is a really nice guy. He is just such a joy to be around. Why focus on winning when we can simply have fun. Bless his little o’ heart.

  24. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

A job suicide pact gtfo geez like joe said on his podcast y’all would have cut your arm off to be 2-2 at this point !! Let the season play out let’s get to midsession before we go crazy here

  25. Not there yet Says:

Dirk Koetter should be fired regardless for being incompetent and inconsistent, I don’t care that he’s a nice guy or that he has players respect, he’s not an nfl head coach based on results. He is what the 4th coach that when he’s fired will never be a head coach ever again at this level. Glazers are incompetent people who only hire people they can tell how to do the job even though they all know better than them what’s needed. Too many glazers making decisions and they still suck

  26. WyldKat Says:

When Buc believer said three stooges, I initially thought he was talking about the owners.

  27. Bob in Valrico Says:

I watched Revis the year he was here. He covered his man until he left his zone
and handed him off to the next player. Have seen M J Stewart have to follow a receiver
through his entire route. Nobody available to take over is a sign of lack of communication and experience. Most everybody in the back 7 appeared lost at times. Each players responsibilities should be written down and studied by players.
Hell ,give em a wrist sleeve with their responsibilities written on it for the Bye,
Something has to be done to try and get these young players up to speed. And covering the man in front of you doesn’t work if two players are covering the same man and leaving somebody else wide open.

  28. GhostofSchiano Says:

    Yes let’s simplify the defense

You,you, you and you rush the quarterback

The rest of you cover a man

They shouldn’t be able to screw that up

  29. James Walker Says:

The rules have changed since 1981.

lol….this is a “what have you done for me lately league”…..and lately jim schwarts has won a SB with a dominate defense…..

and I love how you glossed over the fact that it was his first time being a HC in the league and that he took an 0-16 team to the playoffs 3years later……

and while with the bills, before rex came in they finished 9-7 and ended the season fourth in the NFL in points and yards allowed per game with 18.1 and 312.2, while ranking third in takeaways with 30…..jim was the DC….

dirk cant even win 10games after taking over for a team that won 6 the year before…..let that sink in…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

Enoough with the mike smith rants. He not going anywhere nothing will chamge just like the last 3 years we get it.

  33. Season Is Over Says:

Why would the Glazer’s allow this record to happen?

  34. TOM Says:

Glazer’s don’t care as long as the money keeps pouring in. One way to stop this nonsense is to boycott the games. I know its hard to do but if the Glazer’s don’t care why should we. Glazer’s should sell the team.

  35. Buccfan37 Says:

Look at the potential bright side, critics may have to walk back their criticism of the Bucs a bit depending on how the rest of the season plays out.

  36. Buc1987 Says:

Licht has missed on a ton vs what he’s hit on….and some of them that we think he hit on….the jury’s still out.

Sell the team Glazers…you can’t do anything right. It’s starts at the top.

  37. Realbucfan941 Says:

    Kobe,

Yes the sign of a good coach is know what you have to work with and play to whatever strengths they may have. Also Nagy said it as well as Mitch. They knew exactly what was coming and had them beat by the second day of installs. Hello, poor coaching definition right there. Did you see how clueless they looked on the field. Getting beat on a play is talent… Not knowing your assignment is coaching, as is being predicable. Can’t fake that.
