“The GM Is Going To Be Run Out Of Town”

October 31st, 2018

“Wow Mike, that place down in Tampa has turned into a complete zoo since you left.”

Capt. Lou Albano, better known as former NFL coach Rex Ryan, is of the mind that America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, will only be a temporary fixture on the Tampa Bay bench.

And why is that? Because, Ryan claims, too many heads will roll in the Bucs’ organization if he doesn’t play.

Ryan, who is very, very tight with former Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith, might have been talking with some inside knowledge when he took to the BSPN morning show “Stay in Bed” and proclaimed that in Week 1 next year Jameis will start be behind center.

For the Bucs.

In short, Ryan said, it isn’t just Dirk Koetter who’s sitting on a griddle, but if Jameis stays on the bench Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht will be unemployed.

“There are way more factors than just the head coach in this one,” Ryan said. “The GM is going to get fired if Jameis is not the guy. So it is not just the head coach who is going to be run out of town. The GM is going to be run out of town also.”

Noted football analyst Jalen Rose tried to make the argument that journeyman backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick should start because his nickname is “Magic.”

Host and notorious Jets apologist Mike Greenberg said with scorn in his voice that Fitz, a former Jets starting quarterback, is no way the long-term answer for the Bucs.

  1. Wombat Says:

Wow, Jason go get Rex as your DC, then promote him when you fire Dirk coz he wants Jameis as QB….. simple Jason

  2. Pryda Says:

Rex Ryan blah Espn makes me vomit.

  3. Pryda Says:

Going to the gym I suggest everyone who reads this page go work out it will relive some stress from this circus.

  4. Hawk Says:

I’m putting my application in to ESPN, because I know as much as these guys.

  5. Joe Says:

    Espn makes me vomit

    That’s generally an accurate statement.

  6. Not there yet Says:

Everyone is going to get fired anyway. We may be better off with Fitz right now but people think that means winning games lol. If Winston is labeled a bust then looking at all the draft picks this year alone and only Carlton Davis is doing anything anyway licht is done. But no gm is going to come in here and accept that amateur DK as their coach. A new gm will clean house

  7. Kobe Faker Says:

“2 of the last 3 drafts have been historically bad and the coaches and fans are forced to watch these busts because the GM would look bad in front of these practice squad players. These wiffs in the draft caused us to try to compensate by overpaying FAs that also was busts from our Meatheat Gump. This is a snowball effect and for a bottom 3 worst team in the NFL, with all these holes to fill, we are in SALARY CAP HELL!”

    Kobe Faker

  8. Etzel Says:

LOL’d @ “Notable football analyst Jalen Rose”

  9. Buc'n Enough Says:

Licht is done…WAY to many draft busts at the premium picks.

Even if by some miracle they go 8-8…there is a house cleaning coming.
Jameis may survive….maybe a new GM and HC can get his attention, but this crap franchise will be forced to pay him the 20mil next year and the new HC & GM will at least try to improve him for 1 year, after that, all bets are off…

  10. JimmyT Says:

Jameis is NOT A BUST! He is not a David Carr, Tim Couch or a Blake Bortles! LAST YEAR NOT HEALTHY I can count 4 games that BUCS should have won had we had a kicker or a defense so don’t start throwing BS stats at me. And prior to last year BUCS went 9-7 w Jameis and an improved D AND his rookie year he had them at 6-6 on a PATHETIC TEAM! Look I get it he should be on the bench right now but NO WAY should he be thrown away! The TBT has an agenda to destroy this kid & so called fans buy into that BS. The Tampa Bay Times to me is no better than CNN & MSNBC. It’s sad their ENTIRE sports department is playing games w a person’s career!!!

  11. MTM Says:

Licht has been historically bad in the draft. His picks are either cut, suck or hurt constantly. He drafted a kicker in the second round that was cut. Enough said.

  12. NPRSageBoy Says:

Clean house and start over. Need a President of Football Operations to insulate owners from day to day. Dungy or Derrick Brooks would be fine choices.
Let that person interview and hire new GM and coach, review talent and decide strategic direction going forward.
In NO way should keeping Jay Miss be a condition of hire for anyone.
    It is what it is

  13. Jerseybuc Says:

Every talking head in New York thinks they know Fitz from his mercurial days with the Jets. One good game then a clunker. But isn’t it just possible he has figured it out late in his career, much like Rich Gannon did? He was never surrounded by this much talent in the meadowlands nor were his games as prolific as they have been this year.

  14. D-Rome Says:

He should be run out of town! He’s had terrible drafts for the most part. In fact, his best drafts happened when Lovie Smith was the head coach.

Do you think the Buccaneers draft Roberto Aguayo if Lovie was still the head coach?

Licht has had five years and the Buccaneers win percentage under Licht is *worse* than it was under Mark Dominick! The Joes say, “Oh, but I really like Jason Licht.” Why is that even relevant to the discussion? Sure, I’ll have a beer with the guy but as GM he should GTFOH.

  15. NewTampaChris Says:

You don’t get rid of a QB until you have someone better. So while I’m supportive of Fitz starting now, he’s not a long-term solution. The Bucs have to draft Winston’s replacement (if possible) but you can’t blow him off the roster. Unfortunately, our defense sucks so we actually need a QB to win games. So Case Keenum won’t do; we need Aaron Rodgers.

  16. Stravenite Says:

Not about GM / coach / DC or anyone else to blame, lack of progress due to JayMiss not improving in any aspect of the game and freelancing all the time, threw it to ME to give him his numbers, childish and amateur, just sit on the bench and get out
of here at the end of season, no trade because no-one is remotely interested in having a turnover machine.

    Simples

  17. Tom Edrington Says:

Have listed all my excuses for Jameis’ lousy performance below:

    1.

    2.

    3.

    4.

    5.

  18. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Noting that smith and ryan are tight and that smith and koetter are tight……this appears to be some shots fried at Licht and the very apparent crappy drafts and FA moves he has made as the GM. Obviously there is a huge rift between koetter and licht, koetter knows football better than licht its painfully obvious and licht is not getting koetter the grade A groceries to make a good meal, he is shopping at dollar tree and expecting koetter to be a berns chef

  19. zzbuc Says:

I am with you Pryd…..100% with you…….I am 100% too with Coach Koetter,. Lost my patience with JW3 and with GM!!!!

  20. Bruce Lee Says:

I don’t think we should fire Dirk because during the controversy he has still produced the number 1 offense in the league. Imagine what he can do with a stable QB situation.

  21. TOM Says:

I just want to thank Licht for all the trades made before the deadline. The RG. you didn’t get. Ty Montgomery the Packs just gave away. The many CB’s you got & Joseph from Oakland. Thanks again for improving the team. Now the Bucs can go all the way. (Where ?) Now we know how much the Bucs are dedicated to winning.

  22. Time will tell yall Says:

I want them to put JW back in so he can further show yall he is no franchise QB this is just a small portion of how bad he can and will be let him keep playing to go ahead and put the nails in his own coffin so yall will have to finally admit he is not the guy yall want him to be! Some fans can’t see the forest for the trees smh

  23. Bonzai's Ghost Says:

Is Jameis Winston purposely trying to get cut?

Tampa turned on Jameis because of the Uber thing…not all of us, but many did. A simple groping was enough to turn fans against him, even though it was years in the past. He saw that. It had to hurt. He as much as said that after the things he had done since, the fans should know him better by now.

He may be thinking that if he can get cut, he can sign a one year deal somewhere, then set himself up for life.

I don’t know if that is the case. But it seems like a possibility.

    But it is unlikely…

Jameis has too many close friends here…Mike Evans, Cam Brate, Chris Godwin, Ali Marpet…and a bunch of others. They are not just weapons to him, they are friends. I would hope he would be hesitant to leave them behind.

That said, the suspension did something to him. And then not facing the Bears? Jameis trained the entire suspension to beat the Bears, only to have wasted his time. The coach praised his regimen while suspended, then slapped him with an extra game? Yet more fuel on the fire.

Contrary to MTM, who doesn’t seem to know much of anything about the team, which means he is a troll from another team, Jason Licht has done a tremendous job in the draft. MTM’s kind always go back to drafting a kicker in the second round. That’s why we know they are trolls. He doesn’t even bother to update his rant to current times.

My final thoughts, then I’m out again…

Benching Winston during that game was a smart move. Not playing him this week is probably wise. But if it goes beyond this week, Koetter is messing up big time…unless Fitz breaks out again.

Can Fitz do it and maintain? Absolutely not.

He might win a game or two, but that’s the extant of it. Tampa Fans have always suffered from ‘Grass is Greener Syndrome’. They always think change is better.

    Trade Winston!
    Fire Koetter!
    Fire Smith!
    Fire Licht!

Tell me, oh high and mighty Tampa Fans…how has that policy worked out the past 10-12 years? Has firing the coaches and GMs done anything at all to improve the situation? Yet, here you are, wanting to do the same thing you’ve done over and over, and expecting a different result.

The truth is this: the Trolls like hitting at low points. They know how easily manipulated by fear and anger Tampa Fans are. And if the fans are not angry enough, well, hey, the Trolls generate more of it. Oh, more than half of what they say are pure lies, but they do not care.

Because the goal of trolls is to harm the team.

You know who they are. You even point them out over the years. And yet, when times get rough, you buy into their words.

Being a fan isn’t easy…not for Tampa. We’ve had our share of down times and not enough up times…but the pattern that keeps repeating itself is this: Not enough patience with players and staff since Gruden left. And the result? Losing. Nonstop.

Never mind that there are reasons for everything, and not always negative ones. We have more rookies starting than ever before due to injury. Rookies who should have had time to be developed. Instead, they have been thrown to the wolves out of necessity. That’s not anyone’s fault…injuries happen. No one can predict them.

No point in blaming Licht or Koetter.

And for heaven’s sake…stop blaming Koetter every time Todd Monken makes a bad play call! You wanted him calling the plays and he is! All. The. Time.

I have no doubt the trolls and haters will try to deny these things. They’ll either insult me (which proves they are trolls) or will do their best to make people not take these words to heart or seriously.

But these are words of truth. Tampa Fans…true Tampa Fans…need to understand the change will not come from a new head coach and new GM, it will come from patience.

  24. Joe Says:

I don’t think we should fire Dirk because during the controversy he has still produced the number 1 offense in the league. Imagine what he can do with a stable QB situation.

    Or wreck the next one.

  25. 813bucboi Says:

dirk and licht are trying to stay the nfl….the only way that happens is if they win some games…they don’t care who’s at QB because they know they’ll be let go by the glazers at the end of the season anyways…..

no trades says it all…..glazers don’t want licht and dirk screwing stuff up for the new HC and GM…..

    Kris Richard for HC!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  26. Lamarcus Says:

    813

    No on Richards

They need to bring the brinks truck to Bruce Arians house and try get him out of retirement

  27. D-Rome Says:

Can Fitz do it and maintain? Absolutely not.

    Neither can Jay-Miss.

Tampa Fans have always suffered from ‘Grass is Greener Syndrome’. They always think change is better.

    Trade Winston!
    Fire Koetter!
    Fire Smith!
    Fire Licht!

The defense has improved with Smith fired. Go figure.

  28. 813bucboi Says:

    lamarcus

    No to bruce arians…..

how’d the last rejects(dirk&smitty) work out for us…..im tired of getting coaches that failed and have been sitting on their couch…..if he’s retired, let him stay retired….get someone that wants to be an HC….

get a new young innovative up and coming coach that has a great resume and is proven in the player development department….something we’ve lacked for a long time…..

bring in someone that has played the game at the highest level, that has been part of a stable organization and winning culture and a coach that players respect…..

let old man bruce stay in his rocking chair…..go get Kris Richard!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  29. pelbuc Says:

Licht caused this mess along with oh so many other brutal draft picks and FAs.
and Glazers signed off on all these blunders and left Koetter to try to win with such a motley crew. Koetter is not a HC and cant or wont coach because of his horrible QB. Leave it to this franchise to create such a clusterf&*k.

  30. GhostofSchiano Says:

Correct me if I am wrong please.

Doesn’t the GM “consult” with the HC, DC & OC BEFORE he signs a player?

To ensure the needs are addressed?

  31. Mike Johnson Says:

I say..Run’em all out of Tampa Bay on a Rail. Make’em all..Walk the Plank!!
Make (Father) Tony Dungy president of Buc Football Operations. Lets get some..Winners in town baby!!!!!!!!!!!!.

  32. Lamarcus Says:

    813

Same could say for the unproven coaches that has to “learn” on the job

    Schiano
    Morris
    Koetter

All had no head coaching experience

  33. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

GhostofSchiano, the GM is supposed to do what you said but the way things are going lately it ABSOLUTELY seems that licht is building nothing, drafting the kicker was a huge tell tale as well as that same year passing on laremy tunsil to protect the franchise and selecting a slow, small corner in a division with huge WRs

  34. 813bucboi Says:

    lamrcus

but none of those coaches were part of a winning nfl culture, developed nfl players, played the game at the highest level and were part of a stable organization……

look at nagy, mcvay and shanahann……all young, innovative, developed players, part of stable organizations and had no HC experience……

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  35. Buc1987 Says:

Bonzai’s Ghost …..1000% right….and so is Rex too.

I would not be surprised if Winston is behind center for the Bucs week 1 of next season.

I love how much some posters are blowing up this past game to proclaim that it proved he’s a bust. That one game did it for them. Ha ha ha to some of them he was a bust before he was drafted…not going to stop the mantra now, but vamp it up even more….with GLEE!

It’s one thing to come on here as some new poster and make these proclamations about Winston this and Winston that. That might intrigue me a little bit. Yet it’s those same dudes from the past three years. Yawn.

Bonzai….us “real fans” have nerves of steel. You can usually point them out in the threads if you try. Not too much Bucs misery or dispair phases us anymore.
I’m actually trying to not follow the team as closely as I used to. Even started to take down my Buc Cave gear the other day. When they become good again they become good. Not going on this ride as much as I used to in the past.

Want to get it to the point where someone asks me who’s the starting RT for the Bucs and I have no idea…YES that checked out.

The ride sucks anyways and it always makes me sick…..

  36. Buc1987 Says:

813…so keep hiring and firing until you get lucky?

    That’s basically your strategy.

Maybe decent coaches don’t want to come to Tampa….like Parcells…

  37. LakeLand Says:

Jason Licht always disappear when this team is in turmoil

  38. Defense Rules Says:

@Dusthty Rhothdes … “licht is not getting koetter the grade A groceries to make a good meal, he is shopping at dollar tree and expecting koetter to be a berns chef.” Dusthty, that was the BEST description I’ve read yet of the mess we find ourselves in. Of course, the other problem is that they hired Koetter from McDonalds hoping he’d become a Parisian chef in time. And how’d that work out for us?

@D-Rome … “The defense has improved with Smith fired. Go figure.” Wow, we sure did. Went from giving up 34.6 PPG in the first 5 games (against several fairly high-powered offenses to include the Saints, Eagles, Steelers & Falcons) to only giving up 30 PPG against 2 relatively weak offenses (Browns & Bengals). Super Bowl here we come.

@Mike Johnson … “Make (Father) Tony Dungy president of Buc Football Operations.” Mike, me thinks that Tony’s a LOT smarter than that. Of course, everyone loves a good challenge, and the Bucs could certainly qualify as that.

@Joe … “Or wreck the next one.” Best line in weeks Joe. Dirk Koetter’s a nice guy (so was Mike Smith), BUT … he’s NOT the head coach we need to right the ship. As an OC, he’s respectable, but I see LOTS of other HCs around the league who I’d rate well above him … as a HC. Too conservative, too cautious, too stubborn. That combination should win him a position though in about the middle of the HC unemployment line.

  39. Buccfan37 Says:

Bonzai… patience is a Bucs fans best virtue. We know how to remain patient as decades of proof prove.

  40. Buc1987 Says:

    stpetebucsfan…betrayed the Bucs…three years ago.

You are not addressing the BBonzai we know. You are addressing a troll. Give it up.

    Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Thank you sir, I had forgot about the tunsil snub, very telling.

  43. firethecannons Says:

Hoping Fitz balls out at Carolina and we hang 40-50 pts on Panthers–keep making it impossible to put Jameis back in

  44. firethecannons Says:

agree Licht has made some bad moves–he rates below average at the highest
    sux:VH3
    sux:JW3
    sux:DM22
    sux:ROJO

just a few that immediately come to mind

  45. BADMAN Says:

WE SHOULD HAVE GOT A Q/B 2018 DRAFT AND TRADED WINSTON , ANYWAY YOU LOOK AT IT HE IS DOUBLE TROUBLE AND IT SHOWS !!! I SAID ALL ALONG WE SHOULD HAVE DRAFTED MARIOTTA…….AND WE WOULDN’T HAD THIS PROBLEM, THE BUC’S NEED TO LET THE PEOPLE OF TAMPA DO THE DRAFT FOR THEM BECAUSE THEY SURE DON’T KNOW WHAT THE HELL THEIR DOING !!!

  46. Bonzai's Ghost Says:

    stpetebucsfan

    – I was addressing trolls, not frustrated real fans.

    – The stuff that happened in college has nothing to do with this. In fact, you even laid it down until the Uber thing came up.

    – And finally, I was groped by girls in high school and by women as an adult at least 30 times. It was never considered assault. Inappropriate? Yes. But nothing major. The MeToo movement is what’s making such a big deal of this, and it has completely been blown out of proportion. A simple groping means he touched a woman and stopped when she protested. Had he kept doing it, then it would have been assault.

My respect for you caused me to address your comments, but this is as far as I’ll go with this conversation. Just know that people disagreeing with me does not make them trolls. It is the actual trolls I was addressing. Such as MTM, who clearly does not even know the current state of the roster.

This is usually the time of the year when the fans reveal how fragile their devotion to the team really is. It is also the time of the year when the glass half empty people start attacking the glass half full people.

    I’m out!

  47. stpetebucsfan Says:

    OrlBucfan

I take your point…even a different name…but he and I and 87 have had this debate about a franchise QB’s responsibility for a long time.

The “tell” that it’s the same guy is the “simple groping”. These guys simply cannot stand to read an opposing opinion about St. Jameis. They have all manner of excuses which mostly revolve around gold digging women. What they don’t wish to address is that leaving the two major incidents aside…stipulating that NONE of it was St.Jameis fault….who made him go out and get passout drunk with two losers with horrid reputations at 3AM his FIRST off season!!!! NOBODY has explained that one yet but I can here it coming.

Yeah SPBF like you never went out partying and got drunk. Of course I have but I was NEVER top pick in the NFL with the worst reputation of ALL the draft picks. An entire NFL franchise did not depend on my behavior in clubs.

  48. Buc1987 Says:

stpetebucsfan…then there’s fans like me….win at all costs…groping be damned….who could careless what he does off the field. Certainly NOT to level that some around the bay area do. I hear smack talk about Winston from other teams fans all the time at work. I defend him back just like I do on here. Not even that subtle either.

We can go back and forth about Jameis forever and prolly will if he remains a Buc. All of us can argue and haggle over the kid until the end of time. It’s been going on in JBF comments for 4 years now. Us against them and me against that guy. Over Jameis.

I remember when it was over Freeman. Oh those days were glorious in here. About the same actually. Bashing eachother left and right. Over Freeman.

It’s not going to end. Not too many are going to waver from one side to the other. It’s starts to read like a redundant soap opera in here. Years later fans can go through the archives of JBF and read about the Jameis days. There they will find the SAME posters…posting the SAME dayum shyte for 3 years straight.

    Oh GLEE!

  49. King Buc17 Says:

I don’t know why everyone is so upset about the situation. The offense under Koetter is the best in the NFL. He is not going anywhere.
The defense needs to get a little better and we are 5-2. If we don’t turn the ball over we can go 6-3 or 7-2 in our last 9 games.
I think we are going to shop him (Winston) for a 1st and 4th to the Giants if they don’t pick first. Or we trade straight up to the Raiders for Carr. Change of scenery might be best for both. Plus I bet Gruden would love that challenge.
