Dome Rotten Dome

October 9th, 2018

Bucs seeking first win in Falcons’ new cage.

If for whatever reason Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith decided to step aside before the Bucs play in Atlanta on Sunday, Smith’s legacy with the Bucs would be a complete inability to find a defense that can play in domes.

One of the biggest headscratchers in the NFL is how the Bucs defense, Smith’s defense, absolutely no-shows in games in domes.

Now well into his third season coordinating the Bucs defense, Smith has a 2-6 record with a roof over his defense. And even those two wins, in retrospect, were largely in spite of the Bucs defense — not so much because of the Bucs defense. In those eight games, the defense has allowed an average of 34 points and has been torched for a galling average of 441 yards a game.

This year’s win in New Orleans masked a pathetic defensive effort on opening day, 475 yards and 40 points, the first time in franchise history the Bucs won a game when the defense got dragged up and down the field for 40 points.

Maybe the Dixie Chicks will have the roof open Sunday?

The high in downtown Atlanta is expected to be 77 under partly sunny skies with a 10 percent chance of precipitation. Sounds like no-roof weather to Joe.

Maybe then, without a roof, the Bucs will play more like they do in an outdoor stadium and not get raked over the coals like they have been while playing indoor football for Smith.

Maybe raheem comes over before the game and calls the defense for the bucs and the youngry secondary

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Right now, Mike Smith defense is actually WORSE than Duheem Morris when the team quit on him

I’ll never forget what Deion Sanders Sanders said during the national televised game that season……he said he loves raheem morris to death but he said he knows “quit” when he sees it and he said the team “quit” on him.

I really think the defense is on the verge of “quit” and when the offense starts seeing that, well that’s the beginning of the end for this season.

Make no mistake gentlemen, Atlanta will come our scrapping with intensity cause they know their season is on the line………..if the bucs don’t match the same intensity…………..the bucs will lose and the season will be over for the bucs.

  3. Wausa Says:

Just saw Dirk Koetter is now second highest odds of NFL Head Coach being fired after not letting Mike Smith go.

“Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter is viewed as the second-most likely coach to get fired, at +500 odds.”

  4. horse liver Says:

The Bears and Mitch Trubisky don’t play in a dome. It’s not the dome, it’s that the combination of coaches, scheme, players, and practice habits equates to the worst defense in NFL history.

I believe that coach Koetter will get canned I think it more has to do with the defense been stink for 3 years due to his loyalty to Mike Smith………………………………………………………..and Koetter knows this already……..

the trick to creating a twitched up bunch of dudes in the locker room is to play porn on all the tv sets…get everyone crazy and horned up – but with no relief…let them go out there like horned up savages…

boxers are not supposed to unload the keesters for 2 months before a fight…this is how you create savages…watch porn, no relief, then go out there and attack the other team with testosterone and sperm counts that are off the meter…

    lol

  7. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

    @TheBucsAnthem totally agree.

This game will be interesting to see what scheme Mike Smith has, and what coverage’s we play, Atlanta has been a notorious match up for our secondary to get embarrassed especially with trying to cover Julio. I have a feeling this game will tell us all we need to know about adjustments and game planning by our defensive Guru (cough cough).

Atlanta will be doing everything it can to get this win, I just hope we can be the more physical team with the fewer penalties.

    you a damn fool…..lol……

  9. Dooshlarue Says:

    Adam,

Nice theory on the high sperm count leading to more aggressive play, yet it makes me wonder if GMC’s off-the-charts high estrogen count might negate it?

  10. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

I also forgot to add ……GO BUCS!!!!!!

  11. adam from ny Says:

come on guys – ya gotta luv it !

  12. 813bucboi Says:

joe- im pretty sure ATL knows about smittys record in domes too….they’ll have that baby closed up tight….lol….

as early as it is, this is a must win game for this staff…..lose this game and not only will they most likely lose the team but they’ll lose their jobs especially if we get blown out like we have on the road…..

this staff can not afford another blow this year….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  13. BringBucsBack Says:

Adam, you win “the most unique post of the day” award! However, that tactic did not work very well on Lawrence Taylor!

As far as playing in domes, perhaps our Bucs only want to play well when God can see them!;)

  14. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Bring bucs back, if your theory was true then the bucs wouldn’t play like doo doo in dallas back in the day or basically their entire history

  15. adam from ny Says:

this game is a very important team barometer after the chicago debacle…if we lose and lose bad, i think this team spirals out of control…

yet a win can do a lot mentally and i think we thus rebound well into having a solid second quarter of the season…

if we beat notlanta, i say we come home and win a back and forth potential shootout type game with the baker browns…

then the mindset should just be to win one of the next 2 games somehow, someway…

giving us a 3-1 second quarter of the season and a 5-3 midseason record…

    this is really possible…

and yes i know i’m getting way ahead with a quick 4 game analysis…as it should be one game at a time…

but i really think the atlanta game – if we win – funnels into a successful home game vs. the baker mayfields…and then split the next two…

i’m just saying a win makes all this possible…

ps ok fine no porn in the locker rooms either…lol

  16. Joe Says:

im pretty sure ATL knows about smittys record in domes too….they’ll have that baby closed up tight….lol….

    LOL That’s a good point.

  17. Cobraboy Says:

If this team gets blown out on D again and loses, the team quits and the season gets really ugly.

its facts like those that folks like defenserules & realist refuse to believe…..and those 6loses have all been blow outs…..and joe didn’t even mention the completion % which is shocking in domes as well…..

those 2 clowns wont even post when you state facts proving how smittys defense has been trash for so long……que the excuses!!!!!

  19. YoungBucs Says:

Smitty’s defense couldn’t stop receivers running in lead boots on the field and your talking about a retractable roof?

  20. Big Stinky Says:

    @ TheBucsAnthem
    @ Evolvingbucsfan

The Bucs should only get rid of Smitty and Licht if we finish under .500 again. The blame is on them NOT Dirk. The Glazers would be stupid to get rid of the coach that set the yardage record for the Bucs in 2015 when he is NOT to blame. I kind of feel like Licht is the only one that should get canned but it would be nice to see if a new DC would make any difference. The players Licht has stacked this team with are just bad IMO, especially on defense. It would be nice to see the Bucs blitz more often than they do, that could make a big difference for sure.

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The Bucs had better learn to win in a dome, because our next stadium will be one.

  22. Joel Says:

What an overrated venue. Watching a football game there is like watching a basketball game in Tropicana Field. Too big. Awful acoustics. No crowd noise.

  23. Buccfan37 Says:

That stadium is ugly, looks like something a psycho child put together with an toy erector set.

  24. James Walker Says:

The only thing that has not changed is ownership.

  25. 813bucboi Says:

    big sticky

if licht is fired, the new GM will want “his” HC……not dirk…..and if we fail is year, it will be dirks fault because he is the HC….and he would deserve to get canned because he refuses to provide any input on the defense or tell his friend smitty to shake things up, his defense aint working…..

how can you say that about licht when player development especially on defense has been lacking since smitty took over…..LVD has regressed….kwon has regressed….spence has regressed…..the list goes on……

then licht gives smitty 4 former 1st rounders along the dline…..smitty has 2 PB LB’s and a secondary littered with 1st and 2nd round picks…..licht has had some swing and misses but the coaches are screwing him over…..

and the offense aint that much better…..the offense is predictable and lacks creativity……and most importantly, we lack a run game……the offense is too finesse…..in 2015 doug was the second leading rusher in the league…..we haven’t had a rb sniff 1k since….that’s 3years with no run game…..the oline isn’t physical because they are asked to pass block far too often…..they haven’t developed as run blockers because dirk doesn’t run the ball…..

this team is weak minded and too finesse and it starts at the top with dirk…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  26. Phil Says:

Was Chicago game in a dome? I think the Bucs defense has shown they can suck anywhere.

  27. ndog Says:

    The answer is simple Joe.

    COMMUNICATION!!!!!!

Isn’t that always the stock excuse?

  28. __TGH__ Says:

Rather than making them watch porn… maybe put together all the media clips from the past 4 weeks talking about how terrible and pathetic the defense is. Then roll in a few clips of people talking about their mothers.

The Bucs defense doesn’t play pissed off and they need to.

  29. Mike Johnson Says:

If Mike Smith runs the same stuff he been running and the same stuff he ran while coaching ATL, they are gonna clobber us. I got us winning this one. Our D will play inspored after a long rest. Just a mirage though. They will return to lackness form thereafter.

    LOL!!!!!!!

  31. GhostofSchiano Says:

Well if the dome theory is accurate we only have one more game scheduled this year in a dome and that would be Dallas, and they are in disarray. So hopefully………….

  32. Joe Says:

That stadium is ugly, looks like something a psycho child put together with an toy erector set.

The original renderings for the place the stadium was white with red trim.

It looked like an overgrown Shoney’s.
