Dirk Koetter Wants You To Call Him, Says He Hates “Fake Text Questions”

October 6th, 2018

“Look, Ali, you know and I know that the haters Instatextbooking their Tweeters into my show are half media and half coward haters using fake names. I want to hear voices!”

The head coach of the Buccaneers is a man of the people, not a man of the media.

Dirk Koetter is an intriguing dude when it comes to his role as team spokesman and window-in-chief to the inner workings of the Bucs.

Koetter is one of the most candid coaches in the NFL, an absolute gem for the media, but at the same time he’s no fan of his media duties and has had his share of confrontations with media members off camera.

Koetter is much more fun, engaged and direct with fans, and he was praised for that by a fan caller to his radio show last week. The fans said he can tell Koetter isn’t his real self with media.

“That’s one of the reasons I wanted to do this show in this format, is to try to get away from [answers in a media setting] because I really don’t want to be that,” Koetter said.

On Fridays, Koetter is on the Buccaneers Radio Network with host Casey Phillips taking rapid-fire questions from fans, via telephone and various platforms including the Bucs’ mobile and social media platforms. He’s no fan of the latter.

“But I really would like to hear from fans on live call-in. I hate these, when Casey makes up these fake text questions that we get through the website. I’d much rather have all live callers and just deal with it,” Koetter said, maybe one-third joking.

Joe agrees with Koetter, and hey, give the man what he wants. It’s his show.  If he’s paranoid about the source of the questions, then fans should help Coach out. On Friday, Joe will pump the phone number out during the show.

Does Joe think some of the voiceless questions coming into Koetter’s show might be from media members, or players, or insincere fans? Absolutely.

OH I CANT WAIT TO TUNE INTO THIS!!!!!!

No beating around the bush or making excuses for your pal Dirk. Every team has injuries, every team has rookies. Explain to us why three years running your defensive staff has been incapable of stopping the leagues worst QB’s from putting up Canton like numbers.

  2. Buc believer Says:

Oh yeah like Casy Phillips is such a hard hitting reporter! Last Bucs uncensored she had Cam Brate on and she asked questions about his roommates and his diet instead of why he thinks Mike Smith and the rest of the Bucs sucked so bad!

  3. Steve in Mad Beach Says:

Remember back when Lovie Smith had a show? He only took ‘fake questions’ that had been filtered and would never actually speak to fans. What a condescending prick he was!

  4. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

Please let us know I wanna call in

  5. Reach87 Says:

Believer, is that the type of team mate you want? One that talks about how his team mates suck? Ever been a part of a real team? If so, you forgot something. Go Bucs!

  6. Birdman Says:

On an unrelated note, how long can Peyton Barber remain unscathed by the Joe’s typewriters while still having less than 3 yards per carry?

  7. Mike Johnson Says:

I’ll call. I want to know what kind of hypnotic effect Smitty has on you Dirk? Whats up with that?’ I want to know WHY..we consistently remain..the worse Defense in the NFL? Don’t worry Dirk, after this losing season Both you and us fans will out of our misery. The Page will be turned.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Birdman, the even bigger question is … “How long can the Oline remain unscathed by the Joes’ typewriters while the RBs they block for keep averaging less than 3 YPC?”

It’d be fun to ask the associated question “How long can Jason Licht go unscathed without taking primary responsibility for the team that HE BUILT? ” … but JBFers don’t go there. No need to while they have Scapegoat Smitty to take the criticism for Licht’s crappy team-building adventure.

  9. Bucamania Says:

Oh boy, Dirk is unraveling. Like anyone is afraid to tell him his defense stinks lol.

  10. Sweeptheleg Says:

    @birdman

Yea all we heard was how bad Doug Martin was and how awful he was and all Barber needed was a chance and blah blah blah. And now he sucks too.

    Earth to people with eyes.

It’s this putrid offensive line. Why oh why is Marpet playing his 3rd position in 3 years? He was a pro bowl level right guard now he’s a left guard after being a center. These idiots should’ve left him where he was.

Marpet is a prime example of why this staff should all be fired immediately. Don’t change something that’s working.

Whole group of morons and why we are the browns of the south. In fact the browns are better. And we still have the 4th best QB in the division

  11. LakeLand Says:

According to Football Outsiders, the Bucs O-Line are ranked 32nd in Run Blocking, 9th in Pass Blocking.

  12. Not there yet Says:

    He May regret that remark

  13. mark2001 Says:

Another Aguayo stinking up the place in the FSU game. What ever made Licht think his brother would be a good pick in the second round?

  14. Buc believer Says:

@Mark2001…. because sucks at evaluating talent.

  15. mark2001 Says:

Wow…total collapse of the FSU D…kind of reminds me of the Bucs D.

  16. mark2001 Says:

Bucs…he has made of believer of that to me. We had Josh Jackson on the board in the second and we pick MJ Slowfoot.

  17. BigMacAttack Says:

He’s an idiot. This is a battle he will not win. The Ali and Donovan show followed by no blocking and now this. They all need to just shut up and play football. Forget about Hollywood and do your job. No moves, no trades, time to fire the whole bunch. Dirk your defense sucks and your offense has fallen apart.

  18. Lucious Selmon Says:

Shee-it. I’d be grinning like a dumb -struck schoolboy sitting next to Casey Phillips, too.

Please let us know I wanna call in

Pryda: “Coach, how much bronze do you think will go into sculpting Jameis’ bust?”

Koetter: “Sh|t. Whose bust did he grope…?”

  22. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

No need to call him. Koetter will make his own bed if he does not have the balls to fire Mike Smith. Coaches fire players all the time for under performing, same should apply to coaches.

  23. unbelievable Says:

Obviously our abysmal running game is STILL Doug Martins fault. That’s what we’ve been told over and over and over and over and…

  24. BigMacAttack Says:

I know the Glazers like to stay close but let their employees do their jobs without interference. The problem is that requires people to actually do their job. Hopefully after the upcoming embarrassment in Atlanta they will step in and pull the plug on this mess.

  25. Birdman Says:

Ronald Jones 2.9 YPC in debut
Peyton Barber 2.9 YPC this season
    2017 Doug Martin 2.9 YPC
    2016 Doug Martin 2.9 YPC

    Target acquired, Oline deflection inbound

  26. BigMacAttack Says:

I still don’t understand why Licht hasn’t traded for Le’veon Bell. Jones is busting, Jacquizz is a joke and Barber is great number 2 back. A real running game will make things so much better and totally open up the passing game. Am I wrong? Joe begged him to get Calais Campbell. He passed. He’s made cheap offers and feeble attempts for others. Maybe the goal isn’t to win. Perennial losers.

  27. Knoxville Buc Fan Says:

Every show he’s had on Buccaneers Total Access this year I’ve called and not one time have they put me through. The questions asked of the coach by Casey have mostly been by Text msg. I’ve listened to the show holding on the line a majority of the time.

  28. Knoxville Buc Fan Says:

I would ask this. How different is it where you grew up in Idaho than it is in tampa? Then oh yeah since you held on to Smitty what’s the chances of you coaching the local high school in your hometown when the whole damn coaching staff gets fired in January?

  29. JayBucBoi Says:

I can remember a time when Koetter was OC where he was asked if he was looking to be a head coach in the league one day soon. It was when the offense was humming and there was chatter around the league about Koetter being a hot head coaching candidate. I remember this because I was one fan who wanted the Bucs to retain Koetter, based on the players saying publicly (obviously) that he was the man, over Lovie.

Short version – Koetter was just as candid then and answered the media head coaching question with how much he’d love “dealing with you guys” on a daily basis. The “you guys” he was reffering to obviously was the media. I was ignorant to this back then, but his history clearly shows that he does not dig the media, and never has.

    Did I miss something, Joe??

Cleared hot, Birdman. Danger close. Repeat DANGER CLOSE.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

You guys are not very smart, are you?

If you think this is an opportunity to troll, forget it. Be an idiot and Casy Phillips will simply screen the call, as we she should. It’s not an excuse to justify disrespect, you dweebs. LoL

And you wonder why so many coaches and players refuse to take callers. It’s because someone always ruins it for everyone else.

Dirk is trying to engage the fans, not be a punching bag for them.

  32. Lucious Selmon Says:

    Hey, Bonsai.
“… someone always ruins it for everyone else.”
    —————

You talking about Tom Jones? 😱

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The Glazers will not pull the plug on anything. Not for a while.

The Bucs are 2-2 by the bye when they were expected to be 0-4 or 1-3. Right this moment, they have exceeded expectations. True, tue defense sucks, but you’re talking about a unit that has 8+ new players taking the field on Sundays, with half of them being rookies who were expected to have at least a season to adjust and learn.

As to previous years, we all know Licht did a poor job of upgrading the defense before this year. I don’t hold it against him…he had to work on the offense first. But this year is the first year Mike Smith was given the tools he needs to succeed. It just isn’t going to be like flicking a switch. Not instantaneous.

So he SHOULD have until the end of season at least.

That said, I would not be upset if they moved on from him. I never wanted him to begin with. However, things will not improve with Dufner or Buckner as DC, so I agree with Dirk. What then?

Dufner might have experience as a DC, but there is a reason he has not been one since. He would use the same exact playbook that Smith is using because it would confuse things to switch now.

So while firing Smith might be justified, it is also justified not to fire him. Yet.

  34. jmarkbuc Says:

    @Bonzai

He just said he’d rather take calls and deal with it.

When you offer to engage the fans, be prepared. Especially with the situation this coaching staff is in.

Dirk wants sympathy. He might get more than he is bargaining for, and it won’t be that.

Is it not disrespectful to the fans to keep Smitty on staff when he is clearly not capable? Same could be said for Dork himself.

  35. jmarkbuc Says:

“However, things will not improve with Dufner or Buckner as DC, so I agree with Dirk. What then?”

What’s the worst that could happen? Being the 34th ranked Defense?

Not saying either of those two are great choices, but this Defense is “Horrifically” awful. Sometimes change is good.

  36. Joseph Mamma Says:

What’s the worst that could happen? Being the 34th ranked Defense?

Well actually we are not the worst team in total yards given up (31st) or rush yards allowed (6th). So if we can just get worse in those two areas, this Defense can really separate from the pack and become a truly historic steaming pile of dung.

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @jmarkbuc

Okay, sure. Put it to the test and see what happens. Don’t claim you were not warned.

  38. BucNole Says:

While I agree you cant really fire Smith right now, you CAN reassign his duties – play calling to Duffner. . we did that on offense and have seen some positive results – maybe it would work for the defense as well.
He might call the exact plays but maybe be a little more aggressive. Maybe blitz a LB sometimes????. . . Damn how about a double A gap blitz.
We didnt blitz “Biscuit” one time in the first half even tho he was the worst rated QB against pressure going into that game. We pulled a good blitz in the second half that resulted in pressure (sack i think) and never went back to it???
thats some next level stupid IMO

  39. Reach87 Says:

But Bonzai, don’t we have a right to call in and disrespect the coach? Say whatever we want in any way we desire? We do it on JBF against our 2-2 team. It’s our right, and that makes it right. Right? Go Bucs!
