“We Set Out To Have A Tougher Training Camp”

September 6th, 2018

Surprised by rookie total

We’re three days from kickoff, the real stuff, and that means Dirk Koetter is sitting down with a private chat.

Unfortunately, that 1-on-1 discussion was not with Joe but with Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com.

Joe’s got the video below. It opens with Koetter explaining that “we set out to have a tougher training camp” to be ready for the Bucs’ challenging opening slate of games. Joe wonders whether an early Week 5 bye had a little to do with that. In the past, Koetter has passed on talking about things related to toughness measurement when it comes to his camp.

Also noteworthy in the video, Koetter was surprised when Smith advised him he has nine rookies on his roster. Fun fact: The 2010 Bucs actually had 10 rookies make starts that season — and the Bucs won 10 games.

Enjoy!

  2. LakeLand Says:

    9 rookies on the roster

How much impact will they have?

  3. Eric Says:

PFT has us ranked 31st, notch above the Browns.

    A bit optimistic.

  4. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Eric hahahah, browns have a legit defense this year

  5. ChanEpic Says:

LOL @ “Youngry”.. I’m going with “Yangry” for 2018.

  6. TBB2017 Says:

gotta ask- who were those 10 rookies in 2010?

  7. jmarkbuc Says:

    How is he surprised?

  8. LakeLand Says:

    TBB2017

    Arrelious Benn
    Mike Williams
    Ted Larsen
    Gerald McCoy
    Cody Grimm
    LeGarrette Blount
    Dakota Watson
    Erik Lorig
    Myron Lewis
    Derek Hardman

    Punter Robert Malone

And you can add Preston Parker as slot WR

  9. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    4-12

Clearly the camp was not tougher we did not hear about tinker bell 93 pissing and moaning crew

  10. LakeLand Says:

    * Preston Parker played in 9 games in 2010, he didn’t start until 2011. But the other 10 rookies had starts in 2010.

  11. unbelievable Says:

I think only 4 of those guys are even still in the league. Maybe 5?

Larsen, McCoy, Blount, Watson, maybe Lorig?

  12. unbelievable Says:

SB’s pickem league is starting again. Last 2 years we had like 40 ppl

  13. LakeLand Says:

I believe the 2010 coaching staff were superior to the current staff.

  14. unbelievable Says:

Nah, 2010 was a weird flukey season.

We had just about every ball bounce our away. Crazy circus catches from Williams and Winslow. Freeman actually used to run.

As exciting as it was at the time, and bummed that we missed out on the playoffs because of a tiebreaker, we weren’t going to go anywhere in the playoffs. I knew it, fans knew it. The defense was beyond decimated with injuries (and not that good to begin with when healthy).

  15. The Buc Realist Says:

2010???? When the Bucs finished 3rd in the division??? The same 2010 when the Carolina Panthers totally tanked for the #1 overall draft pick for Cam Newton?????? the 2010 that the Bucs never beat a team over .500 ( except the last game when NO were benching starters for the playoffs)!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. LakeLand Says:

    Raheem Morris
    Greg Olson
    Alex Van Pelt
    Steve Logan
    Eric Yarber
    Alfredo Roberto
    Richard Bisaccia
    Todd Walsh
    Joe Baker
    Jimmy Lake

Those guys are good position coaches and coordinators

  17. LakeLand Says:

    *Alfredo Roberts

  18. Tampa Stadium Says:

I hope they come out running the ball right up the middle!!! setup the pass for the 2nd quarter. special teams need to be special! bring back old school football. Run, defense in the 1st half and light them up with deep balls in the 2nd half. JPP needs to bring the the heat. Oline needs to control the game and keep them obnoxious saint fans and their stupid out fits with their studded jeans sitting on their asses. Make that city sad after week one. then we need to adventure down to all the bars and raise our flags. cause all those fans will be back in Metairie and across the bridge. BUC DAT!!!!

  19. LakeLand Says:

I give the 2010 Bucs coaching staff a whole lot of credit. The Bucs actually played 22 rookies in 2010. And the coaching staff had them prepared to play week in and week out. They had 2 blowout losses to the Steelers and Saints. But they lost their other 4 games by a total of 20 points.

  20. Godeep66 Says:

Every training camp should be tough.

  21. Kobe Faker Says:

“Better hope Philly doesnt lose tonight because they will not go 0-2 to start their season ”

  22. Rod Munch Says:

Hey guys if you want some weather gossip that most likely won’t be a factor, but you want to be ahead of the news hysteria, here’s some stuff.

By the second half of next week there is supposed to be a very large hurricane that will be targeting the east coast – currently the Eurotrash model has it nearly hitting DC, but close enough to cause a lot of panic. It has it turning away after making landfall around Virginia Beach, VA, but instead of racing out to sea, it has it stopping, then turning south, and that’s where the models end. Meanwhile the American model has it as huge giant hurricane that would be making a beeline for NYC, again, not getting there and turning away, but also then stopping and turning south, where the model ends. Now, models this far out are very inaccurate, but the Eurotrash model has wanted to take a hurricane into DC, or very close, for a couple of days now. This would mostly be happening between about Thursday to Sunday of next weekend, assuming the storm does stick around, and if the models continue to show this for another day or so, by Saturday you should start to hear the panic begin.

BUT, here’s where we come into play, there’s a much smaller hurricane that would be coming through the Caribbean and it would be pushed south by the big hurricane blocking it from moving north. IF, and we’re like 10 days out at this point so it most likely will change, but if the big hurricane is there, is blocking this small storm and keeping it really far south, as the big hurricane moves out to sea that would create the opening for the storm in the south Caribbean to make a sudden turn north – and doing some eyeball estimates on the map, and going beyond the current model data, to me, this looks like a storm that could, if it even exists, be an issue for us, perhaps as soon as a week from Sunday (but probably more like a week from Mon, if it even exists).

So I share this info since if both of these hurricanes exist, week 2 of the NFL season is going to be a s-show since you could have massive panic in the northeast and perhaps a smaller chance of something threatening us in that same general time frame. Then again nothing might happen except for some seagull gets the fish blown out of his mouth 700 miles east of Bermuda. But it’s never too early to start a panic, and to profit from that panic, so go buy stock in companies that would benefit from a massive northeast hurricane. Who would that be? I’m not even sure, Lowes, Home Depot? Feel free to give me bad stock advice to go along with my bad weather forecast.

Sorry, that was longer than I thought.

  28. BucNole Says:

A tough training camp should be a given for an NFL team
Why does that seem to escape this coaching staff and organization in the first place????
    wow. . . just wow

  29. DanBucsFan Says:

Youngry!!!! I’m with you Mike. Bring on the Saints, New year…. Who cares what anyone says, this team can be whomever they decide to be. I believe in the Bucs. R.I.P. Burt Reynolds

  30. SOEbuc Says:

#31 PFT? S my D. I believe Barber is gonna have a break out year. Jameis could finally be making the turn into All-Star franchise QB that we expected him to be when we picked him #1. Too many guys with great hands and what looks to be a much upgraded defense that will get more than 22 sacks this year.

I think we’re at least gonna get past 5-11. Would be nice to get outta the gate fast. This is the most confidence I’ve had in Koetter and I think this is a good team with talented guys they’ve put together.

    We shall see. GO BUCS!!!

  31. SOEbuc Says:

Think Whitehead and Stewart can make immediate impacts as rookies. I love Stewart. That is no joke being able to punch those balls outta players hands. Those weren’t just lucky knock outs by him. That’s a very good talent he has. He could get some serious FF.

  32. Buc believer Says:

Joe the season is starting so it’s time to keep your promise and free Tmax…
