Bucs Punt Freddie Martino

September 27th, 2018

It’s been all somber shots of Slivovitz and Jägermeister tonight at the velvet-lined lounge of the Vero Beach Ramada Inn.

Their favorite son, the pride of North Greenville University, has been cut from the Buccaneers.

Of course, Joe is talking about receiver Freddie Martino, a Bucs special teams ace who apparently wasn’t considered much of an ace any longer.

Martino, 27, was with Dirk Koetter in Atlanta and has been on and off the Bucs’ roster since 2016. He hadn’t caught a pass this season and it seems that perhaps the Bucs want to activate rookie receiver Justin Watson and Martino is the odd man out.

You can bet Martino will be back at some point this season. It’s just how things go. In the meantime, Martino will always have a gig with his friends near Dodgertown.

It’s an all new TAMPA TWO presented by Caldeco Air Conditioning and Heating!!

Great stuff from Mr. Derrick Brooks and the Sage of Tampa Bay sports. Enjoy!

Huge upgrade! That kid Watson looks like another great draft by Licht. This move obviously tells me that Dirk and Co are serious of more firepower on the offensive side of the ball. We’re already #1 in offense in the league and yet we want more!!!

  2. Ryan McGregor Says:

    He’ll be back. Always is.

  3. BuccaneEric75 Says:

941, I don’t see it that way. Even if Watson is active on game day, he won’t get many offensive reps. This move is about potential, and the chance of getting Martino back. If we kept Martino and let Watson go, Watson would be scooped up in a heartbeat. Watson will get whatever snaps Martino would get, but this move is about which guy we could get back if we need him. Watson has shown enough at this point that he could be a starter in the future. We would have lost him if we let him go, Martino will be out there.

  4. LakeLand Says:

They had to cut someone to activate Jameis Winston.

  5. LakeLand Says:

With your 1st and 2nd pick not playing on Sunday. It would be foolish to cut your 5th round pick.

  6. BigMacAttack Says:

I’m surprised he made it this long. Whatever

  7. Fartman Says:

It’s unfair to say Vea is a bust… yet. McCoy’s first year was a wash. McCoy may not be Sapp, but he’s not a bust. Rojo is looking busty… but I wouldn’t make that claim in year 1. Right now Watson is a better football player than Jones.

  8. SteveK Says:

    Fartman,

McCoy tore each bicep his first two seasons. Since then he’s been pretty healthy. Man, I wish he had that sack at the end of the game Monday. I hope he gets trubisky down a couple times on Sunday.

    WHAT

    ABOUT

    VEA

  10. I Bleed Pewter Says:

or they want to activate RoJo

  11. Jean Lafitte Says:

    what happened with Griffin?

  12. Lamarcus Says:

I was wondering why the hell Martino drops key passes in the preseason but made the team? Over Bobo for that matter. But again I’m not in their locker room just a fan view

  13. Trench War Says:

maybe they want to activate RoJo unless they’re keeping 3 QB’s

  14. LakeLand Says:

Ronald Jones should be playing on Sunday. He’s a 2nd round pick, he should be on the field. He should be getting a few touches on Sunday.

  15. R.O. Says:

They put Conte on IR and cut Martino… who else are they adding to the roster?

  16. R.O. Says:

Never mind they signed that other Safety…

  17. LakeLand Says:

I think Safety Andrew Hawkins is taking Conte spot

  18. LakeLand Says:

    I meant Andrew Adams

  19. Fartman Says:

Ronald Jones should only play if he can help us win, not because he’s a 2nd round pick. I don’t care when he was drafted. Every thing I’ve seen from him in a Bucs uniform he’s been hot garbage.

  20. Not there yet Says:

One of the worse run games in the league so you really have no excuse for not playing Rojo. It’s jusy another one of those things I hate about dirk, he just has no idea how to have a successful run game with anyone. Only team in the nfl who’s runners get no playing time over pass pro. All these other young backs get playing time immediately because the run game is actually important. Dirk is the problem and our coaches are dinosaurs

  21. LakeLand Says:

If he’s that much of garbage, they should release him. Why keep him around to take up a valuable roster spot?

  22. Buc believer Says:

Ron Jones will be going the way of Roberto Aguayo. Cut next year and another wasted draft pick by Licht.

  23. horse liver Says:

Watson has much more upside and current side. Someone else from the practice squad ready?

  24. Fartman Says:

I think Rojo is still on the roster because of the investment of a second round pick. You don’t give up on a high pick that soon. Hopefully, he gets it together… but you are under no obligation to play him until he does… and if he still sucks next year… see ya.

  25. FreeTheSecretWeapon Says:

Jones may just be the secret weapon… Wait for it… He was not NFL ready although he was the most explosive RB in the draft…

Just like Vea was the best DT in the draft… Missing 2.games is nothing when your winming… Just ask the JW haters

  26. FreeTheSecretWeapon Says:

    3 vames sorry

That guy is on our team… He clearly has the Vision, Speed and ability to be a game breaker…

Jusr needs to learn the pro style offense… ZERO WORRIES with him…..AT THIS POINT….

We didnt need him to be ready…. We need Barber to step up so everyone forgets about his current struggles…

  28. Chris Cotten Says:

Where is the Ira Kaufman podcast??

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Per Bucs Website:
“The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released wide receiver Freddie Martino on Thursday, a move that will allow for the activation of quarterback Jameis Winston to the active roster on Friday.

Winston returned to the Buccaneers on Tuesday following a three game NFL suspension but the team was allowed a three-day exemption before he counted against the 53-man roster. The Bucs had to create a spot for him on that roster before the start of practice on Friday.”

So it wasn’t about promoting Watson, it was about making room for Winston.

They’d probably intended it to be someone else at the start of the season, but injuries forced a change in plans. My guess is the Ryan Smith was going to originally be the guy, but the kid made the most of his final opportunity and VHIII’s injury saved him.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Anyone giving up on Vea or Rojo are not justified. Neither has even taken the field yet.

    Vea is close.

Rojo isn’t inactive because of him not knowing the offense. He’s inactive because of his subpar pass blocking abilities. Does anyone really think JRodgers is a better runner than Rojo?

Koetter wants pass blocking RBs. Otherwise, whenever they put Rojo in, it would too obviously be a running play. Also, there is the matter of ball security with Rojo. But I’m sure that issue is being addressed.

  31. adam from ny Says:

looks to me like rojo would make a no joke kickoff returner…he seems to need a little space, then bam, he’s gone…maybe koetter and gang are trying to figure out and gather a special set of plays for him – that’s what i would do…he needs creases and space and he goes to the house…he should be much better than charles sims at being charles sims…because he’s similar to charles sims…a whole lot of wide receiver in both these backs…get rojo in there already – but he’s not a pound it up the gut runner – obviously dirk is gonna try to run him up the gut like alstott though…omg

  32. adam from ny Says:

cutting martino means jameis is not starting…martino was kind of a jameis favorite , even with the little playing time he was getting on offense…every qb has faves…martino was not a fitz fave…but djax certainly is…

  33. Scurvy Dogs Says:

Koetter had no use for Freeman in Atlanta and the moment the regime was let go Freeman blew up. I have a feeling the same will happen with RoJo. Dirk needs to wake the F up and let ballers ball.

  34. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think some are confusing the 53 man roster from the 46 game day active list……Watson, Griffin are on the roster……

  35. Mike Johnson Says:

I’s take my losses with our Rookie running back Jones instead of cutting Martino.
Jones is looking like a bust.

  37. Gene Deckerhoff is my hero Says:

Martino is the odd man out of a very talented Bucs WR core. Good luck to him in his future endeavors.

  38. Sharthappens Says:

A must read on “The Big Lead” about how the Bucs should trade Winston.
