Setting Up For A Trade?

August 26th, 2018

Tradebait?

Yes, the Bucs have looked sharp this preseason with the first- and second-team offenses on the field.

The vast majority of starters have played their final preseason game with one remaining Thursday that essentially will be a giant job fair for the AAF.

Despite the Bucs looking much better this preseason, it still is preseason. Only the naive believe it is a true harbinger of the regular season. As a result, much of the national sports media still believe the Bucs are a cellar-dweller.

Jason Lisk of TheBigLead.com in fact wrote a piece ranking the worst teams in the NFL and the Bucs are in that group.

But in that story on how bad the Bucs are, Lisk threw out an interesting possibility. Could it be that Ryan Fitzpatrick (and indirectly, the Bucs), will be showcasing his skills while America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, serves this three-game sentence handed down by NFL strongman Roger Goodell?

To be more direct, Lisk thinks the Bucs will dangle Fitz as tradebait to a contender that either has a quarterback go down or a struggling incumbent.

The Jameis Winston situation looms over this franchise. Ryan Fitzpatrick at age 36 will be the starter to open, and he fits the profile of the kind of veteran who could earn a top pick on his way out of the league. Maybe Winston comes back and everything is perfect after September, there are no chemistry issues, and Dirk Koetter can turn the corner. Maybe.

The angle is intriguing. Koetter often boasts about third-string quarterback Ryan Griffin’s skillset and the only thing holding him back is never taking a snap in a real game.

If Fitz has three decent games and some team that has hopes of the playoffs is desperate enough to cough up a second-day draft pick for him, should the Bucs listen?

Fitz re-signed in the spring on a one-year, $3.3 million deal.

When you consider Fitz’s play last year and how much Mike Glennon got in
when he left. 3.3 million is a bargain IMO.

  2. Godeep66 Says:

I would hope that the Bucs trade JW and Not Fitzpatrick.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Maybe…..only because Fitz’ usefulness will be exhausted and Griffin will be our backup going forward…..I don’t see any way we sign Fitz for 2019.

  4. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Lisk thinks the Bucs will dangle Fitz as tradebait to a contender that either has a quarterback go down or a struggling incumbent.” Intriguing? Uhhh, not so much. Maybe ‘dumber than dirt’ might apply though. IMO, Fitz is the only thing right now standing between us and a losing season. And with yet another losing season would come major coaching changes & a lot of turbulence.

Even after the first 3 games this season, he’sll be invaluable to this team. Scoff if you will Joe (and ya, I’m sure that you are), but we’re on the verge of being a contender. And the one thing that all contenders seem to have is quality, experienced depth. Injuries happen, and it’s ‘Next man up’. Even QBs get hurt (as we saw last year?) and contenders (like the Eagles?) have a seasoned backup ready to step in. Ryan Griffin has looked good in preseason, but that’s the key … it’s PRESEASON, and we’re not pushing for a playoff spot (yet). Plus he’s been playing against the 3’s & 4’s. I prefer Fitz’s experience at this point.

And beyond that, Fitz is a great mentor to Jameis, and Jameis NEEDS that. Fitz & Jameis are both gunslingers IMO, but Fitz looks like he’s learned to temper that a bit & take what the defense gives him as he’s gotten older. Jameis is getting better in that regard, and I suspect it’s because of what he’s picked up watching Fitz to some degree.

  5. Buc4L Says:

    @Godeep66

Trade Jameis? Really? Jameis is a baller, he would be scooped up in a heart beat. Like it or not but, he’s not going anywhere.

  6. El_Buc941 Says:

@ Defense Rules, and that’s why Fitzpatrick has made the playoffs and won a game or 2 in post season or better yet won a Superbowl, because he TAKES WHAT THE DEFENSE gives him. If you know anything about this game most of the QBs that HAVE WON a Superbowl didn’t win because of what the Defense gave them. They went out there and dominated the defense and tore them to shreds and that’s exactly the same mentality that Jameis has and I love it! One thing I’ve learned in life is people will do what YOU allow them to do to you,in other words if you have to do a check down or always play it safe it’s because your allowing the defense to force you to and here in Tampa my friends is over. THERE WAS SUCKING YESTERDAY BUT THAT WAS CONSENTUAL!

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I certainly feel more comfortable with Ryan Griffin seeing his play this preseason.

  8. Buc50 Says:

Some people need to sleep a little longer after going out drinking the night before. Waking up drunk makes you type stupid stuff like “Trade Jameis”

  9. Wausa Says:

If the Bucs traded Jamies Winston it would be the worst decision this franchise has made since the Bucs traded Steve Young.

Luckily, I don’t think Jason Licht is an idiot and Jamies will be playing in Tampa for a long time.

  10. Wausa Says:

Dirk Koetter: “I think performance-wise, you’d have to give Jameis an A for the preseason. I don’t think anybody in their right mind would say that wasn’t an A performance on his part.

  11. AlteredEgo Says:

In a perfect world that would happen…I hope it does…

  12. Skipper Says:

Only a fool would suggest trading Winston.

  13. westernbuc Says:

This team is in no position to trade quarterbacks

  14. Dooshlarue Says:

I’ve been labeled a JW hater but there is no way in hell we trade him!
    Jeez dude, are you stunted?
I’m still skeptical that Jameis has/will progress from a mental standpoint, but on the field he’s looked very good this preseason. The Bucs Brass holds all the cards with the ability to franchise tag him a couple of times to make certain their investment doesn’t go sour.

    Root for the TEAM.
    Go Bucs!

  16. sunshine Says:

i keep hoping trade will be with Winston.. bucs don’t need the face of the team thought about nationally as a bum . As a season tkt holder, trade him and move on

  17. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Yeah…trade away a pick so that you can earn a top pick my losing. Get real, lol.

Fitz is on a one year deal, this idiot doesn’t even know that!

  18. Buchead5588 Says:

Go deep must be riding the short bus

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Godeep66 Says
“I would hope that the Bucs trade JW and Not Fitzpatrick.”

If you are actually a real Bucs fan, there is no way you will want that. And I define a Bucs fan as someone who supports the team, not an individual player. Winston is the Team’s best chance to win over the next ten years. Wishing him gone is wishing ill for the other players, because a losing season means replacing Koetter, and a new coach will want to implement his own vision, so say goodbye to half our great players.

So, are you a Bucs fan or a troll. Fess up!

  20. Buc believer Says:

Hell yeah the Bucs should listen. Of course Licht would probably draft another kicker with that second round pick or maybe worse a long snapper

  21. Buc1987 Says:

    Jiminy Christmas Bonzai!

    Fess up to what?

She’s been a troll for a long time now!
    If she ain’t a chick……I know nothing!!

Least that’s what I’ve been trying to tell everyone.

Buchead5588….the truth…and there’s only a few of them here in the comments section of JBF still riding on it. Good grief!

  22. OneBuc55 Says:

In the case of Fitzpatrick, IF we can get something for him via trade I say do it…

I think Griffin has looked better than Fitz this preseason…Granted it’s been with and against the 3rd team; that being said, Griff has made some great throws in general, and imo done enough overall to earn a promotion from clipboard duty to backup QB…

In the case of those suggesting trading Winston; thank God you guys aren’t GMs…

At this point the hate is so real that he could lead us to the playoffs, win a Super Bowl and you guys would still come on this site saying something dumb like “let’s trade Winston for a 2nd round pick”…yall are just Clueless or flat out Stupid, not even worth a response…

  23. Kobe Faker Says:

Tough decision coming up this offseason!

    * If we go only 5 or 6 wins, Koetter will be out and we will have a new HC and how he views JW3

    * IMO JW3 will play very well but its all about the W’s.

*JW3 trade value will be very high. 2 #1s or at least 1-#1st round and a #2 round

    * JW3 salary will be 20 mil and the Bucs will be in salary cap hell next year

    ***Tough decision for the BUCs!!

With only 5 wins, Bucs will get top 2 QB and get 2 #1s for JW3 and not pay his 20 mil and only pay rookie contract to the new rookie QB.

    “Ill give 2#1s for JW”

    Sean Peyton

  24. Buc1987 Says:

    Kobe….wake and bake much?

  25. Cgmaster Says:

Dont be mad sunshine cause Mariota looked like garbage yesterday. Jameis isnt going anywhere, maybe you should pick a new team. Youand go deep can say stupid crap together.

  26. passthebuc Says:

Ryan G is much better than the fans believe

  27. orlbucfan Says:

Ryan Griffin deserves to be the #2 QB this season. He’s young, and he shows poise in these pre season games. Either behind Fitz or Fameis, no matter. Griffin has earned the #2 spot. This Buc fan is looking forward to listening to his play Thursday night. Jags will be fine tuning their defense so it will be fun. Go Bucs!! 🙂

  29. Stonedbuc Says:

“Type of venteren to earn a top pick” as in top pick in the draft … no one would trade a practice squad player for Fitz.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Kobe may be a troll, but he’s the longest lasting troll!

  31. Tony LA Says:

I really wish this could happen.
It just won’t. Other GMs know how invaluable Fitz is and the fact he has never been to the playoffs or won a big game.

There are already 2-3 better and available QBs on the market, more than the market needs in my humble opinion

  32. Kobe Faker Says:

“Hey BB, whatca do to poster lakeland?”

    Kobe Faker

  33. Walter Seidel Says:

The only reason Winston won’t be traded is because NO team in the NFL will give the Bucs anything substantial for him. Seriously, what team would actually pay for the controversy he’d bring?

  34. MadDog Says:

Lol TAMPA FANS SUCK!! Get out your feelings JW will be here. I’m tired of hearing “I’m a season ticket holder blah blah blah “. This just in I’m not but, I attend every game. Go find a new team

  35. stpetebucsfan Says:

I’ve never been in the group that questions Jameis’ talent. His decision making yeah…but even that seems improved.

I’m the optimist so I’m thinking the knot that the three day suspension jerked in his tail might have been the best thing that could have ever happened to JW and the Bucs. It seems to have forced him to take a hard look at his life and reevaluate.

Whatever the reason JW just seems far more poised and mature this year. I am truly excited about what lays ahead for us if he has TRULY learned his lesson about off field behavior. On the field it’s all been good!!!

As for Fitz…if a team thinks they can win right NOW…he might have appeal but if I’m looking at the Bucs I’m more interested in Ryan Griffin.

Again can somebody educate me? Last year hanging on to Grif was sadly not an issue because of his injury and the I.R.

So what happens this year. We simply have to plan on carrying three QB’s as part of our 53 man roster? I do not believe we can stash him on the Practice Squad because unless I’m mistaken he’d have to clear waivers for that and that’s probably not going to happen.

So am I right…we simply have to plan on spending a very valuable roster spot to keep him? With so much talent in some areas like WR..and very difficult choices among several players on who to cut…that 53rd roster spot is very VALUABLE. I’m for keeping Grif whatever the cost to our roster because he has shown so much potential.

I “think” JW has finally learned his lesson about the off field hijinks…but the past is frequently prologue to the future and so I’m still a little uneasy…but I’m still on the bandwagon as long as JW keeps his nose squeaky clean.

  36. TOM Says:

Enough with this JW crap. Give it a rest. I didn’t understand why JW being suspended for three games, was the second QB in the game after Fitz instead of Griffin.

  37. Cobraboy Says:

There is no such thing as too many good QB’s on a roster.

  38. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Sometimes I think people just post idiotic remarks just to get people to react. Either that or they are just that stupid. Anywho Jameis has looked sharp and glad to have him as our future QB. Go Bucs! I also don’t see us trading Fitz because nobody will offer enough for the deal to happen. I could see Bridgewater going before Fitz.

  39. Trench War Says:

Chucky needs a viable QB backup to Carr, and Khalil Mack could possibly be had in a trade. Fitz to Oakland would be ideal if Ryan Griffin is ready to make his first NFL start.

  40. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Trench

On the surface that sounds improbable, but then Chucky does love him some over the hill QB’s!!

Would love to have K Mack here…dude’s a baller!!!

  41. Radsy Says:

Fitz is the best option for the Saints game. If he prevents us from competing in that game, there would be little risk in giving Griffin the Eagles and Steelers games

  42. mark2001 Says:

No way. What if Jameis flames out again? We trade Fitz? So we are down to our third stringer as starter next year? And what if we trade Fitz and Jameis gets hurt this year? Down to one QB…in a big year for Koetter? Don’t see it.

  43. ImJustHereForJameisNews Says:

Lot of closeted racists in the comments today. Sorry Trump riders, Jaboo not going anywhere!

  44. theodore Says:

The only person dumb enough to trade for Fitzpatrick is Jon Gruden. So there’s hope.

  45. Trench War Says:

    ImJustHereForJameisNews

you’re the only one in here who sounds like a racist.

  46. Mike Johnson Says:

I’ve been very inpressed with Ryan Griffin, He seems like he’s actually learned somethin sittin these past 4 or 5 yrs. He actually looks like..If he had the reps, he’s be competing with Jameis for the starting job. The Kid’s a keeper.

  47. Godeep66 Says:

The only trade should be JW

  48. Ftmyersbuc Says:

The only trade should be godeep66, as a 1st round troll your probably worth a box of maxi pads

  49. gp Says:

godeep is as dumb as a bag of hammers

(still don’t know where that phrase comes from!)

  50. Buc1987 Says:

Godeep66 …really starting to wonder if you’re just some JBF concoction troll…

They hit you and you never hit back..you’re worse than a troll. You’re a worm….spineless worm.

You told me a week ago that I’m fighting a losing battle against you….YOU are a JOKE. This is NOT a battle. A battle against what?

I’m a flamethrower and you’re a SISSY liberal piece of tissue paper!

Try harder Joe’s…bring us something better than this concoction of a clown go deep66. Blech! And using my cousin’s Bucs number 66 at that!
