“It Won’t Be About Talent”

August 22nd, 2018

Must-see video from offensive coordinator Todd Monken

Once in a while Joe barks that you absolutely must watch a video if you are a Buccaneers fan.

This is one of those times.

Just do it below.

Joe will save chiming in on this — and more — from offensive coordinator Todd Monken’s chat with media today.

Joe finds it fascinating that over and over again, Bucs coaches repeat that this team is bursting with talent and it will be up to players to decide they want to be great. (On that front, you can see what defensive line coach Brentson Buckner said about Bucs talent today here.)

    Monken carpet-bombs with truth.

It all comes down to one thing for this team…or for anything worthwhile in life: “How badly do you want it.”

I like this guy. I will not be surprised if he calls plays in the regular season.

  2. SJ-Bucsfan Says:

    Well SAID!!!!

  3. buddy Says:

This guy is a blowhard and likes to hear himself speak. So better coach em up and do your job!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!

  4. 813bucboi Says:

this illuminates the lack of leadership at OBP…..will the coaches maximize the talent they have? or will they keep blaming everything and everyone except themselves?…….

the team can have all the talent in the world but if coaches have a predictable system and rarely adjust, that talent will go to waste by the hands of better coaching that may not have better talent on their teams…..

luckily, we don’t have to wait too much longer to find out if its coaching and scheme or talent and players….

    but yeah….keep rolling out excuses…..lol….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  5. 813bucboi Says:

last year monken said, “we choose to suck”…..ok so if he saw the players and or his coaches choosing to suck, why didn’t he do anything about it?…..

why didn’t he step up and take action instead of sitting on his hands…..

because he aint no leader himself….he talks BIG but carries a twig….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  6. Bobby M. Says:

Show me a team that had success with a QB that turns the ball over 26 times in 12 games…..We can talk about talent, coaching, drafting, heart, effort, injuries etc…..You cant win in the NFL with a QB turning the ball over at that rate.

  7. BucEmUp Says:

813bucboi….he can only change things on offense. Defense has been the problem for well……FOREVER!!!!!! EASIEST SECONDARY IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE TO CATCH A PASS ON.

  8. El Buco Realisto Says:

This is what coaches do!!!!!! This is what they are trying to instill as a “winning” mentality!!!!!!!

““Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He is not saying that they have the greatest roster of talent in the division, But they have enough to compete!!!!!! That they have talent and if they strive and work hard that they can achieve victory!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Lamarcus Says:

This Monken sounds like a college coach talking about college players.

  10. 813bucboi Says:

    bucem

well he should’ve stepped up and changed the red zone offense….or the running game….that’s been just as bad as the defense…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  11. BuccaneEric75 Says:

And we thought Koetter told it like it was! Damn, that was awesome to hear from a coach. Now THATS holding players accountable, not just about how the play, but WHY they play. Loved it!

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Worst defense in the league LAST season….

Nothing matters if you can’t stop the other team from scoring….like ever.

2018 is a whole new season!

  13. Jeffbuc Says:

Bobby I’m a little slow so I don’t get your math of 26 turnovers. 11 interceptions plus 7 fumbles equals 18 where I went to school. That’s only two more than your golden boy Marcus Mariota. So I guess you are admitting that the titans won despite Marcus since your above statement says a team can’t win with a qb turning the ball over that much. But jameis accounted for two more touchdowns than Marcus.

  14. Trench War Says:

That’s why when you have a weak defense you should play smart offense. Taking huge risk when a game is close with lot’s of time on the clock is …well stupid. Bad football.

  15. stpetebucsfan Says:

How badly did the Bucs suck before Dungy turned it around. If there was a JBF back then it would be fun to review opinions of Dungy and staff after that first losing season.

Wonder how many Buc fans were ripping Dungy? Wonder how many pointed out to those who were encouraged that the Buc’s have sucked forever therefore the only appropriate response is negativity.

Again…how many of you were raised on the old nursery rhyme about the little train chugging up the hill…A significant number of JBF posters would have that little train chugging…”I think I CAN’T…I think I CAN’T.”

In the 60’s Frank Sinatra had a great hit song…so positive that JFK used it as his song in his Presidential run.

    “High Hopes”

Just what makes that little old ant
Think he’ll move that rubber tree plant
    Anyone knows an ant, can’t
    Move a rubber tree plant
But he’s got high hopes, he’s got high hopes
He’s got high apple pie, in the sky hopes
So any time your gettin’ low
    ‘stead of lettin’ go
    Just remember that ant
Oops there goes another rubber tree plant

Guys…it’s ALL we have…high hopes. If you have NO expectations why even play or root? Just give up OK!!! Stop trying to pissss on the rest of our parade because you are a negative nellie.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Coaches all talking up talent are talking themselves out of a job if they don’t win.

  17. Dewey Selmon Says:

I have high hopes! Just burned out on being out of the playoff hunt by Halloween.

  18. Seminole Bill Says:

Player-by-player, position-by-position, we match up with any other NFL team. Except for QB. Ours is still in the learning mode, when he should be ready to excel. Whether Jameis steps up and becomes a mature NFL QB will make or break this season. And will make or break the employment on the coaching staff.

  19. Kobe Faker Says:

“Is Monken going to call plays this week vs Detroit?”

    #Kobe&Monk BFF

  20. SchwiftyBuc Says:

All I know is that if Todd Monken continues to generate 27-30 points a game (yeah i know it’s only preseason) Dirk should 100% relinquish play-calling duties and make Monken the OC not only in name.

Not only is Monk generating good scoring efforts, I’ve noticed a more relaxed Dirk Koetter the HC. As many have proposed including myself, maybe Dirk is just a flat out better coach without as much responsibility on his shoulders.

Does 4 years of consecutive play-calling between Dirk and Jameis REALLY matter when you consider that this offense has consistently struggled to generate more than 21 points a game during said tenure?

  21. SchwiftyBuc Says:

And Kobe I thought you despised Monken, or “Bart Simpson” as you called him so frequently. LOL. So much for you always being right about everything…

  22. DB55 Says:

Individualistic, I can still play well and I’m okay, we’re not talking about our old college team anymore
    ——————
He might as well have added “I converted a Rolls Royce into a bat mobile so I’m okay”. Sounds to me like he’s talking about the 5 star recruit mentality.

We got problems boys, large problems.

  23. Billy_43 Says:

Yeah I was confused on that math too Bobby.

Maybe his worst 12 games as a BUC

  24. Dooshlarue Says:

I swear Monken was thinking about Ol’ Softie when he was talking about personal accomplishments….

  25. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Billy and Bobby, just so you know Jameis did not turn the ball over 26 times in 12 games last year just FYI. He threw 11 picks and lost 7 fumbles. Work on your math first of all.

Also another nugget for you to swallow, is that according to Espn insiders, when you evaluate the Metrics, Jameis was at the same time, the 3rd most valuable QB in 2017, the 3rd most aggressive, and the 3rd most accurate.

No QB has EVER attained any modicum of success with an abysmal running game and a 32nd ranked Defense. Period end of sentence.

  26. Stanglassman Says:

Buddy don’t do math. He’s just a blowhard who likes to hear himself speak.

    Buddy or Monken?
Blowhard definition is – an arrogantly and pompously boastful or opinionated person : braggart, windbag.

  27. martinii Says:

    stpetebucsfan:

I agree, this is the time of year when you need to have hope, grasp on to anything that might indicate success and forget the negative crap. If you start kicking your team in the ass after 2 preseason wins, start rooting for another team. The easiest thing to do is criticize. Optimism is becoming a lost art which doesn’t speak well for human nature.

  28. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I think Monken is doing a good job calling plays but more important is the execution. The passes are on the money and the ones that aren’t have been caught via some amazing catches.
He wouldn’t commit to saying he is still going to call plays, but I think he let it slip later.
He said next game they need to get the run game going to build confidence and he then said, “that will be on me”.
So basically he admitted he will call plays vs the Lions.
Let’s open with Rojo and see what he can do.
    Go BUCS!!

  29. ✨INSIRED✨ Says:

Well Said El Buco, Very Well Saidđź‘Ť

  30. Darin Says:

Same thing they said last year. Then the coaches forgot to show up. And Dirk is getting votes of confidence in the weekly poll. I’m not buying it anymore until I see it. Every team in the league has talent too. Coaching wins games.

  31. Defense Rules Says:

@SwiftyBuc … “All I know is that if Todd Monken continues to generate 27-30 points a game (yeah i know it’s only preseason) Dirk should 100% relinquish play-calling duties and make Monken the OC not only in name.”

Agree 100% Swifty. Very few HCs can be effective when doing double-duty as the OC. Monken has done an overall excellent job this preseason from what I can see, although the Red Zone play-calling still needs some work (sure would help if we had a bruising RB to pound it in there, someone like say Mike Alstott).

  32. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Dewey

I hear ya but as an old time DJ forgive me if I got to the hit music again.

Chad and Jeremy describe your post which while not inaccurate fits their song.

“But that was yesterday and yesterday’s gone.”

If you study philosophy and the great thinkers certain thoughts keep reemerging. One of the most important admonitions is to live in the moment. We ONLY have this moment…the past is gone…OVER…the future is unknown.

So let’s enjoy the moment. I’ve expressed my unhappiness over JW’s three game suspension…hacks me off. But I do not deny his talent. This team can win with him. I like all the new additions…the draft…but that’s right now…this moment. Perhaps in six months I’ll hate the past but in the meantime…NOW…I still remain optimistic. But I certainly take your point.

  33. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I know it is easy to compare last year’s team with this year’s team but I beg to differ. The defense is almost completely revamp. New DBs and DL. We now have a kicker who can give us better field position and hopefully DJax can do some returns. No more relying on useless Doug Martin and I believe we upgraded two position on the line by getting a new center. Most of all I think the guys we got this year added toughness to the team.

  34. Godeep66 Says:

It does not help that the head coach is an overrated QB coach who was lucky to have Matt Ryan fall in his lap in Atlanta. That make Monken the water boy.

    stpetebucsfan Says
“How badly did the Bucs suck before Dungy turned it around. If there was a JBF back then it would be fun to review opinions of Dungy and staff after that first losing season.”

That was back when the Buccaneers website had a message board. Believe it or not, most were pretty obvious, except the trolls. And the trolls were obvious because they named their favorite team on their profile.

Gotta say, the absolute dumbest trash talkers were Falcons fans. They tried soooo hard, but looked stupid every time.

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Believe it or not, most were pretty ‘positive ‘, I meant.

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think Licht has had his best off season to date when you consider all he accomplished.

He got quality defensive veterans and young talent to develop. He pretty much fixed the entire secondary, the DLine and the OLine. All of his draft picks have a chance to make the team. The trade for JPP was genius.

The only weakness I don’t feel was properly addressed is RB, and I might still be wrong about that. Even if Jones and Barber fail, given all the other spots he fixed, it’s still been his best.

This has been the off season that pushed us over the edge.

  38. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bonzai- I wouldn’t say OL is fixed- addressed, yes. But still some upgrade needed.
