Done Enough

Roster status.

Joe isn’t walking out on a ledge to predict one specific roster spot has already been decided by the movers and shakers at One Buc Palace.

Joe would be totally stunned if rookie wide receiver Justin Watson was not on the Bucs roster late Saturday afternoon. The fifth-round pick from Penn showed just enough — which was actually a lot in a teeny, weenie sample size — to show he could be an Adam Humphries-like weapon for the Bucs if not maybe better.

In a short time Watson has traveled a long way from watching Bucs OTA practices from the sidelines with an injury to being a preseason star.

“After that slight setback that forced him to miss that first preseason game, I think he has continued to build on a real solid training camp,” Koetter said.

Watson didn’t waste much time last night displaying why he belongs on the roster when he caught a short pass from Ryan Griffin for the first Bucs’ score of the game. No, not a pass that will be remembered on video for decades, but the fact he was targeted suggests Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken trusted him.

Watson actually led the Bucs in receiving yards through the preseason with 13. He also was tied for the team lead in touchdown catches in the preseason with two.

The real drama isn’t that Watson will make the Bucs’ roster. It’s which receiver will be the sixth receiver (if the Bucs keep six receivers), Freddie Martino, Bobo Wilson or Bernard Reedy.

Love this kid. Plays more like Mike Evans than Adam Humphries, IMO. Bucs will keep 6 WR:

    -Evans
    -Jackson
    -Godwin
    -Humphries
    -Watson
    -Wilson

I think bobo is the last receiver. he has some wheels. But I also like Freddie Martino. He has always been reliable when called upon.

  3. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

He is easily one of my favorite additions to this team this year.

  4. Godeep66 Says:

He looks great. Should make the team.

  5. Trench War Says:

Watson sort of reminds me of Buc’s Super Bowl era WR Joe Jurevicius. They both even went to colleges in Pennsylvania.

  6. Wausa Says:

Watson is much faster than Joe Jurevicius

  7. Waterboy Says:

Watson is an easy decision he’ll definitely make the cut.

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

There was never an open spot for a WR. Martino is a lock, whether fans like it or not.

When Watson diid well it took the opportunity away from all the bubble guys.

Unless the Bucs keep 7, Bobo will be waived.

hump is reliable but has never been nor ever will be a weapon. that is just comical. Watson has a high ceiling hump is maxed out. hump is just another mediocre feel-good story low standard bucfan falls in love with and can’t let go of. hump is easily upgradeable with watson. humps boring punt returns during the regular season are like watching paint dry. conservative and reliable – yes. a weapon – no way in hell.

  10. Casual Observer Says:

Watson is definitely impressive. I’m sure most of the WRs cut will not last on the practice squad. Sadly for the Bucs, someone will pick them up. Too much talent at that position.

  11. TOM Says:

I believe Watson is a safe bet & Wilson should be #6

  12. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

What concerns me is the 13 yards let the team in recieving yards through the pre season!!!! Lol

  13. ATLBuc Says:

Because of his kick returning I think Wilson will get the 6 spot

  14. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

I actually agree with Tmax about Hump….

Hump’s plays are going to be taken away significantly by Godwin & Watson

    Ivy League, baby!!

“but the fact he was targeted suggests Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken trusted him.”

Normally I would quickly agree with that statement. But again this is why all the praise Monken is receiving for play calling in the PS is over the top. And again I really like Monken but the PS is not where you find out how good a play caller is.

Monken just as likely targeted him because the Bucs wanted to see just how good he can be before making their cuts.

When the Bucs start throwing to Watson in the REAL season then I’ll believe they trust him.

More of a mix of Hump/Jurevicious, Joe. Great hands. So freakin strong and fast. 40″ vertical.

  18. Bob in Valrico Says:

There should be 3 new “W”s onthe team of the non edible variety.Watson, Shuan Wilson an
    and Bobo Wilson.

  19. bojim Says:

Does any other team have a Bobo? Then why not us? I ask you.

  20. unbelievable Says:

Watson’s ceiling is way higher than Hump’s, he’s just gotta keep grinding.

I dont’ see Reedy making the team. That last spot is between Bobo and Martino.
