Carlton Davis Shows Promise

August 10th, 2018

Did his hometown proud.

It wasn’t the greatest debut of a Bucs defender, but the longer he stayed in the game, the better he got.

Joe’s talking about Bucs rookie cornerback Carlton Davis.

One can imagine Davis had the jitters. He’s from Miami. Grew up watching Dolphins games. Like just about any young American male, Davis grew up dreaming of playing in the NFL but specifically someday playing on the turf of Joe Robbie Stadium.

(Yes, Joe knows the Crib of the Fish has a flavored name of the month. The current name is cool but Joe will always call that place Joe Robbie Stadium just like he will always call the home of the Jags the Gator Bowl.)

Playing last night before a lot of family and friends in his first NFL game appearance, Davis said he wasn’t nervous or distracted but focused. That’s because he knew he had a job to do.

“I wanted to give a good show for my family,” Davis said.

Davis finished with five tackles and two passes defended.

In Joe’s eyes, Davis did nothing to dispel the notion that he should be starting next month.

Kid has skill. At one point I had to stop and catch myself, I was feeling a happiness that Seattle felt with thier legion of boom. Now think, if these kids develop, we have 3 starting corners 24 and under (Hargraeves, Stewart, Davis) and 2 kids at safety (Evan’s and Whitehead). If they get, BRO!!!

  2. Bird Says:

    Agree

I believe he should already be 3rd ranked db. He will only get better with more reps. However , don’t give to many in preseason cause we need healthy

Ryan smith should be ranked behind the dang water boy. Get smith outa hear. Other team clearly throwing to whoever he was marking Seen enough from him. Bring in bashaud breeland today for cheap.

  3. passthebuc Says:

Whitehead looks like the 2nd coming of John Lynch the way he hits.

  4. passthebuc Says:

    @RBF
Agree they look promising, but, with Smith’s defense playing off 15 yards, will anyone notice during the games.

  5. FairMinded Says:

Smith got burned a couple times sure but not ready to trash the guy. Coach Smith’s continued insistence on 10-15 yard cushions ain’t helping any of these guys develop

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I listened to the game and it sounded like our pass defense was awful….but again, we got little pressure on the QBs.

Give all these guys a chance to perform for a couple more games…..I like our young DBs….sounded like Whitehead showed up.

Practicing against our great WR corps should be really helping them.

Whitehead had 2 hits and all of a sudden hes john lynch 2.0. yall dumb af lol

What a tool you must be.

I said same thing. He not comparing his level of play to a tampa legend. More that he is trying to hit a guy so Hard he almost knocks himself out.

Keep being negative tho. Nice poster name too.

You didn’t quote him saying anything about being focused on a job. 🙂 he wanted to show off for his family and friends. Still, I know he can do both.

  10. Louis Says:

He looked good, I’m glad we have him.
Joe, any chance of your asking Mike Smith why he insists on the dbacks playing off coverage. With the group he has, press is simpler and the background of play was press. Working to the strengths of the personnel makes sense to many of us .
    Thanks

  11. ChanEpic Says:

@Louis – I want to know the same thing. I am hopeful they were keeping it super vanilla and running base style D (even though playing off as our base has me concerned) but I thought they were giving too much of a cushion like last year and sometimes the results were the same. Catches made and no CB anywhere near the receiver happened often last night and I hope we address it as the season goes on.

  12. Bucsfanman Says:

I thought all the rookie DBs played decent. We might have a couple of gems there.
What concerns me is that our DBs are continually playing way off the LOS.

  13. BucTrooper Says:

I will take Davis’ worst day over Ryan Smith’s best day.

  14. Broy34 Says:

My biggest concern about the team is the defenders playing with stupid amounts of cushion. Didn’t watch last night and I’m very disappointed that it’s continuing. It doesn’t matter how good the corners or d line is/are when qbs can just sling it to the sideline immediately

  15. 813bucboi Says:

yeah the DB’s played good last night…..

I guess we can call smitty a f’ing liar…..he said he gives CB’s the freedom to line up where ever but they all line up 12yards off….barber said time and time again, Davis’s strength is man press up at the LOS…..

and folks bashing RS29 just chill…..the few plays he played up at the LOS he had good coverage and the pass was incomplete….

smitty is “Mr. Coach My Scheme”…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  16. Walkergodeep Says:

Ryan Smith is the worst corner I’ve ever seen in my life

^^^Yep dood nothing has changed. DLINE can’t get pressure and Smitty makes them play soft. Translation: Field Day for any QB in the league. Davis might change all that, if he can control his third and make plays al la Revis but this secondary can’t make a play to save their lives right now. Very worrisome. Someone has to emerge and QUICK!

  18. Dre-Day Says:

lol i’ve been a Bucs fan for a looooooooong time. Ryan Smith is not the “worst corner” we’ve ever had by a longshot. See Martin Mayhew from the 90’s.

The Bucs current problem, which has carried on from last year, and continues now, is not the play of our personnel. Our problem is the predictability of Mike Smith’s defenses. Especially in the 4th quarter. Every team we play has a chance because they’ve figured out his scheme by the 2nd half. He needs to figure out how to keep opposing offensive play callers on their toes. We are too predictable scheme-wise.

  19. AmericasEnabler Says:

Dre-Day is a retard. Mayhew one of the worst?! You really think that? You drunk or something?

Ok BIRD haha stop being an Internet hero. Everyone has their opinion so shut the fak up ho.

FA run stuffers Beau Allen and Unrein? How’s that working out. Pass rush? What pass rush? Funny, I don’t recall hearing Curry’s name mentioned even once. I was looking to see Buckner’s crew in the Fin’s backfield all night, but I counted three penetrations, Spence, McCoy and JPP. That does not cut it. I would say the Dolphin QB’s wont even have to wash their jerseys. Gase was quoted as saying his QB’s had time to ‘peel and orange’ all night long. If last night represents our Dline improvement, then I’m pretty sure Matty Ice, Brees and Cam aren’t real concerned. I’ll take the win, but I really want to see some pressure. Vicious, unrelenting, murderously brutal pressure. I’ll wager Buckner goes off big time on his crew when the game tape get broken down. Would love to be a fly on the wall during that well deserved arse chewing!

  22. Bucamania Says:

I guess you didn’t see Curry blow up the RT and cause the QB to step into GMC on that sack? Might want to go watch that play again.

  23. Bucamania Says:

Or JPP throw the LT into the QB on that critical 3rd down play in the red zone. Incomplete.

  24. Pickgrin Says:

Davis played well. Stewart played well.

Very encouraging to see both rookie CBs making plays in their 1st game!

Ryan Smith didn’t have a good game – but he’s certainly better than some of you are saying. You’ll see – Ryan Smith can make plays too. Smith will come back next week and look much better vs the Titans I bet.

  25. Buccfan37 Says:

I thought Davis looked real good also, definitely a keeper.

  26. SOEbuc Says:

His length makes him the new type of successful CB in the league since you can’t play good, man to man coverage without getting a PI.
