Bobo Wants A Job

August 30th, 2018

Strong preseason finale.

The Bucs are going to have some tough calls on their hands in slicing the roster down to 53 by Saturday afternoon. And Bobo Wilson made that even more difficult.

Wilson, who has battled injuries this training camp and preseason, balled out Thursday night. He had 51 yards on five catches in the loss to the Jags.

Last year, Wilson had an impressive fourth preseason game, just like tonight. Wilson didn’t make the final-53 last year but did make it to the practice squad and was promoted to the roster in November.

Tonight, Wilson not only made key catches, he also racked up 120 yards on five kickoff returns. It seems a given that rookie Justin Watson will be the fifth wide receiver but will Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht keep six receivers? Or seven?

If Licht is to keep six, Wilson would be fighting Freddie Martino and return specialist Bernard Reedy, who did well tonight as a receiver too, leading the Bucs with five catches for 56 yards.

Wide receiver “is definitely our strength,” Licht said during his appearance on the game TV broadcast seen on WFLA-TV Channel 8. “Bobo is having a nice night. Justin Watson, I have been very impressed with him. Freddie Martino has been very steady. The guys at the bottom end [of the roster for receivers] — it is going to be a tough decision.”

    One vote for Bobo

  2. Not there yet Says:

Not that tough to decide between Martino, reedy and Wilson because they’ve been around long enough not to be outplayed by a rookie Justin Watson. Give it to Bobo and move on from the guys who every freaking season are on the bubble that’s just stupid that you keep guys who every year are on the verge of getting cut.

  3. Season Is Over Says:

Bobo has more yards on one run than Ohno does all preseason.

  4. Joe Says:

    Not there:

The tipping point for who stays and who gets run among those three is likely special teams.

  5. SOEbuc Says:

I said Martino last night but I’ve changed my vote. Got to see him play a lot tonight and he looked great on returns. Put him back there on kickoffs. Hump on punt returns.

  6. buc15 Says:

    bobo fo sho

  7. Pick6 Says:

I didn’t see the catches, but 10 yards per catch and 24 yards per return doesn’t quite sound like seizing the opportunity by the throat

  8. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

We can’t let Bobo go that’s fo show! Go Bucs!

  9. cmurda Says:

He was solid Pick6. The numbers lie. He looked quick and shifty. The 10 yards a catch are more of a reflection of having Ryan Griffin and Bryan Austin-Green or whatever his name is throwing him the ball.

  10. Bob in Valrico Says:

Hope , both Bobo and Shuan Wilson make the team along with Watson.

  11. AlabamaBucFan Says:

Bobo will make the team based upon his ability to return kicks not as a WR. There is no need to keep beyond 5 WRs unless the 6th spot is for special teams.

  12. Wausa Says:

The Two Wilson’s looked like guys that should be on an NFL roster.
If either gets cut they will be claimed by another team.

  13. johnnybuc Says:

i’d be pissed if they decide for martino over bobo. we know what martino is. he’s not getting any better . no reason to keep him

  14. FairMinded Says:

Shaun Wilson was the better return man than Bobo and he also outplayed RoJo at RB. That guy looks shifty and dangerous. If it comes down to it I keep the extra RB (who can also catch passes) over any of the three between Bobo, Reedy and Martino unless one of those guys is the gunner on ST

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If a player did not play last night, it was either due to injury or because they’ve already made the team.

So far as I know, Freddie Martino is not injured, therefore the Bucs are keeping him. That means there is really only on WR spot open.

Anyone here believe Watson would make it through Waivers? No? Then he’s got that 6th spot.

Therefore, Bobo is getting cut and was always going to get cut. He would probably clear waivers though, so he’ll return to the Practice Squad.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And Shaun Wilson will do returns.

  17. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

As much as the media played up WR as a spot to solidify, it wasn’t one of the positions with a real opening, just like RB wasn’t.

The real spots are on the lines and in the secondary.

Martino is better than you give him credit for, and Winston likes him. That means a lot.

You’re going to be mad, because Martino making the team was never in question. The only chance Bobo had of making the team is if Watson was not good enough, or if the Bucs kept seven WRs.

    Will they keep seven?

It’s possible. They kept and extra tightend last year…and Johnson is 29 and played all game last night, which means he might get cut. Wilson gets the last RB spot by default. If Sims had not been injured, Wilson would have been cut. They won’t keep 5 RBs.

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Linebacker is going to have some interesting cuts.

  20. Pryda... sec147 Says:

    Watson and Bobo

  21. Pickgrin Says:

Bobo without question needs to be on this team over Martino.

Not sure why you think Martino is such a lock a Bonzai. I’d say its leaning the other direction after last night’s effort by Bobo. Did you watch the game Bonzai? Martino did play. No catches but he was out there.

Bobo is faster, quicker, more athletic, more capable of getting YAC and making big plays than Martino. He’s younger and definitely has more upside than Freddie.

Martino is fairly steady with his route running and catching – so he wouldn’t be a bad choice for 6th receiver.

But 6th receiver HAS to contribute on special teams. Watson and Bobo both fit the bill in that regard. I’d have no problem at all with either young Wilson being our #1 kick off returner to start the season and hope both Shaun and Bobo stick. Some strong UDFA talent in both those guys that needs to be given a chance to blossom as Bucs – not for some other team.

reedy stepped up and so did bobo…..I say bobo….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  23. Trench War Says:

I guess the guys with PS eligibility will be the ones who end up on the PS. If they make through waivers first.

  24. BucNole Says:

Yep – I think Bobo is the logical choice. . . he has a nice little second gear that seems to pop out at you on returns and pass plays
Watson is a lock – there is no way you cut this guy
Wilson is a lock as well
There are gonna be a lot of good football players cut over the next few days
I wonder if Spence is gonna be one of them

  25. Owlykat Says:

The 53 man roster needs to include Wilson, Wilson, and Rogers!
