No silver lining, says the head coach
Joe got a resounding one-word answer today from head coach Dirk Koetter.
Either the question struck a nerve, Joe believes, or Koetter thought it was foolish.
During his post-practice news conference, Koetter referenced the early fumble today by rookie running back Ronald Jones. Joe was rather certain it was Kwon Alexander with the strip, but Koetter talked about rookie M.J. Stewart flashing in and making the play.
Whoever it was broke fast on the ball. Great defense.
But about that fumble, Joe asked Koetter if it can be a good thing for a rookie to fumble early in training camp, so perhaps it serves as a wake-up call?
“No!” Koetter barked at Joe!
It’s been a tough start for Jones, who really hasn’t looked special yet, and his hands appear to be a bit of a liability in the passing game. Of course, you can’t really judge a running back until he gets preseason touches with the first team.
We’re just 11 days from that.

Joe Joe Joe! We knew BEFORE we drafted Jones that he had sticks of butter for hands when it came to the passing game. Honestly I don’t care if he can catch in the backfield because we have a stable of legit WRs and we drafted him solely for the position he plays, RUNNING BACK! Now as for the answer To gave you,NO it’s good that a rookie fumbles this early because it could break his confidence in playing in the league. But in a way it’s good because it’s real early in training camp and now they know that’s something that they need to address.

Ronald Jones will probably have a Devonta Freeman type rookie year, and then he’ll burst on to the scene as a star after Dirk and Mike Smith get fired. Hope I’m wrong, but I still find this coaching staff to be suspect.
Hope I’m wrong, but the attitude they’ve showcased throughout the entire offseason that all of last seasons problems were all on the players not executing and had nothing to do with coaching/scheme, is more than disheartening.

Ronald Jones might get 10 carries a game. It’s going to be Barbers show this season. A 200-209LB back is ok when he’s 5-8 and has muscle. 6-0 and 200 has me concerned if he’s supposed to be a 20 carry a game RB. I just hope he can be a 15 carry guy and break a few long ones now and then if he can’t be a workhorse.

This reminds me of all the negative reaction to MJ Stewart before the 1st OTA practice. You’d think that all those people who prematurely criticized that pick would think twice about looking foolish again so soon.
Rojo will be fine he got stripped today and couldn’t adjust to a 60 yard wheel route the 1st time in his life he was every ask to do it.

Jones had 19 td’s and averaged 6 yards a carry at USC
That’s more rushing td’s than the Bucs have had for the last 2 years

That’s just not true. Vernon flashed excellent potential constantly and racked up a ton of picks in that conference. The only receiver that got Hargreaves goat in the SEC was Amari Cooper.
Ronald Jones has wicked good burst, his size leaves something to be desired, but he more than makes up for it with play-making ability and break away speed. And don’t give me that “he looked like crap against Bama” bs because so did Leonard Fournette, and that didn’t stop him from busting all over the Steelers faces for 200 yards and like 3 touchdowns last season.
When Jones received even a modicum of daylight as a Trojan, he gashed defenses. You don’t get 1500 yards and 19 rushing touchdowns if your some kind of bum who cant play.
