“You Have To Win Some More Games, Jameis”

June 4th, 2018

Growing reputation.

Even the folks on the set of the NFL Network know it.

In what is commonly referred to as filler or empty chatter to transition from subjects on TV news sets, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, became a topic of conversation today on “Good Morning, Football,” the weekday morning show on NFL Network.

(Honestly, is there such a thing as empty chatter when Kay Adams is on the screen — except for Ira who is not a fan of her?)

At any rate, the NFL Network recently switched to new studios in midtown Manhattan and during a news break this morning, news anchor Will Selva, broadcasting from the NFL Network’s Los Angeles-area based studios, mocked Adams for forgetting in their move to bring along their figurine of Jameis Winston, the show’s very first guest. The figurine used to be placed prominently as part of the studio’s NFL-themed design.

Selva held up a Jameis figurine offering it as a replacement. But no, Adams noted, the “Good Morning, Football” gang still had their Jameis’ figurine, and she held it up for all to see for evidence.

It was then that co-host Peter Schrager, who Joe believes is a closet Bucs fan, stated, “You have to win some more games, Jameis, to be in the foreground.”

Eloquent words indeed.

For Jameis and the Bucs to receive notoriety, accolades and attention, the team (led by Jameis) has to start winning. Jameis can have all the gaudy stats and franchise records he wants, but if he and the Bucs don’t start winning, it doesn’t matter.

Joe fears Jameis is in danger of becoming the next Jeff George, a guy that racked up all sorts of eye-popping stats, but rarely had wins to go with those stats.

(And no, Joe isn’t comparing Jameis, who has every intangible a coach or team could ever want from a quarterback, to George, who was a complete igit but had a golden arm. Joe is just comparing results.)

Is it fair for Jameis that a moribund, Cleveland-south franchise rests on his shoulders? No, but that’s life in the NFL. Quarterbacks selected in the first round are at some point expected to lead a team to wins, not to set a team up year after year with another high first round pick and a potential coaching search while a speedometer of individual stats climbs.

Joe loves Jameis but Joe also loves wins.

Jameis craves to be great. Can’t be great without wins.

Below, enjoy a moment of the chat Jameis had on Friday afternoon with former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio. Jameis discussed how the Bucs needed wins.

Defense wins championships….. If the offense averages 20 pts. Per game and the defense holds the other team to 14 to 17 pts. Per game you win. Nuff said…

  2. AlteredEgo Says:

All Jameis has to do is hold up his end of the “Stick”….

  3. Ghingus Kwon Says:

    @Tnoles – Thanks for the math lesson…

  4. webster Says:

    Dear Jameis

Please leave this idiot fan base as soon as you can. They do not deserve you.

  5. Tnoles Says:

Don’t thank me thank the Joe’s for allowing me to State the obvious. Now that we might have a decent running game (again might) and weapons on the outside to me this team will only go as far as the defense takes them.

  6. ChipBuc Says:

My god if i hear one more host of a nfl based show say Winston needs to win more games I’ll explode. I guess that Winston plays defense, Special teams (field goal kicker), Running back, and coaches the team all at once. To say Winston has to win more games is true at face value. But I’ll venture to say it’s a miracle he’s won as many games as he has. If Winston had been drafted by Dallas instead of the Bucs, i have no doubt he would have been in the playoffs already. Football unlike any other sport is a Team game. You win as a team, and lose as a team. Give Winston a balanced team and he will have no trouble wining games.

  7. Greg Says:

A better defense of course will help Jameis get more victories but unfortunately until Drew Brees retires Sean Payton retires and Atlanta slows down I don’t see the Buccaneers winning the division which makes it tough in the playoffs

  8. Joe Says:

Better stock up on some liquor. Three months before season kicks off.

  9. Gino Says:

Geez this Tnoles guy is either a Rhodes Scholar or the illegitimate spawn of Father Dungy. Except Dungy wasn’t an excuse machine.

  10. ChipBuc Says:

    Don’t i know it Joe.

  11. Joe Says:

    Don’t i know it Joe.

Season cannot come quick enough, man. 🙁

  12. DB55 Says:

Jameis reminds me of Matt Stafford.

Matt has had 2 double-digit wins seasons in 9 years, yet he earns 160 mil dollars (highest paid player in the nfl at the time) and is rarely if ever criticized.

Matt also had a DT who could actually stop people in short yardage situations. And oddly enough Matt didn’t become consistent in terms of wins until the best players on the team left.

    First 3 years:
    Matt Stafford = 18 wins
    Jameis Winston = 16 wins

yet there are some “fans” who would chose not to re-sign him or not pay him.

Different strokes for different folks I guess…

  13. stpetebucsfan Says:

Thomas Bassenger who has become my favorite numbers and stats guy had a great piece in the Times yesterday about how bogus it is to look at last year’s records and make any pronouncements.

He showed several teams last year who were believed to have really tough schedules before the season but ended up actually having one of the easiest when it was all said and done.

Bassenger makes another great point….Getting the good teams early is best because the really good teams tend to play their worst football early…see the Saints O-2 start last year…and then as the season goes on they become really good teams. They improve!!!

If he’s healthy Jameis wins games this year….if ROJO is the real deal and he and Barber together combine for 1500 yards of total offense we are playoff bound.

    “It’s as simple as that!”

  14. Tnoles Says:

Nice Gino attack a fan for giving his opinion about what I think we all know as a fan base. All I was doing is replying to the comment from the national media. So Gino instead of trolling previous commenters why don’t you enlighten us to your brilliance and tell us what your thoughts are on the article. Trust me Gino I’m not holding my breath to hear what you have to say.

  15. jmarkbuc Says:

    Webster

That is an asinine point of view. JW is an (average to below average) NFL QB at this point. We aren’t married to him. He can either stop making boneheaded turnovers, and learn to throw a ball that is accurate and doesn’t hang his receivers out to dry or he can’t.

Has nothing to do with the fan base. He will get better or he won’t. Fans will remain the same.

  16. Jimmy Says:

    >>>Honestly, is there such a thing as empty chatter when Kay Adams is on the screen — except for Ira who is not a fan of her?<<<

What the hell is wrong with Ira?

  17. Gino Says:

Tnoles-EAT THE W was the end for me. Was hoping for a much better year. Yes he had a boo-boo but ultimately the guy has lost me as well as the majority of the other members of this team as a leader. This ain’t college. This is the big time. Guy doesn’t have what it takes. EAT THE W was his crowning moment as a total failure.

  18. DB55 Says:

    Jmark and all others

Matt Stafford had 53 INTs his first full 3 years in the league vs 44 for Jameis.

Again different strokes for different folks.

  20. Tnoles Says:

Well Gino that’s your opinion and I respect that. I don’t think he has lost his leadership role in the locker room. The kid has had no running game, a JV squad playing defense last year and a lousy kicking game. I think he has been asked to do too much and he is a competitor so he tries to do too much. I have a better topic for the Joe’s instead of Jamies needing to win more games how about where has McCoy been in the 4th qtr. Of games when impact players make plays to impact the game? 6 pro bowls is great but how about making a play ( like sacking the qb.) late in the 4th to end their hopes of winning the game. That’s why I was talking about defense.

  21. Gino Says:

Tnoles that is not entirely wrong but I would have to say the defensive side of the ball has been addressed much less than the offensive and yet has yet to strike paydirt. However the joke of a running game is painful as well. I was just hugely disappointed by this team in 2017 and in my mind an awful lot of the fault lies at Winston’s feet.

  22. DB55 Says:

Don’t waste your breathe, ButMan McIceCream can do no wrong around these here parts.

Offseasons suck for fans of a team coming off a 5-11 season.

Whenever the team is not on the field practicing/improving/preparing for the upcoming season – All anyone who gets paid to talk/write really has to talk/write definitively about is last year’s sucky results.

So it carries on and on and on and on…..

C’mon, the offseason is glorious. Hope restores itself. The build-up makes everything taste sweeter when training camp arrives. Embrace the day. –Joe

So he’s outperforming Tom Brady in his 3rd year? And Tommy boy had a defense to count on. Go figure!

Looks like Derek Carr may have had the same stats too. Derek Carr got a new coach too. And at least 2 HOF’ers on his team. Yet only managed to win 6 games.

That’s right jmark don’t let facts get in the way of your inaccurate preconceived notions.

  31. Dapostman Says:

Winston 2017 by Next Gen Stats
average completed air yards = 7.9
average intended air yards = 10.7

    Tom Brady = 7.1 & 9.4
    Drew Brees = 5.8 & 7.1
    Big Ben = 6.4 & 9.5
    Matt Ryan = 6.6 & 9.0
    Russell Wilson = 7.5 & 10.1
    Carson Wentz = 7.9 & 10.2
    Aaron Rodgers = 5.5 & 7.4
    Ryan Fitzpatrick = 7.6 & 9.3

Even Fitzpatrick was throwing the ball down the field. Must be the designed offense.

  32. Bucsfanman Says:

Look, we can roll out all the excuses that we want to. In the end, the object is winning. I think we can all agree that we knew that there was going to be a learning curve for the guy, he landed on the worst team in the NFL! Had the offense been lights-out, I think we could give him a pass. It wasn’t and he was partially to blame, injury or not.
Now we’re year 4 with a multitude of offensive weapons. Either his game elevates or it doesn’t. When your team is 5-11, there aren’t a whole lot of positives. I think that we’re exhausting excuses unnecessarily because in the end, it’s about winning and we win as a team. Everybody has to be accountable.

  33. jmarkbuc Says:

    Red Zone Stats

    Comp Att % TD
    Jameis Winston 22 44 45.83 12 and worse inside the 10

    Tom Brady 56 90 58.3 26 and five rings

  34. DB55 Says:

    bucsfan

Nope, I’m just pointing out the fact that another #1 overall pick lost more games than jameis and threw more interceptions yet was awarded with the highest paid contract at the time. Meanwhile Jameis Winston is shunned by his own fan base and told he’s not good enough.

My advise to Jameis would be this: if the TB Bucs fan base thinks you suck, have character concerns or that you are a thug and should be on another team, REJOICE, bc that’s the fastest way to get a SB ring. See Blount, Bennett, Talib and Doug Williams.

One of these things is not like the other, OH WAIT, they are all exactly alike. hmmm, hmmmm, very interesting.

  35. jmarkbuc Says:

    DB

C’mon man..do you alwatys have to go there?

“shunned by his fan base and told he’s not good enough”

Go over the deep end much?

Right now HE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH, and there are alot of QBs, black and white who have been overall number one busts..JW might be a great man, helps little old ladies across the street, is kind to little kids.. so what. So do I. I don’t get paid to be a QB though…

Personally, I hope JW becomes a superstar, here in Tampa..a lot remains to be proven before he’s crowned the best thing ever, however.

  36. Anonymous Says:

I don’t hear any excuses from this guy, he’s working hard and leading in the right direction. Defense defense defense…. We had games in the bag and got shredded on d.

  37. Bucsfanman Says:

DB55- I think it would be idiotic to argue that Jameis is not the best QB we’ve seen in a Buc uniform. Stafford is a good comparison because he too went to a bad football team IMO.
I think the “shunning” is overblown, frankly. It’s always the haters that are the loudest. I have to believe that most Buc fans are just frustrated by the incessant losing and the never-ending parade of lame-a$$ excuses year after year. A football fan worth their salt can easily recognize that Jameis is an asset to this organization. Like Stafford, he’s had no run-game and suspect defenses for much of his career. However, like most on this team, he does need more work and that’s my only contention. You can see it in glimpses then, BAM, he erases it in a split-second bad decision.
If it’s as you say, we’re a worse fanbase than I thought! It’s tough not to draw conclusions.

  38. Gambelero Says:

I’ve got a couple of buddies that run a fan site. They work holidays, 365 days a year. Their work is harder than digging ditches or coal mining. They have to try to find the right words, the right grammatical construction, the right tone, finessing their way into riling up both the haters and the die-hard supporters in the same post.

They deserve a winning team, one that stays relevant till at least Thanksgiving. If Jameis doesn’t bring it, we’re looking at draft talk in early October. My buddies deserve better.

  39. DB55 Says:

    Gambelero

Jameis brought it last season. He improved in every virtually every category.

my questions is when are you people going to start trying to run ButMan McIceCream out of town?

Dude is singlehandedly responsible for 4 losses but you guys wants to blame Chris Baker and hoist McIceCream to the HOF. SMFH I often wonder about you guys.

  40. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Jameis is already the most important buc of all time. Not saying much considering the garbage this franchise has produced outside of gauden’s glory year.

Jameis is not the problem the heartless soft defense captained by frauds is the problem.

I cannot even reply to half your non-sense. Yet again DB55 knows absolutely nothing in his stat comparisons. Stafford doesn’t get any criticism? I guess you are more dialed into the Lions then I am, as someone from there? The vast majority of NFL fans there cannot stand him, he’s won zero playoff games but been there 3 times.

He did not finish 13 games his first 2 seasons, so how do you compare? They drafted him after an 0-16 season, year 3 went over 5k 41td’s and 16 picks, 97.2 with zero running game ever oh and btw they made the playoffs.. Did not regress and has never been in trouble at the college or NFL level.

Please stop comparing NFL QB’s that have leads and one’s that do not like Brady. He was the definition of a game manager his first 3-4 years because of a good all around team.

Time for Jameis to lead this team this year, if we lose a bunch of games because of the d then so be it, so far say it’s 50/50.

I guess you are more dialed into the Lions then I am, as someone from there? He’s had a ton of 4th quarter comebacks, he’s also been the main reason a lot of games as to why they needed those. The vast majority of NFL fans there cannot stand him, he’s won zero playoff games but been there 3 times.

He did not finish 13 games his first 2 seasons, so how do you compare? Go Bucs!

  43. ndog Says:

I ask one question on most Jameis threads and have yet to get a response.

People tell me the QB in the history of the game, that won games with the worst defense in the league, the worst kicker in the league and the 27th ranked rushing game in the league. I will wait……

    Then don’t fckn reply!

Your best ability is availability is it not? Even if you take his first 4 years he only won 16 games.

Point is Matt gets a record-breaking contract for doing jack chit his first 4 years and Jameis get public ridicule for being the best young QB in the league.

  45. Lamarcus Says:

    Ndog

U gotta have LeBron James at Qb to do that. So now we are expecting LeBron James Qb type player out of JW?? Oh boy. This fanbase is screwed….

  46. Ndog Says:

    Exactly Lamarcus exactly.

  47. mark2001 Says:

Is it fair to expect Jameis to play like the best QB, the first pick in the draft a few years ago? Yes. If we chose the wrong guy… if he wasn’t worthy of the first pick in the draft…no…then it isn’t fair to Jameis. It isn’t like he was a second or third round reach, after all. I don’t know he is the best QB in our division. Hope this is the breakout year. Sorry if the truth hurts.

  48. Ndog Says:

Yes mark2001 it is to much ask that a QB in the 3rd year of his career to be the best QB in the league. The fact that you ask that question is truly ludicrous.

  49. Mike10 Says:

    Finally!!

    Some accountability where needed!

  50. @Webster Says:

    Webster is to JW
    WHAT
    Hawaiian Buc is to GMC.

    Please, just open your eyes.
    That’s all I ask.

  51. mark2001 Says:

Ndog… I said this coming year…I don’t care what he did last year. And sure ..by the 4th year it need to happen. And why? Because if he doesn’t look like a first pick in the draft four years ago, Koetter will be out, and his staff, and possibly Licht. And Jameis will be in the last year of his contract with a new coach, and a new GM…a guy that won’t risk his career extending the contract of a fifth year QB that may or may not deserve top 10 QB money. A new system for the team to learn as well. So yes…this is the big year for Jameis to put up or risk becoming known as a coach and GM career killer.

  52. Eric Says:

No matter what time of the day the minute an article comes out about Jameis not being so great the same people come to defend him as if they were paid to do so. Its pathetic yet funny at the same time. It’s almost like they are robots who respond with statistics to mask the overall stench of his play.
I clearly remember hearing people say that our fortunes would change once the messiah arrived and yet here we are on the heels of a 5-11 season where he got outplayed by a 30 something year old has been.
I dont recall us renting a different defense, coaching staff, and running backs during his 2-1 record. People keep saying he hasn’t had a defense “2016 we weren’t great but at least average and if I do recall we had the top running back tandem during his time here so last year is the only year he gets the benefit of that overblown claim.

While stats show he wasnt the worst in the league, if you watched his games last year you have to be blind not to see how bad he was by watching him play. What I saw was a guy with a loaded recieving cor,
Two young stud TE’s and a decent O line yet cant even average 20 points a game despite most of our top draft picks a free agency pick ups were on the offensive side of the ball. I’d expect to have something resembling the Rams of the early 2000’s (greatest show on turf) dont remember them having a great defense but they just made sure they scored 30 points a game. Stop blaming the coaching staff as well, both coaches have led multiple teams to successful seasons, they coach and players have to make the plays which even they admit was the problem NOT COACHING! I’m no hater but I do hate losing and just like every team the Qb takes all the grief and all the glory. Maybe he should do what he was drafted so high to do…Win games!
If he wins this all goes away but until then, myself and other loyal Bucfans will continue to want more and criticize when its deserved. To some idiots it’s a FSU VS. UF thing but I think college football fanaticism is stupid and childish so it’s not the reason I point out his flaws. So no but hurt Gator fan here!

  53. JabooBuc Says:

I can’t get over the lack of foresight by our fans. JW is 23 and has led this team since day 1 after being drafted as a 20 yr old redshirt sophomore. Three years under his belt as a 23 ye old is unheard of.

I believe this is his year. But even if he just duplicates last year, if this TEAM produces in other areas, they will win. Just amazed that people don’t see it.

  54. JabooBuc Says:

Eric is just dumb. Outplayed by who? Fitz? He went 2-1 playing the Jets, Dolphins and Falcons. Did you watch those games? Miami literally gave us that game with 5 TO’s and we still had to pull it out with a FG in the end.

We beat the Jets 15-10. FItz was on fire with 17-34 passing (that’s 50% clueless) for 181 yards and a INT.

And then he went to Atlanta and got curb stomped. No TD’s and down 20-6 at half.

Please just stop with your moronic takes. Even Fitz knows who the better QB is and it’s not close.

  55. ben Says:

… yep the games Fits won was because the other team wanted to lose to the bucs . That can be the only reason ,right?

  56. Anonymous Says:

You need to recheck those Stafford’s stats you spouted…37 INTs in first 3 years and he only played 13 games in first 2 years.

Dont slant the stats to favor Winston. Stafford was 10-6 in year 3.

Every QB since the merger has been measured by wins and losses. Im sticking with Winston but he does need some WINS! Media is 100% right about that; its really the only major thing missing…talent is there.

Ahhh, the other dope named Ben. Yes, Ben, Fitz played just well enough to beat the Jets and Dolphins. Congrats on your spot on analysis. If only we could have played them each game last year. I suppose by your logic he must be he best QB to ever play in this town with that winning %.

    Please give it up.

  59. Ugandan Knuckles Says:

He can’t win them all on his own.

  60. mark2001 Says:

Knuckles…you are correct…he can’t win them on his own. But with the rest of the offense built around him, unless the D literally S’s the bed, and he is as talented as we think, he should be able to put us over the top. May QB’s would salivate to lead this offense.

  61. Blue-footed booby Says:

Winston will not win enough games, in fact since he is one of the worst if not the worst starting QB in the NFC we will be searching for a new QB next year, and I’m thinking Nick Foles would be considered as an option by the new front office in free agency by then.
