Name-dropping Hint

April 28th, 2018

The next MJD?

Generally, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter doesn’t like to compare players.

For example, in his press conference after Day 2 of the draft wrapped up, Koetter was asked to compare a draft pick to a current player and Koetter politely begged out of the question as he said he was uncomfortable doing that.

Some folks in the NFL don’t think it is fair for a rookie to be compared to an NFL veteran for it may put unreasonable expectations on the rookie.

But on purpose or accidentally, Koetter dropped a name he had great success with in another NFL life when discussing the traits of new Bucs running back Ronald Jones. Koetter was explaining how Jones, who plays at 210, breaks tackles like a lot of his college peers who weigh some 20 pounds heavier. Then Koetter said the following of Jones:

“He is not as big as some of those other guys,” Koetter said. Jones “is at 210, 209. That’s what Maurice Jones-Drew was when we had him in Jacksonville. [Weighing] 209 was when he played his best.”

Man, if Jones turns out to be the next MJD, whose worst year under Koetter was running for 768 yards, that’s not a shabby running back to be plucked out of the second round.

MJD (four inches shorter than Jones) had three straight 1,300-yard seasons with Koetter as his offensive coordinator.

Nope. Not MJD. He reminds me of a Reggie Bush who likes running inside.

  2. Jeagan1999 Says:

Love to see the Bucs follow up by getting a big bruiser, like Ryan Nall out of Oregon St. That would give the team a contrast to the smaller backs in the stable, like Jones, Simms and Rodgers.

  3. Rick Says:

Been a SC fan since birth. Been a Bucs fan since their birth in 1976. I am so happy I could explode we drafted RJII.

  4. BucFamous Says:

I would definitely like to see the Bucs pick up a complementary back in today’s rounds.

  5. Greg Says:

I’d like to see us get the fullback from OU in the 5th round.

  6. Destinjohnny Says:

    A faster Cadillac Williams

  7. gotbbucs Says:

He’s just comparing weight. Jones and MJD are not the same style RB.

  8. Broy34 Says:

“I’d like to see the bucs pick up a complementary running back to go with Jones speed”. They have one. His name’s Peyton barber. Jones barber and Sims is just fine. And they’re not going back. They may go d end or another o lineman. Possibly safety or linebacker

  9. gotbbucs Says:

If they can teach him to run routes out of the slot he’ll be a very scary weapon.

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m hoping they get Dimitri Flowers before all is said and done.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

But we really need a right tackle too.

  12. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Their play styles are polar opposite.

If they wanted their new MJD, Guice was their guy. But I guess that would’ve made too much sense. Licht has a habit of trying to outsmart himself in the 2nd.

  13. SB Says:

John Kelley out of UT please.

  14. Broy34 Says:

Bonzai – your takes are so refreshing. A big o lineman is all I want left

  15. Getaclue Says:

I think he’s a lot like Brian Westbrook

  16. Joeypoppems Says:

Yea, the only thing he has in common with MJD is weight lol. I’ve seen him comped to Jamaal Charles and Melvin Gordon throughout the process.

  17. Bucs Guy Says:

I think he looks a lot like a bust.

  18. firethecannons Says:

Maybe we could give Vita Vea a few reps at running back

  19. BucEmUp Says:

Barber is the bruiser and Jones is our Kamara back.

This guy is going to be good, I can’t believe he was ranked under Guice and chubb

  20. LongSeason Says:

    MJD 5’7″ 210 lb.
    Reggie Bush 6’0″ 205 lb.
    RJII 5’11” 205 lb.

I stand by my post. MJD is a Smurf.

  21. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

Jones reminds me of a young Jamaal Charles.

    Great pick up

  22. Thespiritof1976 Says:

Shaq Griffin, Dimitri Flowers, then Parry Nickerson.

  23. Jeffbuc Says:

Big guy what makes him look like a bust? Why does every nfl analyst like him. And think he will be electric. But you my hater think he looks like a bust. Please elaborate if your going to say something like that. Break down some reasons why? Or that’s what you haters whiny babies do just bash everything bucs. Then if he goes off you will be the first one with his jersey saying I told everyone he was going to be a beast. Go somewhere else if you want to be negative. This is a time to be excited and hope for the best with every draft pick. No one has any clue how any one drafted this whole draft will actually turn out. So if you don’t have anything to bring to the conversation except for some stupid one line no fact statement then don’t post at all.

  24. NFLNut Says:

    Players I’m interested in:

    Shaq Griffin

    Desmond Harrison

    Anthony Averett

    Holton Hill

    J.C. Jackson

    Tony Brown

    DeShone Elliott

    Kyzir White

    Josh Sweat

    Tyrell Crosby

  25. R.O. Says:

He compared his playing weight to MJD. They are far from being the comparable player… C’mon man!

  26. donuts Says:

Jones is a west coast guy along with Vea….and we dont get to see them every Saturday in FL so the guys being negative have not seen them play. Its that simple. I have watched Jones since his Freshman year and you could tell even then he was special. He makes guys look like they are standing still when he runs past. Im looking forward to see what coach Buck can do with Vea.

    Go Bucs!

  27. Sam Says:

He run like McCoy from the Bills.
