Bucs Trade Up Into Round 3 And Pick Guard Alex Cappa

April 27th, 2018

Jason Licht is on the move again!

This time the Buccaneers’ general manager was dumping his choice fourth-round pick (No. 102 overall) and a sixth-rounder (No. 180 overall) to the Vikings for their late third-rounder.

The target was Division II Humboldt St. offensive lineman Alex Cappa.

Ali Marpet Part II?

NFL Network Mike Mayock said he’s never seen more violent film than Cappa’s when it comes to an offensive linemen.

Hey, Joe’s not about to second guess Licht and offensive linemen. He’s had a strong record there, for sure.

Cappa (6-6, 305 pounds) is projected as a guard.

  6. Clw JB Says:

They have hit on every need thus far – read the write ups on MJ he might be the SS long term – very nice haul again in this draft

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

With Jenson and Cappa……we just got a lot meaner on the Oline….

Mayock loves the pick…you can tell….

  8. Dewey Selmon Says:

We had the 2nd pick tomorrow, we could of had him then. No one was going to draft him in the last 7 picks of the 3rd round.

  9. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

This offseason has been all abt the trenches.

Nabbing a RB and two CBs certainly are also nice additions.

    Lovin it.

  10. DB55 Says:

Just a quick question why not pick Jesse Bates and Isiah Oliver with the 2 late round 2nd round picks? Or Guice? What am I missing?

Alex Cappa – first reaction – he about the size of most of the guards in our division but maybe he is a mauler good luck going against Peppers and Jordan and all the falcons monsters.

It’s almost like Licht should wait until the team after him picks so he can know who to pick. WT ACTUAL F MAN?!?!?!?

  11. adam from ny Says:

    yes!!!…back to lovin’ licht again…

    licht is grabbing stud muffins!

    makin moves and drinkin’ pints!

  12. destinjohnny Says:

Jason is always going to trade up for a guy that will be there when we pick,
I think he feels like if he has extra picks he can trade up.
its like its burning a hole in his pocket.

  13. Bird Says:

Pewter report has bucs taking him in almost all their mocks

  14. Billybuc Says:

What did we give up Joe?

  15. JimmyJack Says:

DB55….Bates sounded really bad on ESPNs evaluation

  16. BlogTalkFootball Says:

I love, love, love this pick!

  17. Dave Says:

    Dewey

How about a little enthusiasm and optimism?

Instead you’re biotching like all the other pseudo fans who think they can do better.

    Whatever.

    It gets old

  18. Wesley Says:

    Who announced that pick?

  19. Kappamafia Says:

I think I’m most excited about this pic then any…..VV be very good.Rojo can ball with good blocking. If one of these corners pan out and this guards good. This draft will be an A…..woohoo

  20. adam from ny Says:

lichty licht moving and groovin” with flask in sports coat 🙂

  21. Dewey Selmon Says:

Billybuc, you don’t have to ask Joe, there are many knowledgeable fans who know whats going on. Joe isn’t some guru, he’s a hack with a website.

  22. Couch Fan Says:

You have no idea if he would of been available if we waited. Just stop with the unnecessary bashing. Ridiculous.

  23. SOEbuc Says:

TWO NEW NASTY LONG HAIRED RED HEADS ON THE O-LINE!!! NEW NASTY LONG HAIRED D-LINEMAN IN VEA!!! FIXING THE TRENCHES WITH THESE HIPPIES!!!!!!

  24. Thespiritof1976 Says:

Hopefully that parrot will be able to announce that we drafted Shaq tomorrow. It would make a great story even better.

  25. hoover923 Says:

The other popular Bucs site (name unmentionable) had this pick. It was no surprise.

  26. Bucs Guy Says:

Love Cappa, good value. Hate Jones, waste of a pick. Hope I’m wrong, but I saw him play in person and was not impressed at all. Look up his stats in USC’s biggest games (non-PAC 12). That’s all you need to know.

  27. Capt.Tim Says:

Undoubtably Jason Lichts best draft, and offseason.
This team got a lot smarter, and alot meaner.

Our defense went from being a joke- to being scary.
It will take these rookies a couple years- but we will be a very good team then.

    Excellent Work, Mr.Licht.
    Well done

  28. Lamarcus Says:

    Db55

I feel the same way about how the draft is going with Licht. Or Licht just playing safe

  29. Billybuc Says:

@ Dewey Feel free to chime in anytime! ?

  30. DB55 Says:

So no one else liked Nathan Shepard over Carlton Davis?

  31. Jeffbuc Says:

Wesley it looked like Troy Vincent. We didn’t have anyone there since we didn’t have a 3rd round pick

  32. Dewey Selmon Says:

Dave, I’m not bitching, just spewing facts man. Sometimes Light outsmarts himself.

  33. Wesley Says:

    Thanks Jeff.

  34. BucfaninCa Says:

Didn’t this guy play OT in college?

  35. DB55 Says:

Look up his stats in USC’s biggest games (non-PAC 12). That’s all you need to know.
    ————
But wait did Vita Vea play in the pac-12? I’m so confused

  36. Sneedy16 Says:

Well 6th round picks rarely makes the team and we had 2 of them. Why not trade up and get the player you want instead of waiting around? How do we know that they would still be around 7 picks later. Who thought Cleveland would take Ward instead of Chubbs?

  37. Jeffbuc Says:

Db55 you wanted to take another dt that early. I think that would be a little much. We needed a cornerback and we got a good one. These guys haven’t played a down and people are already questioning the picks. For all we know everyone one of these picks could be pro bowlers and this could go down as the greatest draft class ever. Let’s wait a year before we start second guessing and being upset that they didn’t draft the guy you wanted.

  38. R.O. Says:

Everyone needs to stop having erections for Shaq Griffin..

  39. DB55 Says:

Okay I see what I did there nvrmnd ignore that last post

  40. James Walker Says:

Lets just hope he wasn’t an agriculture major at Humboldt. =)

  41. bucsfan1988 Says:

Yup, we really need to move up & snag Shaquem Griffin in the 4th!!!!! I feel for this kid! Mark my words, HE WILL CHANGE A LOCKER ROOM & TEAM CULTURE!!

  42. Bucamania Says:

    25. RONALD JONES II, USC – RUNNING BACK

USC’s Jones had the highest overall PFF grade in the entire nation in 2017 (92.4), a mark that is also tied for the highest single-season grade posted by any back in this class over their college careers.

Jones isn’t the receiving threat that Barkley is, with just 40 targets over the past three years of play, but his carries are something special and he is, to an extent, the antithesis of Barkley’s running style, as he usually maximizes what his blockers provide for him. – Sam Monson (@PFF_Sam)

  43. BucFanInNc Says:

DB55 I like Shepherd too, but we have like 5 DT’s already. For everyone questioning the MJ Stewart pick, kid can ball. He was UNC’s shutdown cb. I liked the Oliver kid too though.

  44. DB55 Says:

    Jeff

Shepard is disgusting have you seen him play?

  45. passthebuc Says:

The game succeeds or fails in the trenches. Looks like our Hobart pick. With the interior line as nasty as it is going to be, Smith better ramp it up or the others might just start picking on him. in a good way

  46. webster Says:

Some of you are idiots. That is all.

  47. SOEbuc Says:

Just watched this guys highlights. Jason pulling an Ali 2.0 possibly. Dude is a monster. Is fast. And his hands look really good. He was playing OT in most of his film and I would believe if this dude had never given up a sack in his career. Very nice looking pick Jason and I’m very excited to see him play.

  48. THETRUTH Says:

    Jones looks good and shifty

Please name last Penn St RB that was not a bust? They always mentioned as great backs out of college.

What position does this lineman play?

  49. Rod Munch Says:

SOEbuc – He’s like a slower, shorter armed, weaker Marpet, that gave up sacks against inferior competition, unlike Marpet.

I don’t know about this pick, it’s a nice highlight reel, but his combine numbers are that of an UDFA. Hopefully the Bucs know what they’re doing here, seems like a reach to me.

  50. Rod Munch Says:

Poor Jeff Garcia, if he had shown up he’d have gotten to go out on TV…

  51. SOEbuc Says:

    @Rod Munch

He is kinda short armed and it’s hard as hell to be stronger than Ali, who I’m wondering what would look like in rock-lifting country. I think Licht is a great drafter and scout so if he traded up into the third for a DII player I’ma have faith in him. I’m also down to take an o-lineman in the fourth.

    5. S
    6. DT
    7. QB (would love if we could have Quenton Flowers for both a backup QB and RB).

  52. Jason Mclaurin Says:

I know for damn sure Licht got this one right. I’m glad we drafted him. I liked all the small school guys just hate we missed out on the DT from Sam Houston St. I think at this point Unrein will get cut after preseason if we land another DT in this draft. Another edge rusher would be money to go with Spence off the bench at end. I’m loving this Cappa pick though. We finally got that Right Guard now. Love the rebuilt offensive line more than the Dline though. Our offensive line unit is now D. Smith, A. Marpet, R. Jensen, Cappa( give it to him trust me) and maybe we get a RT tommorow as well and allow Dotson to get healthy and become more of a swing lineman.

  53. Doctor Stroud Says:

I like the pick because it provides depth in the trenches, but Licht loves to bring in enigmatic, mysterious guards. Like Sweezy, the Roswell aliens, and the Skunk Ape, we know very little about this kid. Why does Licht feel the need to trade up to get players that will be available later in the draft? I doubt many war rooms around the league are clamoring to trade up to sign someone from a D-II school.

  54. MTM Says:

Licht sucks at moving up to get players that would still be on the board. Players in D2 really. I’m good with the early picks but this is just stupid.

  55. Dirty Bucs Says:

    Guys,

It gets really old seeing some of you question the picks and talent evaluations the Bucs are making. I’m guessing none of you have the experience in scouting and talent evaluation that Licht and the staff of the Bucs have. It’s for damn sure none of you have the resources and information available on each draft prospect that the Bucs have. When you say “But we could have had xxx instead of so and so. Licht blew it again” etc., you look silly. You’re in no position to make a better evaluation of the talent than the people who have done this all of their lives, have every connection in the league, and who do this professionally as a living.

Be a fan. Cheer. Encourage. Be optimistic. ENJOY the FAN EXPERIENCE! Some of you are just miserable. We all want the Bucs to win.

    GO BUCS!

  56. Ugh Says:

FIRST OF ALL: Love the CAPPA PICK I think he will instantly fill a hole in our line
BUT you can’t tell me he wouldn’t have been around for pick 102 – just 8 picks later. Yeah, Yeah, we only gave up a 6th round pick to move up but I contend a pick is pick is a pick.

Hmm.. Chidi Ahanotu was a 6th rounder – oh and by the way – Tom Brady was a 6th round draft pick too.
