Saints star talks Brent Grimes

Not all cornerbacks are created equal.

Bucs fans know that too well. Their best corner, Brent Grimes, is much better than any of the others on the roster.

Cruising around Pro Bowl practices two weeks ago, Joe caught up with Saints superstar receiver Michael Thomas to talk about Grimes.

Thomas is routinely ignored when the topic of great receivers comes up, but he has more catches (197) in his first two NFL seasons than anyone in history. Dude has been crazy consistent. No surprise he won the “hands” competition against his fellow Pro Bowlers.

At first, Thomas was only interested in talking about the Saints, but he changed his tune when Joe brought up Grimes.

“He’s one of those guys you study and you appreciate that he takes his craft so seriously,” Thomas said of Grimes. “He can make the plays but you can tell how smart a player he is, too. Dangerous player.”

Joe asked Thomas if he considered Grimes a top-10 corner in the NFL.

Thomas punted on that but gave Grimes his due. “There are a handful of guys I enjoy the challenge of playing against. I want to play against the best and beat the best. I’ll say he’s in that group.”

The free agency dinner bell will ring in 37 short days for Grimes and the other unrestricted free agents across the league.

We need to re sign Grimes if he comes back and more importantly, we need to go full throttle to sign Malcolm Butler! That should be the 1st priority on the 1st day of free agency. He played in 98% of his team’s plays this past season. He would provide that culture of winning this team sorely misses. Not to mention, filling a position of great need. It would also send the right message to all the frustrated Buc fans that the team is totally committed to bring us a winner!

Malcolm butler…ej gaines…..let grimes walk….its time to replace this band aid….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  3. Bird Says:

Crazy if you think the bucs don’t need grimes. He did a solid job against qbs who have 5-10 seconds to throw the ball cause we can’t sniff a qb’s crotch.

8-10 mil range is what it will take. Seems high but otherwise we have what ?
Ryan smith , Hargreaves. (John ) McClain. Que terrible.

  4. darin Says:

DE, DT, and another DE. Maybe another. No secondary can do much without any semblance of a pass rush. Gota resign grimes but cmon throw the money at the dlinemen!! Look at last nights game. 1 sack and a whole lot of yards and points. Cant cover em forever. Cant cover them if you dont know where they are either. Great coaching job by pederson. Cmon licht get linemen and lots of them, both lines.

  5. 813bucboi Says:

Malcolm butler just played at 3.9mil…..you think he’ll turn down 8-10million per year?…..that’s too much money for a 35year old cb that had some injury issues this year…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  6. SOEbuc Says:

Miko straight up put it out there that “they will not be back in Tampa next year.” So…

    1. They will have to pay the 35-year old way more than he’s worth and they won’t do it.
    2. He’s going to a better team for less money.
    3. He’ll retire.

Three ways this would work out nicely without Brent. All involve getting a decent CB in FA, also.

    1. Possibly picking up Minkah Fitzpatrick at #7 to play CB.

    2. Trade back with Buffalo and try to get CB Joshua Jackson at #21.

    3. Try to get Mike Hughes in Round 2.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs have to resign Grimes – I’d hope they get it done if he is going to continue playing. Then the Bucs need to get another guy, say Talib in a trade for like a 4th or 5th rounder. After that the Bucs can then hope VH3 bounces back and finally you draft a another young guy to develop. Grimes and Talib both should be 2 year deals, and for a team with the offensive talent the Bucs have, they shouldn’t be doing rebuilds, they should make sure of the time they have until Winston gets his $25-30m/year.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

On a side note, and not to hijack the thread, but I was looking for what musical tie-ins the NFL can do with Tampa with the 2021 Super Bowl and I think they need to go all in on Slim Whitman. They should do a recreation at half-time of the scene from Mars Attack where his song is used to save the world by causing the aliens heads to explode. That would be awesome and I’d absolutely for once watch the halftime show.

The other options would be Brooke Hogan and Aaron Carter… so that is some “slim” pickings. Get it?! Slim Whitman, slim pickings? Man am I good.

  9. Lamarcus Says:

Here a guy that I won’t mind moving on from. We need a shut down corner who man’s up. Like every successful team has.

Grimes makes a beautiful play then the next play 100 percent of the time he will get burned. Enough already.

I still believe we need to go WR in the first. So if we can’t get Ramsey we trade down and pick Keyshawn’s nephew Michael Thomas WR OSU. I think he and Tyler Boyd have the best hands of the WR group.

Crazy I know but then again I’m the same guy who wanted to draft Aaron Donald and Allen Robinson in 2014

  11. martinii Says:

Someone above referred to Grimes as a Bandaid, and yes I like many would like to have great players in key positions for a long period of time, The reality is that just don’t happen all that much. Anyone who watched those two teams last night had to know that with few exceptions a lot of those players were Bandaids. It goes with the turf. And you gotta admits that was a dam good game.

  12. Maze Says:

Brent Grimes and Trumaine Johnson. Yes please

  13. JAB83 Says:

The D needs to be cleaned up… I can see them getting rid of the Grimes….

Be careful however cause you gotta replace him and your still no better off at that point

  14. BigAlbinoDonky Says:

We have too many holes to fill in one offseason. Keep Grimes around another year so that CB isn’t QUITE as much of a need this year. He’s still a really strong zone corner…which isn’t much good when your lack of pass rush allows receivers to find and run through whatever zone they want. But he’s still by far the best on the roster.

  15. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Both Talib and Butler are supposed to be “shutdown” corners. Brent is not that far off he’s getting the short shrift her.

Minkah is great but doubt he’ll be available at 7 and I sure do not wish to trade up for ANYBODY this year but especially a DB.

We could re-sign Grimes…sign both Talib and Butler and draft Minkah and we’d still have a sorry pass defense UNLESS we fix our pass rush. Virtually any NFL QB will carve up any secondary when they have five seconds per snap. We wonder why all those “backup” QB’s were able to beat us…they had time to go through ALL of their progressions…deadly in the NFL.

Soooo re-sign Grimes…sign either Butler or Talib and draft DE’s….over and over again! Given that DL’s do not usually standout their first year we better hope Noah’s shoulder is perfectly healthy or we’re hosed.

    @SOEBuc

“Miko straight up put it out there that “they will not be back in Tampa next year.” So…’

Where did you get that. If you read JBF dated January 10th of this year…perhaps she’s had a change of heart. Here is what Joe reported last month.

    Miko had plenty to say.

As to the future of Brent Grimes with the Buccaneers, Miko said “there’s absolutely a chance” Brent plays next season but she’s uncertain whether that’s in Tampa. At this time last year, Brent was done with the NFL, Miko said, before the Buccaneers convinced him to finish his two-year contract and return.

“He said he retired last year. The last game [of the 2016 season] against Carolina, he literally said it in the parking lot to me and Coach Smith,” Miko said of Brent. “And yeah, Coach Smith was like, ‘Miko, no, we can’t. This can’t happen.’”

Obviously, Grimes came back to play in 2017. Miko said she was upset because when Grimes agreed to return for the season the team wouldn’t guarantee his 2017 salary. “I didn’t like that. I didn’t appreciate it,” Miko said.

But Brent played regardless and was good with it, she said. “He thinks like a team guy. You know, he’s all about the team. I’m about money.”

When Miko says she’s about money what she really means is she’s all about
R E S P E C T. She’s tired of watching Brent play for less money than DB’s not as good as him have earned. She has a point. If we pay him market value IMHO Brent is still in play. Remember he was going to retire before last year. He likes his teammates and Smitty.

  17. BucEmUo Says:

Please Licht please make sure Grimes stays and try to get another top corner over here so that you can finally see it’s the dc and not the players. Just to be sure find a couple of pass rushers as well.

  18. tmaxcon Says:

why wold grimes want to come back to a losing franchise with no hope. he can pick and choose his destination. mr grimes I am sure you will be in the playoffs next season while the bucs wallow in the basement for yet another year. there truly is no hope anyone who thinks otherwise needs to take a look at the previous 16 years without a meaningful win. no sane person believes the bucs will turn it around when they have proven for more than a DECADE that they simply do not understand football at this level nor have a desire to field a winner. bucs are destined for failure again in 2018. 4-12 at best

  23. Defense Rules Says:

@tmaxcon … “reality sucks sir wake up… there is no god but thanks for the well wishes.” TMAX, that explains more than you’ll ever know.

BTW, old saying: ‘If you live like there is no God, you’d better be right’. Of course, on the other hand, you’d have absolutely nothing to gain by being right, would you. Good luck with that as your life’s philosophy though.

  24. Defense Rules Says:

StPete, you nailed it … it’s about RESPECT. And yes, Brent really likes Smitty & especially these young corners. And they certainly look up to him, as they should. If he’s really through with football, then he’ll retire & money most likely won’t change that. But Brent’s still in great shape & has played at a high level these past 2 years (despite very little help from our DLine). But if he still has that same love for football, Licht could very well re-sign him IF he shows him the RESPECT that he’s earned. Get it done Jason.

There are several FA CBs who could help the Bucs this year (Butler being high on that list). Talib is still under contract with the Broncos remember & I wouldn’t trade for him. But if the Broncos release him, then heck ya, take a shot. In any event, Bucs need to pick up TWO FA outside CBs, and maybe even draft one IF it all falls into place at the right point & time.

  25. SB Says:

Joe……….Why do you keep Tmax around? He provides nothing but hatred here and you have banned me so many times for One mess up as I kept coming back under different names and IP’s. I mean this guy provides Nothing to this site. Well……….He is entertaining as the town idiot. NVM carry on Sirs.

  27. SOEbuc Says:

    StPete

I guess I was mistaking about Miko but even if she didn’t say that, I don’t think she would be down for what I’m willing to give him. But when a pro sports players wife says “it’s all about the money what she really means is it’s all about the RESPECT.” That’s f*cking hilarious. If it was all about the respect, she would probably do the more noble thing and say it’s all about the respect and not the money. But at least she can be honest and say it’s all about money and doesn’t try to say “this is a business” like every other pro sports player when they really mean it’s all about the money.

I do want to resign Brent but for only the right price. One-year $1.5 to $1.75 million. If he were a couple years younger and didn’t have any injuries last year I would definitely give him more dough. If Miko’s down for that, so am I.

I take your point for sure but whenever Miko talks about money she almost always brings up what other CB’s earn…and she compares them to Brent and she feels ripped off.

Truth is they are multimillionaires many times over…the literally do not need the money. But if you read her quote it really got her peoed last year when Brent decided not to retire and the Bucs didn’t even guarantee his contract. I do not blame her. There will be NO re-signing without a guaranteed contract this time around. We have a ton of money for next year. I get we need to prepare for the guys who will be earning pretty soon…but a one year deal won’t hurt us.

  30. Debilah Says:

I have just about had enough of the haters talking about B. Grimes (son), especially the ones that don’t have a clue about what is going on. I am a bit confused with the we should and shouldn’t give him this amount of money. I know for a fact that not one NFL owner or coach would be on here discussing what they will or will not give a player. If you don’t care for my son, keep his name out of your mouth. Brent isn’t on social media because of all the mess on here, but I have plenty of time. 🤷‍♀️

  33. Pickgrin Says:

Try not to mind the trolls here Deb.

Everybody with eyes can see that Brent is still playing at a high level and deserves a nice offer if he chooses to come back.

The Bucs can REALLY use Brent’s talents for another year or 2 – and to a man, everyone on the team appreciates and greatly respects what he brings to the table – both on the field and also in the locker room. Hopefully Mr Grimes will be willing to continue helping our young CBs come of age in the NFL. A roll he obviously enjoyed last year based on a couple of his comments.

With Winston at QB and all the receiving talent this team has – as well as a # of very good players on defense – wouldn’t it be cool if Brent’s final year(s) in this league were spent helping shake this franchise of its losing culture and being a positive force towards building a strong defense that all Buccaneers fans cane be proud of? Hell – maybe he can even get a ring if father time can be staved off for a couple more years….

  34. godzilla13 Says:

Brent Grimes can still play. Two years ago at age 33, Grimes finished 2016 with the highest overall grade of his career at 90.2, which was fourth highest among all cornerbacks per PFF. In 2017, Grimes compiled 49 tackles (44 solo) — including two for loss — three interceptions, one fumble recovery and 11 passes defensed over 13 games. To give you an indicator of what life could be like if Grimes does not re-sign with the Bucs “In the first game the Bucs played without Grimes over the past two years, the Vikings Case Keenum picked the Bucs apart, completing 25 of 33 passes 369 yards and three touchdowns against no interceptions.

Will he retire or sign with another team? Grimes said “The key in football is people wanting to play together. That’s a big part, and I feel like we’ve got that part.”I like everybody here. They treat me well,” ” I’ve been talking to them and they’ve made it clear they really do want me back. That’s a good thing to hear.”

This team has an opportunity to be the team we all envisioned to be before the last season started. The only way that can happen is if the GM re-signs the players which their contracts are up, who are the ones who can make this team great. Brent Grimes is one of them. Then go out a fix the four “holes’ that need to be filled and this team can reach the play-offs.
