Guice On The Loose

February 26th, 2018

Intriguing.

The more Joe reads about this guy, the more Joe likes.

Some day Joe is going to have to ask Kwon Alexander what is in the water in Baton Rouge. For some reason, it seems players from LSU get better in the NFL (as opposed to Alabama players; so many Nick Saban studs over the years have rarely lived up to the hype, especially on defense).

That’s what intrigues Joe about this Derrius Guice, running back from LSU. The Bayou Bengals barely missed Leonard Fournette because they had Guice.

Joe was researching Guice last night and came across the following from Lance Zierlein of NFL.com that had Joe’s mouth watering.

Winning combination of speed, power and balance. Good recognition of early trouble from penetration and makes alterations. Has quality vision and is able to make sudden cuts without rolling into low gear.

Even when the Bucs had a healthy, motivated Doug Martin, he didn’t have breakaway speed. And the past two years, dude had no vision at all.

Yeah, Joe understands a lot of Bucs fans are hot in the pants for Sony Michel and Joe would have no issue whatsoever if the Bucs drafted Michel. Just looking at Guice’s numbers, his traits and how it seems LSU players actually improve as pros, this guy Guice has Joe’s attention.

I LOVE DERRIUS … KID COULD LEAS THE NFL IN RUSHING AS A ROOKIE!

  2. NFLNut Says:

    LEAD not “leas”, LOL

  3. Guzzie Says:

No way Licht drafts a quality RB, Klueless Dork won’t play rookie RBs anyways, the Bucs aren’t allowed to have nice things, probably draft some scrub in the 6th or UDFA, no faith in this GM, ever since this moron drafted the kicker it’s been downhill

  4. Guzzie Says:

Can’t wait to see Guice get drafted by the Panthers and run all over us

  5. Joeypoppems Says:

Best RB in this class. He is also my favorite player in this draft.

With that said, Bucs still shouldnt be looking for a RB in round 1. If he slides to the 2nd for some reason then its an easy pick.

  6. TDTB Says:

Great back, but his history of injuries makes Michel a better selection.

  7. Guzzie Says:

Michel fumbles a lot, Guice had injuries, Barkley isn’t a good inside runner, R Jones is too small, Penny faced weak competition, no back is perfect but all 5 are huge upgrades from what we have, pairing any of these guys with Peyton would make our offense lethal

  8. BigHogHaynes Says:

Martin had no vision (what a cop out) and the o-line couldn’t block a blind dummy! What a hell’va combination!! CONTINUE TO BUILD A WALL ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BAY!!

  9. feelthepewterpower Says:

To Guzzie above, Barkley is a complete running back and yes he can do it all (including inside running). See the analysis vid link below. Oh, and to pigeonhole Koetter into not being a rookie rb coach is asinine considering he hasnt had influence in roster moves until 2016.

  10. feelthepewterpower Says:

The only issue with Barkley is availabilty as the odds dictate hell be taken top five. I dont think the Buccs trade up for him but it wouldn’t surprise me if they feel as many that he is a franchise rb

  11. Jonzey17 Says:

We need to trade with BUf and move down and give them our 7th pick for they 21st and 22nd pick. 21. Derwin James(S), 22. Da’Ron Payne(DT), 38. Arden Key(DE), 69. Rashaad Penny(RB), 104. Desmond Harrison(OT)

  12. Defense Rules Says:

@Guzzie … “the Bucs aren’t allowed to have nice things.” Guzzie, that’s undoubtedly the best line I’ve seen on JBF … ever. It so perfectly captures our Bucs.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

    Round 1 – DEFENSE.
Round 2 – Best RB available (Guice or Michel would do just fine).
Round 3-7 … Priority to DEFENSE (DE/DT/CB/SS) but grabbing an OLineman with great promise someplace in there would be excellent.

Fix OLine & Secondary in FA as much as possible.

  14. Dooshlarue Says:

    @Defense

I agree 100% with your draft order.
Makes perfect sense and I think Licht will probably do it.

  15. Lunchbox Says:

Guice is actually my second favorite RB in this class after Barkley, followed closely by Michel, just as far as his skills on the field. But if you know anything about his story, he seems real hungry to show how much he belongs at the next level, and he seems to run “angry” but with great balance. If they took him in the 2nd, I’d be cool with that. However-if we waited till later in the draft, check out these guys:
    Ito smith southern miss
    Mark Walton Miami
    Travon McMillan v tech
    Phillip Lindsay Colorado
Smith has many of the same qualities as Guice, and could probably be had with a 4th rounder. There are several good RB’s in this draft, so even though if love to see Guice on our team, if we waited, there are other viable alternatives.

  16. K_Bassuka Says:

Kerryon Johnson it’s the one we should draft.

  17. Guzzie Says:

If Buffalo gives up those 2 picks it’ll be for a top 5 pick, Arizona giving us their 2nd to move up to 7 for Baker or Josh Allen would be a more likely scenario

  18. Guzzie Says:

    1st Quenton Nelson
    2nd Arden Key
    3rd Rashaad Penny

  19. Capt.Tim Says:

    LSU Baby

    Arden Key
    guice
    CB Jacks

  20. JabooBuc Says:

Joe, I don’t think you want this kid. Mixed up with all kinds of things while at LSU. Type of kid that will have a hard time staying available to play if you know what I mean.

  21. Jeremy Says:

Dude just stop already. We need to use the first 4 picks on defense

  22. Bculaw Says:

@Guzzie – you realize Michel only had 1 fumble in each of his Sophomore, Junior & Senior seasons, and only 5 in his career with over 650 touches. I don’t think I’d call that “a lot.”

  23. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Guice is going to end up being a 1st round draft pick after the combine because ppl are going to be low key and he will explode as people go back and watch his tape from 2016 when he played in place of Fournette………bucs trade with bills get their 2 #1s and they could go DL and RB and grab guice……guice right up there with barkley….guice took year off like fournette did for the NFL after playing on a crappy LSU team last year

  24. Jonzey17 Says:

Guice and Michel will be gone in the 2nd and we don’t need to get a OL in the first. If Chubb is gone we need a either James or Fitzpatrick in the first, if those runningbacks are gone in the 2nd get a DE, 3rd if Penny is there get him he is the sleeper of the draft.

  25. Wausa Says:

I could see multiple LSU, Alabama or Florida State players drafted by the Bucs this year.
Guice would be an outstanding 2nd round pick for the Bucs, but the Bucs have the worst DLine in the NFL and I’m afraid the Bucs are going to have to draft at least three if not four defensive linemen this year.

  26. Duke Says:

Picking Guice would improve the defensive line day 1. He will have more impact on the defense than anyone who is a defensive player. It is a win for all 3 units.

  27. 813bucboi Says:

been saying guice for a while now…..

draft guice early(2nd round)….then draft bo scarbrough in the 5th or 6th round….

plenty of good backs coming out:

    sony Michel
    Ronald jones
    kamryn pettway
    kerryon Johnson

    and a few others…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  28. Not there yet Says:

He’ll be gone in the first round. Actual good teams with late round picks who don’t have all the deficiencies we have can afford to draft a back in late first round

  29. Pepsi Says:

Geeze Joe’s.. I know you guys read the comments but do you ever seriously listen to any of them? this is why most of us have been saying Dikemper needs to slow down about drafting Barkley being the best thing… Guice, Michel, Chubb, Jones.. theyve all been around for a while here. And Dikemper was going Barkley crazy even back when Damien Harris was still part of the mix. 2018 RB class is one of the best ever.. let that sink in now.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Bucs signed RB Dalton Crossan! Our RB issues are solved!!!!!!!
    (not)

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Count me as being on the ‘wall’ side of things. Focus the draft on fixing the walls.

Get RBs in free agency. Heck, sign a bunch of them. Get rid of Barber, Rodgers and Sims. Bring in 4 new guys in free agency. They cannot do any worse, and it will buy us a year to draft one.

  32. Pa Privateer Says:

I would love to get Guice or Hubbard in the 2nd. I am not sure either will be there.

  33. Duke Says:

    Bonzai,

If Dalton is the answer, it must be the wrong question.

The draft this year is heavy w RB’s and practically anorexic along the lines.
I don’t know how smart it is to look at the draft and think strictly o and d line.
I do know that it’s pretty freaking stupid. And understandably that’s why it’s so appealing.

  34. Bucsfanman Says:

“Martin had no vision (what a cop out) and the o-line couldn’t block a blind dummy”

We keep glossing over this FACT. If we don’t first address the o-line, it won’t make a difference who’s behind them toting the rock. That, and play-calling. Oh, but wait, it was ALL Doug Martin. Buc fans! SMH!
And please don’t roll out Barber’s stats. Yes he was more productive. He was more productive behind back-up o-linemen. You cannot deny how many times defenders were in the backfield. It’s fact.
And yes, Barber should’ve gotten the ball more. It still doesn’t cover up the fact that the o-line was not productive, as admitted by an o-lineman himself incidentally!

  35. Bucsfanman Says:

We can’t afford to “reach” for players in this draft. If Guice falls to us and it makes sense, pull the trigger.

  36. Pickgrin Says:

If Guice makes it to our 2nd rd pick – ABSOLUTELY!

Need to get the best DL or OL player(s) we can get our hands on in the 1st rd though…

Chubb or Nelson if we stay at 7. Some combo of Da’Ron Payne, Marcus Davenport, Arden Key etc if we trade down w/ Buffalo.

  37. LakeLand Says:

    1.DE/CB
    2.CB/OL
    3.RB/DT
    4.DE/CB
    5.S/OL
    6.DT/S
    6.OL/S
    7.CB/OL

  38. LakeLand Says:

But, it all boils down to what the Bucs do in free agency

  39. Pa Privateer Says:

I retract my comment from above.

I would rather address a finding a RB, CB and OC in FA.

Then go 1st round Vea, and 2nd round Hubbard.

  40. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Off Topic a bit, but has anyone ever noticed that when coaches and general managers come to Tampa, they start making faces ?
First Gruden, and now Jason Licht.
Koetter seems immune to making faces, so far.

  41. grafikdetail Says:

heard he has injury issues… but still would be a quality back if he can stay healthy

  42. PewterPower93 Says:

The guy is a good prospect and would almost certainly provide a spark to the offense, but he will come off the board relatively early and early on we need to focus more on offensive line, defensive line and defensive backs. Running back is a luxury this team just can’t afford.

  43. SOEbuc Says:

    @Guzzie

“No way Licht drafts a quality RB, Klueless Dork won’t play rookie RBs anyways, the Bucs aren’t allowed to have nice things, probably draft some scrub in the 6th or UDFA, no faith in this GM, ever since this moron drafted the kicker it’s been downhill”

Yeah that draft was god awful last year with OJ Howard, Justin Evans, Chris Godwin, and Kendell Beckwith. We have been going down hill non stop.

And those UDFA like Hump and Brate, Licht is such a d#ck.

  44. SOEbuc Says:

What round Joe? Maybe the fourth? Sure as hell not the early second like Bucs fans think they will pick up Michel. I would like to see the Bucs make a trade for a good RB and either draft Nelson or get a top notch OG FA like Andrew Norwell.

  45. EverBuc Says:

There is absolutely no way that you can watch career highlights of Guice and think he is better than Michel. Michel has better balance, hands, speed, and nose for the endzone. Barkley and Michel are leagues above the rest. If Michel had been the featured back at UGA, it would be a toss up.
