Galling Statistic

February 1st, 2018

Charmed life.

Joe read the following and just wanted to clean off his desk in rage — in one swipe.

In the latest from Football Outsiders, they take a baseball bat to some of the worst starters in the NFL this past year. Not surprisingly, a few Bucs were mentioned (including Doug Martin, who Football Outsiders just raked over the coals).

But Martin was not the lone Bucs player to feel the heat. The article totally skinned the Bucs defensive ends for rank inability to get quarterbacks on the ground, and then they threw out this stat that had Joe fastballing a just-finished beer can at a waste basket.

How grotesque were Bucs defensive ends in 2017? Football Outsiders claims 27 players had more sacks than Bucs defensive ends combined!

Joe’s a little over the top here; but if the vast majority of us failed at our jobs this badly, we’d be out on the sidewalk panhandling, yet Bucs defensive assistants — who make a helluva lot more than most Americans — get a complete and total pass? It’s if someone had the stone balls to look Team Glazer straight in the eye and say, “Nah, we’re all good here.”

Must be nice to be tight with the right people.

Brian Billick sure has a twisted definition of “great.”

Frank Reich Bucs 2019 head coach

  2. Guzzie Says:

Joe is it too early to scout potential 2019 head coaches?

  3. Rod Munch Says:

For those who say my Ryan Smith hatred was out of place, that he’s not nearly as bad as I’ve said, here’s what they have to say….

“Smith finished 80th out of 81 qualifying cornerbacks (subscription required) in both success rate and yards per pass, being targeted over and over by some of the league’s most dangerous offenses.”

The only question I have is who in the world could possibly be worse? Seriously, I don’t know how that’s possible – Ryan Smith is the worst corner I’ve ever seen in my life. Ever. So who is 81 if Smith is only #80? If anyone has a subscription, let me know.

Oh and my other kicking bag, Chris Conte, is awful enough to be called out by name. That combo of Conte and Smith has to be the worst combo in the NFL for certain, there is no way possible there is a duo worse than them two.

  4. Capt.Tim Says:

    Guzzie,
    Nope.
I dont know why the Glazers are wasting a year. They should be interviewing GMs and head Coaches right now.
Going in to this season with Doug Martin as our RB, And Ayers/Gholsten as our DEs- should be an immediate dismissal.
Its just a pitful excuse at Talent assessment. Heads should roll.

Then he Glazers should rent several billboards around Tampa- and Post a public Apology to Gerald McCoy- apologizing for wasting so many years of his Career.
Then Trade him to a Contender- where he is likely to win a Ring.
They shouldnt even have the nerve to ask for anything in return. They dont deserve it. Just give him to the Patriots, after apologizing to McCoy, again and again for the injustice done here.

Then Fire everyone. Rebuild One Buc from the Janitors up.
    That would be a good.
They must know they will have to fire these guys. Just do it!

Really? All that BS over a ROOKIE?
Kid never played his first year. Our clueless coaches trying to turn him into a safety.
So hes a Rookie this year.
    Opposite all pro Bret Grimes.
On a Team with absolutely no Defensive ends. Worst in the league at rushing the Passer.
WORST IN THE LEAGUE AT RUSHING THE QB!!!

And you think the Rookie CB is the Problem?
    Smh.
Guess you didnt see teams stomping a mudhole In Vernon Hegreaves butt, til he opted out.
Rookie was his backup- and still looked better than VH3.
Nobody in Secondary is gonna look good, with our DEs.
And if you are gonna throw- they are gonba pick a rookie over Grimes.

Think you might wanga look a lil harder at the P.O.S. Defense, than just banging on a Rookie. The real problems stick out like a sore thumb.
    The rook will be fine

It’s NOT too early to talk about the Bucs 2019 head coach … I’m hoping it will be Koetter after he has a great year this season, however, honestly, if I had to bet my home on the Bucs 2018 record, I’d probably say it will be 7-9 … that could change after free agency and the draft but that’s what I’m thinking right now, and if that happens, even if Jameis goes nuts and throws for 5k with 40 TDs I think Koetter will be fired.

So … here are some options, NOT in any particular order:

    1. JIM SCHWARTZ
    2. JACK DEL RIO
    3. TERYL AUSTIN
    4. JIM HARBAUGH
    5. DAVID SHAW
    6. KIRK FERENTZ
    7. BILL O’BRIEN
    8. TODD HALEY
    9. TODD WASH
    10. MATT LAFLEUR
    11. KEN WHISENHUNT
    12. GUS BRADLEY
    13. ERIC BIENIEMY
    14. FRANK REICH
    15. JIM BOB COOTER
    16. MARQUAND MANUEL

Bucs defense 2016 – 38 sacks, ranked tied for 9th place
Bucs defense 2017 – 22 sacks, ranked 32nd dead last

What changed? Lost Akeem Spence and Alterraun Verner. Noah Spence to IR.

    Lavonte David 2016 5 sacks, 2017 0 sacks
    Kwon Alexander 2016 3 sacks, 2017 0 sacks
    William Gholston 2016 3 sacks, 2017 0 sacks
    Robert Ayers 2016 6.5 sacks, 2017 2 sacks
    Jude Adjei-Barimah 2016 2 sacks, 2017 0 sacks
    Noah Spence 2016 5.5 sacks, 2017 1 sack
    Sealver Siliga 2016 1 sacks, 2017 0 sacks
    Gerold McCoy 2016 7 sacks, 2017 6 sacks
    Clinton McDonald 2016 3.5 sacks, 2017 5 sacks
    Akeem Spence 2016 .05 sacks, 2017 0 sacks
    Ryan Russell 2016 1 sack, 2017 2 sacks

In 2017 the Bucs had 4 starters on defense, Alexander, David and Gholston produced 0 sacks and in 2016 produced 11 sacks. Robert Ayers only produced 2 sacks in 2017, minus 4.5 sacks from 2016. Noah Spence 1 sack, minus 4.5 sacks from 2016. The Buccaneer defense is almost identical in players from 2016 to 2017. They need to get sack production from Ayers, Spence, Alexander, David and Gholston. More blitzing packages. With a few key player additions the defense can return to their 2016 sack total. Ryan Smith – Aquib Talib. Chris Baker – Travis Bryan. Chris Conte – Derwin James. Draft a DE round three. Add four players. That is all it will take.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

@godzilla13 … “What changed? Lost Akeem Spence and Alterraun Verner. Noah Spence to IR.” That’s a great question: ‘What changed’? The 4 DTs got about the same # of sacks (2016:12 sacks vs 2017:11.5 sacks) but the DEs & LBs position groups BOTH got significantly less it looks like. The DEs I can understand (very limited talent) but the LBs still have me bewildered. I think I remember reading that we blitzed about the same both years, but just didn’t get there. If that’s true, swapping out Akeem Spence for Baker may be more of a factor than anything else. Plus more injuries probably. Only thing that REALLY matters though is that Bucs need to improve the TALENT on the DLine quickly or 2018 will be a replay of 2017.

  9. BucEmUp Says:

Let’s see here hmmmm…..for over a decade Jay Hayes was one of the best dline coaches in the league in Cincy, he actually has results. So you sign him and all of a sudden the pass rush it worse than ever over the past two seasons. Maybe it’s the scheme, maybe it’s the dc. Maybe nobody can sack the qb when there is a wide open filed of green with dba playing 12 to 30 yards deep EVERY FROEKING PLAY!!!!!!! EVERY ONE!!!!!!

Some people in this organization need to be slapped around real good this is common sense

  10. Bird Says:

    Rod “butt” much

No the hatred is just at you.

You are the next Dos Equis guy? The most interesting man in the world. Keep posted bruh. You are so smart.

This is not something we needed Football Outsiders to tell us. We already knew this. Joe, why rub salt in an open wound?

the only CB smitty puts in position to be successful is grimes….grimes has been playing soft/off coverage every sense he came into the league…..

ryan smith and VHG are man press CB’s…..if smitty played to their strengths, they’ll have better results…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  17. James Walker Says:

I guess the assistant coaches had Johnny Cochran as an agent.

  18. Baz Says:

Do some research on Jeremy Bates as our Bucs next HC in 2019. He’s now the OC with the Jets, but all signs point to him being another young fast-rising OC in the mold of Sean McVay and Shanahan.
I think he’d do well with Jameis, and I’d love him, although I’d like to see who his DC would be, etc.

  19. StPeteBucsFan Says:

If Noah Spence had played the entire year there is every chance that he would have been pretty high up on that list of 27 getting more sacks than his teammates combined.

We all seem to forget the rave reviews Noah was getting from Jax Jag players…guys who see a strong defense everyday…during his Jax practices.
It would not have been extraordinary if Noah had gotten his first ten sack season.

We need Noah HEALTHY this year…we need to score in the draft or FA. It’s as simple as that. Odd in the draft are 50-50 but we’ve already had our 50% of losers…Gaines Adams…Adrian Slowborn…Daquan Bowers….Licht has done prtty well in the draft if failing at FA..hopefully we’ll get a couple of DL out of this draft. And perhaps Licht can find an UDFA DL the quality of Brate at TE.

  20. LakeLand Says:

Michael Strahan had more sacks that the ENTIRE TEAM.

    Tampa Bay Bucs Sacks Total
    2017, 22.0 Sacks

    Michael Strahan Sacks Total
    2001, 22.5

    Pure Pathetic

  21. OAR Says:

    Michael Strahan knows about gaps!

  22. Mike Johnson Says:

I like Both Del Rio and Schwartz for 2019. Harbaugh would not be bad either.
Get an Exec VP in here who knows Football and what it takes to field a winning team. That is..IF..we want to be winners. If Koetter and his road dog Smitty finish less than 8-8? They are joinin Lovie and Schiano at the fishin Hole!
