The sales pitch has been delivered personally.

There was no duck or dodge today from head coach Dirk Koetter today, and there wasn’t much from Brent Grimes either.

Your Buccaneers head coach wants cornerback Brent Grimes to return — at age 35.

Koetter told local media that he cornered Grimes today to express his desire for a 2018 reunion.

Grimes is an unrestricted free agent starting in March. The veteran, who the Bucs desperately need to return, said today that he feels good, likes Tampa and Bucs coaches, and he feels good about playing football next year.

Show him the money, Jason Licht! Get it done!

  1. The Buc Realist Says:

    Pay da man!!!!!!!!!

Another good sign is that BG24 now has his best reason to stay!!!!! And that is Coach Smitty will be here next year too!!!!!!!

Now go get a “real” DE and go win some games!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Rod Munch Says:

    Well duh.

  3. Buc believer Says:

I sat next to Miko at an away game so I have it on good authority dude isn’t coming back to this loser team. And that is not hyperbole.

  4. Dewey Selmon Says:

He can get money anywhere in the NFL, he is going to go chase a ring. He won’t be back.

  5. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Grimes won’t, and shouldn’t stay. And we should not resign him. Banking on a 35 year old corner who steadily declined throughout the season is a bad Idea.

Instead, we should cut the fat off this roster (Baker, Martin, Evan Smith, Gholston), and choose not to resign Brent, and with that money, and the cap space we already have, should pursue Ziggy Ansah, Demarcus Lawrence, and Trumaine Johnson.

    But we won’t.

  6. Lamarcus Says:

Peace out Grimes. Here’s another overrated vet that happens to be a Mike smith dodo player we can do better than Grimes.

  7. Bird Says:

8 mil should get it done.

  8. Architek Says:

See the Pats and GB and other contending teams. No offense to Grimes (who’s a outstanding cover corner) but to pay big money to a 35 year old under sized CB just highlights how far we are away from the contenders in personnel.

Everything we do is always due to crisis in the big picture!

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Offer him 2 years with his option on year 2…….that may get it done.

  11. Bird Says:

    Lamarcus is right.

    Gmc and grimes are garbage.

    Jameis-HOF

  12. Lamarcus Says:

    Bird

Ur boy Grimes stays because he is a only cover zone cb. He will not be our number 1 corner. Never. If u can’t cover guys like jjur not a one. Sorry. I look at Grimes like I look at the rest of Mike smith boys. He is only good in Mike smith cover nothing scheme

  13. Lamarcus Says:

Gmc and Grimes are 1 trick ponies. Cut the crap. We lack defensive versatility.

  14. Bird Says:

    Lamarcus.

Yah. He is terrible. Every qb and offensive coordinator agrees with you.

Lamarcus day today: Get paint chips. Crush them up and do lines up his nose.

  15. Bird Says:

    Lamarcus posts

Blah blah blah Jameis looks amazing In The shower.

  16. Buddy Says:

Decisions like wanting Grimes back is just more proof the Klueless Koetter doesn’t belong as a head coach.

  17. mark2001 Says:

So we need two corners…sounds more and more like a trade down. Too bad we didn’t have a five as a trading chip. rather than a seven.

  18. Howard Cosell Says:

I don’t know….Team Glazer thinks they could get a cheaper corner somewhere else.

    NO hope for the Bucs

  19. Howard Cosell Says:

For most teams bringing back your best defensive player would be a no brainer. For the Bucs it’s another bad, short-sighted decision waiting to happen.

  20. Lamarcus Says:

    Bird

Explain why Grimes will put up a Sports center highlight and then on the very next play he gets embarrass? Can u explain to me and convince me why he is not a loafer in the run game?

We need players who can do more than one trick.

We are 34 built Defense playing 43 cuz of these so called star players not wanting to play other positions that could of help us win but no let’s keep players happy

  21. mark2001 Says:

Look at the Big Ten punk every other conference in the Bowls this year. At least college football has been a joy this year.

  22. Lakeland Says:

A 35 year old undersized Brent Grimes is your best CB? And people are still wondering why this team is “dead last” in total defense.

  23. Debilah Says:

BUC Believer, I don’t know what you heard, but Brent loves playing with the group of teammates that are the Buccaneers. Before you say something about my son make sure it is true. If there is a problem ask me.

  24. Debilah Says:

Haters are Team Grimey’s Motivator’s so keep on talking trash.

  25. Bird Says:

    Lamarcus

Yah. Having 10 seconds to throw the ball makes it difficult to cover a guy. Have you ever played sports?

  26. Bird Says:

  27. Lamarcus Says:

    Bird

Stop w the excuses for Grimes. Bucs can do better

  28. Bird Says:

    Lamarcus

You are 1 of 100 posters who thinks grimes is overrated. So keep doing paint chip lines.

  29. Lamarcus Says:

I think he is overrated trash btw. Don’t get me wrong Grimes is ok from the Qb release to wr but nothing else. Weak like gmc in the run game. Grimes out there slips and slide everywhere. Grimes leading the league in getting his socks juked from his ankles. And y’all tell me is worth #1 corner money??? Gtfoh

  30. Lakeland Says:

Lamarcus, who do the Bus have that is better?

  31. Lakeland Says:

    *Bucs*

  32. Lamarcus Says:

    Lakeland

No one is better than Grimes in Mike smith scheme. Don’t worry. Mike smith stays Grimes will stay. Money and a less demanding scheme is perfectly made for a 35 year corner. Bucs should be looking for a stud corrner who demanding about covering other teams number 1 receiving threat.

  33. Scott Sears Says:

I think it’s interesting that, despite the lousy season, I never read much (any?) complaining from Miko. Maybe that’s a good sign?

  34. Lamarcus Says:

    I don’t understand Bucs fans

JW, me, Justin Evans, Charles sims, dsmith, Marpet, ok Howard, vh3, and the rest of YOUNG players gotten heat at some point of season and

Gmc and Grimes and the rest of these established players get passes. ??? Am I missing something?? The owners have to have this in mind. Established vets getting paid monster contracts that can’t even keep the team on one side of the ball competitive in the middle of season AND can’t keep my younger players in check was a disaster. The vets have to be the biggest disappointment of the year. Even veteran coaches.

  35. Lamarcus Says:

    Scott Sears

Grimes won’t make it nowhere else. She is happy Grimes plays for the Bucs

  36. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe what I don’t get is all these “fans” are saying we shouldn’t resign Grimes…so who exactly on the roster can match his skillset and what makes them so sure one of the top CB free agents will indeed come to Tampa?

  37. Sunny Says:

Grimes is the problem , agree he slips out here a lot , he should draft or sign a FA CB as well as bring him back , coach up VH to play slot and CB should fine. It is the line that needs a complete overhaul. Poe , Ansah/Bennett , keys/Ferrell/Chubb and we r good there as well

  38. El_Buc941 Says:

@Joe and the same fools that where screaming that Suh was a better player than McCoy are the same ones that want Grimes out!and what exactly has Suh done since leaving Detroit?!

  39. Sunny Says:

    Not ***

  40. Lamarcus Says:

Sorry guys for wanting a A list corner who demands that he covers the other teams number 1. Not a Mike smith scheme system corner who plays within that scheme. I’m tired of the Fitzgeralds or JJ going off on us

What’s the good of having Grimes if he is not covering the other number 1. Talib and Revis did it. Jonathan Banks did it. Eric wright did it. Come on

  41. The Anomaly Says:

I thought Grimes played well for most of the year. Depends on what he’s asking for…who cares about miko.

  42. Buc Fan in NC Says:

Suh is better than McCoy though. Dolphins aren’t ever last in any Defensive category. Suh makes plays in the run and pass game

  43. Pickgrin Says:

We need Brent back for at least 1 more year. Hope he wants to stay and retire a Buccaneer.

At 35 years old next year yet still playing at a high level – I believe a contract basically identical to the one he just completed would be fair to both sides.

    2 years – $16M – half of that guaranteed in 2018.

  44. Rod Munch Says:

Lamarcus – Who says Grimes demands to play the 2nd WR? Anywho in some schemes the idea is you put your top corner versus the #2 WR, then you use your #2 corner AND a safety to play the other teams #1 WR. However, with that said, I never saw a real pattern this year on who was doing what, but I do know that one Grimes is better than the combo of Ryan Smith and Chris Conte – then again who isn’t better than that combo?

  45. Buc believer Says:

Yeah right Debilah your Brent’s parent like I am Vince Lombardi.

  46. Lamarcus Says:

    Rob Munch

I didn’t say Grimes demands to cover anyone. I want a cb that does tho

  47. darin Says:

With the same hc and defensive coordinator it doesnt matter who the corners are. No playoffs for this staff. Cant be outcoached by every team in the league and expect to make the playoffs. I love grimes, always have. The guy has been great for a long time. He would be wiser to go somewhere he has a shot to win it all. Unless of course at this stage of his career he wants to be able to take training camps off, like the rest of the team. If you want to be comfortable and dont wana sweat practicing flag football in florida then tampa is the new place to sign. Stick carriers my ass. This coaching staff turned these guys into soft asses. Cmon glazers come to your senses and fire these patty cakers!

  48. mark2001 Says:

BucBel…. Look at Brent’s moms name on Wiki and the sign in name…just saying, it could be true.

And BTW…all the corners do deserve a little break, when you consider the opposing QB has all day to throw the ball.

  49. JimmyJack Says:

Lamarcus….I get what you are saying. Though I don’t think a true #1 is that vital in our division but is big against a lot of teams in the league.

But What I don’t get is why you are hating on Grimes. What’s so wrong with keeping him involved until we get a true #1?

  50. gambelero Says:

Wouldn’t surprise me if mom and Miko frequently, vociferously disagree about stuff.

  51. tmaxcon Says:

of course he wants him back vh3 is a bust and their is nothing else on roster.

  52. JimmyJack Says:

Lamarcus……I can understand you wanting a legit #1 corner. But why exactly are you opposed to keeping Grimes on the team til we find a #1?

  53. JimmyJack Says:

Hahaha……I think some of y’all need to listen to what the broadcasters say about our players from time to time. Them guys know what they are talking about.

And no I’m not talking about Gene Deckerhoff. Blowhardt IMO

  54. Lamarcus Says:

    Jimmy jack

If we think retaining Grimes is the best fit then we are a long ways to go

  55. Lamarcus Says:

    Yeah listen to broadcasters

Jimmy jack tell Gruden there is no such player on the Bucs named Doug Evans.

  56. not there yet Says:

If the coaching staff can’t develop young players there’s no need to be employed. It’s easy to take credit for guys like beckwith and Kwon but pay attention to the Ryan Smith’s of the world who are only good with a certain team and system. Earn your money and develop someone because Brent is too old up be getting big money

  57. AlteredEgo Says:

    Grimes/wife are playing $$ games…let them play…hired hand…

  58. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Coach Koetter always says you can’t have enough good players.

Brent Grimes is a good player with plenty of hops left as well as amazing closing speed once the QB launches the pass.

It’s silly to not just pay him and get it over with. Do we honestly believe we’re going to find two corners better than Grimes? We have enough holes to fill already…see offensive and defensive lines…and we want to create more?

  59. JimmyJack Says:

Ok Lamarcus…….Take Grimes off our roster.

That leaves us with McClain and R.Smith as our corners.

Can you seriously tell me we are better off without Grimes? Come on man.

  60. Lamarcus Says:

No Jimmy jack. In a Mike smith scheme Grimes looks good.

That’s why now it’s the time to replace him u can’t build around a 35 years old corner. There is little to no upside to that. 1 injury to Grimes and we’re back to square 1

  61. JimmyJack Says:

Nah man you gotta keep Grimes if you can because he represents the only decent talent we have at the position.

Then you aim to add talent around him for an eventual replacement. Not let him walk and cross your fingers you can replace him.

How exactly are we going to replace him anyway? An unproven rookie?
If your talking free agency that’s not a guarantee but there is plenty of room in this backfield for Grimes and another talented CB.

Our defense is nowhere near good enough to let talent leave if they can help it. Your case makes more sense if Hargreaves was living up to his draft status.

  62. Lamarcus Says:

Grimes will stay cuz of Mike smith. Bucs better go after a top corner. Nuff said

  63. '79Defense Says:

If you can’t sign Brent, sign Miko to take his place. I think she would beat the crap out of anybody on the field.

  64. Midnightstroker1 Says:

Somebody already said it. Banking on a 35 undersized cb as your #1 is a joke. Yeah bring him back but bring a legit starting corner with him

  65. DB55 Says:

Kwon leads the team in Ints with 4 and Mcclain, Evans and Grimes are tied at 3. Grimes was hurt early in the season with a huge gash on his shin but came back strong towards end of season.

Highly unlikely you’ll find a better cb in free agency.

  66. mark2001 Says:

“I can’t believe how many idiots there are on here– and that description is too complementary.”

“If you can’t sign Brent, sign Miko to take his place. I think she would beat the crap out of anybody on the field.”

    Just saying.

  67. AceofAerospace Says:

Besides overpaying, why would a top tier free agent come to this team? What did they see that tells them this is a good career move? Nope. Not this year. This year will be another free agent bust. Either ownership is content with losing or Koetter knows he’s on a one year contract now without huge improvement. Neither scenario is very attractive.
