The Art Of Coach-Picking

Coaching-class data

Seven NFL teams had new head coaches to kick off the 2012 season, including Greg Schiano for Tampa Bay.

Only one made the playoffs, Chuck Pagano, and none remain on the job.

Fast-forward to 2014, and things look rosier for many in that coaching class.

2014 Notable NFL Head Coaching Hires

Jim Caldwell, Lions (36-28, 0-2 in playoffs, FIRED)
Bill O’Brien, Texans (31-33, 1-2 in playoffs)
Mike Zimmer, Vikings (39-25, 1-2 in playoffs)
Jay Gruden, Redskins (28-35-1, 0-1 in playoffs)
Lovie Smith, Bucs, (8-24, FIRED)

And then there’s Dirk Koetter’s coaching class of 2016, detailed in its entirety below:

2016 NFL Head Coaching Hires

Doug Pederson, Eagles (20-12, 2-0 in playoffs)
Mike Mularkey, Titans (18-14, 1-1 in playoffs, FIRED)
Adam Gase, Dolphins (16-16, + playoff loss)
Ben McAdoo, Giants (13-15, + playoff loss, FIRED)
Dirk Koetter, Bucs (14-18)
Chip Kelly, 49ers (2-14, FIRED)
Hue Jackson, Browns (1-31)

A few obvious things can be extrapolated from this data. First, the Bucs holding on to Dirk Koetter for a third season certainly was a normal happening in NFL circles. Second, the Bucs are a troubled franchise when studied with a wide lens. Third, the Vikings, Eagles, Texans and Dolphins have accomplished a heck of a lot with questionable quarterback situations.

A 10 year playoff drought. I don’t see an end to it anytime soon.

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

The talk show dominik debacle years and the loser lovie years are what this current regime is currently trying to fight out of!!!!!! Those two losers are why the whole franchise has been suck a wreck!!!!! Are they the best coaches in the nfl, of course not!!!!! If they can stabilize the roster and get some of the talent into “Productive Talent” then the coaches can see some consistent wins!!!!!! And by the way, this coaching staff covered up enough holes on this team in 2016 to be second in the division!!!!!! And that was the only time that has happen (except that 1 year carolina tanked for cam newton so the bucs finish 3rd) since Coach Gruden was here!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. 813bucboi Says:

    @realist

lovie has been gone for YEARS!!!!!!…..lol….5-11 belongs to dirk and smitty!!!!!

last year, it was, what a breathe of fresh air dirk is because we were winning…..but now that we’re losing its lovies fault…..lol….

    enough with the excuses….you’ve blamed:

    Hard knocks
    IRMA
    SCHEDULE
    injuries
    talent
    lovie

what will be the excuse(s) next year?……GO BUCS!!!!!

  4. LakeLand Says:

I look at the overall picture, and this is what I see.

NFC South Rankings For The Bucs

    Ownership-Worst
    General Manager-Worst
    Head Coach-Worst
    Coaching Staff-Worst
    Roster Talent-Worst

  5. 813bucboi Says:

so dirk is on the same level as McAdoo who had a lot of talent and was fired but has accomplished the same thing hue and chip has……NOTHING!!!!!…..no playoff appearance….no playoff win….

but we expect to get better…..my expectation of “getting better” are 10-6….some are 7-9…..sad sad sad…..GO BUCS!!!!!

    Lakeland

I commend your clarity. you are seeing the bucs situation very clearly. The organization ranks worst in every single category and will once again be the least desirable location in nfl for free agents. reality sucks. The optimists need to accept reality.

  7. LakeLand Says:

    Thanks tmaxcon,

The Bucs need to do some house cleaning.

  8. The Buc Realist Says:

    @tmaxcon

wrong on 1 count!!!!!!! The carolina panthers are up for sale, so the ownership ranking is “unknown” for the moment!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!

  9. LakeLand Says:

    Buc Realist,

I thought of that, but I don’t believe no one can do worse as the Glazers.

  10. tmaxcon Says:

    The Buc Realist

You know as well as I do any new owner in Carolina will be better than a glazer kid. glazer kids are doing their best to make old guys wish for cluverhouse again.

the glazers have failed for over a decade no reason to believe they will magically get it this off season. there truly is no hope Realist.

  11. tmaxcon Says:

    realist

if you play 50 First Dates – BLUERAY backwards twice you will notice it’s really about the bucs failed history year after year stuck in the basement.

  12. LakeLand Says:

We can go back to 10 years of playoffs

    Atlanta- 6 Times
    Carolina- 5 Times
    New Orleans-5 Times
    Tampa Bay – 0 Times

    This is a disgrace

  13. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Tmaxcon

I will watch it for a third time vs trying to do a remake of billy madison so fans can think they are re-living the past!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!

  14. darin Says:

Speaking of coach picking. Looks like Dick Labeau is out in Tennessee. Talk about a huge upgrade. Fire smith and hire labeau! Man that would improve this defense drastically. He would have these linebackers all over the qbs. He is far from predictable, smiths calling card.

  15. Eric Says:

I don’t get the “normal happening” comment.

Of the twelve coaches eight of them have been to the playoffs. Only Lovie, Dirk, Chip Kelly and Hue Jackson failed to make the playoffs.

So were on the Browns level. Swimming around at rock bottom.

Not normal. Abnormally bad. But normal for us unfortunately.

  16. Bucn Enough Says:

    TMaxcon / Lakeland ;

I could not agree more…this franchise is in NFL purgatory….
Next year is a toss away season…the Glazers will save some coaching$ and then clean house…

After that..there is nothing in Larry, Moe and Curly Glazers history that points to them making a good coaching hire…

Heck..look at the new uni’s they approved…that is evidence enough that they can’t make a good decision.

Expect the basement again….the good news is, there is no place to go but up.

  17. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Doug Pederson’s seat was getting warm. This summer Pederson claimed the Eagles talent was equal to the Green Bay team that won the SB. Since he had two stints with the Pack he probably knew what he was talking about but Philly fan was upset with that bit of what they interpreted as being overly optimistic.

I guess Pederson now gets the last laugh over Philly fan.

Sports fans tend to be entirely too dogmatic and black and white. Did Pederson suddenly become a genius? If Philly fails to make the playoffs next year will he be a loser?

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You know the Directv commercial vs Cable TV?

The one where a person likes sitting on gum, likes running into a window….likes spilling hot coffee on themselves…

Perhaps Directv should add….”Being a Buc Fan”

  19. Tom S. Says:

It’s hard to make the playoffs when you have a crappy roster.

So the Bucs, like the Browns keep recycling coaches with the same idiot, incompetent GM’s like Dominik/Licht unable to build a competent roster capable of competing with teams who have a clue.

    Quite the “Rockstars” right Joe?

  20. NFLNut Says:

The ONLY 2016 coach, other than Koetter who has not been fired AND has not made the playoffs yet is … Hue Jackson … of the genius CLEVELAND BROWNS … hmmm …

  21. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @TBBF

That was a good one!!! LOL

  22. Mike Johnson Says:

I Pity The Bucs and its organizational skills. This team ain’t goin nowheres next season but back to the celler of the South Division. I’ll always be a Bucs fan. But I won’t spend a dime on them, get my hopes up high….Nor Piss in my pants over them like Buc Realist. Been there..Done that before many of you were even born!! One day we will rise again. I just do not forsee it happenning anytime soon.

  23. orlbucfan Says:

tmaxidiot is now wishing for Culverhouse to come back from the dead?????!!! You. are. a. yahoo. for. sure! Under the Curse of Culverhouse, 5-11 was a winning record. No thank you!!!!!!

  24. orlbucfan Says:

Glazer Boyz aren’t anything to get excited about, but they are better than Culverhouse…ye gawds!!

  25. Ed Kerber Says:

I say hire Dick Labeau as a 3-4 consultant. See the Smitty Defense and sprinkle in some Lebau concepts. Give some pop to the Flex package.
