The Potential Cornerbacks Crisis

December 12th, 2017

Brent Grimes

Imagine the Buccaneers without 34-year old Brent Grimes.

(See Minnesota in Game 2).

It’s an ugly vision.

The Bucs don’t have a quality No. 2 cornerback on the roster, and without Grimes, they don’t have a No. 1.

That’s a gargantuan problem when you have no pass rush and a division sporting Matt Ryan, Julio Jones and Cam Newton.

The Vernon Hargreaves situation is a mess and he surely can’t be counted on moving forward. If you get something out of Hargreaves next season, that’s a bonus at this point.

Ryan Smith is trying and learning but looks to be on an E.J. Biggers career path (hey, Biggers had a seven-year career totaling three teams). Josh Robinson is a cornerback who isn’t permitted to play defense. Javien Elliott is just a live body.

Robert McClain has provided excellent depth and has been the versatile surprise of this season. He’s got three picks, a career high. But he’s really just a depth guy, one who turns 30 next summer.

Yes, without Grimes the Bucs would be in crisis mode at the position.

Grimes becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season, one in which he’s proven he can still keep offensive coordinators up at night. He’ll be in high demand, assuming he wants to keep playing.

If the Bucs can’t re-sign Grimes, then the front office literally is going to have to pull off offseason miracles to shore up the cornerbacks situation and still have the draft/free agency juice to repair a broken pass rush from an ancient defensive line.

Please. Somebody please re-sign Grimes sooner rather than later so Joe can get a decent night of sleep this offseason.

Need to draft Minkah Fitzpatrick with our first rounder.

  2. C eh N eh D eh Says:

Reedy returning punts last night for world champs and Verner in at CB for Miami…everyone plays better away from the Bucs. ugh

  3. C eh N eh D eh Says:

Grimes should be getting a 2 year extension as we speak…Free Agency and he’s a goner, no question

  4. tmaxcon Says:

vh3’s only future is coaching pop warner in clearwater. just cut the losses now and do both vh3 and the fans a favor. short, slow and a clown is not a recipe for success at cb. if he spent more time trying to keep up with the receivers versus dancing after overthrows maybe there would be some hope but clearly there is no hope for yet another wasted first round pick by the glazer led bucs.

grimes. why in the world would grimes come back to this crap show…

  5. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Guess the new gm will have to go after Trumaine Johnson and Demarcus Lawerence with everything he’s got. Perhaps Nate Solder as well.

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

How long have the Bucs have had a secondary crisis while ignoring the D-line?????? They loaded up with the no-fly zone and how did that work without a pass rush!!!!!!!

I would rather have no one back there if they start to fix the D-line!!!!!!

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

@tmax- On this we totally agree. In my opinion, VHIII not Aguayo, may be Licht’s downfall. Who scouted this guy?! Wasn’t he drafted like 11th overall? That’s a HUGE miss!

  8. tmaxcon Says:

    Bucsfanman

it clearly was a HUGE reach to please the Local Feel Good Storying Loving Bucs Fan… You can’t win with feel good stories that being said Most buc fans are just as happy going 0-16 every year as long as one of dungy the clowns rejects is running a conservative tampa 2 defense full of passive choirboys who smile when they lose. so glazers were appaling to their base with the vh3 reach.

  9. JonBuc Says:

Miko won’t lent Brent re-sign with this shat show. He’ll get an opportunity tomplay for a winner to close out his career. It won’t be in Tampa.

  10. Bucsfanman Says:

And T, it’s going to set this franchise back yet again!

  11. tmaxcon Says:

    Bucsfanman

yep as bucfans we are screwed and have very little to NO hope

  12. tmaxcon Says:

glazer clowns have had a decade to figure it out and have not. newsflash… the clowns are not going to magically figure it out this offseason… it’s another decade in the basement with no hope with glazer clowns running the show.

  13. SB Says:

I wouldn’t give up on VH3 just yet. Every player on the team has regressed this yr. That is plain old Bad Coaching.

  14. tmaxcon Says:

    SB

short and slow can’t be fixed nor can the immature antics and selfish acts. he is useless and a certified first round bust. that’s what happens when you draft local feel good stories for crap programs. it never works out.

  15. JimmyJack Says:

I say Hargreaves deserves another year before being written off. He may never live up to his draft status but he did show promise after his rookie year. Hard to imagine he would drop so far off this year.

  16. Mike Johnson Says:

Cornerback crisis my A..! We’d better hope we move up a few more notches in the draft. There are only maybe 2 or 3 good Defensive Ends this year. And we all know Chubby is going to be gone by the time we pick.

  17. lightningbuc Says:

He will wind up with one of the LA teams so Miko can reside in Hollywood.

  18. DB55 Says:

Javien Elliott is just a live body.

Robert McClain has provided excellent depth and has been the versatile surprise of this season.
    —————————-
Sorry joe but this is total garbage. McClain should be cut immediately he is soft and slow. He provides little to no effort against the run and his ints have been gimmes. His picks aren’t like Grimes picks, he’s not tracking wr and making plays.

Elliot on the other hand hasn’t been burnt once and plays huge against the run. I’m being to think DK and MS are gator fans.

Which brings me to vh3. Sure he’s short and gets abused but you can not tell me that he’s not a better returner than Humphries. Our ST sucks and we just lost our speed returner. Why not put a faster quick guy back there? Ijs who is Humphries father and how much money does he pay the Bucs?

  19. SCBucsFan Says:

On a bright note, teams that are 4-9 don’t have to worry about #1 corners because they aren’t going to win many games anyway

  20. BucTrooper Says:

Grimes won’t be back. I bet Miko is chattering in his ear about one more season and making a run at a ring so I’ll expect him to be a Seahawk or a Patriot next year. Maybe a Cowboy.

  21. Lamarcus Says:

Grimes is toast he covers the pass well but that’s it. Serial loafer!!!! Can’t tackle makes a play and for sure burnt the very next play. We can do better than this

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Free Cornerbacks
    • Malcolm Butler – (27) $15M
    • Bashaud Breeland – (25) $11M

    Draft Slot Cornerback
    • Arrion Springs

  23. not there yet Says:

It’s the end of the season and Grimes looks like he’s running out of gas. If Smith didn’t feel comfortable having him shadow Julio Jones then I don’t think he’s worth the money. I’m tired of seeing them try to makeover the secondary someone please start up front with the line then work out. Improve your pass rush stop drafting 1st round corners, someone will be available in free agency just don’t overpay for an old corner

  24. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Sign Free Agent Cornerbacks
    • Malcolm Butler – (27) $15M
    • Bashaud Breeland – (25) $11M

    Draft Slot Cornerback
    • Arrion Springs

  25. Buc believer Says:

Brent wants to go back to Miami. All it would take is an apology and for them to pay him what he is worth. He is gone from here in 3 games.

  26. passthebuc Says:

The need a front 4 more than CB’s. With a good front four, and our great LB corps, the back end will be much better. Trade GMC for youth. (and I am not a GMC hater), I think he is very very good.
We need much more 2nd, 3rd and 4th round choices, to shore up the front lines, both D, and O.

  27. BucThis Says:

If we didnt sign Cambell for $17M a year I dont see us spending $15M a year on a CB. I’d love to have Butler or Johnson but I just dont see it happening. Butler has already won a superbowl, will he really give it all he has to get back? Our secondary is F*CK3&!

  28. Capt.Tim Says:

Tmaxi- agree 100% on your take of VH3.
You cant coach short and slow. And him antics just add insult to injury.

While its had to judge, Ryan Smith has looked like he will easily be a good starting CB next year. Even though QBs have MINUTES in the Pocket- Smith is always with his man.
No CB can cover a WR for 10 seconds!

That said- we will still need a Number one CB. Dont think Grimes wants to keep covering Wrs with no pass rush.
He can get picked up on a real football team, and escape this fiasco.

    And will need Depth.

So, in the first round- we need (2) Defensive ends, (2) Cornerbacks, A Running back, a nose tacklef ll
    And quite possibly a Quarterback

In the Second round- a guard, a Tackle, a strong safety, a center, and a Wr- because I doubt Desean returns

    Looking good for next year

  30. Lord Cornelius Says:

“I would rather have no one back there if they start to fix the D-line!!!!!!”

Exactly. It seriously does not matter who we line up at CB. When we rush 4 the QB will have 5 seconds to throw the ball; and someone will get open; even if we had 2 in his prime Revis Islands playing outside.

You build teams from the trenches out. This is where Light has failed hardcore. He does well at picking talent in the draft but his overall approach to the team building has been pretty damn bad in terms of a multi year vision. The 2014 and 2016 drafts were pretty damn bad in that regard.

This is stupid but many Bucs fans honestly nailed what we should have done in those drafts pre-draft:

2014 – Everyone wanted an OG in r3. There are bad4ss guards from that draft we could have had. Instead we went with Charles freaking Sims. I can give a pass on ASJ because I was sold on the talent and we needed weapons – but a 2nd RB in the 3rd when your lines need help is insanely stupid.

We shore up the OG there; and then all of a sudden our interior is way better after the 2015 draft with 2 bad4ss guards instead of 1. Instead of signing Sweezy we could go after a C; and have a really good interior this year that was young and needing no upgrade.

2016 – Everyone would have loved Rankins or Tunsil R1. Bucs fans are smart and know how important lineman are. Some were ok with VHIII but many were not (I was one that endorsed the pick but I was wrong). But the biggest mistake of course was Aguayo.

If we would have gone Rankins/Spence; we probably get our CB there instead of Aguayo. James Bradberry went 3 picks after Aguayo and is still starting for the Panthers. A 6’1 212 lb physical corner. Or we could have gotten another pass rusher or DT like Adam Gotsis. Anything other than a f*cking kicker that ended up causing a ripple effect of a kicking problem and costing us games.

For supposedly not having a set scheme Mike Smith sure wanted some tiny a4ss corners. That’s great for the nickle position but in today’s NFL physical man corners + elite pass rush = the key to most defenses dominating.

VHIII could probably be a great nickle CB. At this point that’s gotta be the hope with that guy. Or just moving on in general.

  31. LUVMYBUCS Says:

We’re gonna have to trade/release/restructure a few players.
Pushing our available capspace north of $100M

So we should have plenty of room for:

    Mike Evans

    1st Tier
    -DE
    -NT
    -CB

    2 Tier
    -DT
    -CB

  32. darin Says:

Unless we get a new defensive coaching staff theres no reason to spend a high pick on a corner guys. What has smith done with hargreaves? N the guy is very talented. If we are gona sit back in that mess of a zone then any corner will work. His defense is simply set up to succeed IF the 4 guys on the D line get pressure. We all know there isnt any nor will there be any with these d linemen. The fact he hasnt blitzed more and played any press is simply inexcusable. We need to see who our D coordinator is and whayt defense he is gona run before we start doing our mock drafts. To suggest corners early is crazy. If mike smith is here next year we gota take a d lineman every round. N if dirk is here we gota take an o lineman every round. Too bad theres only one draft and please glazers dont let those clowns be around past black monday!

  33. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    LC

I respect everything U said brotha.

But If we move accordinly this time.
We should have plenty of cap space & picks.
For a quick retool ala JVille.
But we have to be super aggressive.

Jville didn’t rest on laurels after they signed Calais Campbell.

    They parlayed that signing w/:
    • CB – A.J. Bouye
    • S – Barry Church

    And 2 Top if off:
    • Drafted DE – Dawuane Smoot in the 3rd Round.
    • Traded for DT – Marcell Dareus

Now they’ve got the deepest -most savage defense in the league.

Sidebar: Hmm wasn’t there a guy on these very boards.
Begging for the BUCS to Sign Campbell, Bouye & Church?

  34. JMarkBuc Says:

Maybe it’s a given that Grimes is our best corner, sad as that is.

Last Sunday, Grimes was playing the usual MS eight yard cushion,,let the guy run right by him to make the catch. Pissed me off then and still does. Fortunately LVD forced a fumble, but still, what kind of BS effort was that? Joe get a grip, if Grimes leaves it ain’t the end of the world. We got plenty of other problems.

Derrick Brooks for GM. Restore the Defense.

  35. JMarkBuc Says:

    For 2018

Trade ME, JW and Gmac, throw in VH and get as many picks as possible. Surely Cleveland would bite. They’re the only other team at least or slightly more inept than we are…

  36. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    *And 2 Top it off:
    • Drafted DE – Dawuane Smoot in the 3rd Round.
    • Traded for DT – Marcell Dareus

don’t forget the salary cap will start to go down along with future TV money. i see a strike coming. networks are bleeding money across the board no way they can continue to keep overpaying for nfl games. especially considering younger fans do not watch nfl

i would have more hope if you were the calling the shots than the glazers. until glazers are gone there is no hope.

  38. Bucsfanman Says:

    I’ll second that.

LUVMYBUCS for GM. Start the campaign now!

  39. Pete Mitchell Says:

Yeah, cause there is just no way we could ever manage to be the 31st ranked defense without him. Sure glad he’s such an integral part of our success.

You’ve take into account – the new $2.5B Verizon deal

The league wants to sell more content than ever, and it is finding new ways to get NFL games onto the internet through partners who are clamoring to get their hands on TV-quality content to distribute on much smaller screens.

    And W/

    Bucsfanman

    lol

  42. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @LUV

I always enjoy your offseason suggestions and typically agree. I think we’re going to need to be aggressive about the D-line especially in FA since you can’t count on guys out of the draft to typically do well there their rookie year unless they’re Myles Garret or Kahil Mack or something.

What are your thoughts on the O-line? Are there any studs in FA potentially at C / RT / OG?

Personally I’m ok with Smith at LT. Move Ali back to RG. Cut Sweezy and sign 2 of either a C,LG, orRT. Whichever position we don’t sign – draft.

As of right now I’m thinking
-sign the best DE available (Lawrence / Ansah/ ?)
-sign a solid young disruptive DT if available (Sheldon Richardson/?)
-sign 2 better than average players at C / LG / RT
    -re-sign Grimes for 2 seasons
-sign any S to replace Conte

R1 – best available edge rusher. Either move up for Chubb or move back and take a guy like Key – all depending on where we sit
    R2-R4 – best available DT/DE or LG/C/RT – coming away with 3 D-lineman total and 1 O-lineman. R5-R7 grab RB/CB/WR.

That’d be adding 3 bodies to the O-line; and 4 bodies to the D-line – with 2 vets on each side to help bring along the youth movement.

Move VHII to nickle and let Grimes/Ryan Smith play outside with an actual pass rush. Justin Evans = your ball hawk S and we’d just need anything better than Conte to upgrade the other side which should be something we could grab in FA.

    Thoughts?

  43. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I wanna bounce a few things off U – my brotha.
But I gotta wrap up a few things up 1st.

Hopefully we’ll continue this conversation later though.

  44. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

We got someone to go opposite Evans. His name is Keith Tandy….Smith is an idiot after the way he played in 2016 for not playing him this season. Very much part of the reason the Bucs are 4 & 9 with a good chance of finishing 4 & 12…. Hope Smith, Koetter and Licht all find another franchise to Fuch Up!!! Damn sure has been hard this season with these clowns leading the way!!!

  45. 813bucboi Says:

too soon to give up on VHG….everyone on this team has regressed to the point where they just look flat out bad….look at mike evans….he’s a shell of himself….same with Winston…..kwon has regressed a little bit….

these players aren’t being put in position to succeed….when was the last time we saw a fade to evans in the red zone?….

good coaching and players playing to their strength is what needs to happen….don’t throw away good players just because we cant coach….GO BUCS!!!!

  46. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @813

Agree on VHIII. I think at worst he can be a very good nickle CB at least – and that’s a valuable player to have. Not worth the draft pick but still can be a valuable player.

  47. Bucsfanman Says:

Tandyman, I didn’t receive my invite. I haven’t seen #37 much other than ST, and the OT drive against G.B.(Sorry to bring it up!).

  48. Bucsfanman Says:

    LC- Why the Conte hate?!
He’s getting long in the tooth too. I had half expected Tandy to have at least garnered more playing time, splitting reps at least. They’ll need to address this position one way or the other, at the very least for depth.
Evans seems to be coming along.
I do agree with most of what you’re saying though. We can ill afford to ignore the trenches any longer.

    #BuildtheTRENCHES

  49. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @bucsfan

I don’t hate conte really. He’s just been our biggest liability on the back end out of all our S imo. Him and Ward.

I duno what to think of Tandy because he hasn’t been playing much.

  50. Smokingjoebucfan Says:

@tmax Your post about the salary cap going down made me go do some research. According to the NFL salary tracker your Tampa Bay Bucs will have $62 mil and some change in cap room plus the carryover from this year they didn’t use…. check this out. Very telling, the 10 teams with the most cap room going into 2018 will be home for the playoffs. The bottom 10 with the exception of maybe the Phins will be still going at it come January… cheap a$$ owners is a major reason why we suck… It seems the boys didn’t mind spending daddy’s money back in the day. Now that it’s theirs we’ve slipped back to the days of Culverhouse. 2nd rate players just to be able to field a team and F the fans

  51. JWilson1016 Says:

Well, being that Miko was beefing on twitter with another Bucs fan the other day and told said fan “Good luck on finding his replacement next season” and also she told fan that Brent said to suck his…. well you know. I’d say its a lock he’s gone next year.

  52. Bucsfanman Says:

LC- Just bustin’. There are times where I say “that’s a good play” and then times where I’m pulling my hair out. Of course, not having a pass-rush doesn’t help either. Ward I could do without, for sure.
Tandy’s had a hard time getting in the game. I hope it’s not stubbornness on behalf of coaching. It’s too late in the game to be playing reindeer games!!!
    (OK, that was bad!)

  53. derrickbrooksforGM Says:

Once I get hired as GM and I make the DLINE grat again, the secondary will improve drastically. VHiii will be resurrected. Enjoy Retirement Grimes!

  54. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

2018 arizona 1st round pick and patrick peterson

  55. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Miko will simply want R E S P E C T! Respect=$$$$

In the past five years Brent has exactly the same number of picks as Richard Sherman, the top two interceptors in the league.

So Brent nor Miko claim Brent is Sherman…but Sherman makes FOUR TIMES as much as Brent. He’s clearly not four times better than Brent. Brent has had trouble getting paid though. He’s due. Give him his money and be done with it.

  56. Pepsi Says:

This is why im hoping Licht is out of here after this year. He’ll be the idiot to waste our top 10 pick on a CB. Hes drafted a WR top 10, a nickel CB at 11, a kicker in round 2… TE round 1. Meanwhile were a bad team precisely because of both lines, especially the Dline. Even if you like those players he drafted, its just way too much messing around at positions that just dont matter. Bucs should have only 3 players on their board round 1. Chubb should be at the top of their board, followed by Nelson and McGlinchey. With Licht at the helm i fear we could be drafting a Safety or CB.

  57. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

Bucsfanman My Man!!!! Kinda hard to give up an invite when the clowns keep him on the sideline. I have given up man. The idiots running the show have proven to me with their 4 & 12 record that they don’t have a clue. All I can hope for now is that they get fired or Keith gets traded. Thanks for not making it to hard on me for my loyalty to Keith. Coached him in High School and I know how he is wrapped. Pure Winner!!!!!! Just wish they hadn’t been so ignorant to not play him. I can guarantee you that the Bucs wouldn’t have ended the season 4 & 12……Merry Chistmas Busfanman to you and your Family……

  58. Bucsfanman Says:

Thanks Tandyman! Merry Christmas to you and yours as well!

It is unfortunate that we don’t get to see some more of these guys given our record. Look at it this way though, at least Keith gets to play a game he loves on a professional level. Not a bad gig, eh!

  59. Capt.Tim Says:

Talking about The sscondary, with absolutely no pass rush
Is like putting warm socks on a dead man

No sock is gonna warm those foot

  60. B Coburn Says:

Reality is we need to go out and get 2 starting or future starting corners whether he comes back or not. Im assuming hes gone, bu even if he cimes back at his age you have to assume the worst and hope for the best. Assume he’s a nickel next year. No other cb on this team had proven to be starting material. Sign one in free agency and draft one in first 3 rounds. Same with defensive end and maybe one more mid to late rounds. Same with ol between center and tackle (market back to guard, ditch sweezy)

  61. B Coburn Says:

    Same with rb

  62. Maze Says:

Actually a number one cornerback locks down number one wide receivers. So clearly the Bucs don’t have one of those either. Grimes more of a 1B

  63. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

Yeah your right Bucsfanman!!!! Pretty special guy Keith is. Yeah guess I’m living the Pro Life through him. Wish I could have done what he’s doing instead of working as a High School Guidance Counselor and Coach. But that wasn’t to bad a life either. Just didn’t make the Ducks a Pro Athlete makes. But I did have the opportunity to work with kids like Keith so I have been blessed my Brother!!! Go Bucs!!!!!

  64. Crazed Fan Says:

    Screw Gruden!!!

  65. DoNUTS Says:

Signals that your team sucks and the coach is being fired…..fans are talking about the draft in December.

Does it really matter who starts any game for the Bucs for the rest of this year? Nope. I hope Winston/Martin starts every game too to guarantee more losses.

This team has a lot of work to do as I am of the belief that they have lost significant fan support (stick carriers returned their sticks last week at front gate) this time around. This year was an embarrassment and they need to apologize to the Tampa fans. Anything less will cost them big money. Its 100% on the Glazers! Glazers really should sell this team; really the best time was after Malcolm died. They are not doing any better with Man U – who had a brawl this week with Man City outside their locker room AFTER the game. Nothing states strong ownership and discipline like a player brawl. Its time to beat the ownership change drum hard as this is the only way culture change will occur. I dont think JBF will go out on that limb but the rest of us can. The problme with selling the team is Greedy Glazers wont sell until after the next SuperBowl since they dont want to miss out on all that free stadium revenue. NFL teams are losing value specifically TV revenue/money value. Sad billionaires!

  66. Lakeland Says:

If they had decent pass rushers, they wouldn’t have to worry about Corners.

  67. D-Rome Says:

Missing on a 1st round pick and a couple of 2nd round picks is usually enough for teams to move on from their GM.

  68. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We need at least one CB & 6 DEs…..with Noah Spence…..we need 6 in case the other 5 can’t rush….

  69. Roy T. Buford Says:

Joe, this is where a media guy who is also a fan needs to hammer home to the new GM and/or HC on a daily basis that a Top 5 priority the first weeks has to be to re-sign Grimes. Are you up to the task? The Bucs should do it a la Ronde Barber style, where Schiano convinced Barber just enough to hang on for another year. Give Miko sideline access during games if that’s what it takes; consider conjugal visits on away games (she brought that up, not me)–anything for one more year.

  70. 813bucboi Says:

    LC

tandy not playing has boggled my mind as well….cant understand how he fell off the cliff….GO BUCS!!!!

  71. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

&13 That’s one of the reasons they are 4 & 9. He was always prepared a team player a great positive attitude and one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet. Plus a pretty good football player. He was a victim of poor decisions by poor Coaches. Kinda like what Barber is going through now. Barbers better than Martin…..Tandy was better than Ward & Conte. But it’s all about who the Coaches choose to play and as a player if as Koetter says “ITS HIS TURN” & if it’s not your turn what can you do but stand on the sideline and watch your team go 4 & 9!!!!! Kinda really sucks!!!! Go Bucs!!!! NEXT YEAR

  72. Buc4eva Says:

IT DOESNT MATTER!!!! OUR COORDINATOR IS TOO STUPID TO PUT HIS BEST PLAYER AGAINST THEYRE BEST PLAYER!!!! As long as mike smith is here they should just bench all of the starters because it won’t make a damn bit of difference…..PERIOD!
