Jameis Isn’t Struggling

December 21st, 2017

Numbers paint a different picture. (Photo courtesy of Buccaneers.com.)

Joe wrote last week that he thought he was living in an alternative universe.

The house had come down upon America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. Bucs fans had turned on him. A good number wanted Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to unload him, now. This same loud crowd believed the Bucs were better off with Brian Hoyer or Tom Savage or Paxton Lynch.

Joe wrote last week that other than fumbles — yes, a large concern — Joe didn’t think Jameis was playing that awful.

Well, it seems the numbers bear out that Joe was onto something.

Good man that he is, Jeff Cameron, he of “The ScuttleBucs Podcast” (along with co-host Tom Lang), part of the proud and popular JoeBucsFan.com Podcast Network, e-mailed Joe stats on Jameis in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. They show that when Jameis has been healthy enough to finish a game this year, he’s not bad at all (again, sans the fumbles).

In games that Jameis has finished in 2017, Jameis has attempted 303 passes and completed 200 for an average of 66 percent. Not shabby at all.

In those same games, Jameis has thrown for 17 touchdowns against 6 picks.

If you are into quarterback ratings — Joe is not — Jameis, in games he has finished, has a rating of 104 which apparently is tied with Tom Brady and Drew Brees.

Oh, and that’s with a horrid offensive line (only if you believe the loud crowd — because we all know the offensive line of the Bucs is responsible for everything from North Korea jamming international computer networks with ransomware to a volcano erupting in Bali).

Maybe it is to the point that folks shouldn’t be guzzling so many Bud Lights during Bucs games? Dilly, dilly!!!

the only number that matters… 8 losses in a row and 2-9 for the year…

    Joe don’t know football…..

12 losses in one year is totally unacceptable. Tie Koetter and Smitty to..The Whipping Post!!!

Winston has struggled a lot this year. He has struggled with reading D and finding check downs along with bad mechanics at times. He seemed to have a bone head play slump during the season. He has regressed and hence he needs a new voice IMO. He has played well at times BUF-ATL games but he has not been consistent at any time. You can carve up the stats however you want to meet your point.
The OL has not helped but its not the sole reason for the poor play. Marpet at center was a bad decision. Sweezy needs to go. Our LT is soft at times and is probably better at guard. Anyway, I think 2 more consistent performances from Winston may help give promise for the off season. This team needs MAJOR change to its lines to compete in NFC south. I am staying on the Winston train but lets be honest about it. The Bucs are a few major pieces away from any playoffs. DE-OL-CB should be off season focus of FA money.
Can we select a decent RB in round 3-5? <<How many RBs were selected last year that made an impact? Barber should start next year.
Can we hire P Manning or a QB guru to train Winston this off season? Bajankian is not good enough. He needs mental work/reps and better QB dropback technique drills for his footwork and downfield vision.

“the only number that matters… 8 losses in a row and 2-9 for the year…”

Oh really? So if Jameis throws 6 picks in the next game, it won’t matter right? Because only wins and losses matter? You wouldn’t dare complain about those picks, right?

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Every young quarterback makes mistakes, and the good ones learn from them and fixes them in the off seasons.

    Jameis is no different.

Anyone wanting him gone has to be from among the same people who never wanted him here to begin with. These people, who refuse to admit they were wrong, hope Jameis fails no matter the cost to the team.

In my case, I did not want Jameis here. Before he was drafted, I was leaning strongly toward Mariota. Anyone who was here back then will attest to that.

My concerns were multiple. I was concerned about off the field behavior. I even said that the most likely time he would misbehave would be the off season after his first season…because in his draft year, everything would be keeping him busy. Turns out I was right about that if the Uber thing turns out to be true.

I was concerned that because he was a gunslinger, he would make bonehead throws. TRUE.

But, to be frank…those were the only things I was right about. His leadership has been excellent. His work ethic has been top-notch. He works a lot in the community for charitable causes. He puts in the work in the off season, even away from the team. And he handles his pressers very well.

    Would Mariota have been better?

Really, no one can be sure. Koetter has worked with pocket passers AND mobile QBs, and done well with both. Just because Mariota has been injured elsewhere, that doesn’t mean he would be in Tampa.

BUT…Jameis Winston has proven himself thus far. He IS our franchise QB, and to want him gone at this point is ignorant and self-serving.

  11. Bucsfan951 Says:

Bucs average 8 points in the first half and then go on to average 3 points in the third quarter. So they average 11 points going into the fourth quarter… not very good in my book. Winston can throw for 400 but if there isn’t points being put on the board, what good is that? Bucs fk average a little over 8 points in the fourth quarter so I’d love to see a break down of Winston’s yards per quarter.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

Winston has struggled at times but I think most of that is due to poor coaching and bad play calling….the offense has no identity….when you have no identity, you struggle to do a lot of things…..

get the right coaches in here so our young players can develop….GO BUCS!!!

  13. JonBuc Says:

Despite all the distractions…Jamies played great on Monday. Every pass was a good one that I can recall…the incompletions coming on spikes, bouncing off receivers chests and a pick wiped out by a penalty. Looking around the league at QB play overall…Jamies deserves more time in Tampa. I hope it works out…

  14. SteelStudBuc Says:

Fitzpatrick has a better winning percentage.

  15. Eric Says:

Everybody knows 6 picks for the season = turn over machine.

Jameis is poised to break a Lot of records and win championships. If we can just quit wasting our time on Atlanta rejects and bring in a great coach that knows how to win.

  16. Lamarcus Says:

    3pac = MVP 2018

  17. Joeypoppems Says:

The mistakes and boneheaded plays he makes are magnified by the loses.

If the team was 10-4 instead of 4-10 and he was making the same bad decisions like the fumble in GB or even “eating a w” the reaction wouldnt be as harsh on him.

  18. ClwJB Says:

JW doesn’t play defense or special teams, which have cost us 4 wins this year.

8-6 puts us in the thick of the race

This season is NOT on JW, even with the injury and bad stretch of TO’s…he clearly showed (again) against the dirty birds that he can be a steady performer, accurate, and make plays with his legs when he needs too…

Lets focus on shoring up our horrible D and and Special Teams, maybe a couple FA OLineman at Gaurd/T

JW is the real deal, just young still….in 2 more years when he has memorized every coordinator in the league he will far more resemble Big Ben/Rivers type QB – a big pocket passer with just enough in the legs to buy time and make plays

  19. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Oh Canada

if he throws 6 picks and we win, well…..No

  20. BrianBucs Says:

I guess those easy short completions and garbage time yards against soft late game and prevent defenses really do add up

I love how people think a 23 year old qb with a bad running game bad line bad defense bad coaching staff even bad fanbase should take his team to the Superbowl. His coaching is appalling his defense worse. Do you think Brady wins all his games if he takes the lead or ties the game and the defense gives him no chance ? Just take Sunday for example. Takes the lead only for pitt to go right down the field and lose on a questionable call. But the pats won so it doesn’t matter. Jameis has the same rating as Brees and Brady. Surprise surprise as soon as desean is out he has his best game. No whining for targets on the sidelines or plays forcing to desean. Amazing he has no trouble hitting Evans deep

  23. C eh N eh D eh Says:

@Jmarkbuc…6 picks and win?…good luck with that lol

Many of you are freaking IDIOTS!!!!!!Jameis can not win by himself IDIOTS!!!!!! It takes a team to win IDIOTS!!!!!!! He has done more than enough to win. Tell your defense to stop someone one IDIOTS. Tell your defense to not be last in 3rd down percentage IDIOTS!!!!!! You are a complete MORON if you think jameis being 2-9 only falls on him. IDIOTS!!!!!!

  28. T Syce Says:

Winston has big potential. That being said …JOE UR A REAL BOZO WHEN IT COMES TO HIM. HE’S A TURNOVER MACHINE!!!Yes he can be great but for now he’s average at best. He makes poor decisions with the ball. As good as he did Monday he STILL f***** up. One fumble and one pick he got away with due to a flag. Every game he throws 2-3 passes that coulda been picks. He’s not a bust yet but he ain’t what you claim. stop being stupid joe.#OBJECTIVITY!!!

Jameis actually has a 101.0 not a 104 rating in those games, and a 304.5 ypg rather than a 303.0 but the ScuttleBucs were mostly right … of course, this is all stats and stuff that I posted before their podcast … a lot of my stuff is parroted which is flattering and I don’t care if anyone credits me, just keep up the good work 🙂

Check out on nfl where Gil Brandt has the young qb’s rated on talent .Wentz is 1st while Winston is rated 8th . M.M. is rated 4th

  31. NFLNut Says:

^ Hahahahaha, Gil Brandt is a loon … Mariota is one of the worst QBs in the entire NFL whereas Jameis, in his 8 healthy games, has put up MVP numbers … the media cracks me up with their utter stupidity and transparent biases.

  32. NFLNut Says:

P.S. Gil Brandt might want to WATCH the last Bucs v Falcons game to see “talent” being realized … Mariota and Dak are not even physically capable of playing the game Jameis played last week … they don’t have the arm talent to do so.

  33. NFLNut Says:

I just read the Brandt article … his comment on Mariota shows his bias as he states, “Mariota is not having a good season. But I honestly just love this guy” … he actually says that Tennessee’s run-first system isn’t good for Mariota and that he should be throwing more … throwing more? Hahahahaha, why, so he can have 20 picks instead of 14? How stupid.

Good luck to media types like Brandt writing a truthful article when they are so biased.

Anyways, Brandt’s rankings are completely absurd.

His rankings in order are: Wentz, Goff, Watson, Mariota, Dak, Garoppolo, Bortles, Jameis, Trubisky, Brissett.

I’d have it: Wentz, Jameis, Watson, Garoppolo, Brissett, Trubisky, Mariota and Dak, Goff and Bortles
