Do-Or-Die Finale For Patrick Murray

December 30th, 2017

Significant long-range woes for Patrick Murray

Eighteen full-time NFL kickers are burying 50-yard-or-more field goals this season at a 70 percent rate or better.

Patrick Murray isn’t one of them.

And 13 of those 18 kickers are 80 percent or better from the 50-plus range. Obviously, that doesn’t include Murray.

The Tampa Bay kicker is 2-for-5 from that distance (unacceptable) and 3-of-4 from 40-plus (acceptable).

Simply stated: Murray really needs a strong game Sunday against the Saints. A bad game should cost him his job.

Bucs fans — and Joe — are sick and tired of having second-rate kickers. It’s nearing the pass-rush-level mess on the personnel front.

Joe likes Murray and is rooting for him. But the Bucs need better from their kicker. Immediately.

Joe seriously??? Murray is the least of our problems. The fact we are going to suck for the foreseeable future is what really needs to be addressed.
Joe is really sick and tired of the whole “least of our problems” line. A problem is a problem. Murray’s long-range woes are a problem. Why can’t we have a kicker who’s a top-10 kicker?–Joe

  2. Hodad Says:

Yeah, let’s blame the kicker instead of the jack wagon who traded up to draft one in the second round! It’s all Murray’s fault we’re kicking fifty yarders instead of extra points! You’re amazing Joe.
Might want to re-read what’s here. Anyway, Joe and every person with two eyeballs know the front office has screwed up the kicker position for years. That’s like being made at Joe for not saying the sun is bright.–Joe

  3. Chris Says:

Probably shpuld draft the other Aguayo with the 5th pick, Nole fans would be jubilant.

  4. Kalind Says:

Good point Chris, hyperbole is def your forte…

  5. Nutterbuccer Says:

before the last few weeks MURRAY was just fine. Yea he has missed a few game winners or ties. However the one against the falcons, isn’t all on him. The team had to be rushed onto the field due to bad play management and a special.teams.coach that for some reason still had to gather his players together in the final seconds and rush them to the field instead of being ready to go. MURRAY hasn’t missed an extra point either which is huge. I’m ok with riding MURRAY into next season. Let’s stop. Hit the trenches hard in free agency/draft and another corner and this team should be just fine. If not everyone is fired and we restart once again.

Peace happy New Year ….draft chubb

  6. JonBuc Says:

May as well keep the mediocre Murray…clutch under zero pressure…yet the Lil’ duffer whiffs from 50 + and/or game on the line. Just like this season, he should be able to secure a Top 5 pick when we need it the most in 2018. While the Bucs are at it..keep Martin, Saggy and bring back VJax at 10 mil.

  7. Lamarcus Says:

Murray was good. WTF happen? Surely unreliable last 2 games. In the clutch. That’s unacceptable. We are curse w kickers

  8. Lamarcus Says:

I like Murray but Joe is right and Murray kinda cost us 2 overtime opportunities in back to back weeks

  9. Buc believer Says:

I guess Joe for the same reason we can’t have a a DT who averages more than 5 sacks a year and is paid 100 million dollars but everyone makes excuses for… “oh he is double teamed every snap or oh he doesn’t have any line help.” BS how about we call it like it is?? But we will get the old line “you just don’t understand football”.

  10. Hodad Says:

If Murray makes that fifty yarder, the Pants still tie the game. You think we come out on top in overtime? Murray wasn’t the only kicker available, Licht chose him like he chose Berto, and Folks. Let’s put the blame where it belongs in that regard on Licht. Let’s put the blame for settling for field goals where it belongs with can’t call a scoring play in the redzone Koetter. Let’s get a new kicker, problem solved we’d be 12-4!!

  11. R.O. Says:

What’s the league median for > 50 yds? 50%? The problem with Murray is his weak kickoffs!! Said it many times!

  12. mark2001 Says:

Time to draft another one… I’m sure at least one good one would be available in the second round. But seriously…if the Glazer’s “encouraged” Licht to draft Hamburgler Aguayo in the second round, they aren’t a the least of the Bucs problem…they are the biggest of the Bucs problem.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I too, like Murray…but in less it’s by design, his kickoffs are weak mostly just reaching the goal line…..we just had one of them run back although generally our coverage has been average.
I’m sure the goal is to improve at every positon.
At this point the QB, LB, WR & TE, P are the only positions I think we are set.

There is a lot of room for improvement including the Kicker.

  14. cmurda Says:

I agree with Joe. Murray missing the tying FG against ATL was borderline understandable. The miss against Car from like 49 was worrying. If Murray can’t prove reliable from 45 and up, that’s not going to cut it. These merry-go-rounds on the kicking and defensive line fronts will hopefully end by this draft and offseason.

If Murray makes that fifty yarder, the Pants still tie the game. You think we come out on top in overtime?

@ Hodad….I respectfully disagree…at least somewhat. That whiffed kick took all the air outta the Bucs balloon. Panthers got it beyond their own 40 with a Buc defense deflated ( no puns intended ). Then again…a light hitting Murray kickoff after the would be made FG may have lead to another TD return. At least Murray kept the Top 5 ( pick alive ).

  16. AlteredEgo Says:

panties still in a wad over the Koetter keep….

  17. Buccaneer Bill Says:

Murray will certainly have competition next year. He’ll need to show improvement with his long range FGAs and kickoffs. Typically, there are 10-20 new players every year. Next year won’t be any different.

  18. Reach87 Says:

Buc believer using the murray article to throw jabs at arguably our best defensive player, multiple pro bowl selection (consecutively). Moronic.

  19. The Anomaly Says:

    Licht is a great GM.

    /sarcasm

  20. JonBuc Says:

While AlteredEggo’s ( Buccaneer Orange ) thong stays neatly in place, many of us are not thrilled to see Koetter bumble on the sidelines with his bifocals…trying to pick a read zone play from his play sheet doubling as a Denny’s menu. But hey…continuity…right?!

  21. BuccLuck Says:

Couldn’t agree more Joe. Murray has consistently had issues with his kicking strength. It shows on field goals over 40yds and definitely on kickoffs. The kickoff was moved up and an extraordinarily high number of kickoffs result in touchbacks yet Murray can only muster up enough strength to ge the ball to the 10 or 5 yd line. That’s not good. This goes all the way back to Matt Bryant. He should have never been allowed to leave Tampa.

  22. RaviMbucs Says:

Matt Bryant released after 2008 so was Gruden. Chucky curse and Matt Bryant Curse. Nuff said

  23. Reach87 Says:

As bad as it hurts you, mccoy is and has been top 3 in his position over the last 6 years. In the league. With 31 other teams. Period. You are worth what people are willing to pay you. Why tear down someone on your team at every opportunity? Go watch little league and start to get a sense for what teamwork and leadership are all about…you appear to need that. Staying on script, I’m betting Murray does his job this week. Go Bucs!

  24. Broy34 Says:

I for one am not worried about Murray one iota. Just not worried. Yes he missed a couple kicks. He’s been fine. And sorry but it is the LEAST of worries and he will return next year I bet

  25. Dewey Selmon Says:

I’m with Joe on this. Dirk just said yesterday that everyone will be evaluated at the end of the year. Murray’s kickoffs are short also, costing us a kickoff return last week. Rodgers was catching our returns 8 yards deep if it didn’t go thru the end zone.

  26. Lakeland Says:

Why are they attempting so many Field Goals? I thought Dirk Koetter had this high-flying offense in gear. If they could actually score touchdowns, this wouldn’t be an issue. Patrick Murray has made 18-22 FG and 19-19 PAT. The problem isn’t Murray kicking, the problem is the Bucs inability to score touchdowns.

  27. JabooBuc Says:

Joe, bit of a small sample size to say his his performance has been unacceptable. If he makes one of the 50+ kicks he’s at 60% which i believe would be above average. Also, keep in mind he’s kicking outdoors at sea level which does make a difference.

I honestly think he’s been a good reliable kicker since added to the roster. He’s only missed 4 of 22 attempts with 3 of those over 50. I’ll take that every year if we can get it.

  28. dexterOHMAN Says:

Is Mike Smith going to return along with Dirk?

  29. bucs_365 Says:

Well, at least he’s more reliable than the other guys we’ve had recently. If he can’t iron out the 50+ issue, we need to look for an upgrade.

    Offseason priorities in rough order:
DE, CB, RB, DT, OL (all positions could use help), K

We could live with Murray for another year if we can’t find someone better.

I’m sick and tired of rooting for a team that sucks.

I’m sick and tired of people blaming the kicker for sucking.

I’m sick and tired of people not understanding that having Sarasota’s QB fumbling profusely, no matter how many yards he’s throwing for, is a much bigger problem than a kicker missing a couple of 50+ yard FGs.

  31. Jarod Lauderdale Says:

If we score , I’m sure he can make extra points..wanna score more points ? Draft the man about to play Washington at 4 PM

  32. Mike Johnson Says:

When you want something to happen really bad? Usually it does not. I want the Bucs to Lose to the Saints Sunday. 1st time I’ve ever said that. Yes, I’ve said I know they will lose before. But I really want them to lose tmw. Now just watch and see…them Win! We need to secure that 5th pick for a shot at Chubb. We win and fall all the way down to 9 or 10.

  33. Mike Johnson Says:

dexterOHMAN..Sadly. Coach Smith probably will return. He and Koetter are..joined at the hip. If the Glazers Don’t just say Smitty has to go? Dirks gonna probably reward him a..mechanized rocking chair..complete with snack and cup holder for his pressbox viewing.

  34. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Maybe if we had a Coordinator/ Play caller that could produce touchdown drives we wouldn’t need to worry about having an amazing kicker.

    Murray is solid.

  35. Gerald McRuud Says:

Matt Bryant in Tampa: 2 of 10 from 50+. Age 30-33
Matt Bryant in ATL: 31 of 40 from 50+. Age 34-42

    Just throwin that out there.

  36. Defense Rules Says:

Still stirring the pot, huh Joe? Murray was our kicker in 2014 … hit on 20-of-24 FGs attempted (83.3%) including 5-of-6 over 50 yards AND 31-of-31 extra points. Not that bad. His reward: our illustrious GM Licht fired him. In 2015, Licht brings in Brindza. who manages to hit on 6-of-12 FG attempts in 4 games AND makes only 6-of-8 extra point attempts. Wow … Impressive! So we grab Connor Barth to kick in the remaining 12 games who manages to hit on 23-of-28 FGs attempted (82.1%) including 3-of-5 over 50 yards AND 25-of-26 extra points. Not that bad. His reward: our illustrious GM Licht fired him. Brings in Aguayo who … aw heck, you know the result of that ridiculous escapade. So Licht brings in Nick Folk who promptly goes 6-for-11 (54.5%). Funny story there … NOT. So we bring BACK Patrick Murray who has a decent 2017 season for us, hitting on 18-of-22 FGs attempts (81.8%) and making 19-of-19 extra point attempts. His reward: yup, Joes and probably GM Licht fire him.

    Yup, that’s our problem!

  37. feelthepewterpower Says:

Meh, 2 of 5 isn’t that far off from 3 of 4. You also have to factor in that kicking is volatile. Look at the same kickers kicking 80 percent beyond 50 last season…and compare it to this year. The percentage of kickers making 80 percent clip two seasons in a row is slim.

  38. tmaxcon Says:

have you taken hawaiian’s buc fans place as the lazy pos dt cancer93 agent????

best defender that is total garbage and you know damn well it is. just like his meaningless pro bowls are garbage. he is a quitter and horrible role model for kids and real men across the globe. the crying ice cream is a pathetic quitter and the most overrated buc in history. the undisputed face of the basement years is his legacy. if koetter has any hope of keeping his job he must rid the locker room of this career losing pos.

  39. Gerald McRuud Says:

So, NFL kickers are 55-60% from 50+. Murray is 7-11 from 50+ in 2 years here, 64%.

Murray is 13-13 on field goals under 40, and 19-19 on 37 yard extra points, so 32-32 under 40 this year. What a bum.

Joe, can I buy some pot from you?

1.Can’t keep his hand to him self.
2.Can’t throw a deep ball and hit a WR in stride.
    3.To many fumbles/int’s
    4.Holds the ball to long.

ROTFLMWAO!! Good one. Murray is the least of our problems right now. Let’s see..

We need defensive linemen (not GMC) and secondary help.
We need a backup QB who ain’t long in the tooth.
    Another DC??
DK needs to be put on valium on game day so he doesn’t freak when we get in the red zone.

    That covers it. Go Bucs!!

  43. William Walls Says:

I’d rather stick with Murray. It’s been quite a while since I’ve had to worry about whether PATs will make it through the uprights or not, and I like it.

  44. I Bleed Pewter and Red Says:

Tmax, I haven’t taken anyone’s place. I am and remain my own man. I also know that an article about the kicker that turns into the same fact-less poison against arguably our best defender; league-anointed top three DT in the game over the last six years is a moronic move. As my own man, I call out that type of garbage wherever I see it, which is turning out to be every single time you post. You are a proven moron with no understanding of football at any level, teamwork, leadership or common decency. Post more poisonous, hateful, non-factual garbage and you’ll get more of the same. I am not your problem…your classless, clueless posts are your problem. I’ll continue to call you out as long as Joe allows it. Go Bucs!

  50. 941bucsfan Says:

Murray is the least of yall worries huh?? Regardless if we are scoring 6 or not. The guy needs to make it from 50+. We couldve won the last 2 games if he hits what he is SUPPOSED to make. You can blame the loss on the other 57 minutes all you want, but we still had a shot 2 games in a row. Why carry a kicker if 50 yard field goals are the least of your concerns. Jack wagon fans

  51. Reach87 Says:

Tmax, ps…very few Americans would want a person who calls a man “she” or “pos” speaking about role modeling for kids. Once again your own posts display you as a moron. Hilarious! Thanks for that! Funny but als sad. Keep em coming! Go Bucs!

  53. DB55 Says:

Let’s remember k short made the last play of the game a sack to secure the win meanwhile capt cupcakes once again let the offense ram the ball done his throat as usual. Tutti frutti ice pop has no gag reflex.

  54. OneBucPerson Says:

I’m hoping the Bucs can either grab Michael Badgley from Miami in the 7th or sign him as an undrafted free agent.

  55. JimmyJack Says:

The thing that concerns me is that Murray has missed every pressure kick we have needed from him.

If your kicker can’t perform in the clutch you have a big problem. He is also awful on kickoffs…..defining room for improvement from that position.

Unfortunately our GM don’t have any answers to this problem we have had for over five years now.

Also, I’m not sure the point of many of you fans saying it’s not our biggest problem…..Nobody is arguing that is but it is a problem. And you stats don’t tell otherwise when you look at kicking stats across the league. Good kickers in this league are putting up amazing numbers…….Joe posted it…..18 are 70%+ from long range…….So our kicker is automatic from short-intermediate range. Guess what? That’s nothing special so don’t freaking kid yourselves.

  56. Lakeland Says:

The Bucs PK (Patrick Murray) is 2-5 on 50+ yards Field Goals.

The offense is 2-915 on 50+ offensive plays

Rookie Chris Godwin had a 70 yard catch and run

Rookie O.J Howard had a 58 yard catch and run

The Bucs don’t have a RB with a 50+ yard run

But let’s single out the Kicker

915 offensive plays and 2 plays of 50+

  57. Lakeland Says:

DeSean Jackson made a living on 50+ yards plays. When he got here all that changed. This franchise will hold back the best of players.

  58. JimmyJack Says:

Lakeland. I don’t think having a discussion about our kicker necessarily means anybody is singling him out as the sole, or even biggest, problem.

It’s just a valid point about one of our many many problems.

  59. DB55 Says:

    Lake

That’s on DeSean. He’s had ample opportunity to make 50+ plays but apparently unless the ball is perfectly thrown he won’t make a play. I got film, if your interested I’ll post the plays. Lmk.

  60. NFLNut Says:

Are we sure he didn’t miss some of those on purpose … TANK!

  61. DB55 Says:

    Nflnut

Spill the beans girl. Spill them. Still waiting for your opinion on ice cream McIceCream Tutti frutti crybaby rainbow sprinkles.

  62. JimmyJack Says:

Yeah DB55…..I’ve seen a few plays where I have questioned Jackson’s effort too.

I’ve also noticed that throughtout his career many of his huge plays came off of well designed plays where was in wide open field with no defenders in site.

He has had some separation on a few plays here but for the most part he was well defended with a small window of opportunity. To be fair Winston missed the windows that were there but it’s a fact that our vertical passing game does not fool anybody……much like our rushing game.

  63. JimmyJack Says:

Hahaha he missed them on purpose……..I’m supposted to be laughing at that, right?

  64. DB55 Says:

I remember two in particular. One of his first plays a bomb to the front left corner of the endzone the ball hit him center chest he caught the pass but took the biggest step back and out of the end zone that I’ve ever seen. Absolutely no attempt to stay in bounds.

The second I believe was his last pass of the season. He’s got a step on the defender. Jaboo throws an almost perfect pass. The ball literally fell about a half inch away from his foot yet DeSean made zero effort to catch the pass he barely stretched out his arms. If he dives or extends his fckn arms that ball hits him in the hands and he’s in the endzone. But NOOOOOO.

To me Weapons for Winston was a complete waste conjured up by the idiots in the TB sports media. Winston excels with udfa rooks like hump, bobo, Brate, and cross.

  65. Lakeland Says:

In 2012 the Bucs had 12 plays of 50+ yards on offense.

  66. USFBUC Says:

All I know is we better be missing them on purpose in this last game, if th Bucs go out and try to win this last game it will show just how dumb the people running the team really are

  67. USFBUC Says:

Also while I understand that the argument here isn’t that the kicker is a big issue I would rather them focus on DL, OL, CB, S, and RB

  68. Tbbucs3 Says:

Murray is fine, Joe. No team is perfect. Especially after the Agauyo mess the Bucs should be holding on to Murray. Not every team has a Justin Tucker .

  69. NFLNut Says:

    DB55,

I did a huge write-up on my thoughts on GMC after you asked me about him last time … I can’t remember the thread though but it’s in there 🙂

  70. NFLNut Says:

#Weapons4Winston worked in that it got him OJ and Godwin … those are guys I think he will thrive with as their both big-bodied receivers and young enough to grow with Jameis … the DJax signing was a waste and that money should have went to Calais Campbell!

  71. DB55 Says:

I’m still torn about OJ. He a beast Jimmy graham 2.0 if not better but something tells me we should have drafted Cook. Maybe it’s the Seminole in me idk. Plus the fact Koetter don’t use OJ especially in the red zone which is just retarded if you ask me but again wtfdik.

  72. DB55 Says:

As for Godwin he should be the #2 guy next yr. him and Evans are Jones and sanu 2.0. Godwin a baller.

  73. USFBUC Says:

DB55 – I agree, we have our WRs covered for next year so it’s time to trade Jackson maybe we get a third rounder for him. TE is set too, but like you said and I think most Bucs fans wished – we need to use them more. We also have Bobo on the team who I think can be a lot like Humphries – not a starter but a really reliable backup.

  74. USFBUC Says:

I have my fingers crossed for Bell at RB. The Steelers can’t pay him what he wants as they are already over the cap for next season. People have said the Browns will do crazy stuff with their money but they refused to over pay for Pryor last year and he was like a hometown hero.

  75. Mg Says:

Draft a kicker in the second round.

  76. Buc believer Says:

@Reach87 pro bowls are simply an overrated popularity contest. You should know that and I know it as well as does everyone else. Please! The guy cries on the bench!!! Our BEST lineman is crying!!! Are you F..,ing serious!!!!

  77. NFLNut Says:

    ******************

    DB55,

The ONLY years I rooted for the Seminoles was 2013-14 when Jameis was there as I’ve followed that kid since high school and just believe in his future so strongly, so I’m no “Nole fan” per se … BUT … everyone here knows I LOVE DALVIN COOK’s game and desperately wanted the Bucs to draft him. However, when O.J. slipped to #19 even I was screaming at my tv “take O.J., take O.J.” … now, when the first round was ending I was hoping the Bucs would have traded back up into that #32 slot to take Dalvin, but it didn’t happen and that bummed me out, though Justin Evans does look solid, Godwin looks like a future star and Beckwith is a nasty LB, so I think Licht got an A+ on last year’s draft.

Now, I do think we probably would have been a better team this year with Dalvin instead of O.J., but I just think that O.J. can give us 10+ years of Pro Bowl level play as both a blocker and receiver, while Dalvin may have a short career, and even if he doesn’t, may only have 5-6 good years, so I’m thrilled with the O.J. pick.

Of course, I would SCREAM FOR JOY if we drafted SAQUON BARKLEY this year, as, as much as we need a DE, I’d rather see us sign one or two of those in free agency and draft Saquon then sign a RB like Isaiah Crowell in free agency and draft a DE … to me Saquon is “Marshall Faulk with power” and I just love that kid!

    ******************

  78. Pickgrin Says:

“He’s only missed 4 of 22 attempts with 3 of those over 50. I’ll take that every year if we can get it.”

    Agreed

  79. Reach87 Says:

DB55 your point is arguable IMO. Got over 6 years of tape on McCoy and less on short, but he’s undoubtedly impressive. I love short and the entire Panther Defense front seven. But he’s not on my team so I’m not going to use short to tear down the guy who is On my team. The guy who is is also not a quitter, a she, or a POS. Go Bucs!

  80. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

While kicker is the last thing I’m worried about considering our defensive needs, I see nothing wrong with competition at the position.

But Murray has been a breath of fresh air. He makes a wide majority of his field goals. People just choose to remember the very few that he misses.

I have no desire to revisit the pain of stressing over 25 yard missed field goals.

  81. mark2001 Says:

No problem… UW Madison looks to have a great future, and upheld the honor of Wisconsin. Big Ten 7-0 in the bowls with Michigan chomping at the bit to make it 8-0 in bowl play this year. At least there is always college football.

    Its actually 6+ sacks.

And if you take away the first 2 years in which he was on IR, it is 7.3 sacks per year.

    But nice try, hater.

  83. mark2001 Says:

BTW…you want to see a great young D coordinator, look at UW Madison. Last night, when they fell behind against Miami 14-3, he circled them around, pumped them up and reminded them who they are, and sent them out to play D like UW Madison plays Defense. And they did, against a fast and explosive Miami team whose QB could deliver the ball last night. That, my friends, is coaching,
