“Eliminate Communication Errors”

November 1st, 2017

Bucs are talking

It seems the communication bug found its way back into the Bucs defense.

Three Bucs were asked the same question following Sunday’s 17-3 beating at the hands of the Panthers, a game in which the Tampa Bay defense was significantly improved.

Joe asked Gerald McCoy what accounted for the improvement, and No. 93 said run defense, gap integrity and better tackling.

Joe asked Kwon Alexander the same thing, and Kwon went right to improved communication. Ok. Joe didn’t think much of that until Kendall Beckwith was asked the same question on the Buccaneers Radio Network on Monday. Beckwith struggled for a quick answer, but then said more consistency and the ability to “eliminate communication errors” are key to the improvement.

Two starting linebackers talking about communication lapses, including the guy (Kwon) who wears the helmet wired to the defensive coordinator?

That got Joe’s attention.

Last year, when the Bucs defense was brutal en route to a 3-5 record, major communication issues were blamed. And then, almost magically, they were fixed at the bye week and the Bucs closed the season 6-2.

This year, the problems are much more than communication (what pass rush?), but Joe’s wondering what kind of role communication is playing and why those problems are still around in Year 2 of a defensive system.

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

just look at KA58 being out!!!!! and that hurts “communication”!!!! As Kwon gets adjust back, the defense will look more like it did last Sunday!!!! GMC is doing his own thing anyways!!!! That is why during his rush to disrupt and get up the field, he leaves a huge hole in his rush lane!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. derrickbrooksforGM Says:

@AlteredEgo LMAO. Pfffft we heard this last year. Bad teams make the same mistakes over and over again… as Buc fans we see this all too faking often.

  4. derrickbrooksforGM Says:

@The Buc Realist That cracks me up. GMC leaves that huge wake and RB’s just cruise right up it. Kwon get’s sealed off way too often doesn’t beat his block enough.

  5. Lamarcus Says:

I see other lineman communicate on other teams. But our lovely gmc just doesn’t communicate. Or at least it is not notice by me

Gmc is a leader by example but DAMN he is too literally with it.

  6. derrickbrooksforGM Says:

So when the Saints blow them up this week what’s the excuse going to be then? You can’t really be thinking the bucs holding the Panthers to 17 points was a good thing really? That offense is horrible. 17 points might as well be 30 points.

  7. LakeLand Says:

Blah, blah, blah, Let’s see them communicate against the Saints balance offense.

  8. LakeLand Says:

The Carolina Panthers can’t run the ball, they can’t pass the ball. The Bucs defense will be playing a totally different team this week. If they can stop the Saints running game and passing game, then they get props from me.

  9. Mike Johnson Says:

Shut up Buc Realist. You along with about 8 other here (I remember their handles), were praising Koetter as the 2nd coming of the immaculate conception about a yr and a half ago. You are the worst pom pom cheerlady here!

  10. Bird Says:

Everyone Knows the big holes on defense , specifically the dline lack of pressure

Players aren’t going to admit how bad other players are playing So of course they will give the common excuses we always here.

  11. AlteredEgo Says:

hmmm…they don’t seem to have a communication problem when it comes to taking a knee…..

WHERE WAS THIS EXCUSE IN 2015!!!!!….when we lost the last 4 games you said it was because of lovie and his defense….now we have lost 4 straight with smitty, the defense is worse than ever and NOW you want to blame communication!!!!….BS….

@mike Johnson, hit it on the head!!!!…..you praised this staff and claimed they were so much better and they would get this team to the next level….now you have to eat crow!!!!…this staff is incompetent and soft….

  14. DB55 Says:

    Communication issues =

Kwon: gmc stop playing like a beach.

Gmc: I’m the greatest dt in the league. I lead all DTs in sacks for the last 8 years I’m great just listen to Steve dudemig on the radio he’ll tell you how great I am. Now leave me alone. I don’t like getting hit. I’ll hug this dude and you make the tackle Kwon.

Kwon: Coach Smith gmc acting like a beach again put in Clint.

Smith: who’s Clint? Wait I think gmc is the greatest dt to ever play the game. He has the most sacks of any dt in the last 8 years. Even though he

813bucboi, Scott Reynolds was calling for Lovie job after a one point loss to the Redskins. And they was 2-4 at the time. Here is some of his pleads to the Glazers to fire Lovie.

Smith Should Be Fired After The Collapse At The Capital
Posted By: Scott Reynolds on: October 26, 2015
    I’ve seen enough.
    I know you have.
Let’s hope the Glazers have seen enough, too, and decide to finish the Lovie Smith era – and quickly.
Why does Smith have an aversion to scoring points prior to halftime? He has acknowledged that he doesn’t want anything bad to happen right before the half, but that line of thinking prevents anything good from happening, too.
Forget the notion that Smith should get a pass this year because he has a rookie quarterback. Winston hasn’t played like a rookie in half of the team’s games, and certainly played great in a winnable game at Washington on Sunday.
I wonder if energetic offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter could inject more life into the Buccaneers as an interim head coach than the stoic Smith has, and get this team to be more aggressive. I’d like to see him have the chance.
The problem isn’t necessarily the talent. The Bucs scouting department has had two very good drafts that have produced seven starters, and has unearthed some gems in young, undrafted defensive ends Jacquies Smith and Howard Jones, who have combined for seven sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries for touchdowns, in addition to undrafted wide receiver Donteea Dye, who caught a touchdown on his first NFL reception at Washington. General manager Jason Licht and pro personnel director Jon Robinson need to stay put and keep acquiring talent.

Scott Reynolds is calling for the man job, after a 2-4 start, with a rookie QB

  16. 813bucboi Says:

    @LAKELAND…WOW….

now were 2-5 with a veteran franchise qb , more talent and people want to give dirk time…..

but im happy to hear scott say what ive been thinking all along….Winston looked great in 2015 under lovie….he looks lost this year…

Winston hasn’t played like a rookie in half of the team’s games,

he look like a rookie in every game this year accept 3 games….GO BUCS!!!!

Mike Johnson is still butthurt about Lovie, the coach with the worst record in Bucs history!

  18. SOEbuc Says:

Make a trade where we can get an extra number one and two rounders: DE, DE, DT, CB. If third rounder still there: OT or CB.

  19. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

Hey Joe remember Tandy intercepting Brees last year to seal the game and give the Bucs the win. Tell Smith and Kotter to play him this year and the same results will happen again. Didn’t see the field last weekend at Safety. Hasn’t seen the field in all 5 losses of any signifigance. Are they stupid or what the hell is going on? Keith has given that orginazation 6 long years. He deserves more respect than rotting on the side lines. Hell trade him if they aren’t going to play him. Surely Dirk the Quirk and Smitty aren’t going to play Ward cause he’s mad and makes 3 Million a year the rest of the season instead of Tandy. He’s already proven they can win with him. They have also seen that they lose when he’s on the sideline. Tell Kotter to call me and I will tell him. MY number is 867-5309…..

  20. FortMyersDave Says:

Lakeland: gagging a 24-0 lead is grounds for questioning the coach, especially when the coach was 2-4 after the L. I bet you would be at the front of the line calling for Koetter’s head if he somehow squandered a 24 point lead to a club that was inept as the 2015 Skins such as the Jets or Fins…. Cards coach would have been in the hot seat if the Bucs managed to beat them in the desert, did not happen as Coach K made some rather foolish decisions before halftime and concerning chasing 2 pointers…. Just saying that Lovie deserved all he got after that pathetic loss and Koetter deserves the same after losing 4 in a row where 3 at least 2 of the games were very winnable.

Tandyman: as far as the Sainst game: yeah throw some wrinkles in; I am sure the saints have the Bucs game plan already covered as Koetter has done very little to adapt or react to what is thrown at him and the defenses have figured it out. Not sure what Smith can do with the D, seems like a lost cause: maybe do a Dolphin and go dirty like they did in Baltimore but that did not work out too well for the Fins: and Miami is one of the few teams Tampa COULD beat right now but I would not bet on it!

And to the Lovie lovers: just look how he is doing at the Illini: still has a donut in the Big 10 last I saw….
