Dirk Koetter Talks About Stunning Blitz Failure

Talks blitzing failures

Your Tampa Bay Buccaneers sent the dogs at Matt Ryan several times today and those dogs couldn’t find the bone.

Those repeated blitzes failed at a stunning rate, Dirk Koetter detailed in his news conference.

Per Koetter’s math off the cuff, Koetter said the Bucs went “zero coverage” times at least eight times. As he translated, that means Tampa Bay sent one more blitzer than the Falcons had blockers every time they went “zero.” Yet the Bucs couldn’t get a sack.

That’s almost a comedy routine right there. Matt Ryan did show some escapability, to be fair, but the Bucs just have to better than that on the blitz.

You can’t fault Mike Smith for being conservative. But perhaps we saw today why he had been with blitzes through much of this season.

While it’s true we didn’t get sacks, those blitzes resulted in several poorly thrown balls. That’s better than our usual results when rushing 4.

  2. Steve in Mad Beach Says:

If you blitz, then you can’t give up a 15 yard cushion to the WR’s

I wonder if Gruden would keep him on as Quality Control Coach.

ya I didnt think it was enough. Discussing one cover zero isnt a pattern. Not enough blitzing.

    We SUCK!!!

Koetter is being revisionist. They might not have yielded sacks but they did yield errant throws. Sitting back in soft zones worked soooo much better.

  7. JWBUCS Says:

Personally, I would like to see Todd Monken take over the play calling at Dirk’s request…. Then, Mike Smith needs to explain what he was doing different last year when the team Won 5 games straight?

  8. Doctor Stroud Says:

Wow! What a breath of fresh air!

  9. tnew Says:

The problem, with this entire staff, is highlighted here. They are so afraid to give up a big play or commit turnovers, they play not to lose, until the games are out of hand and they are forced to become aggressive. Then its just a mad scramble towards respectability.

  10. Season Is Over Says:

Dirk “We are done by Halloween” Koetter brought back the head scratching thousand yard stare in his press conference. Remember when he was all condescending after the garbage wins over garbage teams.

  11. TonyC Says:

How can this fan base put up with such inept coaching and player management/evaluation. Why are we the perpetual whipping boys of the NFC South? It’s time for radical change.

  12. not there yet Says:

Wow he actually did what the Joe’s wanted and blitzed like crazy. One again McCoy was invisible, he’s not your best players, your best players are linebackers but won’t go 3-4 because of McCoy. There are so many reasons they should get fired it’s unreal. The only reason for dirk keeping his job at this point is continuity nonsense

  13. Eric Says:

The most talented buc team in years…..

  14. Clw JB Says:

True D showed up again, outmanned and busted coverages – playing 12 yds off On 3 rd n 8 and backing up 10 steps – bad throws and horrible play calling in key situations – passing up points again – just a horrible team overall

  15. 813bucboi Says:

This staff is incompetent!!!…. Simple as that!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  16. Bucs14 Says:

Blitzing would be fine if our CB could play man, be up on the line and not 10 yards off the ball at snap.

  17. Ed Says:

Sure looked to me when David and Alexander were coming in from the edges that Ryan was backing up and releasing the ball before he could step into it. There were 2 plays that the LB blitz made Ryan errant, otherwise Matt was perfect when there was no pressure. Like announcer said “if you play 12 yards off, its pitch and catch all day for Atlanta”. Thats what we do, we play the soft defense, I’m all in for coaches that believe in pressure, not passive “don’t give up the big play” (which they do anyway) D’s. Both Smith’s, Lovie and Mike play the same soft D.
