What Has Happened To Hargreaves?

October 16th, 2017

Terrible regression.

This is damning to a coaching staff.

Last year Vernon Hargreaves was a rookie cornerback. He was expected to make mistakes, and yes, he did. But he also made plays.

This year, it’s like he’s a totally different player. Hargreaves has terribly regressed and for a first round draft pick to go from being a competent rookie to incompetent in less than a year, it’s a bad look on a defensive coaching staff.

Hargreaves flashed as a ballhawk last year. This year? He’s lucky to be in the same TV screen as the receiver he’s supposed to cover.

It’s one thing if an undrafted free agent somehow or someway circles the drain. It’s quite another for a middle-round pick to suddenly look as lost as Joe at a bridal shower. But for a major investment like Hargreaves, the No. 12 overall pick last year, to fall off the face of the earth, let’s just say Joe is confident Team Glazer is asking very pointed questions about this. Or will.

Remember, the NFL is a business. Always has been and always will be. When a major investment like Hargreaves suddenly goes from decent to schlock this quickly, well, it’s not exactly good for someone’s job security.

    You suck Vernon “Marshmellow” Graves

  2. tmaxcon Says:

he was infected by the leader of the losing culture cancer93….

he was never going to succeed to small, too slow and has zero instincts. the clown celebrations just prove he fits in with the mentally weak leader of the losing culture. nobody can take the heart and drive to win from a player faster than cancer93

  3. Knucknbuc Says:

But see that’s where your wrong Joe bec vh3 was terrible last year. I believe he graded out as the worst corner in all of football. How he has played worse this year then last year is actually kind of amazing considering how much he sucked then. Idk who could be evaluated him as a first round talent. He was a slow small corner at Florida and guess what he’s a slow small corner in the NFL. Except his flaws stick out even more. That 2016 draft looks like absolute crap rn. Good job licht!

  4. D-Rome Says:

Well, if Lovie Smith “ruined” Jonthan Banks and Alterraun Verner would it be safe to say that Dirk Koetter and Mike Smith ruined Vernon Hargreaves? Does that same logic apply or is it different this time since the fans seem to like Koetter more?

On a side note I don’t think the Bucs have to worry about other teams trying to pry Mike Smith away from the organization anytime soon. The Bucs defense is playing without any nastiness which was also a problem for Mike Smith in Atlanta.

  5. Dexfields22 Says:

What’s funny is we forget that he’s a small slow corner. If I’m mistaken I think he ran a 4.6 at the combine..he don’t have long speed.Thats why he play so far off the WR.Never was a fan of the pick when we took him..a lot of fans wasn’t!!

  6. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Perhaps Hargreaves would be better, as a safety ?
I always felt we over drafted him.

  7. Wausa Says:

He’s the #97 ranked corner in the NFL this year.

If my math is correct 32 teams with 2 starting corners equals 64 starting corners and he is ranked 97th.

If the Bucs tried to trade him right now my guess is there is not one team that would give up a 7th round pick for him.

He is awful, but to make matters worst the Bucs coaches have them play a soft scheme that allows players to easily run their routes.

As a result we make a washed up Carson Palmer look unstoppable.

    No

    No

    No

    No

…….he was over-drafted by our wonderful GM.

I actually watched tape on Venon “Marshmellow” Graves before he was drafted and I never thought he was a 1st rd pick……I thought he was a solid 2nd rdr……

but my lord, he’s playing like 4th or 5th rd pick….just terrible and it looks like he has regressed from last year.

  9. Neil Says:

Would be better as a nickel? He has got to be rated like the worst in the league at everything, and as already noted – can’t even tackle anyone. See him one-on-one with AP and it’s a joke. See him one-on-one with any receiver ever and it’s a joke. I think what makes fans even more angered is that the one time he actually does his job he showboats and is cocky. Carson Palmer throws for 100% lol. My girlfriend who knows nothing about football saw some of the game and said “they pick on that little guy, #28 every play…they run right past him.” Maybe the multi-million dollar defensive coordinator can figure this out for once.

  10. Stud Says:

When the defense is designed to give receivers a free release on every snap and the team has Zero pass rush it’s hard to a judge a player who’s success is dependent on other parts of the d being competent

  11. Greg J Says:

Nothing…he was garbage last year and this year is just more of the same

  12. JonBuc Says:

The Bucs outsmarted the entire league by trading back for VH. How on earth did he last so long in the 1st round? And by trading back they had the “ammo” to trade up for Aguayo-no! Shocking that Licht’s Out hasn’t received an extension yet. They’ll have over pay to keep him a la Mike Smith last offseason.Laugh.out.Loud.

  13. theodore Says:

He just has to learn how to tackle.

  14. Tom Says:

    DITTO!

  15. DBS Says:

This is absolutely nothing new. Just Buccaneers Football. One bad player after another. They start out good then down they go.

  16. Ronteco Says:

He was a reach when we drafted him. I recall the moment we drafted him and just screamed “WHY??”” Kinda like that same scream whenever we drafted a freaking kicker. Anyways this is what I expected from Vernon. Gators is a soft team that produces soft b1tch football players. Too scared to tackle and too scared to get physical with receivers. Always playing 5 yards or more off the line like a b1tch. Licht has drafted multiple high pick busts. Glazers are to blame for constantly hiring incompetence in the front office and head coaches.

  17. LocalJoker Says:

Dudes a short nickel or slot back at best. Get Barber to mentor him and he may have a chance. Get CB Tavarrus McFadden in draft next year and never look back. And yes we will be picking in the top ten.

  18. Cobraboy Says:

Hargreaves is not the only one.

This is not that good of a team, O or D, and “leadership” is all mouth and not action.

Right now I don’t consider Winston in the top 50% of QB’s in the NFL.

  19. Svenson Says:

Hargreaves stats last year were horrendous. He was the most targeted CB in the league last year, gave up the most receptions (87) and the most yards (1271). I don’t think he has regressed, he is pretty much where he was last year. Everyone was banking on him improving, but he hasn’t. Corner is a nightmare position for the Bucs–34 year old URFA Grimes may not be on the team next year, VHIII, and a bunch of UDFAs. OJ Howard was an intriguing prospect, but CB was the biggest need on the team. I realize the pass rush doesn’t help, but it won’t erase the fact that Hargreaves cannot cover NFL wideouts. Too small to handle big physical guys (like Fitzgerald), too slow to cover fast guys (like Diggs).

  20. Capt.Tim Says:

He has never even been decent. He has always played poorly- and more and more teams are targeting him.

I posted here, that I hated the first two picks of that draft.
Hargreaves is too short, Too slow, and a me first attitute.
    Spence is a good player.
    As a LBer.
Too short and light for a DE.

Anf nothing Ive sern in two years has changed my mind

  21. Sirclicksalot Says:

Get a grip Joe! Nobody is losing his job over the Hargreaves pick expect maybe Vernon himself. Licht and staff have still done a lot right.

Well Rhonde Barber has said previously in various media outlets that Vernon “Marshmellow” Graves has the skillset

…………..but something far more vicious has infected him now, and now I think it’s all mental with him.

  23. Bucamania Says:

VH3 needs to sit down. For his sake. It’s embarrassing to watch. Don;t tell me Ryan Smith OR ANYONE can’t do better than him. The stats last week had him rated the worst CB in the NFL and then yesterday! What a disaster.

  25. Cobraboy Says:

No pass rush is what exposes Hargreaves.

The number of “lock down” CB’s in the NFL that are effective no matter what can be listed on one hand.

  26. James Walker Says:

    Didn’t Talib have a bad year 2?

  27. Supersam Says:

Zero pass rush is our biggest issue. But I’ll admit I’m getting tired of seeing Hargreaves celebrate after getting beat like a drum just cuz the receiver dropped the ball don’t mean you had him covered Vernon….

  28. I'm tired and 87 is right Says:

I still can’t believe how we didn’t address the pass rush in the offseason. That is what will get someone fired. Pretty damn obvious that was a big need from last season yet we did nothing.

  29. doolnutts Says:

I completely understand the frustration pointed at VH3…. The guy always seems out of place or not in position to make any play whatsoever…. BUT this DL is still garbage…. Spence is officially the new Bowers of the group… I love G- McCoy but it is the same old story… He is at times triple teamed it is amazing he makes a play at all. Regardless of any other needs we need to draft a first round DE if one drops to us.. PERIODDDD.

  30. Joe west Says:

I’ve been saying this since the draft and all you cry baby buc fans said give him time …. lol the guy should be out of the NFL

  31. mark2001 Says:

So would Gruden keep Smith? Frankly, I like Koetter. We have upgraded the O personnel, but does Jameis look any better than last year, but for fewer ints? Is the Offense really better? I’m not sure. Is the play calling and clock management better? Questionable. Time for this team to step up fast. You know how it goes. If they really start losing faith in Koetter and Smiths “systems”, it could go downhill fast.

  32. Greg Says:

Like the rest of the team I thought he played a lot better in the second half. Actually saw him press the receiver.

  33. mark2001 Says:

VH3? I’d count on him as a nickle corner for now, and draft another guy. If VH3 steps up, great. If not, we aren’t out in the wind.

  34. BucsFan90 Says:

Hargreaves was the 11th pick, Joe.

  38. Solinor Says:

I hate how on the very rare chance he actually makes a play, he showboats every time. Dude just because you make one play it’s not a cause to celebrate. Be humble man, just do your job and stop thinking you’re the best because you’re not!

  39. Bobby M. Says:

Hargreaves has Jonathan Banks written all over him….hyped for athleticism but consistently ineffective. If you invest in your DL consistently, you can salvage your secondary with avg players due to consistent pressure BUT the league is set up so that you cant salvage your DL with above avg corners. Its a pass happy league and teams HAVE to value DEs value almost as high as QBs. Look at the Texans….they have Watt yet they got Clowney with a high pick. That team is consistently in games because they get pressure on the QB. We are consistently playing from huge deficits because we built a team a round a QB that isn’t remotely ready and have zero priority on getting d-linemen.

  40. Svenson Says:

Solinor, to be fair, every guy in the league (and college) does that crap. Annoys the hell out of me.

  41. JJBucFan Says:

Again, this is on Mike Smith. He is the coach. If he doesn’t want VH3 playing 10-15 off the line, then YOU, Mike Smith< tell him to get his a$$ up and bump and run. Mike Smith runs a blitz once every 100 defensive plays and Hargreaves is 15 yards off so the hot route gains minimum of 10 yards (more usually because he misses the tackle). This is all on Smith. He should have benched him at halftime and put in anyone else. Teach him a lesson!!

wow, you actually went there with Ryan Smith

  46. Capt. Blighe Says:

He’s Terrible next year I would tell put on 20lbs and play safety. Because Tackling is the one thing he is decent at. All you Licht lovers need look in the mirror.
It was him who drafted VH3 Roberto McNichols Spence and he is also the reason we have no outside pass rush. Yes I know he hit on some midround picks but 1 first rounder and 2 seconds just in the last 2 years who are horrible players

  47. Svenson Says:

I don’t understand the criticism of throwing the ball down the field. The team that whoop’d us yesterday does it more than most any other team. Yeah Brady has dinked and dunked a bunch of his career. But they are leading the league in YPA this year. Oh yeah, Randy Moss also caught 23 TDs the year the Pats went undefeated in the regular season. They aired it out then too. Biggest issue in our passing game is that Winston has not been as decisive and he doesn’t get the ball out quick enough. Of course, he has more weapons chirping for the ball and a coach that keeps preaching low risk and not to make mistakes. Usually he gets in a groove later in the game, but he looks tentative early. At this point, just spread everyone out and let him sling it. Run game won’t open up until teams are reeling from the pass. Because right now they know we want to establish the run to take pressure of Winston. Instead, we are constantly in 3rd and long.

  48. Ben Says:

Nickel corner. Gotta be moved. He has done nothing to prove he can run with the best. Too slow. I’m not buying the too small nnonsense. Grimes is small. Barber was small. Revise small. They need to figure out what hargreaves is good at. Put him in the slot might be the best option for now. Give him a break from being lit up every game.

  49. '74 Bucs Fan Says:

“If you can ball, you can ball” VHG

    ummmmm… you can’t ball bro

  50. Eric Says:

When they let old man Peterson run up the middle untouched for a TD, the game was over.

GMC was turned so bad on the play he was facing the end zone when Peterson ran by him.

Yeah Hargreaves is an issue, but when you can’t even slow down simple running plays its over. Our lines were dominated.

  51. Buc believer Says:

the issue with Hargraves is he has been infected with the the Mccoy virus. Mccoy is a cancer that is content with mediocrity. as long as people see him being religious and a nice guy he is happy. Have Hargraves hang around Sapp and get some attitude!

  52. 813bucboi Says:

I agree with @joe….this is an indictment on this coaching staff….not only has VHG regressed but so has Winston…the coaches aren’t putting these players in position to win….

I don’t think we overdrafted him….I think he has all the skills to be a #1cb….but we’ve seen this before….d. penn wasn’t being coached right, went to Oakland and made the pro bowl…same with zuttah…same with m.bennett…same with mark barron….mason foster is playing well in DC…a.spence is a beast in the trenches for DET….dj swearinger is playing lights out in DC as well….even ASJ has come around…

AND ITS ALL BECAUSE OF COACHING!!!!….those coaches some how figured it out….the bucs are stuck trying to fit a square peg into a circle….these coaches are trash….GO BUCS!!!!

  53. Bucsfanman Says:

@813- Lovie is gone so it CANNOT be coaching! (sarcasm!)
Whether or not it’s coaching, he’s playing SCARED! With no pass-rush, he has been fully exposed. If we don’t get to the QB, you can expect to hear Hargreaves name as the likely toasted culprit.

  54. Svenson Says:

VHIII started as a nickel corner last year and go roasted. I know it is easy to say throw him at nickle, but I think he is worse there. Yeah, Ronde was slow and small, but he was also arguably a HOFer. I don’t think a position change is going to turn him into a stud. More time might, but so far he has not improved.

  55. Sauerpickle Says:

Tmax-you are about as dumb as they come for that attempt at blaming VH3 on GMac. It’s funny how you guys always try to blame him for every problem the Bucs face. He’s one of the only guys doing stuff and getting doubles while doing it and yet it’s always his fault. Haha… now let’s see. If you’re an opposing nfl team, explain to me why GMac would get some much attention if he’s such a loser? Buc fans can be some of dumbest I’ve ever seen. Only Buc fans go after the guy who does the most. Sheesh…

  56. Svenson Says:

Just to clarify my last point, VHIII started at nickel at the beginning of the year, when the D was trash also. They moved him outside exclusively after a few games.

  57. OneLove Says:

BAHAHAHAHA! I bet at the end of the season Joseph is going to blame Mike Smith for ruining VH3’s career just like Lovie ruined Jonathan Banks career (That still has to be one of the DUMBEST posts I have read in my entire life!)

  58. BucTrooper Says:

    “Gator.”

That’s it. That’s the whole post.

  59. SOEbuc Says:

    @rrsrq

I’d love to see Ryan Smith get a chance. He’s big and fast and has good hands. He’s been doing really well at getting down the field quickly on special teams making tackles on punts and kickoffs. Let’s just swap him and VH3 because VH3 is fast and his best/only quality is tackling.

  60. Kalind Says:

Shouldn’t have been drafted. There were wayyyy better CBs available. This turd is worthless

  61. Sauerpickle Says:

I could be wrong about this, but I kinda think the reason our line doesn’t get to the qb could also be that our corners play off so far that qbs have the time to find an open guy. I’ve been saying this for weeks now. Course your line needs to push to crash the pocket for qbs, but think about it. if you have corners playing off 7-10 yds that can’t keep up, of course they could get the ball out quicker. It doesn’t seem to be talked about much. That’s the one thing I kept hearing in the Minnesota game from the analysts. The release time for Case Keenum was super quick. Now why would that be? The receivers only need to do a quick slant or make a move. Of course a defender who doesn’t know the route coming up wouldn’t be able to hold it. I’m not making excuses for the line. Of course they could do better, but the release time for opposing qbs is something to be looked at as well.

  62. Rads Says:

    Can McClain play outside?

  63. jerseybuc Says:

He has the swag of a top corner without the talent. Bad combo. I felt from day one he was overdrafted. He has 37 targets this year and ONE pass defensed. He needs to be moved to nickle like yesterday, let Ryan Smith play the outside and see what he’s got.
I think what was evident yesterday was that the Bucs prepared for the 32nd team in the rushing and ignored the fact that with AP onboard they would change their approach. 8 yards deep was not what was on film for AZ all year. With AP that changed. Then we panicked. Coaches shouldn’t been aware of that and we should have been previewing Vikings film from last few years to prepare better. Team looked like they had their eyes closed for the first half. Glad I purchased $500 worth of tickets yesterday for the Panther game. Could have saved a few hundred by waiting til today I bet.

  64. unbelievable Says:

It’s almost like he was slow and undersized in college… and nothing has changed.

Never could have seen that coming.

  65. sorryitriggeredyou Says:

When there’s a pass rush VHIII is very good like 99% of the corners out there. He’s not Revis or Grimes by any means. If you know you can beat weak side corner cause you’re QB has a few hours to complete a pass then that’s what you do. Blame the lack of passrush AND sacks on his “regression”.

  66. sorryitriggeredyou Says:

Oh and I was a terrible corner in college I know what a bad corner looks like trust me :), VHIII is not a bad corner.

  67. Wewantgruden Says:

The head coach Is not a disciplinarian. He is afraid of his defensive coordinator and is almost as dumb as the general manager. Keep in mind that GM moved up to pick a kicker in the second round. Bring Jon Gruden back and make him the head coach and GM. He will clean up this hellhole called the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

  68. GenocideD Says:

    Deja Vu.
    Mark Barron?

Ninety three oooh ninety three your poison spreads like fire!!!
V h three oooh v h three you play off the receiver
V h three oooh v h three your not even a good defender
Mike smitty oooh mike smitty your defense is pathetic
Mike smitty oooh mike smitty watching you call plays gave me a headache

  70. DisappointedBuc Says:

The whole draft is a crapshoot. Just bench him and move on.

  71. sorryitriggeredyou Says:

@Q if you know your dline can’t get to the QB you would give as much cushion as possible too. If he gets destroyed one on one with OBJ LIKE 99% of the corners in the league would, then NO amount of cushion will suffice. OBJ will close that game in 3 seconds flat.

  72. Chris Says:

He’s terrible. I love the half ass fake Fitzgerald gave to the middle that turned him 360. Thats what relying on drafting in state players and listening to college homer fans gives you.Tgis ain’t 30 years agon when wr had the college players in state with the most athleticism. Lol 5’10 cb with 4.6 speed.

  73. ndog Says:

Whatever happened to being aggressive? I mean on offense and defense. This team always seems to be taking the punches instead of giving them out.

  74. firethecannons Says:

I think enough is enough–Hargreaves needs to sit the bench or be turned into a safety after loads of coaching. Ryan Smith is taller and deserves another chance with loads of coaching also . No more games lost as a result of depending on VH3.

  75. firethecannons Says:

Joe–could one of you guys ask Koetter or Mike Smith directly–“why is he so bad?” “what are your plans to fix it by next Sunday?” “If he does not improve then what are the consequences?”
How long is Koetter and Mike Smith going to let him loaf and lose games for us? Kid may have a mental health issue–last year he was miked up one game and man I remember coming away thinking he was a freak in a bad way. Maybe he need adderal–something like that could be the answer.

  76. Scottasuarus Says:

C’mom man! I definitely saw him about an inch away from the receiver, when they shot the field from the blimp.

  77. Destinjohnny Says:

    He was over drafted
    He has physical limitations

But there is zero pass rush.

  78. mike10 Says:

    2 things:

    1. Joe, can u get any quotes from VH3 on any of this?

    2. What does this say about Licht?… (again with that draft)

  79. Wes Says:

Not really sure why we spent a top 10 pick on a non-all star cornerback, to begin with.

  80. Q Says:

This team is a total disappointment….this team was built to win now….there needs to be serious arses on the line when this year is done…players and staff have been getting too much credit and respect before anything has been accomplished…paper champions ….its time to goreevaluate everyone something is not right at one buc…ita time to scrap the whole defense except for David and Alexander ….trade McCoy and his sorry as and heavy as contract secure the cap space that is if we don’t have a penalty on his huge contract and get players who want to play like a professional…build the offense around jameis and find a new offensive mind because it’s been inconsistent dog shat….we should be trending up not down…2-3 when we should be easily 4-1 ….its beyond past old now …yall can sit there and defend this pathetic defense …and players like McCoy

  81. WesTampaBuc Says:

    lol @ Winston “regressing”

He set a franchise record for passing yards through the first 4 games; pacing for his best season in terms of passing yards and YPA with no turnovers in 3 out of the 4 games.

And the only easy defense he’s faced was the Pats; who typically end up in the top 10 in defense by year end anyway; and they seem to be playing better the last few weeks. Not like they don’t have any talent on that side of the ball.

Giants/Vikings/Cards are all pretty elite pass defenses. Bears are mediocre but still a solid defense overall. He hasn’t had a cup cake matchup at all yet; and is working with a mostly new cast. But yeah he’s regressing let’s cut him and fire Koetter. FREAK OUT FREAK OUT

  86. SteelStudBuc Says:

I was higher on Jalen Ramsey coming into last year, but figured that Vernon had more pure ball skills and more production in college so I was still happy with the pick. I tried to remind myself that Ronde had a roller coaster ride his first 2 or 3 years before he became a blue-chip type player when looking back at VH3’s first year; NEVER would I have anticipated this. I mean, Holy S$#% this is bad, really quickly.

I think the only way to fix this guy is to tell him to press the receiver and play within the parameters set, or else. I get the feeling he doesn’t trust his safety help (sometimes I don’t blame him), and a lot of times he’s incredibly slow to react to a particular route pattern (for instance the long, left-sideline deep ball against Odell if I can remember, where he flipped his hips long after OBJ had committed likely because he was scared of the comeback.)

The combination of those two flaws are not only killing his play, but literally the entire team at this point. He’s getting smoked. If that’s what’s gonna happen, at least get beat being aggressive and trying to make a play.

What do we do in this situation? Do you try and make him more physical? Do you put him at nickel and have his speed be exposed even more so? Do you tell him to pack on 10-12 pounds and play a hybrid safety/slot run support role player?

    Perplexing.
