Time For Team Glazer & Jason Licht To Step Up

October 25th, 2017

Do the right thing

It’s time for Team Glazer and general manager Jason Licht to back up all the talk about love and deep respect for Tampa Bay fans and the rich, glory-days history of the organization.

A true Buccaneers icon deserves one hour of the team’s time — ASAP.

Joe’s talking about iconic Bucs defensive end Simeon Rice, a Hall of Fame caliber edge rusher who played at that level before he arrived in Tampa in 2001 — and when he was here with the Super Bowl team, and after Warren Sapp was with the Raiders.

Rice was a monster of his day and was universally known as an athletic freak completely devoted to his body, which began breaking down on the field in 2006.

Rice, now 43 years old, has been very vocal this week on social media. He’s ready to help the Bucs’ pass rush now, Rice says.

This should be a no-brainer. When one of your true icons calls, you answer the bell.

Rice is clearly in first-class physical condition. His fitness is no Photoshop job or video production trick; Rice was working with Bucs pass rushers during training camp and everyone saw his body at least looks the part.

Rice deserves a call from the Bucs and a workout with the team.

It’s that simple. Put the damn egos aside and honor a great who is making a reasonable request. The Bucs’ pass rush is brutal, worst in the NFL, and it just lost Noah Spence to injury. The Bucs also just signed a 33-year-old defensive end off the street.

Joe isn’t saying, “Sign Rice!” But he deserves a serious look. He’s earned it. And Bucs fans have earned it by suffering through year-after-year of an inadequate edge rush.

Let’s say Rice looks good. Maybe then tell him to train hard for two weeks, football-style training, and then come back for another assessment. Maybe, just maybe, it’s a special story. At worst, the Bucs respected one of their greats.

Joe will lose some respect for team officials if they think they’re too good to give Rice the courtesy of a workout. It’s the right thing to do on so many levels.

Make the call.

  1. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

Honestly at this point, what do we have to lose? Work him out and if he looks good sign him. He cant be any worse than what we produce now. I’d be stoked to see him take some snaps

  2. Lord Cornelius Says:

lol god has it really come to this? Where 43 year old Rice is our answer to replacing Rice lol

  3. Brian Says:

Please tell me this is a complete joke? If this is indeed serious, there is zero hope for you guys.

  4. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    I can’t believe what I just read.

  5. Tackleblockwin Says:

I’m all for it at this point. And I wouldn’t bet against him to lead the team in sacks by seasons end either.

  6. Destinjohnny Says:

Let’s get the band back together
    99/20/97/47/55
Mate put down the crack pipe

  7. AlteredEgo Says:

so…I can play too….#99 next to #93….maybe he can push him into the QB for 1/2 a sack

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Seriously Joe? A 43-year-old guy who’s been retired for what, 10 years, ‘deserves’ a tryout? Please tell me this has something to do with Halloween, a full moon … I’ll take anything. Heck, I’d even go along with ‘a belated April 1st’ at this point. Just as long as we all know you weren’t serious.

  9. IndyBucsFan Says:

Thank goddddd you have 0 authority over personnel decisions.

  10. J 2.0 Says:

Yeah this story is ridiculous. Rice is 43. It would be irresponsible to put him on the field or even entertain a tryout. I’m sure he is in great shape for a 43 year old, but that is much different than NFL shape. And don’t give me the Brady spiel. This is completely different. D-Linemen have hard impact every play.

  11. Broy34 Says:

Wow congrats joes. The little credibility that was had is now gone. Absolutely gone. I get it like the pass rush is bad. But a 43 year old so far out of game shape can simply not take the hits and grind. It would be a great story but a 43 year old pass rusher

    Doug isn’t coming back
    Corner is best depth
    Johnny manzie
    Dalvin cook in the 1st
Hargreaves still disappointing after his best game
    Kendell won’t play this year
    Simeon Rice Tryout

  12. Joe Says:

Most of you guys seem to not have read what is written here, but that would be very typical. –Joe

  13. Broy34 Says:

Joe you literally said rice deserves a look and you would look down on the team officials if they don’t. No way around that. That’s absolutely laughable

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Joe, you have truly lost it.

I can see bringing him in to interview for a coaching position, but not to play. And if you don’t intend on signing him, don’t bring him in.

    Come on, Joe. lol

  15. Kenny Says:

They will show Rice the same respect they showed Adrian Peterson. “Excuse me, who are you? You only want 3 mil? Who are you again? Thanks, but no thanks. We dont have time for this nonsense.”

  16. Bucsfan951 Says:

I want what ever you’re smoking!

  17. Kenny Says:

Honestly though, what do the Bucs have to lose? Can you seriously say anyone on the defensive line right now (other than the great McCoy) is better than Simeon Rice? Worse case scenario, hes bad, old, and cant take the hits… Which you can say about all of our linemen currently. Best case, he comes in and finishes the season with 4 sacks (and leads the team in that category) in the remaining 10 games.

  18. Bird Says:

We have become this desperate team. Wow Smh

  19. Stav Says:

And maybe Monte can come back and call the defense. Maybe Ronde can come back and coach Hargreaves up. Maybe Sapp can help McCoy be more like Sapp. While we’re at it, we should have had Gramatica come back to replace Folk. Finally, let’s replace Koetter with Gruden!

My god, can we stop living in the past. Nobody from the “Glory Days” is coming to rescue the team…..that includes 43 year-old, movie making, closet selling, D-Line coaching, HOF deserving, Bucs great Simeon Rice!

  20. ndog Says:

Why not, we should be, like every other team, looking everywhere for the best talent to help us win games. Joe said give him a look, I firmly believe half these guys they give tryouts too would not be any better than Rice if they got a shot. If he is better than anyone else they look at then sign him, why would any of you care one bit if this happened, it’s not like we could get any worse than no production!!!!

  21. Seminole Bill Says:

Joe – if I recall correctly, Simeon Rice’s abilities on the field deteriorated fairly rapidly in 2006. The Bucs released him, he was picked up by Denver, but they released him after 5-6 games. A 43 year-old DE is not the answer.

  22. bucs_365 Says:

How many 40 year old defensive lineman have played in the NFL? Probably about ZERO.

How many players have ever been away from the game for 9 or 10 years and come back to play? Probably about ZERO.

Does he deserve a look? Depends what you mean by deserve… If you mean that giving a guy a workout just for amusement, then sure, Simeon Rice is as deserving as any Bucs player from the past.

If you mean he deserves a look because he could still play… Then no. There’s no way. It’s a sad statement that Joe is fantasizing about past glories to try to imagine a current day pass rush.

But, if Jason Licht and Jay Hayes have half an hour to watch him go through a workout (including hitting sleds, testing agility, speed, and stamina) then go ahead. I seriously doubt it would amount to anything.

  23. Broy34 Says:

Bonzai – but but but you must not have read correctly what Joe wrote!

  24. Warrenfb12 Says:

They were above calling freeny. No chance they call Simeon

  25. Lord Cornelius Says:

On a positive note Football Outsiders has Jameis ranked 6th currently this year in their QB rankings.

Completion % up, YPA up, int % down. Basically improvement across the board.

We’d be 4-2 or 5-1 right now if our defense was average.

  26. Brian Says:

Rice “deserves a look”… Clearly you didnt read the article you wrote.

  27. NJBucsFan Says:

    Tapp is crap. Why not

  28. Bucsfanman Says:

@Joe- I get you bro! Given that he’s been snubbed by the HOF and that he IS the very symbol of our drought, it would be a “solid” by the organization, a way of saying, “Thank you!” and can you please, please help us.
We signed Tapp. So, WHY FREAKIN’ NOT?! What’s the worst that could happen?! We find out he can pass-rush at 43? He’s no worse than Will Gholston at rushing the passer?!
    Lighten up guys! Geez!

  29. Brian Says:

Tapp is not TEN YEARS RETIRED… not even same scenario. Cmon man

  30. ATLBucsfan Says:

Joe they are protecting Rice from himself. Regardless of his condition, he would be more susceptible to injury than producing sacks. Bring him in as a coach if they think it will help.

  31. Bucsfanman Says:

@Lord C- Thanks for the positive vibes! #6!

  32. Dewey Selmon Says:

Bring me back and I’ll call Lucious and see if he wants to comeback too.

  33. Defense Rules Says:

Y’all need to cut Joe some slack. He wants to win. He’s desperate. And desperate Joes write desperate things. And if per chance it worked out, remember “Maybe, just maybe, it’s a special story.” Nah.

One other (potentially more workable?) thought Joe. Right now 31 other teams have 10 players each (presumably) on their practice squads. If there were say 3 DLinemen on each PS, that’d be 93 DLinemen who could potentially be signed to our squad. Don’t know what the odds are of finding a ‘diamond in the rough’ there, but the odds have to be better than resurrecting a 43-year-old DE at this point. Even if his name is Simeon.

  34. ElioT Says:

    Wow…

    Just, wow…

  35. theodore Says:

Jeff Garcia is still in shape too, I bet. At least he could get the ball to Joey Galloway.

  36. Steven007 Says:

Broy34 I was going to say the same thing about the other site. A very nice break down of how teams play GMC. Sapp himself even broke it down in an earlier column. As for rice, I think it’s obvious that Joe now has his cannabis card and is indulging.

  37. Bucnjim Says:

Laughing stock of the entire NFL!

  38. Volbuc2 Says:

The most ridiculous thing I have ever read on here besides Joe begging for us to draft Johnny Football Manziel.

  39. Bucnjim Says:

You could bring Alstott back as RB and Pee Wee Herman to run the Public relations department.

  40. westernbuc Says:

    File this under “draft Manziel”

  41. westernbuc Says:

Favre can still sling it, we could upgrade our backup QB situation while we’re at it

  42. darin Says:

He would lead the team in sacks at years end. Of course it sounds ridiculous, until u watch this defense week after week. Then go out n sign tapp. Tapp never could play. Freeney was out there until yesterday. I just hope they dont sit back n rush 4 all day anymore, its almost unwatchable. Bout time to get the nfl ticket back just to not watch the favorite team. There is nothing to lose, sign rice and cut one of these guys that end up playing that nobodys ever heard of. We could line up 6 defensive lineman n get no pressure right now. The lbs dont need to be standing in the middle of tbe field watching all these passes get completed. Blitz em. Put tj ward in n blitz him. Send em all so we can not be chinese water tortured to death for 3 hrs every sunday!!!

Joe isn’t saying, “Sign Rice!” But he deserves a serious look.

Joe will lose some respect for team officials if they think they’re too good to give Rice the courtesy of a workout. It’s the right thing to do on so many levels.

It’s a respect and courtesy thing, I got it.

  45. The Buc Realist Says:

So called icons, don’t disrespect “Real” Buccaneer Icons on their way out the door!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a reason that there is a Statue of Coach Gruden at One Buc and in the ring of honor and S rice is just on social media!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  46. Buc50 Says:

I would say at least put him on the coaching staff. Signing him to play is whole different conversation.

  47. Broy34 Says:

Just saw a video explaining how the D is running stunts and what not where McCoy is told to move horizontal across the line instead of a straight rush where he’s taken out by 3 guys in a 3-3-5. Also the QB is finding zone gaps so quick there’s nothing Mccoy can do. We might wanna rethink the Mccoy bashing and pass rush bashing
Might want to look back at the Schiano era, McCoy ran a lot more stunts then — of all kinds — and had plenty of production. –Joe

  48. Syl Says:

Are you kidding me? This is as dumb as a statement as the idiots calling for Fitzpatrick of Jameis. They need to somehow switch to the 3-4 and go that path. Simeon Rice give me a break.

  49. Bucsfan107 Says:

At least he wants to play and make our team better why not work him out just to see ? If it fails we suck anyways but if it work it could be what we need to make a real run for a super bowl at least this year. As long as the offense doesn’t regress we should be competitive every game anyways. So why not?

  50. Chris Says:

But yet you guys think its not absurd to sign a guy that had half a sack, is 33, and has like20 career sacks in 12 years? Its funny the arrogance around here considering we have the worst d line in the NFL in the past 10 years.

  51. Tampabaybucfan Says:

While you’re at it…let’s give Brooks & Ronde another look…

Just make sure you have the proper injury waivers signed……

This may “Ensure” (the drink) a better defense……..

  52. Kobe Faker Says:

“Now I know I will never be banned for the stupid sh!t I post”

    Kobe Faker

  53. FireJasonLicht Says:

If Dion can can do it why not Rice especially if he still has the go off of the 1st step. probably better then any other DE on our roster. I agree its worth the look.

  54. NFLNut Says:

Wasn’t Greg Hardy a former Buc … that dude could easily still get 10 sacks a year … too bad he’s psycho

  55. Broy34 Says:

Look, the comment section is not here for you to misrepresent Joe or ascribe motives to Joe’s commentary. It’s that simple. Joe will not waste time babysitting those who choose to misrepresent. –Joe

  56. Broy34 Says:

And lastly I remember this very site complaining about no edge rush due to stunts. Which is extremely accurate. But it wasn’t quite this bad thanks to better coverage and better scheme. All they need is to play man, press the coverage which grimes and Hargreaves excel at and just blitz some linebackers. Not zone blitzes. You can’t find a team that does it and makes it work. It works even less with one safety that’s a 2nd round rookie trying to play center field. I’m telling you right now it’s the scheme. There’s enough talent in this defense to be middle of the road or better. It’s not the least talented defense in the league but it is the least productive. Mike Smith needs to adjust or needs to go. And if he thinks with a running qb that no blitz and soft zone coverage will work with Cam they will give up 500 yards atleast and 42 points. And that my friends will be the end of the Mike Smith era. It’s simple. Tell the guys to smack cam around and blitz until he is on the ground every other play

  57. Broy34 Says:

First of all Chris the word you were looking for is ignorance and you just defined it calling fans dumb because a 33 year old is smarter to sign than a 43 year old with a good track record. Wow this fan base seems to continue to amaze. Hey Joe might wanna write a new article quick

  58. Pit Says:

Broy it is clear you have an Agenda. Mr. Ice Cream can’t lead this team anywhere and Joe are fans like us and they are frustrated and in pain right now the same way we all are.
Btw Martin should have been cut because he sucks.

  59. Broy34 Says:

It’s clear I have an agenda? I have one want. That’s to win. What I’m saying is scheme goes a long way in the NFL. This is not the NBA. I want this team to win and believe they have division winning talent or better and believe we aren’t put in the position to win by defensive coaches. Please “Pit” tell me what my agenda is.

  60. bucs_365 Says:

I wonder if Booker Reese is keeping himself in shape these days…

  61. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

Might as well take a look at Gaines Adams since we’re being ridiculous.

  62. JimmyJack Says:

i cant take Rices comments seriously. 43 makes me laugh from a lineman position. my guess is that it’s a publicity stunt. would be crazy if I’m wrong, maybe even crazier if it work but i suppose the aging process isn’t an exact science.

  63. Trubucfan22 Says:

    We should sign him ASAP!!!!

To be a coach. He could help our guys in practice. Teach them all of his tricks. That’s how you honor a living legend.

  64. BucEmUp Says:

Dumbest post on this blog possibly ever

  65. LakeLand Says:

William Gholston salary 5 Years $27,500,000

    Simeon Rice salary $00000

    William Gholston 0 sacks

    Simeon Rice 0 sacks

  66. JimmyJack Says:

Don’t bang on Gholston to hard. He does his job pretty well IMO. Sorry if you expected him to put up sacks but that was wishful thinking to say the least. Funny thing about you comparing Gholston to Rice is that if Rice was here he would rotate in for Gholston for 3rd downs.

  67. unbelievable Says:

Gholston was signed to play run defense, not the rush the passer. EVERYONE knows that, so you mind as well drop it.

Now I have 2 questions for the J0es….

    1. Did Florida legalize medical marijuana today?

    2. Was one of the J0es first in line?

    😂😂😂

  68. LakeLand Says:

  70. TampaTown Says:

I say sign him! The story alone might take pressure off our lousy defense. The media attention is going to draw a lot of blocking attention. He’ll still get a sack while the crowd goes wild. And the post game press conference will be priceless. Not to mention after the last three games Buc fans are ’bout to stroke out.

    PASS…………to the NTH degree

  76. Getaclue Says:

All I can think is how awesome it would be if he actually suited up and contributed. It would be insane, one of my favorite players ever. There is absolutely no risk to look at him and he actually looks like he is in better shape than he was playing and not the brad cullpepper type

Watched the Tyrod Taylor highlights youtube vs Bucs
Front 4 were not interrupting his view or throw lanes.
Missed tackles,…..blown coverages for huge pass completions.

Mike Smith has to talk these coverage failures thru with certain players.
Hargreaves was 3+ games fail before Smith acted.
The D ….certain players have to own their crappy performances.
The current zone scheme with 4 road pylons on d line isn’t working.
You have to change that up by having a LB line up 4 then stunt 3-4
Have the linebackers shift /just stay 1 yard off the line of scrimmage.
    Talk it up…..
If you determine to make things happen on D….they will, …usually make the fumble/pick 6 happen.

As if the team isn’t a laughing stock already. Imagine Rice having to wait another five years for the HOF. Lol. What a circus.

  84. Vico Says:

Bring back Chucky and Cadillac too. Brooks and Barber… what do we have to lose? Can we hire Romo as def coordinator? He does have a natural nack for clairvoyance… what about Alstott for those silly calls on 3rd and 3? How much damaga could his neck have anyway??

  85. B Coburn Says:

He might be in good enough shape to contribute for a couple games but that’s about it. While he may be in great shape keep in mind one of the biggest things that starts changing after 30 is recovering from injuries. All of those bumps and bruises will linger around and catch up by about the third or fourth game. I think the likelihood of injury in general also goes up.

  86. Lamarcus Says:

Joe didn’t say sign. Joe says take a look at rice. Gmc is not going for that. Rice might be good and gmc will have him flat for sure

  94. Simeon97 Says:

Joe, i respect you,l and love this site, but this is probably the stupidest thing you have ever written. I get bringing him in to mentor young players, but the dude is 43 and hasn’t played in a decade. Working him out would be pathetic at best.

  97. Pick6 Says:

yep. a front office and coaching staff that is at an all time low in popularity and fan goodwill should bring in a beloved former buc for a tryout with a 98% chance of being passed over. they should then (wisely) look at actual NFL players instead and further tick off all the frustrated fans who (unwisely) think six pack abs and a HOF resume supercede a 10 year NFL layoff and a 40+ year old body. Because no team in its right mind would consider signing Rice, there will be no way to prove they avoided a colossal mistake. Instead a city that has barely paid attention to the team since Rice retired will scream about how they passed on a chiseled 43 year old who was incredible in times long past

and seriously….as a guy who has been able to preserve\build his body worlds away from the NFL’s oversight for a decade, you don’t think he’s doing something the NFL doesn’t permit to stay in that sort of shape? Given the laundry list of substances totally acceptable to civilians but forbidden by the league, i figure he’d be slapped with a 4 game suspension

and by the way, 33 year old rice was cut by multiple teams before calling it a career. He’s given the game everything he could

  98. unbelievable Says:

  105. Bradinator Says:

Oh lighten up on Joe folks. He didn’t say sign him, just let him come down and run around a bit. Would it really hurt to have Simeon Rice come down to practice one day show some of this D-line what actual “move” looks like since none of them seems to have one in their tool box. The guy is contagious with his enthusiasm and drive. To have those guys see someone his age taking a turn around the field can’t hurt a single thing. Maybe, just maybe, someone will get a look at a true winner and leader and be inspired. This team currently has zero fire and grit. Maybe spending a day with the one of the feared DEs in history will have an effect. For the people worried we’ll be a laughingstock if we allow, this, let me help you…we already are. Our D is a complete and utter joke at this point. Lastly, and maybe more importantly it would just be FUN!! I need a smile about the Bucs right now, we all do. Have we forgotten it’s a game and supposed to be fun. Letting Rice come down for a day is just plain fun. Lighten up, kids.
