Meet One Of The Worst Blocking Teams In The National Football League

October 19th, 2017

The football gods have presented a gift to the Bucs defense

Ahh, the Bills are smelling like a sweet tonic for the suddenly beleaguered Buccaneers defense.

First, their wide receivers are second rate, which should temporarily solve the Vernon Hargreaves mess. Hopefully.

Second, Buffalo is a very bad blocking team, per the high-level-data nerds at BSPN.com.

Buried behind a pay wall (yeah, Joe pays), BSPN offers advanced data on blocking metrics, including what’s called “blocking wall,” referring to a team’s complete blocking on each play (every guy who doesn’t run a pass route).

Anyway, in this sea of data, the Bills’ grades are a “D” for run blocking, a “D-” for pass blocking and a “D-” overall. Your beloved Bucs offense gets a “B+” overall, a “C+” for run blocking and an “A-” for pass blocking.

Whatever you think of all this subjective grading, it’s clear that the Bucs won’t be facing any kind of juggernaut offense Sunday.

Heck, running back LeSean McCoy is Buffalo’s leading receiver with 27 receptions for just 179 yards. The Bills have just seven offensive touchdowns through five games.

This is the game for the Bucs defense to snap back into its second-half-of-2016 form.

Stats are for losers, remember ?
The Buffalo Bills have a mobile QB, who can buy time if his pass blocking isn’t the best.
Remember, they are undefeated at home.
LeSean McCoy has the speed to take it to the house, at any time.
We need to find some way to win this game
    Go Bucs !

  2. mike10 Says:

This info is absolutely irrelevant, unfortunately.

We have played 3 horrible offensive lines and have nearly nothing to show for it. We’re the 31st ranked defense, have 5 sacks, are giving up over 400 yards per game, and just got blasted by a RB who he himself wasn’t sure if he still had ‘it’.

Until our coaching is able to scheme up mismatches, this is scramble football and is anyone’s guess.

  3. Miguel Grande Says:

The Cardinal’s game was the “Snap back game”. It kept them out of the playoffs last year and surely this year.

No matter how bad the opposing team looks on paper, the Bucs will drop down to their level and screw the pooch!

    See Case Keenum.

  4. Chris Says:

So just to be clear, we have:

    – Two Pro Bowl wide receivers, one of the best tandems in the league
    – An All-Pro running back
    – One of the most talented TE duos in the league
    – And according to all the metrics, really solid pass protection

So….what on earth is the excuse?

  5. 813bucboi Says:

all I know is that the bills haven’t given up over 21points in a game and we have struggled to score points against good defenses….their 10 points away from being 5-0(9-3lost..16-20lost)….that tells me they control the clock with their run game and play good defense….GO BUCS!!!!

  6. Lamarcus Says:

Az oline is waaayyyy worse and DID NOT MATTER. Our problem is “being flat” on gameday

  7. MIKE Says:

    BUFFALO 33 BUC’S 24 BUC’S

  8. mike10 Says:

Miguel, how did u get a photo?

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    😬

    Me……………

we’ve heard this before and GMC aka “Mr Softie disappears to his batcave with his dolls for the whole game…..

  10. Jarid Says:

AZ got 2 starters back against us.. the LG and LT…sooooo..stop with the AZ line is horrible nonsense

  11. ndog Says:

Well if they give us a C+ for run blocking then that make their entire system broken! It’s hard to have good run blocking when you don’t want to and our team certainly did not want to last Sunday. Disgraceful!

  12. unbelievable Says:

Well then I’ll expect them to get an A- when we play them.

After all, every time a team is bad at something, on a scoreless streak, playing horrendous defense, or on a winless streak, they always seem to get right against he Bucs. It’s what we’ve done for 15+ years!

  13. Rojas Says:

This game will determine the rest of our season.

  14. Lamarcus Says:

Lol unbelievable. Yet and so true. Thus doesn’t look good. Hope they come inflated to buffalo

  15. Negative Jeff Says:

27-17 Bills. Bucs literally have no chance here. Buffalo’s coaching staff is far superior and Buffalo has the better defense. With Fitz behind center, this should be great material for the football follies videos. Will even surpass the material that Winston routinely provides. The NFL should release two follies videos each year. One for the Bucs and one for the rest of the NFL. Thank you Tampa Bay for once again being the laughing stock of the NFL. 10 years in a row! Way to go! Why couldn’t I have been born in the North East…….I’d have a winner to root for vs. this group of chump-quitters.

  16. Not there yet Says:

Trap game lol!!!!! This is how far we have come with Dirk. Being happy gronk was out for Patriots, hoping for the worst case scenario when playing teams because we can’t beat anybody at full strength. Advanced stats don’t measure hear if a player or the team. Most of these guys are alpha makes with sprinkles of guys like vh3 in there so at home I have no doubt that opposing teams looks at is as a week beatable team.

Dirk hasn’t figured out how to score points on a team after a full pain and coming off like 10 days to prepare, no reason to believe this team will suddenly wake up. Kansas City win last year was no fluke they came in and took that game but games like Dallas and saints at the end of the season will continue to make me wonder which team will show up and which one is the real bucs team. Tired of that are they or are they not a playoff caliber team

Simple answer is make the playoffs. Until that time they are not, I’m tired of looking at the team I love showing the national media that deer in the headlights look. You shouldn’t have multiple blowouts in your program every year

  17. Cobraboy Says:

The Bucs win, there is some hope for the season.

The Bucs lose and the wheels come off.

The Bills are one of the strongest D teams in the NFL. So far the team has not fared well against a stout D.

  18. Brandon Says:

Everytime we talk about the insufficiencies of our opponents, the bucs somehow find a way to make these teams look like a bunch of all stars. Where’s the heart in this team? Someone is gonna have to step up and light a fire in them.

  19. Wesley Says:

And the Bills will suddenly have their best game blocking.

  20. Defense Rules Says:

Really wish you wouldn’t do this Joe. Patriots’ were dog-meat … secondary was really bad & they couldn’t stop the run, or so we were told. Arizona was a ‘horrible team’ remember? And yet, somehow, we lost to both of them. Bills are 3-2 and are playing MUCH better defense than the Bucs (as in the #1 defense). The 2 games they did lose were because their offense couldn’t find the end-zone against 2 very good defenses (Carolina & Cincinnati). Sound familiar?. But in the other 3 games their offense was not that bad, and they averaged 23 pts/game against some defenses (Jets, Falcons, Broncos) that are performing significantly better than ours. IF the Bucs win, this’ll be a dog-fight.

  21. DBS Says:

    @ Chris
You forgot. We have a Pro Bowl QB!!

  22. John Ensch Says:

The Bucs have a way of making bad teams look good and awful teams look great. So I don’t expect to see anything different then what we have been seeing from this Offense and Defense.

  23. Broy34 Says:

Teams with great weaknesses mean nothing when you cannot exploit them. That’s what happens with awful coaching

  24. tmaxcon Says:

the bucs mighty pass rush has faced nothing but immobile statues and could not get the job done I am sure they will make the bills oline look like the cowboys line of two years ago.

  25. Conte Piscateli Says:

Will the Bills o line be set tonic for our defense, out will our defense be set tonic for the Bills o line? I bet they are looking at this game as their chance to get right as well.

  26. Waterboy Says:

Great stats and matchup on paper but paper matchups no longer get me excited. After having too many of my Sundays ruined by the results of Bucs games over the years, I’ve taken a whole new mental approach this year. I’m now of the “show me” mindset. I no longer care about potential, paper matchups, upside or any of the rah rah or hype. Until I see it consistently on the field I’m not buying it. I’m pulling and hoping but it’s as simple as this “show me”.

  27. gotbbucs Says:

Shady will probably have the best game of his year.

  28. ElioT Says:

    LOL, this is funny!

The Bucs “CURE WHAT AILS YOU” defense will get Buffalo’s offense back on track.

    Go Bucs!

  29. DBS Says:

The Bucs offense will more than likely keep the defense on the field most of the day!

  30. dooshlarue Says:

All you guys with the score predictions are funny.
    Why?
    Because we seldom score a normal amount of points, i.e. 14, 17, 21, 28
    We like to score 5,11, 15, 19 or 33.

  31. Q Says:

YEAH AND LAST WEEK THE CARDINALS WERE THE WORST RUN TEAM IN THE NFL AND TOO OLD….WE GOT OUR ARSES HANDED TO US …lets not get all excited …the bills are the best team in the AFC EAST ….they may not be able to block but we have the worst defense in the league

  32. Q Says:

Shady can run and can catch in the backfield …knowing how this defense is every year we will make him look like Barry sanders

  33. Bucsfanman Says:

Joe, there are no “gifts” in the NFL. Teams seem to come out of their slump against us.
One thing for sure, WE could use a “slump-buster”!!!

  34. joestang Says:

Shady doubles his output, bucs get no pressure, fitzpatrick has at least 2 pics.

    Bills win easily.

  35. Tackleblockwin Says:

Boy I have heard this one before. Back up QB’s have recently destroyed our D. Terrible overall opposing O’s are terrible one minute…but then they have record setting days vs Bucs D. I will always be a Bucs fan, but it will take some time for me to ever think we are truly favorites before kick off.

  36. Freder Says:

“So just to be clear, we have:
    – Two Pro Bowl wide receivers, one of the best tandems in the league
– An All-Pro running back
– One of the most talented TE duos in the league
– And according to all the metrics, really solid pass protection

So….what on earth is the excuse?”

Very good question Chris and one that we should all take seriously.

Your community provides the excuse, hind sighting its way to some of the nastiness and most hurtful comments in nil blogdom history. These players don’t want to hear that sh*t. It just shows an immature intolerance for your fellow man. Here’s the antidote to the whole situation that the bucs find themselves in. Drastic times call for drastic measures. Everybody take a knee! You’ll be the number one story on ESPN while drawing attention to a most tragic social injustice. Bucs, 21 – 15.

  37. LakeLand Says:

The Bills defense held the Falcons to 17 points. They held the Broncos to 16 points. They held the Carolina Panthers to 9 points. They held the Jets to 12 points. They held the Bengals to 20 points. I don’t think the Bills will need much offense to beat the Bucs. Especially coming off a bye, and Head Coach Sean McDermott familiarity with the Bucs.

  38. Big Stinky Says:

Just more BS to make us think the Bucs will/can win. If they can’t beat the Bills they may as well pack it in for the season. We are NOT going to beat the Panthers this year, they look too good. Cam will put up 30+ points against us and we will be lucky to score 20 points against that defense. I watched the 1st half of the Eagles/Panthers game and Wentz was having trouble moving the ball against them for the most part. Both defenses looked good that night. At least we might be able to win the game against the Packers now that Rodgers is out, but that is JUST one game. I don’t expect a 5-game winning streak this year the way the offense is playing, defense looks even worse. The Bills game is a MUST win, just like the Cardinals game should have been. The Bucs are hanging their hat on the fact that there are 11 more games to play like they STILL have time to right the ship. Time is running out on them. They have to play better starting this week, enough said. Playoffs or Bust! Go BUCS!

  39. Patrick in VA Says:

Until they prove otherwise, the Bucs are a “get right” team where opposing teams with downtrodden units come in and suddenly look like superstars. Before last week, Carson Palmer was being pushed out to pasture and Larry Fitzgerald had lost more than a step. We made them look like world beaters. I’m not interested in anything that the statisticians say should happen because these guys are the worst at playing down to their competition. Or, as I’m starting to think after years of being in denial, they legitimately are just worse than their bad opponents.

  40. ColonelAngus Says:

You forget that the Bucs are the get right team. Look for the Bills o-line to grade out as an A+ this week.

  41. GhostofSchiano Says:

LOL….still remember last year when many here was worried Mike Smith would leave for a HC gig somewhere…guess we are safe now for whatever that’s worth.

  42. DoNUTS Says:

From last week, I am still looking for 5 first downs in a row instead of 5 wins….my gauge for Buc greatness is much lower than the greatness that is Ira Kaufmann.

Playoffs???!!! Playoffs??!! Are u kidding me (in Coach Jim Mora voice)

  43. uckinator Says:

Michael Grande – Bet you wish Joe still had the Tampa Bay Rays conversation going. I know I miss it. Darth Ray-der

  44. Clw JB Says:

There are 3-2, at home, with a well known nasty defense – we are coming off a long, beat-down taking west coast trip and back on the road again …

If we can get back on track and win this game who knows…but have to believe if we don’t “start fast” – we are staring at a top ten pick next year…the 3 offenses in our own division are going to eat us alive if we don’t wake up soon.

Gotta have this win, please football gods, please!!!!!!

  45. Bucsfanman Says:

@Ghost- SMH YES! Dude got paid for what, 8 games worth of defense?!

I can say that a lot of us expected more.

  46. Jeffrey Yoemans Says:

The bucs have a way of making bad teams look good. I’m still worried.

  47. grafikdetail Says:

said the same thing about the patriot crappy o-line too

  48. BucTrooper Says:

    Minnesota had Case Keenum.
    Arizona was “old.”
    Now the Bills can’t block.

    I’ve heard this song before……

  49. Herbiebuc Says:

I’m literally writing down everybody name who claming to be bucs fans and predicting a loss Come Sunday when we smash the bills I suggest you keep that same lame pessimistic attitude. Y’all sound silly like somebody forcing y’all to be fans smh. Watch we go on a 5 or 6 games winning streak because it’s obvious we sneeze away from causing hell!! When that happens y’all fake fans wanna act like y’all riders. Y’all suck (fakebucsfans)
