Bucs Not Eager To Can Folk

October 8th, 2017

Job security?

It seems the Bucs are content to keep a choke artist of a kicker.

That’s the word from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network in a new video report from Rapoport. He says Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht doesn’t have an itchy trigger finger to unload futile Nick Folk, even though he did his best to tank the Giants game last week and thoroughly shat the bed like a sick dog against the Belicheats Thursday night.

Why? Because, per Rapoport, the Bucs fear the kickers on the street are worse than Folk.

“It is not like the Bucs are thrilled with what’s out there on the free agent market,” Rapoport said.

Rapoport confirmed two kickers the Bucs are flying in today for a workoout tomorrow at One Buc Palace. One is former Bucs kicker Mike Nugent, who in his brief career here kicked more like Ted Nugent, connecting on just a third of his kicks. Nugent was supposed to replace Matt Bryant in 2009. We all know how that worked out.

Also, Rapoport stated the Bucs are bringing in former Dolphins kicker Andrew Franks, who put up far better numbers with the Dolphins than Folk has with the Bucs.

You can watch Rapoport’s full video report below.

    no word on dan carpenter?

  3. I'm tired and 87 is right Says:

Funny Dolphin fan at work was telling me we should get Franks. He said he was a very reliable kicker anything under 50. He just doesn’t have the leg for long kicks. I’m like good then he’s hired. We don’t need to be kicking 50 yarders anywho. Nor should many teams in the NFL. Go get em! Go Bucs!

  4. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

I’ll take Pat Murray over Folk all day.

I remember him being decent. Folk on the other hand has been a walking travesty.

    Fire him immediately.

  5. Joe Says:

    walking travesty.

    🙂

  6. Erc2706 Says:

Said it before and I’ll say it again. I think it’s the holder that’s in his head. Dudes a great punter but he can’t place the ball in the sweet spot accurately consistently. I think that’s why Jacksonville got rid of him. I know i read it or heard it somewhere I just can’t remember from who. It was said when he left their field goal kicking issues improved greatly. It kills me we haven’t tried to change the holder yet. Maybe the chemistry just isn’t there.

  7. FortMyersDave Says:

Joe, why don’t the Bucs call in Marvin Kloss, the Groza finalist from USF. The kid is still living in Tampa and would be an upgrade over Folk. He has a strong leg and did not crap the bed in crunchtime at USF albeit he played on a couple of bad USF teams where his kicks would beat the likes of UConn or Cincy 13-10. He would have made that 31 yarder on Thursday and likely would have drilled the 49 yarder as well. One other thing, the kid has kicked at RJS before so for what it is worth One Buc should at least let the kid tryout with Nugent and the Fins kicker. Heck, make Folk try out as well!

  8. THETRUTH Says:

    Erc2706:

If holder why does he do so well in practice, Dude career is up and down, he is down now. hos kicks aren’t even missing close

He needs to go !!! if not we will lose another game due to his kicking and with this lack of offense many games wil be close and every point counts.

  9. '79Defense Says:

He’s worse than Aguayo at this point. I know it’s crazy and would take things to a new level as far as creating an even bigger circus, but it would be interesting to bring Aguayo back to have another shot. Seriously, would he do worse than Folk?–never going to happen though.

  10. Madcon Says:

    Sign Destroying)))

  11. Aristotle Says:

I always wondered if it could be the holder and if they tried anyone else. It’s quite astronomical that we got the two worst kickers in the NFL in back to back years….

  12. Capt.Tim Says:

Keeping him means we’ve given up on the season.

  13. teacherman777 Says:

    I miss Connor Barth.

    I miss Matt Bryant.

    Aguayo, I just pity.

  14. Conte Piscateli Says:

Are you kidding me? How can any of them be worse. His confidence is shot. A kicker with confidence issues is useless. Fine done like the kickers on the street, call up Joe Dirt and let him kick. He can’t possibly do any worse than 0-3.

  15. P'cola Buc Says:

Keeping Folk???……Are we tanking for Saquon Barkley already???

  16. JameisDungy Says:

    Another botch from Licht.

Lets be honest wouldn’t you rather have Roberto than Folk?

And its not to say Roberto is good. At least if he was sucking we could just hope he turns it around.

We traded up for him and then gave up on him in one year. Make no mistake about it if Licht knew Folk would struggle this much he’d never cut Roberto. Licht has dropped the ball on kickers two years in a row.

  17. K_bassuka Says:

Just bring Aguayo back! Folk is washed and is folking it up out there. Good teams don’t hang on to garbage.

  18. darin Says:

Any kicker with confidence is better than folk right now. If you want more missed kicks send folk back out. The 10 day breaks only gona make him worse. He is not even kicking the ball on the correct part of the foot. Not sure how they could consider keeping him. Gota find one and hope he has confidence. Sending folk back out would be another travashamockery. Go Bucs

  19. Roy T. Buford Says:

Patrick Murray kicked the ball like one hits a penalty kick in Soccer. It was a cannon shot so to speak, approached low over the ball, often barely clearing the line and never seemed to have the backwards tumble we see from striking the ball low. He also didn’t have much range. He wasn’t bad, but I do recall some of his higher percentage kicks were way too close for comfort.

At the end of the day, the Bucs cut kickers usually for a good reason, althoug Dominik apparently just didn’t like Matt Bryant and Matt didn’t hesitate to speak his mind.

  20. Roy T. Buford Says:

I remember Mike Nugent, and didn’t remember him as being that bad…for other teams. Of course, he’s a household name. I told my wife he was Ted Nugent’s son, and if she looked hard could see the resemblance. Had her going for at least a little bit.

  21. LocalJoker Says:

I’m not eager to get new coaches, but there’s been a two year life cycle. Better win! Glazers are impatient and Gruden said “call me if you need me, I’m right down the road”. Better make the right decision!

  22. Roy T. Buford Says:

Okay, so I look at Mike Nugent’s stats with CIN for the last 7 years, and his numbers seem decent. His long is 58 yards. I do see he had some problems last year at CIN, which clearly meant his demise…he missed five PATs in five games.
He was taken in by NYG this year but lost a pre-season competition and was cut. I’d say try him out.

  23. austinbuc Says:

I am trying to imagine a world full of unemployed kickers all worse than Folk. Do they kick backwards? With their eyes closed?
I have faith in Licht, but it will diminish greatly if they allow Folk to cost them again. And, no doubt, he will if he ever kicks for them again.

  24. Easy Denman Says:

Mike Nugent would be solid competition for Folk. His an established veterans too.

  25. PistolPete Says:

Licht really putting himself out there if he hangs onto Folk and the guys costs us more games like Roberto did last year.
I’m a fan of sticking with your employees, but when they cost you business you HAVE to move on.

  26. Pickgrin Says:

    Get the Folk outta here….

How this guy was not canned on Friday is beyond me. Anyone and I mean ANYONE with 1/2 a leg would be a better choice for us right now than Nick Folk.

  27. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs not eager to let Folk go? Ok Mediocrity!!! Accept your fate. Fall back into the…8-8 is wonderful syndrome.

  28. Kalind Says:

There are literally dozens of college kickers who graduate from college. I guarantee ALL of them have a better make rate. Grab any of them. For goodness sakes. I’d take Aguayo back at this point! His rate is way higher and we’re STILL paying him.

  29. Pete Mitchell Says:

    Bring in Kloss!!!

    http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/bulls/marvin-kloss-message-to-bucs-i-live-3-minutes-away/2340174

  30. Stanglassman Says:

    Is George Yarno is available?

  31. EA Says:

Bucs are content with mediocrity, just like some people posting on this board.

  32. Greg Says:

This isn’t on Licht, this is in Koetter, he wanted Aquayo gone last year! No way they give up on Folk now, Dirk’s too hardheaded and won’t admit he made another coaching mistake keeping this guy. I agree with the guy that said being in Kloss, but was money for USF.

  33. TheBucsAnthem Says:

This is just too damn funny………you just gotta laugh at this mess.

When Kyle Brindza cost the bucs a couple of games, were in this situation, hence the Aguayo pick (worst pick ever)……and I was all in on it thinking just like JL and alota bucs fans that our kicking woes were solved for the next decade.

Now, two seasons later…………HERE WE GO AGAIN.

Maybe trying to find a kicker is like trying to find a franchise QB……….they’re few and far between??????

  34. JonBuc Says:

Folk is mentally shot. He’s been shakey…even on the one’s he has snuck between the uprights. Time to move on…he’s not even close right now.

  35. Trevor in Orlando Says:

I know it’s not an ideal situation, but why not have a Veteran kicker (Folk, Carpenter, Nugent) on the roster, then get one of these kids who never got a shot outside of preseason on the Practice Squad, so the team can get a long extended look at one of these younger guys, not just a brief tryout. From what I’ve read, the team doesn’t want to look at younger guys because they don’t have a resume in the NFL, and would rather get a known commodity, even though the ceiling may be much lower for that veteran player.

What I really don’t want to see is us be back in this situation 2-4 weeks from now; a kicker making less than half of his kicks; and starting from scratch again regarding who to turn to to play the position. Let’s get a young guy on the PS, and be ready in case we need him.

  36. Buc believer Says:

Licht and Koetter REALLY need to think this thing over. What does it say to your team if you keep this guy around? I would can him and bring in someone else if not anything but for the morale of the team! If a guy can suck wind and costs you games all the players who played hard are watching this.

  37. LongSeason Says:

I’m ready ti can Folks. Can McCoy kick? What about Not having a kicker. Just punt or go for it on 4th down. We stand a better chance that way. Anger can handle punts and kickoff. Unless they find out that Folk have correctable mechanics, then he has to go. Rappin’ Iaport is usually right. I would give Franks a chance. I saw his name attached to other reports and he sounds like a possibility.

For those that think long snapper or holder is a problem, then look at the games on Game Rewind. Nothing wrong with either.

  38. Locked In Says:

Bears took another look at Roberto last week, brought him in for another tryout after Connor Barf shanked 2 47 yarders and is 2 for 4 this season.

  39. Buc1987 Says:

Uh oh my new 65″ Sony TV is in jeopardy….

  40. Cannon Says:

The only reason Folk is on the roster is because they don’t have a replacement.

Can’t can your only kicker, regardless of how bad he is.

  41. Frank Pillow Says:

Somewhere Lawrence Tynes is laughing his butt off…”it’s a Bucs life”

  42. Wausa Says:

If Jason Licht keeps Nick Folk. Jason Licht should be let go.

  43. NOSBOS Says:

Will it ever end??? smdh man..

  44. Destinjohnny Says:

    Winning games is overrated

  45. Mo_Downs Says:

If we keep Folk then we’re going for the top PK/OL/DL in the draft.

  46. Garv Says:

Seriously? How the HELL can Coach Koetter continue to trust this guy? Every time he trots out there he seems to GET trots kicking the freaking ball wide somewhere. What is wrong with trying someone NOT “proven” because if “proven” is Folk or Negent I’ll take a young guy like Kloss. Damn, how FRU
    TRATING!!!!

  47. LocalJoker Says:

The field is set. Mike Nugent, Andrew Franks, and Josh Lambo. Competition rigged for Folk to win. SMDH.

  48. chipbuc Says:

It’s not rocket science there’s a kicker who’s been waived injured by KC, Cairo Santos. He’s been their kicker for the last 3 years. He’s really good, but since his contract is up this year KC moved on. Just sign him and wait for him to get healthy. Maybe 2 to 3 weeks and you have a above average kicker. In the mean time bring in someone to bridge the gap.

  49. CalBucsFan Says:

    Arguayo?

  50. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I read that 4-5 kickers are being brought in Monday. Not just two.

And did they ever replace Smith? If not, we have room for two.

I think they should cut Folk and sign the two best kickers available. Give it a week or so to see which will do the best job.

  51. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Hmm where did all the Aguayo Haters go?

  52. Bucamania Says:

Eagles and Chiefs found undrafted rookie kickers just a few weeks ago who are doing very well. Licht can’t find one that’s even decent?!

  53. cmurda Says:

There’s not much out there because all of our previous kickers that were solid are now on other teams. Go figure.

  54. cmurda Says:

@First Down. They just turned into Folk haters. Count me among the bunch. It’s pretty clear for a kicker. He has one job and that is to kick FG’s. This isn’t like McCoy who is still being effective simply by eating up double teams and allowing the other 3 guys one on one chances to get to QB.

  55. Doit Bucs Says:

All the ex collage kickers out there bring in a few of them. Give someone that has not had a shot a shot at it. What do we have to losses

  56. unbelievable Says:

BIG SHOUT OUT TO YET ANOTHER WAY THAT MARK DUMMYNICK F@CKED THIS TEAM OVER!

    -Matt Bryant

  57. Alanbucsfan Says:

Is 61 year old Eddie (money) Murray in shape?

  58. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs bring in Mike Nugent for a tryout..They cut Matt Bryant 8 years ago for Mike Nugent. Then cut Nugent after 4 games, which he went 2-6 on FG. Now 8 years later they bring him in for a tryout. SMH

  59. TheDailyAutopsy Says:

    Nick Aquayo

  60. Rayjay1122 Says:

I still can’t believe that out of all the kickers out of college as well a CFL, AFL and hell even semi pro teams have kickers who can make a freaking FG. But we can’t find anyone who can do the job. SMH.

So, in 2 games we have left 16 points on the field because of Folks misses. The Bucs are fine with it and are keeping Mr. Unreliable. That is a sign to me that losing is acceptable and expected.

2-2 record and too many people say fans that are negative…. well deal with it! This team should be 3-1 if not 4-0. I am a true fan but I am not an apologist who is going to defend actions and decisions that lead to more losses. All kickers miss sometimes but where is the line in the Sand?

  61. unbelievable Says:

    Exactly rayjay

6 misses in 2 games (for a total of 16 points!) is unacceptable to any franchise that is serious about winning.

  62. BringBucsBack Says:

For Licht, drafting Roberto was a potential job-costing move, keeping Folk should be viewed the same way.

They can’t possibly keep him. Truly, there are better H.S. kickers.

  63. B Coburn Says:

I agree that we shouldn’t keep picking up retreads but joe many young guys that did well in college are out there? X amount of teams all with their own kicker. It’s only been a few months since college finished. You are telling me not a single one would be better than Folk?

  64. Roy T. Buford Says:

Pretty sure the Bucs will bring in guys we know, and guys NO ONE knows. And hopefully, for ALL, someone NO ONE knows will be guys like Nugent out. Then the Bucs can shrug and say they picked a bunch to come in, and we know them too, and they picked the best of that. And the winner goes to Phoenix to kick indoors for his first game (in the NFL?).

  65. G-Money Says:

With all that is going on, and the fact that the Glazer’s once again made a decision to put/keep people in charge that we have now. This will also be an evaluation time for this regime as well, and for the bucs fans who thought the HC change “Had” to be made; just stay tuned. Second round draft pick mistakes? Only defensive end threat you have waived? And a more that winnable game called very poorly on Thursday night that featured a running back that; I’ll just say, there was not a whole lot of confidence in him to come back and be effective, how do you feel now? So we will see if the Jason and Dirk show is just another Glazer mistake?? “GO BUCS”
P.S. There’s more wrong with this team, than just kicking!!!!

  66. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Yeah. That fact that some are saying the best drafting gm we’ve ever had shouls be fired over a kicker????

    Fair weather fans.

I refuse to believe true Bucs fans could be so stupid.

As to other kickers, aren’t the posts closer together in the cfl?

  67. Broy34 Says:

Am I the only one that sees repeated bad holds by anger? Because they’re bad. Not saying it’s the reason but just replace anger as holder. Period

  68. unbelievable Says:

@Broy what make you say that?

On the broadcast, Jay Feely said the holds were perfect and that Folk is turning his foot early. He also pointed out that he’s lifting his head before following through because he’s not confident in his motion (same as Agauyo). Cobraboy was a kicker and noticed the same things, not issues with the holder.

  69. Bucs78 Says:

Posted this on 10/1 after Giants game … We need a more dependable kicker, too many points squandered, who’s available for try outs?

  70. LakeLand Says:

I thought Rich Mckay was the best drafting GM in the history of the Bucs.

  71. MIKE Says:

what’s he good for ,, not makin’ field goal for sure…do they have try out set up yet??? I want to try out , can’t do no worse than folk…lol…..

  72. B Coburn Says:

Yeah I specifically looked at the hold when they replayed his shortest miss and looked like a perfect hold, believe that was also where that commentary from Feeley came in

  73. JP4 Says:

Lord have mercy…that guy is ugly!

  74. denjoe Says:

Licht is not having a great contract year so far!!

  75. Brandon Says:

I wonder what Michael Husted is up to…

  76. BillyBob Says:

We had a record holding accurate draft Pick and now a veteran kicker go wacko on the Bucs. I think it is time to call into question the special teams coach approach with his kickers.
