Sacks Goal Missed Sunday & Last Season

September 18th, 2017

Internal data goals emerge for the Bucs’ defense

Winning head coach Dirk Koetter revealed internal Buccaneers data this afternoon, so Joe broke out the calculator while panting for a piping hot plate of Abe’s Place wings.

So about that subpar pass rush, coach?

Joe noted earlier on the Monday Morning Joe Podcast that Lady Liberty Mike Glennon was dumped for just one sack in 45 passing attempts.

Not good.

Sure, the Tampa Bay pass rush was impactful and Noah Spence had a strip/sack, but the pressure was far too inconsistent, especially from a Bears team that had historically bad rushing totals.

“Well, quarterback hits are good. Quarterback hits are a good thing,” Koetter said. “You’ve got to believe that those had some impact on those turnovers. Our goal is to get one sack in every 14 attempts and we were nowhere close to that yesterday, but I don’t think anybody that watched that game would say that our rush didn’t affect the game. Sometimes a sack number by itself can not be that accurate.”

Koetter is right. Sack numbers can be misleading. Take last year, the Bucs were ninth in the NFL in sacks, yet their pass rush was rather inconsistent and needed an upgrade this past offseason.

This isn’t just Joe’s take. Koetter himself was critical of his pass rush just one month ago.

So about that calculator. In the quote above, Koetter said the Bucs’ goal is one sack for every 14 attempts. Last season, when the Bucs defense was strong in the second half of the year, the Bucs hit that sacks goal in five of their final eight games.

Overall in 2016, the Bucs finished with a sack in every 14.4 passing attempts. So they were close to the goal.

Numbers can always be misleading. But this Bucs goal is there for a reason. And when Mike Glennon drops back 45 times, you need to drop him at least a few times. At least.

But yet all Belichess wants to do is push the pocket and take away your run game. But we hung up on sac’s.

  2. P'cola Buc Says:

Still would have loved to have Mike Smith “mic-ed” during the 1st Quarter and hear his pleasure as his defence had 3 turnovers! We love you Mike!

  3. shouldhavedraftedeifert Says:

Did they get enough pressure…. let Glennon’s 68% completion percentage answer that BUT good news Min o-line is horrendous.

  4. NOSBOS Says:

Some guy name D.Wise got the pats single sac yesterday. He’s on a 450,000 dolla contract.

  5. NOSBOS Says:

Makes me wonder how much complaing they’re fans are doing in ne over sac’s right now.

  6. SteelStudBuc Says:

Need to dial up some blitzes. Even the odd safety blitz

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Sounds like Koetter and Smitty are expecting 2-3 sacks every game. Quite realistic with this defense IMO. However, Glennon was getting rid of the ball super-quick yesterday by throwing all short stuff, and it’s hard to sack a QB who’s doing that. But that should also mean minimal explosive pass plays (little deep threat), and thus more taking plays to score. And if the opponents’ offense becomes that predictable, should also mean more opportunities for turnovers I would think. At least that’s what yesterday’s game looked like.

  8. NOSBOS Says:

To whoever said it,I’m not a pats fan dude. I bleed pewter and fire red. I am a fan of Belichess mind tho.

  9. tmaxcon Says:

if a horrible backup qb completes 68% of his passes you have no pass rush. obviously they were more concerned about run than pass rush. given the fact that gmc is the biggest liability in the run game he only played 60% of snaps smith was clearly hiding the smiling liability.

  10. DallasBuc Says:

How many sacks did Mr Yeasting rack up yesterday?

  11. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“if a horrible backup qb completes 68% of his passes you have no pass rush. obviously they were more concerned about run than pass rush. given the fact that gmc is the biggest liability in the run game he only played 60% of snaps smith was clearly hiding the smiling liability.”

    ———-

The old question I’ve always wondered has been answered – you don’t believe a word you are typing. You’re just trying to stir things up. If you can possibly watch that game and not thing GMC dominated, then you are even more clueless than I thought. Hell, he damn near took the handoff on the first play of the game!!! He was at 60% snaps because he didn’t play in the 4th quarter you jack wagon! He had 4 QB hits by himself!!! Suh, Aaron Donald, Geno Atkins and JJ Watt (not a 3 technique, but still) had 5 combined!!! One of his hits was on Glennon’s pick 6!!! Listen, if you need attention, there’s other ways to get it. If your life is that miserable, there’s people you can talk to. I don’t want to hear about you hurting yourself because you don’t think anyone cares.

  12. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I thought the pass rush was really good for the majority of the game. Of course there were some snaps where Glennon had all day, but that happens every game. We were bringing pressure, and we were getting there most of the time. Glennon was rarely able to sit back and fire away. The majority of the pressure came from up the middle, which doesn’t allow a QB to step into his throws. I have my doubts if we are talented enough to keep this up all season, but I was very impressed with the pass rush yesterday.

  13. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“Need to dial up some blitzes. Even the odd safety blitz”

    ——–

Need to watch the game closer. We blitzed plenty yesterday.

  14. Reach87 Says:

On queue the resident moron emerges to trash arguably our best player. Back to your miserable hole please.

  15. tmaxcon Says:

    Hawaiian Buc

you really are delusional my man… just because he is the only players name that senile dick stockton remembered for the first part of the game that is NOT domination that is simply the bucs are irrelevant nationally and the old man did zero research on the real winners. GMC and company were getting torched by a backup who. Until Kwon made a play gmc and his boys were DOING NOTHING! I stand by my statement the bucs will NEVER contend with cancer93 on roster. you can fix a losing mentality. new bucs give us hope cancer93, martin, dotson and the rest of the holdovers give us reason to doubt. after all you boy’s legacy will be the Face of the Basement Years…

  16. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I really think some of you think we are Alabama playing against Florida Atlantic. The other team has talented players too, and is going to make some plays. We beat the every living crap out of Chicago. There’s plenty to work on, but nothing to complain about as a fan. If you aren’t happy with a 29 point lead late in the 4th, then you are going to be very unhappy this season, because it may never happen again. Most NFL games are close, and we are going to be in a bunch of close games this year. We aren’t going to have 12 sacks per game and keep the opponents completion percentage under 50%. You have to be more realistic.

  17. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @tmax,

So did he not hit the QB 4 times? Did he not make tackle the RB in the backfield on the first play of the game? Did he not hit Glennon on the pick 6?

It’s also amazing how you can get torched, yet only give up 7 points (which happened with mostly backups in and playing a prevent). I want to get torched every week. And do you believe that Kwon is the only guy that made that play? You don’t think Glennon perhaps rushed the throw because pressure was coming? Do you think it’s easy to hold a good running team like the Bears to under 30 yards total? And you call me delusional? LMAO. You’re such an unhappy person. I truly feel sorry for you, and anyone who has the terrible luck of being around you. I feel very confident that’s a very small number though.

  18. T in Orlando Says:

Yes more sacks would be great, however it seems like the gameplan was to slow down the run at all costs, don’t give up anything deep and force Glennon to beat us playing dink and dunk to a garbage WR corps; I think any good D would go in with that same game plan. Mission Accomplished; Glennon got his throws in, completed most of them, and we held a very good running team to 20 yards.

It would have been great to see this D rack up 4+ sacks, but the important thing was we got the W, and I think the defense accomplished at least it’s top 2 or 3 goals; Hold team to less than 10 points, create 2+ turnovers, holding running game to less than 80 yards. I don’t think sack Glennon 2 times or more would even be top 5 defensive goals to the game.

  19. shouldhavedraftedeifert Says:

    Dear Hawaiian,
Did he not hit Glennon on the pick 6?
Nope, Glennon was untouched and not pressured on the pick 6.

You don’t think Glennon perhaps rushed the throw because pressure was coming?
Nope, he wasn’t pressured on the Kwon pick either. Even the commentator said the pocket was clean.

Do you think it’s easy to hold a good running team like the Bears to under 30 yards total?
    They rushed 16 times TOTAL.

And you call me delusional? I didn’t call you that but yes.

  20. NOSBOS Says:

D@## did y’all just see that overthhrowv by stafford. Amazing.

  21. NOSBOS Says:

A,everyone outside of Tmax complaining about yesterday’s win is a @$$wipe. And did y’all catch that overthrow???

  22. Lamarcus Says:

Gholston was the anchor of the line yesterday. His elite run stopping ability has gone unnoticed its not about GMC. As a GMC had a little to no impact on bears oline. Enough w this GMC dominated crap as he was suppose to change but I see the same OK player. Luckily I feel good about the win

  23. NOSBOS Says:

VH3 must be doing good second year inn, didn’t notice him get beat like apple just did.

  24. unbelievable Says:

Lol He was hit right as he threw the ball. But but but the announcer (calling his 1st game ever) said something, so it must be 100% accurate.

    Take a lap.

Lol Hawaiian just mopped the floor with tmax.

  25. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“Nope, Glennon was untouched and not pressured on the pick 6.”
    ————

You’re an idiot. Watch it again. You can even see his offensive lineman helping him up – all while the play is being run back for a TD!!! I wish I could attach a picture, but of course with you morons it wouldn’t matter anyway.

16 rushes for 30 yards is under 2 yards per carry. That’s exceptional.

Again, 4 hits on the QB. You crybabies always talk about stats, but then when we give you stats, you say the stats are misleading. You’re never happy. You always complain. You are pathetic, little ignorant people.

  26. DB55 Says:

Geno Atkins and JJ Watt (not a 3 technique, but still) had 5 combined!!
    ———

This is why I can’t read this mf dribble, he literally has zero fkn clue. Genco Atkins had 2 MONSTER sacks and lived in the backfield the whole game.

Atkins had 5 tackles and 2 sacks. It will take your boyfriend at least three 1st qrts (bc we all know he disappears after the 1st) to catch up. GMC couldn’t get 5 tackles and 2 sacks if he tried. Has he ever even come close to 5 tackles let alone 2 sacks in a game. NO!

GMC is a biatch, take his peepee out your mouth you lying sack of chit. Go drink a bottle and bet on some games you degenerate loser. Why are you still alive shouldn’t you have died already?

  27. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Lamarcus,

What exactly do you expect out of him? He had 4 QB hits. He forced errors. He stuffed the run. He ran down plays (see the screen pass). He did everything he is supposed to do. It’s really funny that the only people that find fault in him are the same 2 or 3 people. Are you 2 or 3 smarter than everyone else? What’s your football background? How exactly are you more qualified that Dirk, Smith, and Licht (who all rave about him). What about all the players, sports writers, commentators, former players, etc. that constantly praise him? When 99.99% of the world thinks something, there’s a pretty good chance the .01% is dead arse wrong.

  28. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“GMC is a biatch, take his peepee out your mouth you lying sack of chit. Go drink a bottle and bet on some games you degenerate loser. Why are you still alive shouldn’t you have died already?”

    ———-

    Waaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! What a loser.

  29. richbucsfan Says:

You’re talking about the wrong Buc. How did Swaggy do? I think he lucked up once and did something good. Did he finish the game or did he wear out by half time? Didn’t see him in the second half. Ya suppose he needs to get in shape or will this be the way it is through 16 games?

  30. DB55 Says:

GMC had a half decent game (I guess) with 1 tackle (1st 8mins left) and 2 asst. one of which he just fell on top of gholstons tackle. Hey you have to pad your stats. Even with that he was still the least productive 3tech in the division.

Pff says he had 7 pressures. I’m not sure about that, I did see him get some pressure but idk about 7 times. If he had any passion at all like Kwon, spawn, lvd he’d be a beast but as is he’s just a beauty.

  31. Dooshlarue Says:

GMC looked pretty good yesterday …… and I don’t like him.
But you sad suckers that think we’re the shizz are freaking delusional.
    We got LUCKY!
We could barely score on offense and we’re gifted 1st downs by penalties when we needed it
Let’s see how next week goes before we start Winston Wolfing each other.

  32. DB55 Says:

Your mother is a fckn loser. I can’t wait to meet you one day cheif. God willing.

  33. John Says:

HARD to get sacks when bears only threw three yard slants all game

  34. DB55 Says:

    Doo

Good point! TAKe away the 4 tos and the o scores 9 points

  35. John Says:

    WOW DB55 that’s a bit much

You’re a joke dude no one cares what you have to say. Go back to calling people stupid all day. That takes real talent and is super difficult. Just STFU already.

  39. Capt. Blighe Says:

  43. SB Says:

Interesting sh!t here on this thread where the Bucs just experienced there BEST Opening day in ……………….When……………? Jeesh you guys need pussie.

  44. Lamarcus Says:

    Hawaii

GMC.. What I expect from him is what I get the subject here pass rush and GMC is a pass rusher. He is not a run thumper like Gholston. I notice when gholston is the game he is an elite run stopper and he has more of an effect than GMC. This is how I know football watch cowboys saints panthers games last year. Without ghoston that’s when we sick even more. Bet that now

  45. SB Says:

Some of you guys haven’t been around long enough to remember what a true “Bend but don’t Break” Defense is;. It’s ok, just shut up and learn.

  46. Lamarcus Says:

    Hawaii

When it comes to pass rush u gotta call out GMC on that. He is pass rush specialist. But thats harsh. Let’s go deeper. Mike smith has never had an elite passer in his career??? His defenses never had one to get the job done. Great job bucs almost pitch a shut out given the circumstances I applaud 👏

  47. NOSBOS Says:

    D@$!! Another stafford overthrow.

  48. Dooshlarue Says:

Glennon had at least 8 passes dropped.
Figure that into his stat line and it goes something like 39/45 for 350 yards plus.
    Were they short of passes?
    Yes, but
He averaged about 11-12 yards per completion.
I think JW averaged about the same.

But you homers keep them thinking we’re world beaters after one game.

I’ll wait until game 5 or 6 before I get all Gaga.
I know we’re all hungry for a great team, but jeez, how about a little realism before re we get hung ho.

  49. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Lamarcus,

First of all, GMC is a disruptor, not necessarily a pass rusher. His job is to force pressure up the middle and to funnel the QB to the outside, where the ends should be. Without pressure from the middle, a QB can just step up in the pocket, avoiding the pressure from the edges. How many times do you see a QB do that to us when GMC is playing? Golston is a terrific run stopper, but his job against the run is much different from GMC. They are both very good at their jobs, but the two aren’t comparable. Golston has to set the edge. They work together as a team. If Golston is out, GMC won’t be able to funnel the back to him. If GMC is out, there won’t be an edge to set because the runner will go right up the gut. Again, they are both really good, but not comparable.

  50. SB Says:

We don’t have to be “World Beaters” after one game Doosh!
But people like you that can’t celebrate the Best Home Opener in Bucs History are just plain Ignorant.
I have sat through over 120 Home Games in my life. People like you depress me.

  51. P'cola Buc Says:

Would have loved to hear he reactions of Mike Smith if he were “mic-ed” up during the 1st Quarter when the Bucs had those 3 take aways.

  52. Dooshlarue Says:

I celebrated azzhole…..but I know that we ain’t there yet.

  53. Hawaiian Buc Says:

You guys can play the “if” game all you want. It doesn’t work that way. If Glennon doesn’t have 4 turnovers and 8 drops blah blah blah…….. But guess what, he did! Each play is a result of previous plays. Perhaps if he doesn’t have the drops, he chucks it downfield more and we get another pick. If he is putting points on the board, we might dial up some different pressure or change coverage. Maybe if the Bears don’t have 4 turnovers, we play differently on offense. There’s zero doubt Koetter isn’t going to open up the playbook and show Minnesota everything when we are up 26-0 at halftime. You don’t call the game the same way when you are dominating a team. I don’t care if the Bears had no drops and no turnovers, we would still beat them yesterday. We were the better team, the more disciplined team, and the hungrier team. End of story.

  54. SB Says:

Dude……….Outside of the Patriots, WHO is “there” ?
Your takes are Stupid. We are WAY improved. Why not rejoice in that instead of taking your Negative Nancy stand. YOU are what perpetuates us having a bad fanbase!

  55. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“but I know that we ain’t there yet.”

    ———

We don’t have to be there yet. It’s the first game of the season. You’re not supposed to be at your best now. However, as fans, we have to take games one week at a time (just like the players). Do we have issues that concern me? Absolutely. But even if we beat them 100-0, I would still have those concerns. Even if we beat Minnesota by 40, I still won’t be convinced. I won’t be convinced until we hold up the Lombardi again. But I will celebrate every single win, especially when we whip a team like that. In the NFL, any win is a good win. We are far from perfect, but we are finally as talented or more talented as most of the teams we will play this year.

  56. SB Says:

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Can you read what Hawaiian just wrote??????

  57. SB Says:

That is not good enough for some ‘fans’ Hawaiian. I sat through 0 and 26 followed by 14 losing seasons. Some fans don’t get it.

  58. Dooshlarue Says:

    No, I disagree.
We scored 3 points in the 2nd half and we we’re trying to score until less than 5 minutes remaining.
So, while 100-0 sounds good, albeit nearly impossible, your argument falls short Hawaiian.
Take away the Glennon gifts and we would have been lucky to win 9-7.

Just temper your expectations Bucs fans.
We are ALMOST there, which means we ain’t there yet.

Let’s see how we do this Sunday.

  59. Dooshlarue Says:

And for the record newcomers, I’ve been a fan since 1976.
Sat through it all until the Big Sombrero closed after we beat Detroit.
I know this team better than you think.

  60. celly Says:

    @Hawaiian…

Stop trying to explain what a 3-tech is supposed to do…. It’s futile.

It doesn’t matter if you say it, if coaches say it or if former players say it. People are going to believe whatever they want to believe.

    @doosh….

yards per completion isn’t a stat that matters. yards per attempt is what counts. And currenlty, Glennon is in the bottom 1/3 of the league.

I really can’t believe there are still people trying to defend Glennon and prop him up as a good QB. smh.

  61. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Dooshlarue

You always try to score, but at the same time you don’t call the game the same way up 26 as you do if the game is close. You don’t call the game the same way if you are up 7 versus if you are down 7. Koetter knew we were going to win that game. So did you and everyone else.

You don’t take away the Glennon gifts, because they happened. We made the plays. If you or I were out there playing, those gifts wouldn’t happen. Those gifts are a result of our play. You can go through every game and say “take away this and take away that” and of course you would have different results. However, it just doesn’t work that way.

We aren’t going 16-0. We will lose some games. There will be games where we won’t force turnovers and we will turn the ball over. Winston will give his fair share of gifts. But guess what – all that matters is the end result. Our record will show who we are. As of right now, we look really good. We will have moments where we look like a 2-14 team, and we will have moments where we look like a 14-2 team. It’s the way this game works. In that regard, I agree with you to temper our expectations. However, the “take way this” argument is beyond ridiculous. It’s pointless and ignorant.

  62. Dooshlarue Says:

Not defending Glennon, just stating what I saw.

  63. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @celly,

Yeah, I know. I don’t know why, but I just keep holding out hope that people will one day get it. I have way too much faith in humanity.

  64. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Glennon went full Blake Bortles, and people are over here making as if he killed us. SMDH

  65. celly Says:

    @Hawaiian…

That’s the one thing we disagree on…

As of right now, i predict our final record to be 16-0 and i’ll be rooting for them as if that were the case. When we lose a game, i’ll drop my prediction to XX-1.

Unrealistic? Probably. But until they show me that they can be beat, i expect them to win. 🙂

  66. NOSBOS Says:

Temper my expectations my @$$. You wanna temper yours feel free. What I can’t stand are @$$holes that live to kill the dreams of others f@$!

  68. Dooshlarue Says:

    False statement Brudda.

  69. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Dooshlarue,

Let me re-phrase: You always try to score if you have a competent coach”.

  70. SB Says:

Good to c u again Celly. And Doosh……re-read what I said to you. If you really want to support this team then shut up with the negativity and worrying about our First game. If you have been a fan since ’76 as I have then Name me a Better Opening Day win………………….

  71. Dooshlarue Says:

I don’t wish it, but all it will take is a 3-4 game losing streak to send your azz into silence NOSBOS.
It happens just about every year.
But glad to see you’re finally paying off your big mouth debts.

    Did you add interest?

  72. DB55 Says:

    Celly

So what do you tell Atkins who had 5 tackles and 2 sacks or Campbell with 4 sacks week 1 and 4 solo tackles yesterday? Stop! You’re doing to much. Don’t tackle just disrupt the play.

  73. NOSBOS Says:

Coach K told Fameis to break it down after he finish speaking to the team. So I should believe Fameis was serious when he then told the team get familiar with Minnesota this week because we’ll be going back later this season. I suppose he was just blowing smoke up his teamates @$$ huh.

  74. NOSBOS Says:

A 3 or 4 game losing streak is what your whack @$$ wishing for but it won’t haopen. F@$!boi.

“Sheldon Richardson is a 3 technique”

“Calais Campbell is a 3 technique”

“Tackles are an important stat for a 3 technique.”

Consider the source on this one.

  77. NOSBOS Says:

    Celly

So what do you tell Atkins who had 5 tackles and 2 sacks or Campbell with 4 sacks week 1 and 4 solo tackles yesterday? Stop! You’re doing to much. Don’t tackle just disrupt the play.

You tell them, “good job. keep doing what you’re doing”. Are you implying that sometimes, you don’t over-perform at your job on some days? Are we also going to ignore the fact that Campbell is listed as a DE in the Jags depth chart? Are you going to lie to me and tell me you watched every snap of the Jags/Texans game and proclaim that all his sacks came when he was lined up as a DT? Also, Campbell had ZERO sacks this week. Does that mean he didn’t do his job?

Atkins has played in 12 more games and has marginally better stats. There are actually some stats that McCoy bests Atkins in (Passes Defended and Run Stuffs). Is Atkins a good player? Absolutely. Is McCoy also a good player? Absolutely.

I literally have no clue how what you posted does anything but prove my point. So you did say it, but because Tampa Tony says you are correct, you are correct? Huh? Just how in the hell does a LB eat up a block for a D-lineman anyway? You know what, never mind. I’m not arguing with someone who is so clueless. Don’t even bother telling me.

Good to c u again Celly.

I’ve been around. Just got a new job at a DOPE company, I’m also working on my million dollar idea, plus i just had a baby. Well, not me, but you get the point. Also, I’ve come to the realization that commenting on here just gets my already high blood pressure even higher. So i just read the articles, lurk the comments and keep it moving.

In an unrelated note, my lil Man was wearing this on Sunday… I’m not superstitious or anything, but guess what he’ll be wearing next Sunday, lol.

  100. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Nobody said a 3 technique shouldn’t get tackles, but it isn’t that important. I promise you when the coaches are evaluating the film, they aren’t checking how many tackles McCoy got.

Richardson played in a 3-4 defense in New York as a defensive end. Of course you have no clue in the difference between a 34 and a 43, so me stating that goes far over your head. Campbell plays mostly defensive end, which is why he is listed as a DE. McCoy is the best 3 technique in the game, which is why he rarely plays any other position. Not to mention the fact that he doesn’t have the body of a 4-3 DE. Could he play a DE in a 3-4 – absolutely. But you can’t fault him because we don’t run a 43. But oh wait, of course you can.

Never said a DT only disrupts, not tackles. What i said was that the job of the 3-tech is to disrupt. Anything else is extra. . But that’s cool. If you want to cherry pick my comments to fit your narrative, I’m ok with that.

And are we to imply that youer’ in the meetings and know that when they have asked McCoy to play DE, he simply refuses. That’s dope. I hope to have the same team access as you one day. Do you know if they’re hiring Systems Engineers?
