“Predictable”

September 30th, 2017

“Rex, you don’t have DeMarcus Ware’s cell phone number, do you?”

Joe does not pretend to be any sort of super X’s and O’s guru. That’s why Joe talks to people in the NFL and not to dudes in dorm rooms in Ireland.

One guy Joe respects who also talks to folks in the NFL is Andy Benoit of SI.com. He has been breaking down the film of the Bucs-Vikings game last week and came to a damning find.

@Andy_Benoit: Film: what stood out was how well #Vikings aerial designs worked vs predictable #Bucs coverages. Keenum ID’d it; ball placement hit or miss.

“Predictable.”

That is perhaps the worst word one can use on a defense, short of “quit.” If any defense is predictable, it will get badly slashed, as the Bucs did Sunday.

Imagine what Eli Manning could do facing a predictable defense?

The Bucs defense is predictable mainly because Mike Smith is predictable. There’s no creativity, no disguise. Even when we blitz the LB’s or CB’s are creeping up and giving it away. I understand that Mike Smith is extremely shorthanded especially last week but there has been nothing impressive during his run as DC. I have a high standard when it comes to defense. You can thank Monte Kiffin and Tony Dungy for that.

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

So with all the backups in, and a rookie calling the plays for the defense, they are not supposed to be simplified and/or predictable???? what were they supposed to run????? It is what we saw the offense do last year when they were grabbing wr and rb off the street that did not know the full playbook and limited audible!!!!!!!!!

each week will get better as the rookie calling plays gets better and starting players are coming back!!!!!!!!!!!!

some don’t know the x’s and O’s and some seem to not know the “game” as well as common sense!!!!!!!!

P.S. ,,, Joe, how is the view from the ledge by the way?????????????

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Mike Johnson Says:

Hard nosed Buc critic here with the prediction of…BUCS 23 GIANTS !17. It won’t be easy. Nothing ever is for our Bucs. But the Bucs will play hard come Sunday.

  4. Pickgrin Says:

    Spence – Out injured
    Baker – Out sick
    McCoy – Hurt – hobbled
    Ayers – Hurt – hobbled
    Kwon – out – hammy
    LD54 – Out injured
    Grimes – out – shoulder
    Ward – out hurt
    Hargreaves – banged up

Duh – of course they were running simple schemes…

  5. Lamarcus Says:

We look like the Atlanta bucs out there. Hargarves can’t defend a slant route and Mike smith has to be the softest play caller out there. Cover 3? Cover nothing is what i see

  6. Doctor Stroud Says:

Until the defense gets healthy, the offense will have to carry the load. The Bucs will have to win in a shootout. Last possession wins!

  7. kgh4life Says:

It was predictable because Mike Smith didn’t trust his secondary, with Grimes out he wanted to play a “bend but don’t break” style of scheme, obviously didn’t go as planned. Seems Grimes will play this Sunday. We’ll see how Mike Smith defends against the Giant’s attack.

I kept waiting to see how this article was going to morph into the Doug Martin is unlikely to return theme. Speaking of predictable, but you got me this time.

  10. Eric Says:

Good thing we gave our DC a big contract so he didn’t sign as head coach for a different team.

  11. Lamarcus Says:

^^^^ we could of luck out and had this same defense somwe here on out schedule. Could of been a easy win against msmith defense

  12. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Last year you all were praising Smitty after winning 5 or 6th straight if you include the 1st game..we beat teams like Seattle and KC…

And now?? SMDFH at some of you!

  13. OneLove Says:

    GUESS WHAT LADIES!! IIIIM BAAAAAAAACK!!!

    UGGGHHHH!! IT’S LIKE DEJA VU!!

    NEWS FLASH!!!!

The Bucs are ranked near the VERY BOTTOM of the league against the pass and we have gone up against MIKE “I’M JUST A BACK UP” GLENNON and CASE “ME LOVE YOU LONG TIME” KEENUM!!!!

    *SOBS*

It feels like two years ago all over again!! Although, I LOVE how everyone is FOCUSING on our PLAYERS now instead of the SCHEME!! REMEMBER WHEN LOVIE’S SCHEME WAS THE PROBLEM?!?! BAHAHAHAHAH!!

THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE YEAR THAT WE WERE PLAYING CHESS INSTEAD OF CHECKERS RIGHT JOSEPH!??!?!

Oh, but I forgot, we were injured. We were also injured in Week 1 when Glennon threw for 300+ yards too RIGHT!!?!!?! Whatever, let’s keep the focus where it is though.. ON THE PLAYERS!!

Let’s do whatever we need to do to PREVENT another coaching staff FIRED AGAIN DAG GUMMIT!!!

LET’S MAKE THE BUCS GREAT AGAIN!! WOOOOOOOO!!!

  14. Roy T. Buford Says:

“Imagine what Eli Manning could do facing a predictable defense?”

We’re about to find out. Getting Grimes back fromthe walking dead doesn’t mean all the the suddent the Bucs are good on D, especially if GMC’s front crew refuses to “put hands on” people.

  15. Mike Johnson Says:

The Giants will score a lot with our Defense so banged up. In order for us to beat the Giants, Jameis is going to have to put us on his back and carry us. Question is…Can he? Will he? He’s gonna have to..run For his Life and create some plays.Great QB’s can and should ocassionally carry a team. We shall see come tomorrow fans! Batter up Jameis. Time to show us your failure or..greatness!

  16. Bird Says:

    Injuries bad.

At least we have so much depth in our secondary .

  17. Defense Rules Says:

@Pickgrin … “Duh – of course they were running simple schemes.” LOL, but mostly because Joe & too many others are so busy searching for scapegoats to take time to figure out what really went on. Realist nailed it … plug-and-play sounds good, but reality says that it takes time to for the engine to smooth out when replacement parts are added. Communications is critical like we saw in the 2nd half of last year, and it takes time for new players to get acclimated out there, especially on defense. It’s like Doctor Stroud wrote … “Until the defense gets healthy, the offense will have to carry the load.” And that starts tomorrow against the Giants, assuming that the Bucs rushing game improves (20 totes for Barber will git-er-done) and that the short passing game eats up the clock. Protect the ball Jameis, and the Bucs will win 31-24.

  18. Roy T. Buford Says:

Good thing the bye week will be here soon…

  19. LakeLandBuc Says:

I could have sword that was a Lovie defense on the field

    LakeLandBuc (kneeling)

  20. LakeLandBuc Says:

The bye week will be here in January…then it will be goodbye Bucs

  21. Lord Corn Says:

    Spot on Realist

  22. Lamarcus Says:

I never liked msmith he was a falcons coach and he brought that defense with him. Even in success I thought the player’s got hot not his 1000 yards a week defense strategy

  23. CautiousOptimism Says:

    “…people in the NFL…”
What a fun way to put stuff

  24. BucEmUp Says:

Anyone who expected Mike Smith to be a good DC was just buying into false hope. The fact that he worked with Del Rio means absolutely nothing. They run two completely different styles of defense and Mike Smith is JUST LIKE Lovie trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

PROMOTE JAY HAYES PLEASE AND SAVE THE SEASON!!!!!!!

Mike Smith cpuldnt save his own job in ATL by helping the defense get better. He sure as hell aint gonna be able to do it here.

    WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. BucEmUp Says:

Life of a Buc fan and One Love….NOT THIS GUY!!!!!

Worst DC hire they could have ever made.

The only thing that excites me is that Jason Licht holds the power….not Koetter. LIcht will not sit around and let Smith cost everyone they’re job like he did in Atlanta.

This is what I’m thinking….Koetter wanted Smith, Jason licht agreed, but went and got Jay Hayes as a backup plan. Hayes was the D-line coach in Cincy for 13 years, and he comes here to be a D-line coach?

I’m sure he got a nice raise, but I’m also thinking he wants a shot at being a DC. He’s had and still has my vote for the job. Smith is a nice guy, but som was Lovie. They’re tracks records should have them both sitting together in Lovies basement or over at Illinois because this guy sucks as a DC in the NFL.

  26. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @one love
200 yards and 3 touchdowns trumps 300 yards and only 1 touchdown every time.

  27. Bob in Valrico Says:

Predictable? What did anybody of sound mind expect ? With all the injuries at gametime and during the game, Its still going to be tough with our two star linebackers out.

  28. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @BucEmUp
GM Dimitrov deserves a lot of credit for the lack of success at the end
of Smith and Koetter tenure. He left so many holes on the team it was hard to put together a successful team. In fact, Atlanta had to hire two former GM’s to help Dimitrov straighten out the mess he made.

  29. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I’ve never been a “Mike Smith guy”, but he had the D pointed in the right direction last year. I think the only problem is injuries. I still think we still have better depth than most team, but look at what happened last week. We were already out 3 D starters, then Spence, McCoy, David and Ward got hurt. I don’t care what anyone says about depth. No team has the depth to replace 2 D starters at every level and still shut teams down. Not gonna happen. The only problem I have is the lack of a pass rush when healthy. We never hit in the draft on DEs and can’t find one in FA. The pass rush is the key to making the secondary look good. Once we solve the DE problem we’ll be ok.

  32. BigHogHaynes Says:

Pass Blocking is ok …Run Blocking is abysmal….Marpet. Sweezy, Pamphile must begin to figure it out! This Defence is not what the Realist thinks it is, this Defence lookes very much like that so called infamous LOVIE, FRIENDS & FAMILY DEFENCE……now we have the MICKEY MIKE MOUSE SHOW! Let’s start racking up some wins or REGRESSION will be the word of the year!!! Let’s go Coach K ….your time is now!!

  33. BucEmUp Says:

Last seasons defense was not solid….they were opportunistic. They looked really good based on some swayed stats from turnovers. Injures or not good coaching with NFL players doesn’t allow an nil backup to throw for a career day! I don’t care how you spin it happened and it’s going to continue to happen. This defense will sucks under Smith unless he changes things up….and so far he appears to be just as stuck in his ways as Lovie Smith. Koetter needs to pull his boy aside and give it to him straight….get it right or get going.
