The Kareem Hunt Freakout

September 8th, 2017

The pride of Toledo, drafted two picks after Chris Godwin, set an NFL record last night.

Only one NFL game is in the books this season and already Bucs general manager Jason Licht has gotten a ton of head shakes sent in his direction over the last 10 hours.

Why? Because Chiefs rookie running back Kareem Hunt, a third-round pick, set an NFL record last night against the Patriots — and the Bucs don’t have a dynamic runner from a deep stable of 2017 rookie RBs.

Hunt’s 246 yards from scrimmage was the best performance ever by a running back in his NFL debut. Hunt had 148 yards on the ground from just 17 carries, and added 98 yards receiving on just five catches. His three touchdowns made him an instant fantasy football hero.

The dude looked so dangerous.

Kansas City traded up to get Hunt, two picks after Tampa Bay snatched wide receiver Chris Godwin.

This had the Licht haters and the Doug Martin realists freaking out on social media during last night’s game, and filling up Joe’s inbox with I-told-you-sos. Some of these people would blame Hurricane Irma on Licht, or perhaps the $10 warm beers at the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway.

Joe has a message for these folks: Calm the hell down! The Bucs needed Godwin every bit as much as they need a guy like Hunt. And Godwin appears to be the real deal.

For Licht’s sake, and for harmony among Bucs fans, Joe sure hopes Dalvin Cook doesn’t roll the Saints for 200 yards on Monday Night Football in a few days.

Over the long term Godwin will be the better pick in my opinion. Running backs tend to have shorter careers than WRs.

  2. CautiousOptimism Says:

Did they need Justin Evans more than Kareem Hunt? But hey, we have McNichols who is going to make us all forget about Doug Martin, right?
    Oh, wait…

  3. NOSBOS Says:

I’m good with his decision but Rome I cringe when people talk about shelf lives. To me you get what gives you fastest chance to win a chip. When all the juice is gone with that one you simply find a newer version bro.

  4. NOSBOS Says:

Hunt and DC lead college football last season both with 98 forced missed tackles. Hmm,wait to you see the DC show this weekend.

  5. BucfanInCa Says:

Might be a different story if KC doesn’t lose Ware in the preseason.

  6. NOSBOS Says:

For those of you panzies that pre checked our meeting with pats this as an automatic lost you might wanna re-evaluate your thinking process. They gave up over 500 yards last night. All summer I heard “they’ve re-tooled,they won the summer” yea right. brady and that defense look like trash.

  7. dooshlarue Says:

The jury is still out on Justin Evans but I think we got lucky to snag Godwin. I think he is going to be really good.

So it looks like we’re set at:

    QB
    WR1-5
    LB
    K
    P

Next year I think we go after DL, OL, RB and CB in the draft.
Hopefully we draft a top DE and DT in the first 2 rounds.

I have no doubt that Licht is working his plan.
Don’t freak out crybabies. Building a long term winning franchise takes a little time and we’re right on track.

  8. NOSBOS Says:

Ya see Rock,he bleeeeds. Drago does bleed.

  9. patrickbucs Says:

If anything this shows you that you DO NOT draft a rb in the first round. Ajayi was drafted in the 5th round. It’s one game and he looked great.

NOBOS I’m sure Dalvin Cook would of run circles around Bama as well lol!!!

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Hunt had one good game. Big deal.

  11. Eric Says:

Lay off Licht, who needs Dalvin Cook?

He messed up on the cone drill at the combine…..

I feel a lot more comfy with our backs.

  12. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And as far as our running game…let’s just wait to see if it is actually bad before deciding it is. A good oline can make any RB look great.

  13. Tnew Says:

I have went on record about how I believe Licht is a great GM, but anytime a team gets locked into a position, they don’t fare as well. I think Licht was bent to take a safety in round two. Look at how he handled that position this offseason and it is apparent he was deeply concerned over safety. I don’t mind any other pick this year including McNichols, people acted like he was a first round pick, around here. I felt it a mistake to cut him thst early for one reason. If a running back goes down in the first two games, the Bucs are so thin now. Channing Ward was the spot I’d have given up and maybe Will Clarke makes me rethink all of this.

Regarding Kareem Hunt, he was my third round choice, but Godwin was my second.

I think our draft really didn’t go how Licht envisioned it. OJ80 and Godwin were just too good to pass up at their slot. Still a very good draft!

Regarding the running game. If the Bucs get 11 games from Martin this year, they will make the playoffs.

  14. Tnew Says:

    Patrick… Great point

  15. stpetebucsfan Says:

When does it stop? Are people’s egos so insecure that they desperately need to come on a sports blog to say I told you so. Really?

Hindsight is 20-20 and there is NO team…and I mean NO team in this league that couldn’t play the…IF we have drafted this guy and not that guy…yadda…yadda..yadda. And the same goes for free agents…if only we had signed this one.

Chris Godwin is the real deal. Kareem Hunt fumbled his first play from scrimmage then finished with a nice game. It’s ONE game. I suspect they are both going to be good players.

Meanwhile last year we had no running game to speak of because our “star” had a drug problem. Our passing game was severely limited because we had ONE bonafide NFL WR and a competent TE and no deep threat.

This year we have arguably the best receiving group in the league with a deep threat and depth. We’ll have to scramble to get through three games at RB but Quizz and Sims and Barber should be able to keep us afloat. I’m not even a huge Doug Martin fan but he IS a very solid RB when he’s healthy and motivated. He appears to be both this season.

Could we at least play a few games before we make all these pronouncements?

  16. NOSBOS Says:

Pat ion know what game you were watching, but bama hardly look like world beaters to me. We choke the game away the start of the second half on special teams. We shut down scarborough and were handling hurts. To answer you. It depends on whether or not jimbo would even run the d@$! Foot

  17. NOSBOS Says:

And like you mentioned that night GOAT Derwin James is an animal.

  18. 813bucboi Says:

hunt looks to be the real deal….I think bill under estimated this kid thinking theres no way a rookie rb can beat us….this was the first time in a long time i’ll seen bill get out coached….andy reid smoked bill….

regarding licht, my beef was passing up great value rbs….I would’ve taken hunt with no problem but other rbs like d.foreman, j.conner, m.mack and others where their to be had but he reached on a safety when we could’ve gotten d.walker and traded up for a linebacker when we had decent depth with glanton and bond….

with that said, yeah, its only one game but if doug gets banged up or is inconsistent we’re in big trouble….barber looks ready for an expanded role but we’ll see….GO BUCS!!!!

  19. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    NOSBOS
    Yes he is.

  20. NOSBOS Says:

And for the record that was clearly pass interference at the goal line before the half ended but you can’t expect to get that call when facing saban at that moment on that stage. Would’ve like to see jimbo go ballistic but hey it’s water under the bridge now.

  21. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Crafty licht knows more than NFL fans and the draft experts bucs need edge rushers, smart guy takes kicker, bucs need edge rushers or RB, kooky licht outsmarts league again and gets justin evans… lichts kooky draft got marpet the rests are big time misses and jury out on hargreaves

  22. Cobraboy Says:

I’d rather have OJ Howard than any of the RB’s in the draft, period.

Big Uglies win games, but RB’s, WR’s and QB’s get the glory.

  23. DB55 Says:

The kid put on a show! One of the best games I’ve seen in a while. Alex was killing it. The best part was the bewildered look on bellicheat and prince Brady’s faces. Lmao

  24. Defense Rules Says:

Coulda – Woulda – Shoulda. Draft is over … that ship sailed. Bucs got the best TE in the draft (OJ Howard) in Rnd 1 & what could be the best WR in the draft (Godwin) in Rnd 2. Throw in Beckwith for good measure & that was a pretty good draft. And besides, how many REALLY saw Kareem Hunt as a top RB?

  25. 813bucboi Says:

Pat ion know what game you were watching, but bama hardly look like world beaters to me. We choke the game away the start of the second half on special teams.

ion what game you were watching but bama man handled them boys….from start to finish….they ran the ball at will while stuffing the run….DJ did nothing special….Alabama’s run defense held the Noles to an average of negative one yard per carry. Cam Akers was the team’s rushing leader, with a whopping 30 whole yards.

to say they aint look like world beater is BS….they choked the live out of yall…lol….GO BUCS!!!!

  26. Anthony Says:

Such nonsense. There are many successful players that were on the board over the years when the bucs were on the clock…. who cares. We didn’t select them. This infatuation joe has with what could have been is so stale.

  27. Maze Says:

Lots of stupid fans out there

  28. Pickgrin Says:

I was perhaps the biggest advocate predraft for the Bucs to draft Kareem Hunt in the 3rd Rd.

Tell ya what though – when I saw that Godwin was still on the board just before our 3rd rd pick came up – my thoughts of RB value were out the window and I was laser focused on us landing Godwin.

Pretty sure Jason Licht had a similar experience.

Godwin was a total steal at #84. Dude has been flashing 1st rd talent from day one since he walked in the door at OBP.

I’m not upset at all that we didn’t draft a RB higher this year. We filled other needs and got excellent approaching extreme value on at least 3 players in Howard, Godwin and Beckwith.

If Justin Evans develops as expected and solidifies a starting role in the backfield within a couple years – then Licht has hit another Grand Slam. 4 picks – 4 starters. Twice in the last 4 drafts. That’s off the charts good drafting and to whine about positions he’s not yet devoted high draft picks to yet is just that – whining.

There will be some good RBs coming out next year to consider drafting.

Meanwhile – I’m not unhappy with our current stable of backs assuming that Martin will be here and can stay healthy. Perhaps those aren’t the most stable of assumptions – LOL.

No seriously. I think we’re OK at RB for this year. It’s honestly more about how the OLine performs than the backs because Quizz, Barber and Sims can all make nice gains on the ground if the Oline is opening holes for them.

The one thing I don’t understand is why didn’t we sign Adrian Peterson? That one is a headscratcher to me considering half our offense working out with him in the offseason – the positive reports from Jameis afterwards and the cheap deal AP wound up signing with the Saints. Wonder if Jason will ever care to comment on why he passed on bringing AP in. I’m sure the question will come up if AP looks good in gold unless Martin looks better.

  29. Guzzie Says:

Everyone but Licht saw Hunt is a special talent, and the questionable decision was taking Justin Evans, our 4th string Safety, not Godwin, over one of the many, many talented RBs available, oh well

  30. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Lol leave it to Bonzai to fall in love with Derel Walker based off a crappy CFL highlight tape, but complete denounce a truly special/ historic performance from a player that’s actually very, very good.

  31. NOSBOS Says:

Maybe so but don’t get me started them criminals from uf homie.

  32. SOFIERCE Says:

Guys you have it all wrong this does not have anything to do with hunt… this is simply part of the New England Patriots curse this year!

We are about to witness some of the most historic unprecedented calamities that is the three ring $hit show of the New England Patriots season this year.

When Doug Martin runs 200 yards on New England this year don’t be so quick to expect that every game because you’re just playing a cursed team.

  33. JGA Says:

Well guess what, 31 teams passed on Tom Brady for 5 rounds. Some of those teams have won Super Bowls since then.

Also, in case you missed it, the Patriots defense was so horrible, it allowed Alex Smith to look like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning combined.

  34. biff barker Says:

We experimented on a late round RB and whiffed. It’s part of football. We’ll find another back or someone on the roster has to be better.

OJ, CG and Beckwith were all positions of need that we couldn’t pass up.

    Good for Hunt.

  35. NOSBOS Says:

hurt was 10 of 18 for 96 yards. Scarborough rushed 15 times for 40 yards. 2.7 yard average. Again don’t get me started on your gaytors dude.

  36. holymoly13 Says:

Who cares ! Belicheat and the butt pirates lost. Brightens my day .

  37. NOSBOS Says:

And make no mistake we gone whip y’all @$$ again.

  38. patrickbucs Says:

Bama’s defense looked great, not their offense. They toyed with the FSU line and QB. FSU has a great d as well, but not Bama’s level yet, just below. The whole point was about Cook for NOBOS, not anything personal against FSU. Cook wouldn’t of done anything against the Tide if he was in that game, zero.

You need players around you in the NFL to succeed at the rb position period. Let’s see if our rb’s do or not this year, last year is done. Think we can all be a bit more optimistic I know that I am. If not there is plenty of rb’s in the draft or off the street to give them a shot.

  39. NOSBOS Says:

Man please.. That’s your opinion you can have it. Most of that 96came on the play they caught us slippin to ridley deep. They’r d line wasn’t presuring Fran they blitz all game to get pressure. DC would’ve run wild on that D.

  40. Bucamania Says:

I’ll keep Godwin. RBs are easier to find. He had a nice game though! Great to see the Pats get whooped. 16-0 my a$$.

  41. NOSBOS Says:

You might wanna go rewatch it when they weren’t blitzing Fran was completing passes at will. If the refs make the call on the pass interference before the half we prolly go in 14/10 and might be having a different convo. Don’t matter none now tho, long as we whip yo gaytors @$$ (AGAIN) I’M GOOD.

  42. NOSBOS Says:

That lost 7 starters to the nfl if you think they’ll be same dominant unit this season you crazy. Wouldn’t surprise me none tho most yal think a 40 year old brady about to be mvp. Yea right.

  43. Tom S. Says:

At the time the two head scratching picks were Justin Evans, a safety known for having trouble tackling in the 2nd round and Kendell Beckwith a slow footed LBer coming off of an ACL injury in the late 3rd.

While Beckwith may be good and lucky enough to start, Just Evans is buried deep on the depth chart and is not looking like a smart pick at this point. So when you point to this RB class to potentially be an all-timer a big need at RB and Licht taking a player that showed an inability to do something, like tackle, that safeties sort of need to do in college. You have a recipe for a ton of second guessing.

  44. NOSBOS Says:

It’s easy to shut someones run game down when tthe hc only rushes 16 or 17 times. Recruit the kid don’t play him til the second half. Dumb@$$ gameplan. I feel dumb explaining it to you brainiacs.

  45. Craig Trigueiro Says:

    Joe
Are you suffer from post concussion confusion? What RB depth? We had some depth WR without Godwin.

  46. mike n Says:

Hunt is the reason they call the Roberto pick the worst in NFL history. You can draft someone with big potential and if it works out you have a stud like Hunt or Goodwin, if it doesn’t work out… it happens but you had upside. Or you can draft a kicker, which a kicker can be had for free. #sostupidjason…#Ijust cantletitgo. Goodwin is going to be a good one but damn did that kid look amazing. Kudos to him, he fumbled his 1st carry and just kept on going.

  47. Gt40bear Says:

Not second guessing Godwin in third, kid’s gonna be a beast. Now Evans in second istead of Hunt? THAT is an arguement to be had! Just have to wait & see. Can play the what if game forever w/Bucs & drafts.

  48. BushidoEvans Says:

Bro Bucs fans need to shut up…really? He’s one guy out of hundreds if thats the case then they should be shaking their heads at the other 30 GMs that didnt pick the kid either. Really its like listening to children every year. After the 1st round the draft is hardly a science. We can’t draft every single impact player in the draft. Hey Bucs fans get used to other teams having rookies that become stars because the Bucs can’t draft them all. Get over it. These idiots would’ve been saying the same thing about Godwin if he was drafted to another team, gtfoh.

  49. JameisWin55 Says:

We could of had Godwin in the 2nd instead of Evans and still got Hunt and Beckwith in the 3rd
    OJ-1st
    Godwin-2nd
    Hunt-3rd
    Beckwith-3rd
Would have set us up nice for the future

  50. Bucsfanman Says:

I’ve always loved the “I told you so” crowds. If you are so great at predicting future success, can you please give me this week’s lotto numbers! Please!
Hunt looked good though. For that matter, so did Alex Smith. Patrick who?!

  51. Joe Says:

I’ve always loved the “I told you so” crowds. If you are so great at predicting future success, can you please give me this week’s lotto numbers!

Wasn’t like no one advocated for taking a running back higher or that Kareem Hunt might be a solid pick. Check out all the stories Joe wrote about him. Hell, the Bucs even had a private work out with the guy.

Only ostriches thought the Bucs were good at running back. Outside of an edge rush, it is the weakest unit on the team.

  52. DB55 Says:

Seriously though, let’s be honest, wasn’t Licht brought here to be a stooge for Lovie Smith? And doesn’t it seem like when Robinson left the brains of the ops left with him?

  53. Jimmy Says:

Twinkle toes Sims > Devonta Freeman.

Dummy/quitter/Snoop wannabe Jeremy McNichols > several running backs.

Throwing all your chips into the pot for Molly Hamster.

Licht might be a very good GM but it’s pretty clear he needs to brush up on eyeing running back talent.

  54. Drew Says:

Is it possible New England’s Defense is really weak this year?

  55. 1sparkybuc Says:

I liked Hunt in the draft. It didn’t happen. So what. Licht has a higher percentage of success than any other GM in franchise history IMO, and I believe he and Koetter will prove to be the best combination we have ever had. They can’t fix everything in one (2) off-season together. It’s a work in progress. They are just getting started, and they are already competitive. The Bucs have the talent and ability to beat any team in the NFL. You don’t have to have a long memory to go back to a time when they were lucky to beat anybody. They’ve come a long way in a short time. This team is no joke.

  56. Pickgrin Says:

    DB55 Says:
“doesn’t it seem like when Robinson left the brains of the ops left with him”

If that were true – then Robinson would have picked the top 5 talent at TE with his 18th pick instead of a late 1st round talent at CB.

Still on the anti-Licht crusade Eh? SMH

Jason Licht is proving he is a top 5 in the league General Manager and you want to complain about him? Get a clue.

    But wtf do I know??

  57. 813bucboi Says:

yall aint do nothing but get choked out….same thing we gone do to yall in nov…..yall got no qb…no defense….no weapons…this will be the 3rd year in a row yall wont make it to yall conference championship…..yall will be lucky to win 6 games this year….lol….GO BUCS!!!!

  58. Bobby Says:

Godwin is going to be better than good. This kid is #1 receiver material. Very happy with the pick.

  59. 813bucboi Says:

It’s easy to shut someones run game down when tthe hc only rushes 16 or 17 times. Recruit the kid don’t play him til the second half. Dumb@$$ gameplan

NAWL….dumbo knew the kid wasn’t ready to face bama….they aint wake forest or duke….this is big boy football….dumbo was smart not throwing that kid into the fire….he broke just like the upper classman in front of him that started the game….lol….GO BUCS!!!!

  60. 813bucboi Says:

That lost 7 starters to the nfl if you think they’ll be same dominant unit this season you crazy.

our defense had 7 players drafted and we scored 2 TD’s…..man please!!!….yall defense wasn’t sh!t to begin with….derwin james looked average at best and he was suppose to be yall savior….GO BUCS!!!

  61. Lord Cornelius Says:

You can’t get it all in one draft.

If you can’t link to a post of you saying “we need to take K Hunt in R2 he’s going to be a star” then you should probably not be talking.

  62. NOSBOS Says:

But we’ll whip y’all @$$ again. Bank on it.

  63. lambchop Says:

Way too early to anoint Kareem Hunt as a solid RB. It was the first game of the season and he took advantage of a hapless Pats D. KC OL deserves a LOT of the credit. They gave Alex Smith the chance to look at all his reads before getting pummeled to the ground or forced into a pick. I don’t know if we have that kind of OL here.

Sometimes getting rid of your veterans (NE) and calling the next man up catches up to you. Although, I’m sure the Pats D will get much better before the next game. Hunt looked slow when he hit the next level of the D, but he takes good angles and runs north to south for the most part. He’s a good RB that will definitely help the Chiefs, but I don’t seem him dominating all season long.

Justin Evans is a project with a high ceiling if only he can become a sure handed tackling machine. He will learn a lot from TJ Ward, as will the other safeties. Ward is aggressive but he has a high football IQ that keeps him in position to make plays.

Our draft is not going to show up a whole lot this season with splashy plays. It’s going to be things that the average person won’t even notice, but I’m pretty sure we got 3 solid rookies that are going to hold down dominating starting roles for a long time (Juice, Beckwith, and Godwin).

And the gamble on McNichols was no big deal, it was a low draft pick and I’m sure the Bucs only picked him up because of Coach K. What I’m peeved about with that pick is Coach K should have known whether McNichols could pick up the playbook or not. I mean it doesn’t get any easier scouting a player than a kid from the school you used to coach. It’s not like McNichols was a first day pick that coaches from Boise State would hide their true feelings about him – especially to an ex-Boise State HC. He could have utilized his connections a LOT better than that.

  64. 813bucboi Says:

If the refs make the call on the pass interference before the half we prolly go in 14/10 and might be having a different convo

that’s all part of the game….I could say the same thing when the refs thru a bogus flag on the center after m.thompson broke loose for 40yards….we would’ve been up 24-20 a would’ve had all the momentum…but its all part of the game….yall aint got nothing….GO BUCS!!!

  65. NOSBOS Says:

Our D wasn’t ish??? Again hurt 10 of 18 96 yards, scarborough 15 rush attempts 40 yards 2.7 yard average. At least make little since dude. And let me repeat we gone whip y’all @$$ AGAIN.

  66. 813bucboi Says:

BET!!!!…you still owe me from when we drafted VHG and when I told you we aint want no sorry a$$ cook….I told you a UF player would be drafted before that trash….GO BUCS!!!!

  67. Cobraboy Says:

One game and Hunt is like TGOAT.

    C’mon, people!

  68. cmurda Says:

Weapons for Winston wasn’t just a rallying cry. It was necessary. Godwin was in a position of need with good value. The man hasn’t played a game yet. Hunt was impressive in the game but first of all the Pats defense is meh at best. Secondly, Hunt’s success is largely attributed to Alex Smith owning the Pats defense and opening gaping holes for Hunt. Before, we get all the hindsighters clamoring for an apocalypse, let’s at least wait for 4 to 5 games to happen.

  69. 813bucboi Says:

if yall defense was so strong, why did they score 24 points….yall aint beating no FLA team this year….bank on that!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  70. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

Martin will go for 25o yds. Vs the dumpster run d of the pats!!!

  71. NOSBOS Says:

Lets just hope all those criminals currently on your roster will be eligible when the game comes around. UF uUniversity of Felons. Just like a GAYtor to be all on another program’s nutsac.

  72. NOSBOS Says:

    Oh and lastly,we gone whip y’all @$$… AGAIN😀.

Everyone but Licht saw Hunt is a special talent, and the questionable decision was taking Justin Evans, our 4th string Safety, not Godwin, over one of the many, many talented RBs available, oh well

Everyone like who? All the GM’s that wanted to wait until the 4th round to draft him or the Chiefs who passed on him twice?

  74. Eric Says:

Since Lovie was fired, the drafts have been mediocre at best.

    Simple as that.

  75. unbelievable Says:

LOL Hunt looked great, but it was 1 game, and the first game of the season! Everyone calm down.

Also you FSU and UF fans are just insufferable sometimes…

  76. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

813bucboi is officially the dumbest person on this site.
Gators had 2 pick 6s against an overrated team with only 5 returning starters.
U talk about FSU not having a QB? The last time the gators had any kind of QB was tebow. And he plays baseball now. I would literally bet my house that FSU will beat Florida.

  77. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

And u must not have watched that game at all. When ur special teams gives bama a short field (inside the 15 twice) they are gonna score.

  78. ndog Says:

This issue is not Chris Godwin pick the issue is the 3rd string safety in the 2nd round instead of the 5 running backs that could have been a starter for us. I have already said it 15 times on this site, that pick is going to kill us this year and haunt us for the next 4-5 years. We picker a safety that we are so scared to play that we gave 5 million to 30 year old that just got cut instead of a RB that would very probably be starting for us when we have a play action based offense.

  79. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Ndog. Please. The same goes for all of you who are judging a draft class before we play 1 game.

Besides, you didn’t think any of the running backs besides Cook were any good anyway.

Remember? You said that Kareem Hunt wasn’t even going to be as good as Jacquizz Rodgers. And that Joe Mixon wasn’t going to be as good as Charles Sims.

My money says that T.J. Ward is going to be a terrific mentor for Justin Evans. And that he will become a solid starter as he develops. Just because a rookie doesn’t make an immediate impact doesn’t mean they are a bust.

  80. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Celly for the win!!!

  81. Rod Munch Says:

Two things at work… he’s a runningback for a Reid offense, that means he’s going to get a lot of good stats, and more importantly the Pats looked pathetic – you had bad tackling, blown coverages, etc. Hunt will have a huge stat year but the fact is ANY RB in Reid’s system will have at least a very good stat year if they stay healthy.
