Dolphins Watch: 7 Days

September 3rd, 2017

Uplifting news from Miami

It’s all about opening day next Sunday, Sept. 10, against Miami at Hard Rock Stadium. Joe regularly will bring you a nugget to two on the Dolphins to prime you for the big day (and the night before) in Miramar.

Gerald McCoy is always smiling, but his grin should be even wider this morning.

Word out of the Palm Beach Post is that undrafted Jesse Davis, with zero career playing time after two years on practice squads, is in the mix to start at left guard for Miami against the Bucs.

Can you say match-up nightmare for the Dolphins? At least it should be, with McCoy healthy and bringing a get-off Davis has never experienced. Yes, Joe suspects Davis didn’t see a guy like McCoy at the University of Idaho.

What makes this a bit more uplifting for Bucs fans is that Davis is in line to replace injured projected starter Ted Larsen. He’s journeyman former Buccaneer who has been with the Cardinals and Bears since leaving the Bucs after the 2013 season.

The Dolphins are going to try and pound the rock and the Bucs are trying to revive their run defense, which was subpar last season.

Miami’s situation at left guard should be a boon to Tampa Bay.

Joe is right, on paper this should be to the Bucs advantage, however, these match ups rarely work out the way we hope.

  2. Canadabucsfan Says:

McCoy and a blitzing Levonte will take care of that guard. lol

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Isn’t GMC our Left DT?….>That would mean he would normally line up against an opponent’s Right Guard…..correct?

  4. Canadabucsfan Says:

I always thought he was our right DT. I could have sworn he rotatres but primarily stays on the right. In all practise hard knocks hes blowing up the right side. (come on smith lol)

  5. Canadabucsfan Says:

sorry for all of those typos haha. Maybe a few too many wobbly pops last night.

  6. Lamarcus Says:

We heard this one before. I think the undrafted guy wins this match up.

  7. stanglassman Says:

I see that Bobo Wilson was offered a practice squad spot.

Not to steal the thread. Go Bucs, beat the dolphins..

  8. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Lamarcus

WHY would you think this. Is there any rational explanation?

  9. Canadabucsfan Says:

haha Stanglassman.. its ok. we all do it from time to time.. but I am happy he did get that, regardless of attitude, he isnt a terrible backup to have in case of (knock on wood) injury.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Canadian

I just watched some GMC highlights…..it appears he moves around and plays both sides…..anyone else know his standard position?

  11. Lamarcus Says:

Yes. Too many let downs. When there is a favorable matchup for us we seem to blow it. On paper it looks like GMC should take over video game style then in reality we blow it. When this stops I will choose accordling

  12. Cobraboy Says:

Folks are totally missing the Big Picture: the game time environment.

This game—IF it’s even played next Sunday—will be in horrible conditions, with wind over 25mph and possibly rain.

Irma is predicted to be due east passing north of the Bahamas at game time. The Miami beaches will be getting whacked with 11′ waves and I suspect a lot of storm surge flooding in the region.

Check for yourself on my favorite weather site: http://www.windy.com. A very cool site for graphic weather. click your cursor over Hard Rock and see the conditions by the hour.

This game will be decided by the run game, defense and turnovers. The wind, combinde with Winston’s gun-slinger mentality, spooks me.

  13. James Walker Says:

Jesse Davis is a farmers kid. Cornbread strong and hungry to prove it. He plays whistle to whistle. DO NOT underestimate him.

  14. Cobraboy Says:

DC Smith will put McCoy where he can do the most damage” “flexibility.” This ain’t Lovie Snith’s defense.

  15. Cobraboy Says:

I won’t be at all surprised if the game is delayed until the evening. The weather should be much better at 8pm than 1pm.

  16. Steve Says:

Proofreading is a lost art !! I don’t send an email, let alone publish an article without doing it !!

  17. TheBucsAnthem Says:

That’s a bit baffling starting an essentially a rookie (no true game time experience) against the likes of GMC.

If GMC doesn’t dominate this kid, then you’ll understand why there are naysayers to GMC.

  18. OneBucNut Says:

To my BFFS (Buc Fan Friends)….GMC does not play LDT or RDT, he plays 3 Technique…which has him shading whichever OG that GMC & Coach Smith believe is best.

And Lamarcus….get ready to choose accordingly.

    Go Bucs!

  19. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Jesse Davis clip:

You cannot really tell from the few plays if he’s a decent player……but he looks better in run blocking than pass protection……I expect Mike Smith to exploit this all game long if he does start at LG

  20. Lamarcus Says:

    OK I’ll wait….

  21. Bucamania Says:

WTF Irma. We’ve waited months for this opening day and now you show up.

  22. 1Gr8Buc Says:

TBBF- He is a 3 tech DT. Which means he lines up depending on what the offense is showing which could be either side of the line, which is why you some times see the DTs flip flop on the line. 3 tech means the DT will line up on the outside shoulder of the guard.

If the offense is showing stacked to one side he will usually line up at the 3 tech on that side.

  23. SB Says:

I have a sinking feeling that Irma is going to hit the US as a Four! I hope I’m wrong because this country will be Phucked

  24. Bobby M. Says:

As far running…or even passing…the plays can be designed to go away from McCoy and still be effective

  25. Canadabucsfan Says:

Jonathan Williams just got cut from buffalo. May be worth a tryout. Decent Runner.

  26. NJBucsFan Says:

Put a claim in on williams

  27. SB Says:

Is Anyone else that is in the JoeBucsFan.com Pickem league having trouble with the page? I can’t make any selections. I Emailed the fourletter about the problem.

  28. Canadabucsfan Says:

i hope they do NJ. Truly. Hes an upgrade, i love Barber buy williams is better.

  29. mark2001 Says:

McNichols to 49ers practice squad? What scout couldn’t figure out that this guy is as dumb as a stump? You would think something like that would be in the write up, wouldn’t you?

  30. Cobraboy Says:

@mark2001: I’m not at all sure the Bucs had any desire to bring McNichols back.

  31. Cobraboy Says:

Fabio signed to the Bucs PS.

  32. mark2001 Says:

Cobra…didn’t say we did…I said he was unable to understand the playbook and his responsibilities….he wasn’t bright enough to be an NFL running back in a complex system. Someone missed that in scouting.

  35. orlbucfan Says:

Be interesting to see a ballgame played against the backdrop of a Hurricane. Hate Fitzgerald–Fameis has to stay healthy!

  36. unbelievable Says:

    @SB-

I had no problem making my picks.

  37. godzilla13 Says:

Just think about it. With LVD, Kwon, VH3, Grimes, TJ and Tandy along with GMC, Ayers, Smith and Spence, this defense is going to be special.

  38. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

JJ Wilcox a steeler… ol licht and his 8-8 moves

  39. Canadabucsfan Says:

JJ wilcox just got traded to the steelers. we got next years 6th rounder and we gave 2019 7th .

  40. NOSBOS Says:

godzilla they sleep. But about to be awaken.

  41. NOSBOS Says:

T.J of the same ilk Eric Berry is. The same Eric Berry many here were crooning for not too long ago. These players realize something is happening over here and are deciding to sign here for a reason.

  42. Ndog Says:

Godzilla still no pass rush and the only play makers are Kwon and Grimes. Hopefully LVD if they let him attack .

  43. Steven007 Says:

Cobra, thanks for saying the only thing that really matters at this point. Got to this thread late. Irma is the primary concern for next week. The game will play itself out and I actually think we have the advantage but who knows when this game will be played? Too many variables at this point. And the NFL is a notoriously unreliable in terms of making a timely decision regarding the game.

  44. NOSBOS Says:

Ndog maybe you should read Pete’s post dispelling your lame theory.

  45. NOSBOS Says:

Can be found at 10:38 on the Outrage in Denver thread.

  46. NOSBOS Says:

He was even gracious enough to do the leg work and left a link for ya. Thanks Pete.

  47. Cobraboy Says:

Now projecting 35mph of wind at game time.

  48. RonMonster Says:

this game may be rescheduled later in the day on Sunday or moved to Thursday. #hurricaneIrma

  49. SB Says:

@RonMonster…..I was planning on heading to TX to do some storm clean up until I saw Irma on the Horizon. If it hits Fla then I am not going to Tx. I will go to Fla and get to go to my first Bucs game in 11 years!

  50. Rod Munch Says:

I don’t think Miami is going to try to ground and pound, I think they’re going to be airing it out. Cutler looked pretty good in the preseason and he lit up the Eagles, who are supposed to have a good secondary. Cutler has much much much better WRs than what he’s had in Chicago the last few years and anyone that thinks this game will be easy – I don’t think so.

One positive is that I forgot they went to Home Depot and bought out all the tarp they had on hand and built a “roof” for the stadium – so it won’t be raining there. I totally forgot about that – so instead it’s going to be like 143 degrees with 99% humidity – thank goodness the Bucs still practice outdoors and should be mostly used to it.

  51. Rod Munch Says:

For those wondering the hurricane is going to turn out to sea like all those storms do – the computer models this far out are worthless and have had huge swings in the last 24 hours. For example yesterday they had this storm completely missing the US and turning out to sea, then today they have it going into Miami on Sunday. The next round will probably again turn it north… then south, then so on and so on. We really won’t have a good idea if it will even hit the US at all until Thursday or Friday when it’s near Puerto Rico. But I’m giving it like a 98% chance of turning out to seat, once you get into September there is almost always a cold front coming through that will deflect it away from us right into Bermuda. So if you live in Bermuda I’d be worried.

  52. Not there yet Says:

If the dolphins are smart they’ll be like everyone else that beat us last year. Double McCoy because you can single block everyone else. There might be a few splash plays by the other guys but not enough to make a difference. I’m really hoping the defensive line was ineffective because they didn’t scheme at all.

Can’t wait until game 1 just to see real action, I know this will be a great season go bucs

  53. SB Says:

The first storm I worked after was Andrew in ’92. Since then I have worked almost every storm that needed it along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. I PRAY that Irma doesn’t hit The Government can’t afford Harvey. Let alone a double whammy

  54. Doctor Stroud Says:

The Dolphins have announced that Anthony Steen is in at left guard. Whoever is there, D-line, just don’t make him look like a Pro Bowler.
