Coaches Seem To Like Chris Conte

September 27th, 2017

Getting lots of playing time.

It seems quite a few Bucs followers develop irritable bowel syndrome for some odd reason over the play of fan favorite Chris Conte.

And it doesn’t appear that those afflicted parties will find relief soon.

Looking over again the snap counts at Pro-Football-Reference.com from Sunday’s game, Conte logged more snaps than the other two safeties the Bucs are relying on, Keith Tandy and T.J. Ward.

Sunday in the fist-to-the-grill applied by the Vikings, Conte played on 73 defensive snaps, the second-most of any Bucs defender. Only linebacker Kendell Beckwith had more snaps played on defense with 74 — he was on the field for every defensive play.

Ward saw the field for 46 snaps and Tandy for 28. Even though he was injured in the Minnesota beatdown, Ward saw the percentage of snaps played on defense jump from 44 percent of the snaps played against Chicago to 62 percent against Minnesota.

Just for background information, second round pick Justin Evans has seven snaps on defense it a blowout win over Chicago and was on the field for one defensive play at Minnesota.

What does this tell Joe? That Bucs coaches — who monitor Conte in practice daily not to mention games — see more in Conte than many fans do.

He sure doesn’t look like he’s playing well though, but the coaches know better. Just hope he starts making game changing plays soon.

  2. Pickgrin Says:

They have Ward learning/playing strictly free safety right now and Tandy is/was the starting free safety. That’s why Keith is losing snaps. Because Ward is a Pro Bowler and is already making plays barely knowing the defense. If Ward was started out learning just the Strong Safety’s role – then Conte’s snaps would be diminishing.

His ability to tackle receivers in the end zone is amazing!

  4. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

Show some respect you kneeling sob.

  5. Steve in Mad Beach Says:

Pickgrin, you’ve got that backwards. Although it seems counter intuitive given how well Tandy played at FS last year, Conte is playing FS, and Ward is learning/playing SS.

  6. Pickgrin Says:

Steve – the positions I stated are correct.

  7. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

It tells Harry that Justin Evans coulda, shoulda, wish-he-woulda, been Delvin Cook!

I don’t get it. Licht has done a great job, but how do you not address the 2 biggest offseason needs on the team: RB and DE/Pass rush?!. This is not hindsight. Even my dumbazz could see this as glaring

  8. Bird Says:

Light tried to move up in second round to get dalvin cook. He was gone by our pick. And yes bucs are still stoked they drafted oj Howard

Kareem hunt should have been the consideration at some point

  9. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

licht claims he tried to move up to get cook only after the vikings pillaged the bucs and were led by case and cook

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Few members of the team played well this past Sunday. Other than Winston because of his picks, you can’t really lay it on one single player.

  11. NewTampaChris Says:

Let’s have a JBF pool on when Conte gets his (first) defenseless receiver penalty on Sunday! Joe can donate a dozen Abe’s wings to the winner. I’ll take 2nd quarter, 10:33 left.

  12. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

I just dont want to see OBJ running 80 yard on a slant untouched and doing some silly end zone dance

  13. Conte Piscateli Says:

    @newtampachris

I don’t think we get any defenseless receiver penalties playing 10-15 yards off. Or secondary is rarely close enough so see a defenseless receiver, let alone hit one.

  14. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

It’s obvious the Coaches like Conte!!! Tandy should be in Contes spot considering how Keith has played and Chris has played. Wait and see what OBJ and Giants receivers do Sunday to our Secondary!!! Looks bleak to me for the Bucs again this season if injurys continue and the wrong personnel are on the field!!! I can see go Ducs don’t lay an egg…..

  15. Lamarcus Says:

Conte is our starting safety …… let that just soak in

  16. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

Lamarcus it has soaked in that’s why I’m pissed. Maybe you can explain to me why and make me feel better!!! Watch what I’m saying though come Sunday and then come back and explain to me again!!! Thank you.

  17. SteelStudBuc Says:

Let’s just hope there’s some contact withing 5 yards by the corners to interrupt routes and timing

  18. Easy Denman Says:

Say what you will about Conte but hes been solid so far this season.

  19. cmurda Says:

I don’t know. I see 99 problems on defense but Conte ain’t one.

  20. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

Maybe if OBJ is suspended for the game this Sunday for his dog peeing antics in the end zone we may have a chance … New York ownership is not happy with him and says it will be addressed!!!

  21. William Walls Says:

Dusthty, Licht never claimed anything. The source for that news was the Vikings front office who told one of their beat reporters that Licht was their competition in trying to trade up for the pick they used to draft Cook. Licht has never publicly said a word about it.

Pickgrin, according to this site I’m correct. Regardless, Ward has been a run stuffing strong safety his entire career

  23. Buc Fan South Tampa Says:

In looking at Conte’s play on the field I thought we had resigned Sabby Piscatelli (aka Goat). Classic Sabby, laying off eight yards from the receiver, then as they move downfield he shifts his hips to the right and WR goes left. By the time the ball is caught he is six yards out of the play. Typical Sabby move. But, give him credit he still ran down Diggs in the end zone after Hargreaves got burnt (again).

  24. LakeLandBuc Says:

If Chris Conte is your starting FS, you have my sympathy.
