“He’s A Lifetime Learner”

August 26th, 2017

The No. 1 reason the Buccaneers’ future is stable rests in the mind of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

That was the message delivered by the man who knows best.

Speaking on Buccaneers.com, winning head coach Dirk Koetter responded to a fresh question about whether Jameis will take the next step at quarterback this season.

Koetter said the answer isn’t just about 2017.

“I think Jameis is going to improve every year from age 23 to however long he wants to play because he’s a lifetime learner. I mean, no one’s harder on him than him. Jameis is as hard a working guy as I’ve been around, and a pleasure to coach and we’re so fortunate to have him. But he still is not playing as well as he can play or as well as he’s gonna play at some point in his career.

“How big the jump is? I don’t know. But if practice is any indication, he’s definitely playing better than he was a year ago. But still, you got to get in the games. Jameis thrives under pressure, but those games are pressure-packed; that’s for sure.”

Get Koetter 1-on-1 and he’ll share plenty of perspective about what’s happening in the NFC South, where Jameis will have to prove consistently that he’s better than Cam Newton, Drew Brees and Ryan. That’s a very tough and almost unfair burden on a 23-year-old QB and Koetter understands that very well.

But nobody is betting against Jameis, primarily because he is putting in the work and deeply desires to learn at a rapid rate. This might not be Jameis’ breakthrough season, but he will break through into the elites. All the elements are in place.

No doubt. As Jameis goes, so do the Buccaneers. And from what we’ve seen over the past two seasons and this summer, both in training camp/preseason games and Hard Knocks? That is a VERY good thing.

Everything’s coming together under Coach Koetter, Mike Smith and the young and talented Jameis Winston and his teammates. We as Buccaneer fans have been waiting for years for what is right in front of us.

    Enjoy people, enjoy.

The definition of education is life-long love of learning. I wish I was as wise as him at 23.

    70% completion rate, at least 30 TD’s, <15 INT's, & 5000 yds passing for Jameis this year.

And he will lead us deep into the playoffs and hopefully the SB.

    I'd say that's quite a leap.

its going to be interesting to observe IF..jameis has made improvements this season. I hope he will/has. I want him to be more deadlier in the red zone. We seem to be gamebusters marching all the way down there only to get 3 or 0 pts. If we’ve made necessary improvements, we will be deadly.

I agree with JAB83 on almost every level. Very thorough and satisfying article. Until Joe says “this might not be Jameis’s breakthrough season”. Don’t you dare speak that evil around here on gameday
