Dirk Koetter Names His Song Of Choice

August 13th, 2017

The Skipper?

Winning head coach Dirk Koetter doesn’t appear to be the Karaoke type.

Though after a few cold ones and urging from his wife, who knows?

Those who watched Hard Knocks Episode 1 last week saw Bucs rookies singing solos in the team auditorium before the entire roster. It’s sort of a hazing-like tradition at One Buc Palace.

The next day on NFL Network, Koetter was asked what he might sing in that situation.

The head coach delivered a quick and easy answer.

“I’m a Gilligan’s Island guy, I like the theme song from Gilligan’s Island. I like a little video with it, get some guys in there, you know Professor, Mary-Ann,” Koetter said.

This got Joe thinking about what character Koetter aligned himself with on the popular TV show, which aired from 1964 to 1967. (Syndication took the show to generations of kids in the 1970s and 1980s, including Joe.)

Joe can’t paint Koetter as goofy Gilligan. (And Joe can’t see Koetter wearing a white, floppy hat.) Koetter is to fiery to be The Professor. And he doesn’t have the panache of Mr. Howell. So yes, Koetter is The Skipper.

Joe will throw back a beer tonight hoping the 2017 Bucs are nothing like the S.S. Minnow, which might is what the 2011 Bucs were coming off a 10-6 season.

No way would Koetter be the Skipper. If he was, Gilligan would never make it out of the island training camp. He probably would have traded him for one of the Head Hunters, Wrongway Feldman or the Japanese sailor.

  2. Dewey Selmon Says:

The professor, designing offenses, Lovie had a basement, Dirk had an Island. And Mary Anne/Ginger.

  3. BucEmUp Says:

    100% the professor!!!

  4. The Buc Realist Says:

Obviously, lovie is the boat!!!!! Which stranded everyone, was unrepairable, utterly useless and would just sink if tried to use again!!!!!!!!!!! So glad that the Glazers scuttled that useless, incompetent, obsolete, broken down antiquated boat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!

  5. Pickgrin Says:

    Silliness

  6. SB Says:

This begs the age old question for my generation…………
    Ginger or Mary Anne?
Mary Anne All day Long for me.

  7. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

    I’m a Maryann guy.

  8. NFLNut Says:

    Ginger all the way!

As for theme songs … my favorite of all-time is the no-words Boston Legal or Andy Griffith tunes!

  9. Buc50 Says:

Marry Ann and it’s not close. She can hike the ball to me multiple times so we can work on those false starts.

  10. NFLNut Says:

I guess the Ginger or Mary-Ann question is like “Which Charlie’s Angel” … for me it was Jaclyn Smith all day every day and twice on Sundays …

  11. Steven007 Says:

Does this now mean that he’ll be known as Gilligan’s Island loving winning coach Dirk Koetter every time we see his name? The “winning” prefix is bad enough. Let’s hope not.

  12. Rod Munch Says:

The obvious song for the players to sing was The Touch as song by Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights. First, they’re the only two Dirk’s I’m aware of (was the lead in Dragon’s Lair named Dirk too, I forget). Second, Marky Mark sings The Touch quite poorly, so if you stink at singing you can just say you did it bad on purpose to match the movie. Third, whenever you sung “you got the touch” you could point seductively at Dirk, you’d be an instant nationwide TV star when your NFL career ended after the first cut.

That would have been my choice.

  13. Joe Says:

for me it was Jaclyn Smith

Yes! That was, until Cheryl Ladd joined the show.

Joe is also a Mary Ann kinda guy.

Also, on “WKRP in Cincinnati,” Bailey > Jennifer.

    Yeah, Joe wrote that!

  14. TampaTown Says:

Coach Koetter is definitely the Professor! Anyone who can make a radio out of a coconut can also figure out a way to beat the Giants and the Patriots in the same week. Plus they both have the same hair. Also, what kind of guy would pick Ginger, the very definition of high matinence? You’d have to wait all day for her to get ready, then no way would she want to sit beside you on the couch watching the Bucs away games. You couldn’t take her to RJS for the Bucs home games because she wouldn’t want to sweat in an evening gown. Yuck.

  15. TampaTown Says:

I know how to spell maintenance. That was an auto correct. Ugh.

  16. James Walker Says:

Dirk is the Professor….calm, direct, logical, and creative.
