Rising Receivers

Chris Godwin rose to the challenge. (Photo courtesy of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

On a night the Buccaneers rested 15 players, included many starters like Mike Evans and DeSean Jackson, Joe was looking for rookie receiver Chris Godwin to answer the bell.

And he did — on a very wet field.

Godwin, who has had more practice time recently with America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, was up to the challenge against Cleveland tonight. He led the Bucs with four catches for 56 yards on five targets, working the outside of the field and over the middle.

Godwin’s success is even more soothing considering Adam “Rudy!” Humphries left the game with a hip injury. Hopefully, Humphries will be fine, but Joe isn’t sweating it right now.

Bernard Reedy also impressed at receiver — and at returner — for the third consecutive game. And Joe has to give it up for Donteea Dye, the misplaced Calgary Stampeder. Dye brought his A-game, looked like one of the fastest men on the field, and played like he didn’t want any part of Canada in his future.

Joe’s real curious to know how Bucs coaches really evaluate Godwin. If they think he’s the real deal already, then that could significantly change how Dirk Koetter approaches his playcalling.

    Woot woot!! Go Bucs!

  2. SCBucsFan Says:

It’s pathetic that Jameis is 0TDs 1INT. My hype is dying as the weeks go by.

  3. Bird Says:

Godwin can block too. Physical dude. Could move desean or Evans in the slot to get more touches in certain packages. Top 4 receivers so strong and diverse which is better. All 4 bring different skill set.

  4. Dano74 Says:

Happy with Godwin! Reedy came to play tonight! That was a Beautiful TD by Dye! I don’t care what those f’in refs said!!

  5. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Reedy was awesome return man I liked his play

  6. Buccaneer scotty Says:

    Fitz needs to go !

  7. Bird Says:

    Sc bucs fan-

Careful. I commented a week ago that these long drives with no TDs was not good enough. I got ripped to shreds.

Love Jameis leadership but he has to play better and make better decisions. And I know this is preseason with vanilla ice playcalling.

And i know starters didn’t all play

Good Jameis vs bad Jameis . It is year 3

  8. Roki Says:

Five quarters with the 1st stringers, 0 tds allowed. Winston will be just fine with all his new toys. Go Bucs!!!

  9. Pa Privateer Says:

Godwin is just getting started, just getting his feet wet.

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

If hump goes out because of injury it will be a godsend

Godwin is out best totol package complete receiver

Size, speed, route running, hands ,separation and rac skills…

Better than me, djax and nipples

We need him on the slot day 1….than maybe kobe will raise the total wins projection to 9 from 7

We will need to out score teams to win this year. Our 2016 defense is better than our 2017 version. We need better defensive personnel. Too many wiffs these last 2 years

Kobe spent hours crunching numbers tonight…

    2017 superbowel is

    Tennesse titans vs seattle seahawks

  11. Canuckbucfan Says:

Can we just cut Fitzpatrick already??
    The guy is horrible
If Griffin is done for the year then sign RG3 or keapernick or the rays ball girl
    Anything but Fitzpatrick

  12. Pa Privateer Says:

    @Kobe

It would be bittersweet to see Godwin take the #3 spot, but you are correct. He has all the traits you want in a WR and he is going to have a huge impact on our offense.

  13. I'm tired and 87 is right Says:

Kobe is Bucnut I guess….Predictable Mariota lovers. Can’t wait for the season to start. See ya in Miami joes! Go Bucs!

  14. Kobe Faker Says:

Our off is going to bog down like 2016 because koetter is not going to use our 2 best separation mismatch receiver rookies at the beginning of the year as much as should

Inside the redzone put OJ on 1 side all by himself and he will get you a td every time, but he will be put in as a blocker because he is a beast

These 2 are not rookies. These pure breds came from pennstate and alabama. 50k rjs with the rooting buc sheep? These 2 produced with 100k packed stadiums

These 2 are ready to rock and produce but will not be our top option which is a big mistake

  15. Kobe Faker Says:

Everyone knows im the originator and only member of jameis winston nut carriers

Jameis winston will have better stats minus ints than mariota in 2017 but

Jon robinson is ready to start his hof gm career. The titans team is ready to win to the superbowl. Still need to crunch more stats. Dick lebeau will beat any pocket qb in this years superbowl, but russell wilson 2nd effort playmaking is throwing a wrench into my final calculation

  16. teacherman777 Says:

This guy is as smooth as Jerry Rice.

    I think we found a future Pro-Bowler!

  17. Mo_Downs Says:

Ok, now that the practice games are over for our starters we can heal up for the Fins. I don’t want to hear anymore about TD Jesus until we score a. TD.

  18. Alaskan abdominal snowman Says:

I’m not worried at all about no touchdowns in the preseason. We have driven the ball well and Jameis has looked much improved in many aspects including going through his progressions and checking down more. It helps that he has open receivers. It doesn’t seem like Mike Evans is seeing as many double teams and he’s abusing people 1 on 1.

We are not running our best plays that we will run in the regular season especially in the red zone. I mean why would we put on tape our best plays for other teams to see. I’ve seen enough promise and execution from the first team to say this offense will be better than last year’s in every aspect.

As far as defense, if we can just match the last half defense of ’16 this will be a playoff team. Through the preseason I am led to believe it is a strong possibility. We will need to stay healthy at all levels as there is a noticeable drop off at pretty much every defensive position except possibly safety.

  19. Bob in Valrico Says:

With both evans and jackson out I thought that the offense should have gone through both Howard and Godwin. Not sure why OJ didn’t get many opportunities.
Gotta give it up For Reedy, he made a couple of nice plays on offense and he
looks like a big upgrade in the return game.

  20. Ed Schwartz Says:

Reedy has some jets and goes north with those punt returns. He should be return man, he earned it.

  21. PhillyBuc Says:

One can only hope that OJ and Godwin are being reigned in, in hopes of surprising the opposition when it really counts… I can’t see Howard used primarily as a blocker all season

  22. Herb Says:

I thought Dye looked good. And that WAS a TD he caught. Ref’s screwed it up.

My question for Joe is; if Dye makes the 53 are you going to stop with the condescending “Stampeder” label and start calling him a receiver for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?

  23. Mo_Downs Says:

    What running game..??

Wouldn’t Kap make the Bucs a better team than Fitz???

    NFLPA..??

  24. firethecannons Says:

Fitz is awful. No=zero chance of wins if he is in, he is also an embarrassment, we should just run the ball 100% time. If JW goes down then we need to tank for the draft.
