Bucs Will Be Fine At Corner

August 28th, 2017

Freakout over CBs unnecessary.

For reasons unknown, it seems Bucs fans have a bug up their rear ends about corners.

Joe was getting Twitters Saturday night through Sunday with folks up in arms about the play of the Bucs corners. Perhaps they forgot the Bucs have a guy named Brent Grimes on the roster who is nursing a gnarly gash on his shin that took over 20 stitches to close?

Joe has the utmost confidence in Vernon Hargreaves, who has clearly improved and has two picks through three preseason games. Not shabby.

But why do fans think a backup cornerback should be equal to a starter? How are the Bucs supposed to acquire a starting-caliber corner, and keep him on the bench? No player who could start (and get paid) is going to agree to sign with a team to be a backup. That’s crazy talk.

And most teams are not going to pay a guy starter’s cash to sit on the bench.

Folks who think a starting-level corner will happily agree to sit on the bench just because he could play with the Bucs is in Fantasyland.

Yes, Ryan Smith needs work but already one can see the improvement. Robert McClain, who started for the Stinking Panthers in a Super Bowl two years ago, likely will be the nickel corner. Again, if other teams thought he was a starter, he wouldn’t be with the Bucs.

Joe isn’t worried about the corners, partially because he knows there is no starting corner in the NFL who would agree to take a job where he would sit on the bench unless someone was hurt.

(Also, in regards to corners, wouldn’t it be nice for a change if a rookie quarterback didn’t have so much time to throw the ball he could order pizza and not get his jersey soiled?)

So is VHIII’s back issue muscular or spinal? Huge difference between the two long term.

it’s been like that for 13 years yet you toot the horn of the leader of the losing culture like he is reggie white reincarnated… Bucs have tried everything around mccoy and nothing works yet these same dlineman go on to better success elsewhere Johnson looked better in detroit lining up next to a real DT and obviously bennett has had success maybe it’s time to address the real concern and stop making excuses for a bum because he has a nice smile. I guess we can start with the How many All-Pro linemates does it take to make a average soft DT great

I am very worried about CB… Grimes will hold his own but you guys are going to be very very disappointed in vh3… he is not great and never will be. adequate but not great. i realize some of you have already worked on his canton bust but reality is he has not been that good the last two weeks and that pick was not a play he made. yes he reacted and DID HIS JOB but he did not create that turnover. being in the right place at the right time does not erase getting toasted previously or stupid penalties to make up for bad technique and lack of speed. CB like RT and dline will be a HUGE problem this season.

The one time I agree… But aren’t you the one who complains about our 5th WR and imploring for the signing of Bolden?
Implored for Bucs to bring in Boldin for a look and a chat immediately. Signing is another matter. Two different things. Injuries to receivers are a little more common than corners. Plus, the Bucs have backup corners, and Joe includes Josh Robinson in there. Still, look for them to sign a corner after final cuts are made –Joe

tmaxcon, I’m concerned about our CBs too, but not for the same reasons apparently. VHIII is pretty solid for a 2nd-year starter IMO, but back issues concern me (having been down that road personally before). Brent Grimes is awesome IMO, but gashes like that on the lower leg are nothing to sneeze at … should that puppy open up again he’d miss several weeks more than likely. Robert McClain has been a welcome surprise at nickel CB IMO, but would be a step down from our starters on the outside if one of them went down. Pretty much the same with Javien Elliott, although I still wish he was a bit bigger. I’ve been a proponent for Ryan Smith since he came onboard, but he’s got a LOT of growing to do experience-wise to play outside. Still think he’s a future starter however (seems to be ‘playing from behind’ far too often). And Josh Robinson I love on STs, but just haven’t seen enough of him playing with the 1’s to know how he’d do. Fully expect (as of right now) that those 6 will be our CBs this year, but wouldn’t be surprised to see Licht grab a quality CB after the cut-downs IF one becomes available.

UF grad and gator homer and never liked the vh3 pick, wanted tunsil to protect jameis, i just think he is average, whcih is ok but not getting picked where he was means an average corner and that is what I feel he will be….but great points on the pass rush needing to pick it up and I am sure coach smith is keeping his blitzes, etc under wraps until week 1….so until dolphins game things will change defensively for the bucs in a positive way I am hoping

  6. CautiousOptimism Says:

Dline and lack of pass rush is the biggest issue on this team. They will be giving up the booty to Jay Cutler in a few weeks. I can’t believe how crappy this Dline is. Fatty Baker is awful in all manner of speaking on and off the field. Maybe Spence needs to go back to JuCo. Can someone please tell me whether or not Robert Ayers is even playing football anymore? I thought he was a starter on our Dline but I have not seen him make a single play. Mr Beasting, huh? Still feel good about that one?

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We desperately need to pressure the QB…..forget sacks…..how about a simple hand in the air or forcing him out of the pocket.

We should be blitzing with LVD & Kwon…..and you can fire in a safety blitz on occasion…..they never seem to be in position downfield anyway.

  8. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

Don’t worry, Once the season starts you will see someone from the back 7 rushing!!! And you will see 5 man rushes!!!!! To say that they have been running a vanilla defense is a understatement!!!!! They are not even running stunts or twists at all until a couple during the third quarter!!!!!!

And the secondary won’t look this bad as they will not be hung out to dry by the pass rush!!!! once the season starts and Coach Smitty manufactures the pass rush it will look easier for them!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

    They’ve tried everything huh?

    Adrian Clayborn and Daquan Bowers?
    Ghost and Houseplant Johnsons?
    Robert Ayers?

    This is trying everything huh?

Oh, I forgot- the one decent DE they had in Michael Bennet they let walk away. And btw his numbers are basically the same in Seattle as they were in Tampa.

But good to see you still have you head straight up your rear end, ensuring the only thing that ever comes out of your mouth is complete sh*t. Please, don’t ever change tmax.

  10. 813bucboi Says:

@tmax…that’s BS….I don’t know what game(s) your watching but VHG has improved each time he steps on the field….don’t think his latest pick was him causing a T.O., that’s you(wonder what you would’ve said if he dropped it..probably the same thing)….what about his first pick that saved a TD?….

VHG will be our #1 CB for a have long time?…..STOP HATING!!!….have you forgot this is only his second year?….we haven’t even played a “real game” and some of you are acting like he’s given up 8 TD this preseason….you fall under the same category of the idiots that question play calling in the preseason….GIVE ME A BREAK…..

as for wanting tunsil over VHG, you’ll see why we made the pick week1….GO BUCS!!!!

tmaxcon needs to get his head out of his BigHogHaynes…but he never will.

  12. Justin Says:

On the podcast you said that you think they will get another CB that Smith is not good enough to be the 3rd CB
