Receiver Battle Fizzles

August 31st, 2017

Ryan Fitzpatrick was 2-for-7 for 6 yards tonight.

Before tonight’s Bucs preseason game (if you can call it that) against the Redskins, general manager Jason Licht talked on the Buccaneers Radio Network about the hot battle at No. 5 receiver and how tonight’s performances could settle it.

Bwaahhhh! That was quite a funny one through three quarters.

After 45 minutes, the Bucs had attempted 12 passes amassing a grand total of four yards.

Resting 37 players has a way of gutting a team’s resources, but this was ridiculous. Were the Bucs’ bottom-of-the-roster dwellers that inept?

Joe felt badly for Bernard Reedy, Freddie Martino and other receivers who thought they were going to showcase their skills for the Bucs and the rest of the NFL tonight. Yeah, Joe realizes there’s more to playing receiver than catching passes, but c’mon.

In the fourth quarter, the Bucs opened things up and it was Tuesday’s Hard Knocks villain, Jesus “Bobo” Wilson, scoring the highest marks. Wilson, a former target of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, at Florida State University, caught a beautiful 40-yard bomb from fourth-string QB Sefo Liufau, and he added two more catches for a total of 20 yards, plus a 32-yard kickoff return.

Liufau finished 16-for-28 with 170 yards, one touchdown (10 yards to Reedy) and one interception through the air.

Joe expects Reedy to get the No. 5 job, in part because of his punt return ability and his connection to Dirk Koetter dating back to their time in Atlanta. Remember, Adam Humphries left Saturday’s game with hip injury.

Hard to warm up to Bobo after that HK episode. Seems like he has the potential to be a locker room cancer. Hump’s injury just insures Godwin as the 3rd WR.

With DJAX and ME13 getting the most attention…it’s going to be fun to see how DK uses Godwin and OJ…that’s FOUR guys to cover and I haven’t even mentioned Brate or Sims out of the backfield.

I think Reedy is a lock for #5.

If they keep 6, I’m thinking it’s between dye and martino, maybe huff…

I agree St Pete, Bobo’s chances of making the team diminished greatly when he opened his mouth and said I am not used to this baby stuff, at Fl State we competed. Even after his 30+ yard punt return tonight, he walked right past Koetter and the coach barely give him a good job nod. He did look better than any other player on offense tonight but its probably too little too late.

  4. CautiousOptimism Says:

Tell me more about that oline depth?

  5. Dreambig Says:

Its it just me or does it look like Fitz’s passes move in slow motion. No zip or velocity. I noticed this in training camp and then again tonight. He throws the ball and it gently makes its way to the receiver.

  6. Rod Munch Says:

Dirk really didn’t give his WRs much of a chance to do anything – I mean in the 2 min drill at the end of the first half with the ball and timeouts he just ran the ball up the gut and and ran the clock out, that made no sense.

In the final quarter he finally did more than run it up the middle but really I don’t get wasting almost an entire game like that unless all he cared about was seeing how the running backs would do when the other team knew you were going to run it up the gut. I get that you don’t show your playbook in the preseason, but wow, it was ultra conservative. Pointing that out doesn’t mean I’m mad the play calling, so I’ll explain that again, I’m just pointing it out in saying it’s hard to take much of anything away from the game when you’re so incredibly basic and predictable like that. That’s not a complaint, it’s an observation and a comment on the observation. But because of that I don’t know what you can take away from this game since no one really had a chance to show anything.

But the final quarter was actually entertaining, just as I thought I had somehow got meningitis and was succumbing to that infection, it turns out I was just really bored by the first 3 quarters of play.

Huff was resting tonight. Thinking he’s the 5th

  8. unbelievable Says:

@CautiousPessimissim – you do realize they rested their top seven olineman right?

  9. CautiousOptimism Says:

Rod Muncher- oline gave it up all night. How are you blaming play calling?

  10. CautiousOptimism Says:

unbelievable- you do realize that Wash wasn’t playing their starters either, right?

  11. R.O. Says:

    OMG… who cares!!

  12. Rod Munch Says:

CautiousOptimism – Here’s the deal right… and I can’t believe I have to explain this… if everyone knows you’re going to run up the middle on first down, everyone tees off on that run, meaning they know where to go. The Redskins were run blitzing up the gut on 1st down by the time you got to the 2nd quarter. Do you understand the basics there kiddo, like how that works.

I’ll give you a better example you can more easily follow… let’s say you hold up 2 fingers in front of you to where I can see them, then let’s say you ask me to tell you how many fingers you’re holding up. You see, I’d know it’s 2 fingers, you shouldn’t be shocked when I say 2 fingers. See what I mean?

Bobo Wilson put his foot in his mouth on HK n possibly days leading up to what America witness the other night.Arrogant, disrespectful, boastful, cocky,
n immature. He went undrafted with n opportunity to make the team but can’t n refuse to listen to criticism n learn from it. U r not at FSU where u were probably babied n pampered n got away with talking back to coaches the way u do. I don’t care bout his catches or progress…cut him n keep character over Mr “who cares”. Please get rid of that cancer now.

  14. Waterboy Says:

Bucs backup QB’s are horrible. I felt bad for the bubble WR’s also because they didn’t get much of a shot tonight.

  15. K_bassuka Says:

Garbage @ss Fitzpatrick, man I can’t wait till he’s no longer on this team.

  16. CautiousOptimism Says:

Rod Muncher- again, oline stuck out their booty from the opening bell. All that condescending sht you just threw together doesn’t change the fact that no matter what coach K calls it’s going to get smoked because the oline can’t fn block. I don’t need condescending talk, hand gestures or clay models to explain that sht.
What does need explaining is why our depth compared to some pretty pedestrian teams in the preseason always looks out-leagued. Stupid Lovie

  17. BigHogHaynes Says:

Some body please call Colin K., do it….do it now !!!! Fitz is not the one we need!!

  18. Bob in Valrico Says:

There is a reason we have already extended our injured backup QB through
2018.With so many starters out in game 3 and 4, Winning took a backseat
to letting players on the bubble get a chance to show what they can do.
No Worries about the playcalling, the concern should be:whether players
can execute their assignments and stop committing costly penalties.

  19. Pickgrin Says:

Bobo Wilson showed last night that he belongs in the NFL.

The things that Hard Knocks caught him saying was not a good look at all.

But I’m guessing that was just a moment in time and does not represent how the young man talks and acts on a day by day basis. Hoping so for his sake.

If Bobo gets cut (which seems likely) I hope he makes it to the Bucs Practice Squad.

We are probably only going to carry 5 WRs to start the year – but odds are high that one will get hurt at some point – so we need a couple good young reserve WRs on the PS. Bobo and Martinez I’m thinking.

I believe the 5th spot goes to either Huff or Reedy.

  20. Cobraboy Says:

If Huff wasn’t #5, he wouldn’t have been held out.

  21. webster Says:

You bobo bashers are the most gullable people. You saw snippets of an entire conversation and you think you have a good grasp on who bobo is. Hey its called editing. Hbo could have created a narrative that swaggy was a malcontent bully based on editing if they wanted to and you gullable nancies would have ate it up. Instead, they went with the narrative of him as the class clown. Stop falling in the trap of making sweeping judgements about a person based on 20 seconds total of content. That says more about you than it does him.
    Well said.–Joe
