Bucs Sign Sackless Defensive End

July 27th, 2017

The next Kyle Moore?

The Kyle Moore experience scarred Joe.

Moore was the two-year Bucs defensive end (2009-2010) who shockingly went sackless through two seasons.

That’s awfully hard to do. Perhaps it was all the napping.

So whenever Tampa Bay signs a free agent DE, Joe immediately looks to see if the guy has recorded an NFL sack. Joe takes nothing for granted.

Today, per NFL Network, the Bucs made a roster move signing Justin Trattou, who has played in 37 games with the Giants and Vikings since 2011.

Joe can confirm that Trattou is sackless. He has two interceptions, both in 2015, and 11 solo tackles, but no sacks.

Trattou, who turns 29 in August, played in 16 games with the Vikings last year as a bottom-of-the-roster guy.

Not a signing that will move the needle, not even one that Joe would normally write up, but sackless always gets Joe’s attention.

Special teams ace. That’s why he’s even in the league at all

  2. JAB83 Says:

When I think of SACK LESS these days I think of WDAE…

My apologies Joes for ever suggesting you might be angling for an BullSpitPN job.(bspn)

  3. BradentonBuc Says:

Every time Joe brings up Kyle Moore I just cringe at the thought of the quality of the team back then. George Johnson’s smiling with this signing

  4. Pete Mitchell Says:

DWight Freeney still available. Can’t imagine that he would he hurt Noah Spence’s development (see Vic Beasely) and he can still get after the quarterback on third down.

  5. BradentonBuc Says:

@Pete right??? With some cap space and offseason moves to make a real run at the playoffs why not just bring him in? I can’t complain about Team Glazers willingness to spend money and still rank near the top in ticket value but with all of the offseason moves I don’t see why not??

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Does anyone seriously expect Justin Trattou to make the 53-man roster? With Jack Smith going on PUP, Bucs have just filled that space temporarily IMO. And Pete, Dwight Freeney might still be available, but maybe there’s a reason? As in last year with the NFC South winner he played in 15 games, had 3 sacks & 10 total tackles (no FF that I saw). And oh ya, he happens to be 37 1/2 right now.

  7. BurgDweller Says:

Possible camp meat? No sacks with 37 games under his belt, not surprising this dude was on the free agency market.

  8. BigHogHaynes Says:

We all know what happens in Training Camp will determine his fate as to wether he makes this team!!

  9. Pickgrin Says:

“Welcome aboard oh sackless one – at least I had a few in Detroit”
    – George Johnson –

  10. Johnnie Says:

Joe I don’t get it why not kick the bucket with the 1st rounder the eagles cut yesterday! I’m sure dude just a camp body but the young man from eagles could be a potential steal!

  11. mark2001 Says:

Johnnie…is that the guy that the Bronco’s picked up for a seventh round draft pick? And he was an O lineman, wasn’t he? Or are we talking two different guys?

  12. stpetebucsfan Says:

Probably camp meat unless he’s just an awesome ST guy.

I’m not looking for an exciting signing at this point. Draft is over and FA is also largely over…when we reach the cutdown there is a CHANCE a servicable player is available…maybe a cap casualty…maybe just beat out by an outstanding rookie…maybe just not ready for prime time!

I think our fundamental roster is set. Any additions at this point are warm bodies.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Camp meat.

Joe, are the Bucs at the cap minimum this year?

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

stpetebucsfan, I agree with everything you just said.

  15. SB Says:

I agree with SPBF and Bonzai

  16. SB Says:

By the way good to see you fellas

  17. Brett Says:

When the roster is at 90, we shouldn’t be to worried about a July 27th signing of someone who probably won’t make the team. We don’t want our starters and legit depth to get beat up in preseason.

  18. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

marcus smith from philly seems like a upgade to injured jacquise smith

  19. DB55 Says:

Fun fact: while Licht is signing camp meat, Jon Robinson signed Erik Walden formerly with the Lions who recorded 11 sacks last season at age 31.

And as mention Dwight Freeny is available for the 3rd year in a row.

Fun fact: when Freeny signed with the cardinals in 2015 they finished 13-3 first in the division and lost the NFC championship game.

Last yr he signed with the Falcons and they finished 11-5, first in the division and went to the Super Bowl.

So why tf are signing sackless Justin trattou is beyond me. But again wtf do I know?! Is winning a secondary priority in Tampa Bay? Inquiring minds want to know.

Sorry ST Pete, luv ya but this is the type of thinking that gets us 4th place in the division. We seriously need to ALWAYS be looking to improve the roster at every position. For example, Not signing AP is going to bite us in the arse. Mark my words. Dumbest decision Licht has made all year.

  21. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

DB55 i think falcons signed a legit OL starter today too

  22. DB55 Says:

Same with not signing Alex Mack when he had the chance but whatever…sticks and stuff.

  23. DB55 Says:

    Dusty

The saints signed Orlando franklin formerly with the chargers. Not sure if he’s a baller or not.

  24. CT Buc's fan. Says:

Back in 2015 he got two interceptions as a BACKUP Defensive End. Does that make up somewhat for being sackless?

  25. ARGH_M8E Says:

Say it, whoooooo?????????? Cares! But thanks for the update;)))))

  26. ARGH_M8E Says:

    DB55

Franklin is HUGE but dinged up and was beaten like a red headed step child last year.

  27. Johnnie Says:

Mark I’m referring to Marcus smith 1st rounder eagles cut

  28. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

DB55 right the saints… and go get marcus smith he was in diff schemes in philly and not wanted by chip kelly

  29. Pa Privateer Says:

    meh, camp meat.

We could easily dump him tomorrow and sign someone else

  30. tnew Says:

On Marcus Smith, he was not a fit for Schwarz’s system. He is an outside linebacker that likes to rush from a stand up position. Likes to drop in coverage. He and his agent should be looking for a straight up 3-4 team. He was way, way over drafted by the Eagles in the first round. Most had him going in the 3rd. Being said, I wouldn’t mind at all Jay Hayes getting his hands on him for a year as long as the Bucs are planning to play at least a third of time at 3-4 (which I think it will be more like 20%).

Trattou, I don’t know much about. His size/weight are very similar to all of the names that we have at defensive ends.

  31. tnew Says:

DB55, I agree with the Alex Mack non-signing. The Bucs have been so weak at center for so long. My guess is the Bucs really wanted to have Marpet there all along. Everything that I see and read was that this was the case. It might have happened last year if Sweezy wasn’t hurt. Warhop’s philosophy is that great centers are developed, not drafted.

  32. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Tnew warhop better have marpett superready and sweezy healthy game 1 because Jameis may not survive the Suh attack game 1, Suh reminds me of clubber lang from rocky

  33. DB55 Says:

    Dusty,

I’m gonna write suh personally an ask him to take it McCoy on Jameis week 1. You know, sack him early in the first, do a little dance or the superman and then disappear for the rest of the game. Do you think he’ll go for it?

  34. 813bucboi Says:

@DB55…..damn you on a roll early…first quarter!!…lol…I agree with everything you said….why the hell are we signing sackless camp meat….

BS like this will not get you an extension licht….GO BUCS!!!!

  35. DB55 Says:

    813

Ty sir, I aim to please.

  36. tnew Says:

Dusty… Marpet is the very least of my worries when it comes to Suh. This is the kind of match up the Marpet likes. Marpet has a mean streak as does Sweezy. Cameron Wake is much more of a concern for me going up against Dotson. Now if Sweezy or Marpet goes down, then I’m concerned with Suh.

  37. Chris Says:

Trattou has a ring with the Giants. He is a baller.
