Jameis Is “Thrilled To Death”

May 15th, 2017

The GM is talking

Action is heating up at One Buc Palace.

Real action. Exciting action.

General manager Jason Licht took to the WDAE-AM 620 airwaves this evening to welcome back the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig, who returned from a long leave of absence after treatment for cancer in his brain.

Licht talked a bit about the new rookie toys secured for America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, and Licht said Jameis is “thrilled to death” to be able to finally throw to his new toys.

The rookies were back in the building today, Licht said. And per NFL offseason rules, players this week can begin on-field work, though no contact or offense-vs.-defense is allowed yet, just drills. However, Jameis can fire balls over and over to manbeast tight end O.J. Howard and receiver Chris Godwin.

The preseason opener in Cincinnati is less than 90 days away. Joe is drooling.

I am confident if we stay relatively healthy we will be in the playoffs this year but obviously the smart folks at the Tribune(Tom Jones) and ESPN(football Outsiders) think we will have a loosing season.

ESPN just predicted a 7-9 season for us and Tom Jones expects us to take a step back this year as well.

  2. Wausa Says:

Sorry I meant to say Tom Jones with The Times.

  3. Bucamania Says:

Who cares. Tom Jones doesn’t know a darn thing. His radio show proved that.

  4. Buddy Says:

How thrilled is Jameis that desean jax hasn’t been working out???lol

  5. BucEmUp Says:

Pretty sure djax HAS been working out. Even though he doesnt have to….lol

  7. Fsuking Says:

There isn’t a chance the Bucs win less than 9 games next year unless Jameis gets hurt. If you just step back and think about it for a second, our offense has Mike Evans, DeSean Jackson, Doug Martin, O.J Howard and Cameron Brate on it. (Yes, Doug Martin is still very talented, despite you) If our seemingly improved, already pretty good defense doesn’t take a step back, we could win 14 games. Not saying we will, but if the dirty butthole Falcons can almost win the Super Bowl with all offense, we could certainly do so as well!

  8. Destinjohnny Says:

Steve is the best… I really believe that

  10. Buc1987 Says:

I my Tom Jones prediction : He’ll still be an a-hole a year or 10 years from now.

  11. Fsuking Says:

The last time Jameis had a fully loaded arsenal, all he did was go 14-0 and score the most points in the history of college football. And he didn’t even have a guy to take the top off the defense that year! This could get exciting!!!

  12. Jim Says:

    Ups yours Tom Jones.

  13. DEFF JEFF Says:

Tom Jones is a great example of the reason why traditional journalism is dying. Thanks to sites like this and a few others we fans can get our sports news, interpret that news on our own, and express our opinions from there. We don’t need devils advocates anymore to fear us into reading their baseless articles

  14. EA Says:

This year we will have a pretty good idea of what kind of QB Jameis is/will be.

  15. GhostofSchiano Says:

What is the back up plan in the event Winston is injured / out for several games?

As much as I cannot stand the guy Colin Kapernick could be a good pick up and back up to Jameis. Again, I do not care for Kapernick as a person but he does have some value if he can keep his activism in check. Could let him sit unsigned for a few more weeks and sign him cheap with an anti-activism clause. Kapernick does have some tools (not all) but if God forbid something happened to Winston what would the Bucs do????

  16. GhostofSchiano Says:

The only other QB on the roster is Ryan Griffin.

Come on Licht, you can do better than that.

Great to hear steves back! Get that timing together and ill let you guys know how they look on the ohio river. πŸ™‚

  18. Joe in Michigan Says:

I’d rather see Ryan Fitzpatrick signed to a backup QB role. Reasons: 1) He has played in the AFC East (the division we face this year) and 2) He is not Kapernick.

  19. Fred E. Bucs Says:

    Tom Jones:

    – Laughed with Stroud, on his show, with Queen’s “Bicycle” playing the background, because Greg Schiano hit a kid on hid bike. Then Jones…the fool…says…maybe they should be laughing so much because they don’t know what condition the kid was in.

    – Refused to go to Ronde Barber’s honor dinner because he said he had “better things to do” like “make and eat a big fat steak….at home by himself.”

    – Wanted Richie Ingonito banned from the NFL for life.

    – Said Colin Kaepernick was a great American and had courage, that it’s his “freedom of speech” but the military guys should get over his flag/anthem disrespect.

    – Said the players who don’t give the media time are selfish; they should give something back to the media.

    – Seems to have a man crush on Joe Buck.

    Is a jerk….

I’m happy for him, handled not having a whole lot to work with like a consummate professional. Never once complained at a post game presser. Some make it they’re business to take slick shots about his game. Won’t be must room to be slick after he throws for 40 TDs and 4500 yards. you know guys Tom jones & ESPN are right I’m not educated to predict records loke them they we where supposed to got 6-10 last & we went wait a min we went 9-7 well they said that the panthers were going to win the super bowl last year oh wait the pats won & the panthers where dead last in the NFC south….. I’m don’t care if U talk about how my team going to do but when you say we are uneducated (Tom jones) we’ll that’s saying a lot Tom jones need to go to A place where he will be welcome like the fins or the jets not Tampa he pubic enemy number one all I gotta say is this if we stay healthy we will make the playoffs no doubt also I do believe the Bucs can make the super bowl all we gotta do is believe & not listen to a reporter (Tom jones) sitting on the coach looking for a story

  25. gotbbucs Says:

One of the really nice things they have going for them right now is that they have added so much to the offense this offseason, that even the teams in the NFC South aren’t sure what the offense will look like. The sh!ty part is that we don’t even play a divisional game until like week 8.
I really can’t see how anyone would think that the Bucs will take a step back. It’s kind of baffling actually.

One has to wonder if Winston struggles with all these toys Licht has put in front of him, if he regresses this year or overly underwhelms, one has to wonder if Dirk and Licht start planning on finding a new qb in next years draft.

  34. Pit Says:

I wonder how is it even possible that we have fans that still doubt JW3???
If JW3 gets injured we are screwed and we have to deal with it.the same thing is true for every single team in the NFL if their starting QB goes down, even NE doesn’t win the super bowl if Tom Brady isn’t playing. Instead of whining and complaining why can’t you be excited for our team which the future looks so bright right now.

  35. Bucnut@ Says:

If Winston can’t get it done with these weapons, he is really mediocre. MM would throw for 5,000 yards with this talent around him.

  36. Rod Munch Says:

I watched all of Jameis INT’s today just to get a grip on how many were truly bad plays and how much was bad luck or Hail Mary’s etc. This is my breakdown of each INT – it’s just my opinion on things like pressure and if the route was wrong/miscommunication. I’m not a coach or anything, just my opinion, which means I’m just as qualified as PFF.

1 – Week 1 @ATL, quarter 1 – Throwing to Vincent Jackson, cuts off route, miscommunication? Not under pressure
2 – Week 2 @AZ, quarter 1 – Throw to Evans, 50/50 ball, INT by Patrick Peterson, slight overthrow. Not under pressure
3 – Week 2 @AZ, quarter 2 – Throwing to Vincent Jackson who didn’t turn around to look for ball, looks like a good throw. Not under pressure
4 – Week 2 @AZ, quarter 3 – Throwing ball outside to Chris Simms on a screen, pass is tipped/deflected by defensive lineman. Under pressure
5 – Week 2 @AZ, quarter 4 – Hail Mary pass to end game, pass to Evans. Under pressure, rolling out of pocket.
6 – Week 3 LA Rams, quarter 2 – Throwing to Chris Simms who bobbles ball, is hit, ball is deflected into air for INT. Good throw. No pressure.
7 – Week 4 Broncos, quarter 1 – Throw to Humphries, too far in front. Bad INT. No pressure.
8 – Week 4 Broncos, quarter 2 – Throw to Evans, Talib makes a great play for to bait Winston. Bad INT. No pressure.
9 – Week 7 @49ers, quarter 1 – Throw to Evans, pass deflected. Forced pass. No pressure.
10 – Week 10 Bears, quarter 1 – Throw to Cecil Shorts, off his hands, bobbled ball, deflected for INT. No pressure.
11 – Week 12 Seattle, quarter 4 – Throw to Evans in end zone, double coverage, bad throw. No pressure.
12 – Week 13 @SD, quarter 1 – Throw to Evans, slightly outside, good coverage, bad throw. Some pressure.
13 – Week 15 @Dallas, quarter 2 – Throw to Evans, Hail Mary at halftime
14 – Week 15 @Dallas, quarter 4 – Throw to Humphries, overthrow, bad throw, heavy pressure.
15 – Week 15 @Dallas, quarter 4 – Throw to Russell Shepard, 4th down play, forced pass, no one open, some pressure
16 – Week 16 @NO, quarter 3 – Throw to Evans, INT, overthrow, little pressure
17 – Week 16 @NO, quarter 4 – Throw to Russell Shepard, heavy pressure, bad throw, double coverage
18 – Week 17 Car, quarter 1 – Throw to Humphries, bobbles ball, deflected pass, good pass, no pressure

    Targets
    Evans – 8
    Jackson – 2
    Simms – 2
    Shorts – 1
    Shepard – 2
    Humphries – 3

    INT causes
Hail Mary – 3 (including 4th down no one open play to end Dallas game)
    Bobbled/Should have been caught – 3
Bad Throw / Forced Throw –8
    Communication error? – 2
Deflected pass, no bobble – 2

    Quarter 1 – 7
    Quarter 2 – 4 (1 hail mary)
    Quarter 3 – 2
    Quarter 4 – 5 (2 hail mary)

    Under pressure – 8
    No pressure – 10

    Targets
    WR – 16
    RB – 2
    TE – 0

So that’s my take, I see 8 bad throws that lead to INTs. Obviously Evans was the top target for the most INTs and how much he is double covered as the season goes along, you can see it just watching the INTs – he was rarely one on one. Winston having zero INT’s when throwing to the TE is quite impressive considering he uses the TE fairly extensively.

  37. Rod Munch Says:

Bucnut – Dummy, there’s only been 5 passers in NFL history that have thrown for over 5,000 yards. Now back to the glory hole for you, your mouth is missed.

    God bless.

I like this idea, he’s probably asking too much money.
Although we have the cap space I doubt this happens.

  42. Rod Munch Says:

I’d rather pickup RG3 over Fitz. RG3 can’t stay healthy is his big problem – when he played in Cleveland he wasn’t bad, he just got hurt all the time. If he could stay healthy he could be a very valuable commodity if they got him on a two year deal. If he lit it up in the preseason he could be a trade chip, or if stayed, looked healthy, got in a few snaps here and there and rebuilt his rep he’d get a huge contract when he left and perhaps the Bucs might finally that comp pick they seem to desire so much. The issue with Fitz is that he thinks he’s an NFL starting QB still and I’m not sure if he’d be OK taking a backup job without becoming an issue. As for RG3 if he didn’t look good then simple enough – cut him.

  43. Eric Says:

  52. NFLNut Says:

    *****************************
ROD MUNCH … ah, it’s nice to see someone else actually do their homework rather than just throw out the stupid “Jameis threw too many picks” statement.

Jameis’ stats say he threw 18 picks … and that’s a lot. However, the actual truth is basically that 8 of those picks were not on him and not bad throws at all and 2 others were good throws that he gave his recievers chances to make plays on and they just didn’t work out.

So, Jameis threw 8-10 picks that are “on him” … I can live with 8-10 picks every year for the rest of his career!

  53. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

NFL killed all the turnover noise with the piece he dig last week. Really not much of a debate after that. By the numbers Fameis better than the best QBs in the game right now at this stage of his career when it comes to the turnover department.

  54. NFLNut Says:

Corey Davis says the Titans offense is easy to learn … because it is … I’ve been saying for two years that Mariota is a gimmick QB but no one seems to get it as no one seems to actually watch Titans games in full … Mariota seems to ONLY throw the ball more then 10+ yards down the field if a receiver is WIDE OPEN … the guy is not a natural passer and reminds me of Alex Smith, a gimmicky QB that can play “efficient” football but will always leave his coaches and fans wanting more but he simply can’t give it to them.

I love MM as a person and hope he can have a long and successful career but he isn’t even in the same ballpark as Jameis as a professional QB and a guy that can be “the man” on a title team.

I think MM can have a better career than Alex Smith but that that’s who he is, Alex Smith 2.0

Jameis on the other hand is a mixture of Roethlisberger, McNair and Manning … he’s a bad, bad man!

  55. Pit Says:

NosBos even though I agree with you on Bucs matters you can kiss my third world country a**.

  56. Kobe Faker Says:

Alex is available to his team

If mariota doesnt complete the whole season, that would be 3 out of 3 reg seasons, jon robinson has to look elsewhere next year

His body, thin ankles doesnt last in the nfl. Good for breeding but bad for football pounding

Mariota without legs is chad Pennington

Mariotas fundamentals/throwing motion mechanics is still way off. Never steps into throws and more like jump throws. Gets some of his throws in there, but that running throwing motion can never consistently bear small windows downfield against good defenses

  57. Kobe Faker Says:

Got to give it up for jaboos dedication

Remember how overweight he was in his ladt year in college. Im sure alot had to do with his high ankle sprain and his baseball…but damn. He has changed his body completely. Have to lost 30 lbs of fat into all muscle. Not sure if i remember any qb morph his body type like that. Threats it like a 9 to5 job….only if

    “I demand a Offensive Coordinator ”

    Kobe Faker

  58. NFLNut Says:

“Mariota without legs is chad Pennington”

Good call … I view MM as Alex Smith 2.0 right now, but yeah, if he loses his wheels, Pennington is a good comparison.

It just cracks me up that anyone on this board actually thinks MM is even close to Jameis’ level as he’s not … he’s a gimmick QB …

  59. Capt.Tim Says:

Spred offense QBs always end up being gimmick QBs in the NFL.

Dies Anyonevhere belive that Kapernick, RG3, or Fitzpatrick can step into Jameis’s shoes- and lead this team to the playoffs?

    Then why draft Jameis?

These guys are not Franchise QBs. There will be expensive, and win just enough games to miss the playoffs, yet screw up your draft.

We know who they are. Failures. I don’t mean that in a bad way- they just aren’t Franchise QBs
    So why bother?
Griffen may pan out. At worst- he’ll suck as bad as those other QBs.

If you lose Winston- don’t kid yourself.
It’s game over for this season.
Better just tank for the draft- and see ya next year.

You can’t replace your Franchise QB.

  60. Rod Munch Says:

Thanks NFLNut. I was just interested in watching every INT, what the situation was and how many were truly on Winston. The interesting thing I noted was no INTs when throwing to the TE and I probably should have noted the distance of the throws – but I can say most of his bad throws were at least 15 yards down field – he rarely was turning it over on anything short. The other note was that most of his INTs were not protection issues – he’s tried to force the ball in when he had time – to me that’s a coachable thing and shows he doesn’t panic. Down the stretch as he ran out of WRs he was really forcing the ball to Evans and teams were double covering him. This year with OJ, D Jax and hopefully Goodwin he will have more options.

  61. Rod Munch Says:

Tim – Winston is a top 10 QB already – at least in my mind he is – there isn’t anyone off the street that will fill his shoes. If you got RG3 it’s a better fit than you’re giving credit for – Dirk runs a deep ball offense and that is one thing RG3 does really well – throw a deep ball. I’d bring him in and let him compete for the #2 job and see how it goes, I’m not sure why so many teams always seem to be afraid to do that. Fitz is not as good of a fit since he just doesn’t have the arm -but as a backup, if he’d be happy with that- he’d be fine. Griffin hasn’t impressed me in his limited snaps in the preseason but it’s hard to judge since he’d be playing with 3 and 4th stringers.
