Get Ready, Bucs Fans

May 25th, 2017

Nightmare for corners.

Joe doesn’t know of one Bucs fan who wasn’t raising a glass in celebration, and downing several more, when Tampa Bay signed the quickest receiver this side of Flash, DeSean Jackson.

Virtually every NFL talking head is stoked at the possibility of Jackson taking the top off of a defense and allowing America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, to shine.

Well, in the video below, you can see for yourself what Jackson can do. In Tuesday’s OTA practice, Jackson went 1-on-1 with cornerback Vernon Hargreaves. The second-year Bucs corner is no slouch himself, having run a 4.41 40-yard dash at the NFL combine a year ago. Jackson simply blew past Hargreaves. So much so that Hargreaves is out of the frame of the video.

You have every reason to get excited after watching this video. Almost as excited as when Joe stares at his life-size Rachel Watson poster.

    You cant coach speed…

Just his presence alone makes the whole offense better…

    We traded V-jax for D-Jax.

    Same salary.

    Brilliant move.

Now, if Josh Huff can lay off the puff, we might just have our first DEEP WR squad in Bucs history.

    Mike Evans
    Desean Jackson
    Chris Godwin (Mohammed Sanu clone)
    Humphries
    Josh Huff (undeniable physical talent)

    maybe one more

not to be a contrarian but VHIII was a 4.51 at the combine.. one of the reasons why I questioned the pick. At 4.41, he wouldn’t have been available at 9

Video from the NFL Network broadcast of the combine tells a different tale. — Joe

djax is hopefully the second coming of Joey Galloway for the bucs. A “late bloomer” who’s early production while admirable, didn’t reveal the production after the age of 30.

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Everyone gets excited (me too) when they see DJax blow by VHIII like he wasn’t there, but I don’t think that’s really where DJax makes his money (no pun intended Todd Monken). CB and Safeties have to give WRs like him so much space that they become a threat everywhere on the field. Once the ball is in DJax’s hands with some space to maneuver, Katy bar the door, he’s off to the races. If Jameis hits him with precision bullets like he has the capability to do, DJax has the potential to have a career year. And teacherman, don’t sleep on Derel Walker (maybe one more?) … got a hunch he could surprise a lot of folks.

For the haters; Jameis hits Jackson in stride right in the bread basket!!!

  8. Bird Says:

MAke sure and stetch those “hammies” 10 times a day. We need him big time for the whole season.

This will be fun to watch. I agree with OneBuc55, his presence alone makes the O better!

Was waiting for someone to bring that up. 🙂

I see chris godwin a exact mix of michael crabtree and amari cooper

I have a life sized poster of Joe…. outside, keeps the riff raft away.

  13. Doctor_Berto Says:

Hargreaves ran an official 4.50 at the combine, not a 4.41. He is going to get burned a lot this season again. But I guess this is good for the offense.

  14. Joe Says:

Guys, check the NFL Network video linked above for Hargreaves’ 40 time.

Guys, check the NFL Network video linked above for Hargreaves’ 40 time.

I’m reading those were “unofficial” times. His official time was 4.50

    https://campusinsiders.com/news/vernon-hargreaves-40-yard-dash-time-combine-02-29-2016/

And his draft profile on NFL.com also shows 4.50

VHG runs a 4.4…..no need to be concerned about his speed…..djax would blow by any cb in the league….yall acting like vjax blew past VHG….practicing against djax will only make VHG better in a hurry….

@joe..any footage of VHG pick?….heard he displayed his crazy leaping ability and ball skills on that play….GO BUCS!!!

Joe, allow me to play the advocate to the devil’s advocate. Joe (at least one of the Joe’s) doesn’t get excited about underwear football, typically. I know the reference is mainly to the future truck drivers and the K. Bell’s of the world and not an established guy with a track record. However, it is still underwear football. I don’t think VHIII was allowed to contact DJax at the line and up to five yards down field….nor was there any pass rush in winston’s grill (though Winston excelled last year while being rushed). Also, the Joe Kania article said that is just one of several deep ball drills between DJax and VH3….we didnt see the results of those. Having said all that, I am still excited to have DJax on our team 😉

  18. Pickgrin Says:

This helps explain the 40 time discrepancy:

“Widely considered the best pure cornerback prospect in the draft, Hargreaves clocked unofficial times of 4.41 and 4.43 in his first two runs. His official 40-yard dash time came in at 4.50 seconds.”

a 1/10th of a second is a pretty big difference between “official” and 2 different “unofficial” times. You can hear the guy in the video say something about he got VH3 by hand at 4.45.

I think reality is the 4.43, 4.45 range as an average. Hargreaves has adequate speed not great but adequate. Where he makes up for any alleged lack of speed is with “fluid hips” and good technique to go along with athleticism and solid ball skills.

He was a safe, solid pick at #11 considering our desperate need at CB last year and will be a good CB for this team for many years to come.

  19. tnew Says:

joe.. official times say what the truth is tho, the broadcasts times where unofficial.

don’t believe that, watch as he was simulcasts vs Ramsey. you can skip to 1:41 if you don’t want to wait.

  20. tnew Says:

813.. you are right on the pick VHIII made tho.. his ball skills on that were sick. Not only did he show off his vert on the pick, his celebration leap may have been higher.

  21. ManzielMadness Says:

Can’t wait to see Djax on the field this year. Having said that, pretty sure there’s no contact allowed in practices yet… so it’s basically a glorified foot race between VHG and Djax… can’t blame VHG for getting burned every once in awhile. Wait til the pads come on.

  22. tnew Says:

My argument on VHIII speed has nothing to do with his ability BTW. I believe it was Ira or one of the Joes, regarding having VHIII at that alignment versus a player like DJax is never gonna be advised. That isn’t VHIII’s strength, especially when a jam is not allowed. I don’t think he would be asked to defend a guy that he was in a speed deficiency like that with.

The huge plus is that we now have multiple receivers that dictates coverage schemes at the line of scrimmage. With Evans, it was go ahead and press him but bracket him with a safety. Now, go ahead, do that with Evans, the TE’s can go vert and clear the middle, DJax will be running free in the middle of the field. Ok, take that away, swing coverage to dJax, now Evans is 20 yards down the field in a jump ball with a CB, ok, take them both away, you have Howard and Brate, one is going vertical, one is running a drag route. Ok, lets just drop every one. Now Sims or McNichols is available with space and blockers.

I haven’t even mentioned Godwin, Martin or Humphries. Koetter has to be salivating.

  23. grafikdetail Says:

@teacherman777 i’ve been rooting for Huff too! one thing for sure regardless of who makes the 53, the bucs will have a much improved WR corp along with 1 or 2 solid developmental WRs on the practice squad

  24. Bucsfanman Says:

@Grafik & teaherman- If Huff can crack the line-up, man that is just gravy. Again, these discussions/issues are good ones to have as a football team.

  25. StPeteBucsfan Says:

MarineBuc and Joe…that was the first thing I noticed….DJAX is going to blow by plenty of NFL DB’s this year….but how about that pass!!!!!

That was DJAX smokin and he didn’t have to use his famous talent for adjusting to the ball because it hit him in the freaking hands in stride. Looks like #3 is not going to struggle timing it up with DJAX.

  26. Brandon Says:

Not sure where Joe got his numbers of Hargreaves running a 4.41 at the Combine… I certainly didn’t recall it and according to the official Combine numbers as reported by NFLdraftscout he ran 4.50.
