14 New Buccaneers & Two New Ex-Bucs

May 1st, 2017

Is the next Demar Dotson in town?

Once upon a time, Adam Humphries and Demar Dotson sat among a group of undrafted rookie free agents hoping upon hope to land with an NFL team.

Now, they are key contributors to the Bucs. Could there be another hidden gem this year? Joe hopes so.

Behold, the list of undrafted rookie free agents who will hit the practice fields of One Buc Palace Friday to begin rookie minicamp along with the drafted rookies.

Antony Auclair, TE, 6-6, 256, Laval
Deondre Barnett, DE, 6-2, 240, Southern Illinois
Richie Brown, LB, 6-2, 234, Mississippi State
Riley Bullough, LB, 6-2, 228, Michigan State
Maurice Fleming, CB, 5-11, 202, West Virginia
Cole Gardner, T, 6-6, 301, Eastern Michigan
Alex Gray, S, 6-3, 219, Appalachian State
Korren Kirven, T, 6-5, 315, Alabama
Sefo Liufau, QB, 6-3, 232, Colorado
Greg Mabin, CB, 6-0, 198, Iowa
Paul Magloire, LB, 6-0, 225, Arizona
Jonathan Moxey, CB, 5-10, 188, Boise State
Thomas Sperbeck, WR, 6-0, 187, Boise State
Bobo Wilson, WR, 5-9, 186, Florida State

O-line depth thins

It also was a busy day shaving the roster at One Buc Palace.

Bersatile offensive lineman Ben Gottschalk was cut. Gottshchalk started at left guard against the Chiefs last season, and he played plenty of snaps at center against the Bears. He blew out his knee in Kansas City. It’s a shame; Gottschalk played well.

Also ousted was tight end Kivon Cartwright, whose heart probably sank when O. J. Howard was drafted.

As for the undrafted free agents, at least one cornerback has a solid shot to land on the spring roster. The Bucs are certainly thin at the position.

  1. Steven007 Says:

Sperbeck looks to be a player potentially. I like Mabin and Wilson to potentially. Too bad about Ben though but maybe he’ll be back.

  2. Steven007 Says:

Obviously it’s a crap shoot with any of these guys but Licht seems to have had pretty good luck with undrafted free agents.

  3. Gilhealy Says:

That’s a shame about Gottshalk. Kid looked good. I just watched some highlights of the QB from Colorado, Sefuliufau. I can see why Licht and Koetter like him. Tough son of a gun. Slings it downfield.

  4. Casual Observer Says:

The Canadian TE is getting pretty good reviews. Big and strong and not too slow (4.8). I think he has a shot to make the team.

  5. 813bucboi Says:

@NOLE…..we got an fsu guy…..LOLOLOL….HOMER!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  6. tmaxcon Says:

813bucboi be nice to my boy nole man… he’s passionate… plus you calling someone a homer is pretty funny actually for that I thank you.

Sperbeck is going to open some highs…

Bonzi – your Canadian hero went from super star potential to camp meat awful quick sir.

  7. unbelievable Says:

Joe, any idea if Gottschalk was still recovering and that’s why he was cut?

He played decent the few times we saw him, and played multiple positions. Seemed like solid, developmental depth.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

Add Buc1987 to the list Joe. I’m trying out for rb. I’m in my mid 40’s, but with all those weapons around me, pretty sure I could get at least 3.5 yards a carry. Might break off a few 8 yard runs too.

Not worried about rb as much as I was 2 days ago. My grandma could run the ball this season.

  9. Buc1987 Says:

tmaxcon…lol was always camp meat anyways…

  10. 941BUC Says:

I see alot of secondary players Joe.did you leave out the KICKERS on purpose?

  11. Gilhealy Says:

tmax, and 87, I think CFL dude, Walker, and Martino will make the team. Sperbeck shows up on tape, tho. He has a shot. Huff, Dye, Sims, Barber, and Aquayo better have the pre season of their lives.

  12. tmaxcon Says:

    Buc1987

come on man bonzi said walker or welker or whatever his name was going to be a star. bonzi is always right just ask him.

  13. Buc1987 Says:

    Evans
    DJax
    Godwin
    Hump

Who else stays? How many do they carry? 6. If so who’s the remaining 2?

  14. Buc1987 Says:

tmax…lol I know Bonzai love for Walker.

  15. tmaxcon Says:

    gihealy

    i am thinking

evans, desean j, godwin, humphries, sperbeck and huff

  16. tmaxcon Says:

and yes i firmly believe that godwin will supplant humphries

  17. Gilhealy Says:

I think 6….Martino, Walker. I’ll stick to it. ME say’s his boy is looking a lot better than he was coming out of A&M. Jameis seems to have a nice chemistry with Martino. He catches everything thrown to him.

  18. LakeLandBuc Says:

I see WR Thomas Sperbeck and CB Greg Mabin as my sleepers.

  19. EA Says:

    Throw V-JAX in the mix.

  20. Gilhealy Says:

Sperbeck does look good. Not certain about Huff. He seems dedicated, but almost too quick for his own good. Careless. Poor man’s Hester. Martino has great hands. Yea, Hump has serious competition now. The cupboard’s not so bare anymore. Only the best will see the field. Not personal. Business.

  21. tmaxcon Says:

    ea

bucs are trying to win. vjax was washed up two years ago. he is done. hope his restaurant does well. he will always be a class act but he can no longer play.

  22. tmaxcon Says:

    Gilhealy

no sir the wr room is in much better shape, thankfully. it should be exciting. i love the mindset of the new players licht has brought in over the last few years. it’s going to be a fun ride for the next ten years especially if the players buy into lichts win at all cost philosophy he mentioned in press conference.

  23. Mike Johnson Says:

Good luck to these guys. There are always one or two who..Break on through to the other side.

  24. LakeLandBuc Says:

I hope Jason Licht sign Jason McCourty.

  25. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Hey Joes you forgot Brate. Another undrafted player who has turned out big for the Bucs

  26. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Watch out for Richie Brown and Riley Bullough. Bucs put down some guaranteed money on them. Might not pan out but the Bucs Brass either really likes them or thought someone else might snatch them

  27. Joeypoppems Says:

I read Austin Auclair was a priority signing too. Really putting an emphasis on the TE position.

  28. Gilhealy Says:

tmaxcon, agreed sir. On a side note, I’ll always have great admiration and respect for what #12 did for this organization. And when he singled out my girlfriend and signed her hat after a home game at the Sombrero, then winked at me, that was it. So glad he got his with the ‘Skins. I remember the play they ran in the 2nd quarter well. “Run to the white guy, then, speed up”. Tony Lilly had a bad day. Anyway, that being said, I believe #3 is in a class all his own. He’s not the next anybody. He’s the first Jameis Winston. And there won’t be another any time soon. Generational. Keep Carr, Mariota, Luck, Rodgers, any of ’em. I’ll pick Jameis each and every time. I’ll never doubt his “want to”.

  29. Rod Munch Says:

if they had a running back coming in for a tryout Joe would be saying there’s a 96.9% chance that he’d take Martin’s job – I can’t believe the Bucs cheated Joe out of that headline. SMH.

  30. Kalind Says:

Look, there is no way Bobo Wilson isn’t better than Martino, Huff or Reedy. No way. He started for FSU. Freddie martino played like high School flag football or something. If they keep ANY of those slob receivers from last year-this year….

  31. LakeLandBuc Says:

I like Richie Brown and Riley Bullough..they would have to beat out Adarius Glanton, Jeff Knox, Cameron Lynch, Devante Bond for one of the 2 remaining LB opens. LVD, Kwon and Kendell Beckwith are set.

  32. tmaxcon Says:

    gilhealy

i agree on winston 100% The “Want To” has been missing from this organization for awhile at all levels ownership, front office, coaches and players. glad they finally have some leadership in the building with the right mindset led by #3.

  33. LakeLandBuc Says:

Last season we had more UDFA on our roster than ‘actual draft picks” I doubt that’s the case this season.

  34. LakeLandBuc Says:

UDFA….Leonard Wester, Davonte Lambert, Russell Hansbrough, Alan Cross, Channing Ward, Javien Elliott …Draft picks…Noah Spence, Ryan Smith, Roberto Aguayo, Caleb Benenoch. Vernon hargreaves.

  35. LakeLandBuc Says:

    I left out Peyton Barber

  36. Gilhealy Says:

you can be Jameis knows the name of every person working at the Palace. And you can also bet each and every one of them does their job better than they did prior to his arrival. He makes you want to be great. The ball boy puts a little more zip on the ball return toss. The secretaries and janitors love coming to work. And the Glazers know what power is at their doorstep. And with great power comes great responsibility. I think they get it now. Hard Knocks is just the beginning of Buc exposure nationwide. Our players mindset will impress far and wide. Perennial contenders for yrs to come. Jameis won’t have it any other way.

  37. darin Says:

Any tackle from bama has a shot. N thats a big safety from app state. Go bucs

  38. Mtbucsfan Says:

Still shocked there is no article on how Glennon is already more than likely a back up QB lol

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Not a complete list. Also added were:

    Christian Kuntz, LB, Duquesne
    Drew Williams, LS, South Carolina

  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Four LBs. What’s that say for L. David? Certainly, Kwon isn’t on the hot seat.

I think Licht is hoping to find an upgrade through a lucky find.

  41. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m very, very happy with the WR spot. We have some promising young talent, some high level talent, and some young guys that can be developed. A good mixture.

Best of all, injuries should not be an issue this year.

  42. rayjay1122 Says:

Can someone please explain why so many like Huff? From what I remember last year, he was garbage.

  43. PRBucFan Says:

Our WRs will be Mike, Desean, Hump, Godwin, Martino, Bobo

TE’s Brate, OJ, Auclair (this guy was supposed to go high in the CFL Draft before he decided to enter the NFL Draft)

And don’t sleep on Michigan State Riley Bullough he should make some noise.

    Barnett
    Magloire
    Sefo

Others to keep an eye on.

  44. ElioT Says:

For all the sh*t being talked about P*wter Report around here. They reported this yesterday.

I love both sites but JBF, the Commish, etc.. have no business bashing their work or intentions.

    Go Bucs!

  45. James Walker Says:

If just one of these guys makes the team its a huge feather in Licht’s cap.

  46. Gilhealy Says:

rayjay- speed. plenty of it. could be he was trying too hard to impress last season. Who knows. He’s got talent. But those bad plays last season kinda over shadowed anything. He’s been steady working with #3 in the off season, and seems dedicated. We’ll see if he’s up to the challenge. He’s got some serious competition. Sounds nice, uh.

  47. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Hoping Greg Mabin does well and Alex Gray.

  48. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    PRBuc

Your forgetting Walker. He will be our 4 or 5 depending on if he can beat out Hump. Top WR in the CFL, could be a good player. I’m excited to see how that story plays out

  49. uckinator Says:

Obviously the Bucs are going to a 3-4 defensive alignment with all the LB’s chosen. I’m from Chicago and am really pissed how they treated Mike Glennon. He did get a copy of the home game in the form of guaranteed 18 million money. The Bears asked Mike, as the new face of the franchise, to go to their official draft party and glad hand the fans. They then give a king’s ransom to move up one spot, ONE SPOT to take QB Trabinsky. He of 14 starts in college. They obviously didn’t tell Mike how they were going to stab him in the back. Not real smart to upset you starting QB before the season starts. Hope the lose every game and fire em all. Somehow, that doesn’t even feel like it’s enough. The fans in Chicago are really upset !

  50. PRBucFan Says:

They are not going to a 3-4 lmao.

  51. Issic Haggins Says:

Jabar Johnson from Clemson would make sense

  52. RustyRhinos Says:

Thomas Sperbeck, Alex Grey, Antony Auclair. Look like they have ability. Let’s hope they have Availability during the season.

  53. PRBucFan Says:

The SAM is a question mark that they are intending to find a starter for and our depth last year was VERY poor for our LBs. Has LVD, Kwon, Or Daryl Smith gone down we would have been in deep crap cause they literally had no one worth a damn after besides Bond.

All these LBs are to fix that depth issue

  54. LakeLandBuc Says:

They said Mike Glennon was in a Top Level Suite at Soldier Field for the Bears Draft Party. And when Roger Goodell announced the Bears pick, Glennon went into total shock mode. They say he looked like he had caught his wife in bed with another man..

  55. BucsFanFromSaintsLand Says:

My money is on Antony Auclair and Korren Kirven.

  56. LakeLandBuc Says:

Kendell Beckwith is the SAM for the next 10 seasons.

  57. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Okay my pick for being a breakthrough star is Paul Magloire!!!

Also, I saw Houseplant Johnson is still on the roster??? How and why???

  58. LakeLandBuc Says:

Jadar Johnson has signed with the Giants..Travis Rudolph, Chad Wheeler, Jarron Jones also signed with the Giants.

  59. Dude Says:

Alex Gray looks decent in coverage against Mia & Tenn. Looks like a poor man’s Obi Melinifonwu. Definitely has a chance considering the lack of depth at that position. I’m routing for all these guy’s to KICK ASS.

  60. PRBucFan Says:

Kendall Beckwith needs to come back from his injury first before he starts to “compete” for the Sam position first and foremost. And Bond will be the one to be supplanted when the depth chart first comes out.

Again the LBs are to find LBs for the Sam competition and for depth across the LB corps.

Bullough and Magloire will be names to watch

  61. LakeLandBuc Says:

Kendall Beckwith is in the same position as Todd Gurley was with the Rams. The job is his, Beckwith,LVD, Kwon will be the starters. These other guys are fighting for the backup roles.

  62. LakeLandBuc Says:

These guys has a chance to make the team. But they can’t carry Kendell Beckwith jockstrap. The Bucs are not looking for a Starting SAM LB, they just drafted one. Even if Beckwith start the season on PUP, he will be the starting SAM OLB. His situation is no different from Myles Jack or Jaylon Smith..The Cowboys and the Jags was willing to wait on them.

  63. PRBucFan Says:

I Mean you can say it all you want lol. It does not make it the truth.

The kid will be competing for one of the few truly “open” spots on our roster. Which Koetter and Mike Smite have already said Bond is a strong candidate for.

If he makes it great but I’m not naive to think everyone heals the same way or that someone just drafted has locked anything up.

  64. SB Says:

I am already tentatively planning my trip down there for a Playoff game in January. I am keeping my schedule light for Jan.

  65. BigMacAttack Says:

If the O line has a weakness, it’s Dotson.

  66. B. West Jr Says:

I can see Bobo Wilson making the team

  67. LakeLandBuc Says:

PRBucFan..I know that Kendell Beckwith is a helluva football player. He’s has the potential to be the best Buc LB. I was watching the game against the Gators when he got hurt. I predict him to be a Day 1 starter.

  68. Not there yet Says:

I have no idea why this site keeps saying we are thin at corner. Everyone corner had logged significant minutes at some point except the corner they moved from safety. Here we go another off-season where before the draft we have nothing after the draft we are thin. No NFL team has starting caliber depth at corner. It’s hard enough having two good starters like we do much less 5 or 6 capable starting back ups.

I guess we should go making trades now?

  69. LakeLandBuc Says:

Is BoBo Wilson healthy now? He was hurt the week before Kendell Beckwith was hurt. I believe he had foot surgery. He missed the remaining of the season also.

  70. Gencoimports Says:

Liufau is the cousin of Jack Thompson, the throwan Samoan. Hope he does better.

  71. LakeLandBuc Says:

Jack Thompson..the worst trade in Tampa Bay Bucs history.

  72. LakeLandBuc Says:

Not there yet…i would like for the Bucs to sign Jason McCourty.

  73. JabooBuc Says:

Beckwith is a player. If he had not been injured he was likely an early 2nd rounder and you would probably not question him starting from Day 1. They obviously know the guy well and have inside info from Kwon. Plus, if you watch SEC football then you knew who he was.

This was not a reach and if he comes back healthy (obviously that’s an if) then we could be looking at a really strong LB unit.

  74. Buccaneer scotty Says:

    10-4skin Elio T I agree

  75. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

I was thinking about the packers ( I currently live in Wisconsin) and for the the praise that ted Thompson (packers GM) gets he legit kinda sucked the past 5 years. They have taken all kinds of defensive front 7 guys for years and whiffed on ALL of them. Most of them were 1st rounders. Just sayin

  76. Cobraboy Says:

Liufau is the NEPHEW of Jack Thompson. Not cousin.

  77. R.O. Says:

Cousin? Better re-think that one, Bruh!!

  78. Dave Says:

    Flemming
    Mabin

I think one of them make it at CB.
    They are both decent

  79. Rojas Says:

I have a feeling Stocker, and Myers might not make the team. Well I know Myers isn’t but stocker might not either. Auclair can run block, and catch also going to be good camp battles for that 3rd TE spot. Plus stocker is always injured

  80. Rod Munch Says:

Watched the highlights for the QB, Sefo Liufau, really unimpressive – shocked he got an NFL invite based on what I saw – he reminds me of a slower, less accurate, weak armed BJ Daniels. I guess they saw something more than a few minutes highlights of the guy however, so good for him, hopefully he’s awesome and provides depth – but shocked they didn’t get someone that looks more like an NFL passer.

  81. Pelbuc Says:

We need depth in the trenches and put a couple in the practice squad. Bucs are gonna need many big bodies to pass protect and rush the passer.

  82. bucs_365 Says:

    Rojas Says:
    May 1st, 2017 at 9:31 pm

I have a feeling Stocker, and Myers might not make the team.

Myers isn’t even on the team now. Free agent who hasn’t been offered a contract.

Stocker will make it… Howard, Brate, Stocker, Canadian Dude make up the 4, with Alan Cross a FB/TE as well.

  83. Gencoimports Says:

No LakelandBuc … The worst trade in Buc history was the Booker Reese trade. They don’t make that trade and the next year they could have drafted Elway, Kelly or Marino.

  84. Gencoimports Says:

ok, nephew of Thompson, I stand corrected. Got wrong info from the article From another site.

  85. Gencoimports Says:

Actually the 83 Bucs could not have drafted Elway or Kelly in 83, but they certainly could have got Marino with the 18th pick (that they traded to Chicago for Booker Reese) and this was the year Doug Williams left the team after he was mistreated by Culverhouse.

Of course, Culverhouse was so dispised that Marino probably would have followed Kelly to the USFL.

  86. Pa Privateer Says:

After watching some of the Sperbeck highlights I really like him. He has some crazy hands and focus. The numbers are not in his favor at WR but maybe he could be the #6. I like him more than most of the last year’s leftovers. Maybe he could be a returner? At least try to hide him on the practice squad.

  87. LakeLandBuc Says:

We traded our 1984 1st round pick in 1983 to the Bengals for an already washed-up Jack Thompson. The pick became the top overall pick in 1984…Then the Bengals traded the pick to the Patriots for two 1st round picks, a 5th round pick and a 10th round pick. So we gave up 4 picks for a washed up Jack Thompson who played 19 games for us, before he retired at the age of 28.

  88. PRBucFan Says:

The picks they spun in a trade don’t by default become picks we gave up… lolol
