Jackson = Yards

April 15th, 2017

Even with WR DeSean Jackson, Bucs may need more speed.

There is one thing winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter has groused about this offseason more than Joe kvetches about warm beer.

That is explosive plays.

Koetter has a valid point. That’s why the Bucs went out and signed speedy wideout DeSean Jackson. In fact, per the research of Scott Barrett of the PFF tribe, Jackson is nothing if not an explosive play.

@ScottBarrettDFB: Since targets became a stat, there have been only 10 seasons where a WR reached 1K yards on 100 or fewer targets. Three were DeSean Jackson.

And one of seasons was last year, so there really isn’t a sign Jackson is slipping.

Still, if Jackson gets hurt, and history suggests he will miss a game or two, the Bucs are right back into the crapwagon they had last year. That’s why Joe is all but convinced the Bucs will draft a receiver in the first two rounds, a speedy guy to groom behind Jackson and spell him when he misses an occasional game.

That drafted receiver could also become a return guy, and the Bucs sorely need a kickoff return guy (yes, the Bucs are content with Rudy Humphries returning punts — don’t kill the messenger, please).

That’s why USC triple-threat Adoree’ Jackson intrigues Joe a great deal. He can catch the ball on offense, he is a sick return man and he could be a starting corner.

The Bucs sure could use a guy like Jackson.

If they draft Jackson and keep V-Jax with the addition of Flash Jackson. That would be 3 Jackson’s at WR on the same team. LOL. Has that even ever happened before?

Kobe Faker Evaluation of Desean Jackson

I spend have my time near philly and i have watched every minute of Djax for 6 years as an eagle

Since Djax entered the league, there has been and still isnt a better deep route reciever in the league. No serious injury and his football speed has not noticiably dropped. What he does, he still does very well

Maturity, personanilty,teammate- Djax as a older man and individual, we are fortunate to have the mature wiser player than his childish selfish look at me hot head during his early years in philly

What can Djax bring and what he cant- Djax is NOT a slot reciever. He does not eant to catch the ball front of linebackers/safeties. He is the best at catching deep routes and used as decoy for anything underneath. Djax does not “layout” to catch balls. He runs through and catches balls with his legs always on the ground. Djax is more limited closer and the redzone. He will get his tds running after catch into the end zone

**Mike Evans and Djax is a great combo But they do their best in the same 3rd tier area of the field. Both lack in catching off the LOS and running after catch.

**we stiill need a jarvis landry/golden tate/hilton/crowder/s shepardor separating TE to punish the defense in the short middle of the field. Only with this type player can jameis really go into no huddle offense

Tradeup to get Cory Davis and we will be in the 2017 championship game

    Wow!

  7. rayjay1122 Says:

Yes to Cory Davis if we could get him. Though we most likely would have to trade up a few spots to get ahead of thr Titans who will most likely draft a WR at #18. Adoree’ Jackson would also be a good fit though I have not seen where he is projected to get picked.

  11. ManzielMadness Says:

Wow. Just saw the video, kid’s a freak. Just baits the opposing QB… not to mention he’s a weapon every time he has the ball in his hands.

  12. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Corey Davis isn’t going to happen. The Bucs love Hump and we aren’t going to a 4 WR offense. Maybe a round 2 or 3 WR, but no room for another potential #1. If the Bucs weren’t so high on Hump I’d entertain the possibility, but I think 1st round WR is out of the picture.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

DeSean Jackson has only reached 1K yards 50% of the last 6 years though. Only 5 times in his entire career.

Walker will get more yards this season. As I’ve been saying for months.

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

BuccaneEric75, didn’t Koetter play 4 WRs a bunch in Atlanta? I think he has not done it here simply because of the low talent level.

But I don’t think he’s take one in round 1 either.

  15. Kevinthepainterimagine Says:

Koetter lovea runnung 4 wide. His first year lovie smith mr. Conservative would never have that kind of playcalling on his team. Koetters second year he was obviously more conservative being his first year ever as a head coach. There is plenty of room for a first round reciever. We now how 30 plus age starters at both wr and cb, so jackson would make a lot of sense…I love mccafftey and would be stoked if they pick him but I have a feeling there will be no rb in round one…

  16. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I don’t get why Bucs fans like Adoree Jackson. I saw him helping the opposing teams players up. I thought that was frowned upon in Tampa?

  17. Mojiska Says:

Im a southern california guy, live just north of LA my whole life and have followed USC for a long time. (My grandfather played fullback at usc when gifford was there). Adoree is a freak athlete, but a big time project at anything but returner. He is lazy and relies on his speed way too much at cb, gets caught looking in the backfield and trying to bait qbs. On offense he would be a player similar to gabriel or tyreek hill after 2-3 years of learning. Love the dudes game and potential, but he would not contribute much in year 1-2 in anything but return game. I would rather have someone that can plug and play in round 1. If he is there in the 2nd tho, grab him.

The one to watch is juju. He is a mean physical receiver, would be great in the slot due to his agression and yac ability and he would be able to take over the #2 role when d jax is gone. He is only 20 and would be around for a long time. He plays thru injuries and has a passion like jameis.

  18. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Koetter probably does like 4 wides, but how often do NFL teams run that set? Mostly on 3rd and long, witch happens, what, 5-10 times a game? Do we really want to spend a 1st round pick on a guy who will only play less than 10% of the offensive snaps until DJax is gone? I like Davis, but a 1st round WR is a pick we might make in 2 years when we need it, not now. We could get a WR in the 2nd or 3rd who can come in and make a splash on those downs. A 1st round pick needs to start from day 1. The Bucs like thier top 3 WR. Don’t make a 1st round pick ride the bench for most of the game.

  19. Mojiska Says:

Just because they like hump isnt a legit excuse to play him above a guy like davis if drafted. Davis would be the #3 receiver from day 1 if drafted. He is better than hump, not even a question.

  20. Bobby M. Says:

The teams that win Super Bowls or at least contend regularly ALL can get after the QB….Our draft needs to focus on a defensive rush vs building a Pro Bowl starting lineup on offense for a QB the local media likes to hail as the franchise savior yet seems to need more weapons then Freeman needed to succeed.

  21. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Mojiska, first, Davis has never played a down in the NFL. Many 1st round WRs bust. It’s just a guess that he’s better than Hump, we don’t know for sure. Second, if the Bucs like Hump, they won’t draft his replacement. More likely a WR in round 2 or later.

  22. mike10 Says:

So you mention a guy we can draft who could fill 3 positions of need, yet you’re all in on drafting a RB who has had THREE shoulder surgeries?

Let’s get our priorities in line.

  23. bucs_365 Says:

That highlight reel is sick. Get him. I’d trade a pick in next year’s draft to make sure we get him.

  24. Couch Fan Says:

We would have an A-Jax, D-Jax and V-Jax. Love it!

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    BuccaneEric75 Says
“Do we really want to spend a 1st round pick on a guy who will only play less than 10% of the offensive snaps until DJax is gone?

I know I don’t. But signing V Jackson would fit the bill without costing us a pick this year.

  26. Joe Says:

I don’t get why Bucs fans like Adoree Jackson. I saw him helping the opposing teams players up. I thought that was frowned upon in Tampa?

    Uh, oh!

  27. Mojiska Says:

@buccaneereric- by that logic they would never draft cook because koetter really likes jaquizz.

  28. tnew Says:

Mojiska.. I agree 100% this kid is so raw. The only thing that he would be great for is returns and the random gadget plays. He is a long way from ready on the corner. He struggles with speed, because he relies so heavily on his make up speed. When he sees a real double move the only thing to hope for is that the QB underthrows the ball.

He does have very good ball skills but when you watch his technique, its just not that good.

Now… if you told me that he was going to play Free Safety. I would listen and agree 100% and maybe this is what the Bucs are thinking. Put him at free, Take the technical aspects of learning corner off of his plate, let him just use instincts. He likes to tackle. Great ball skills. Covers so much ground. Plays the ball in the air well, in fact he might (this is a guess) be better at safety than Peppers.

Joe if you want to sell me this kid as a Safety I’m all ears. But his cover skills are just too raw for a first round pick.

This would be a trade down in the first or trade up in the second. He’s not a 19 imo.

Watch his tape, not the highlights. Then see what he does.

  29. Cool Says:

Anything but an running back please

  30. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Mojiska, not accurate. We already HAVE 3 starting receivers. We NEED a #1 RB. If we draft Cook, Jaquizz still keeps his role as a #2 or, if you like Sims, #3 RB and if Koetter was really high on Jaquizz, he would have been in camp from the start, like Hump. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have 4 nice WR like Kurt Warners Rams, but I’d rather draft a guy later to be the #4 and wait until DJax is done to draft a #2.

  31. Mojiska Says:

Eric, i think we disagree on the 3 starting receivers. I dont think hump is viewed as a starting receiver. Same with quiz. But my point is that koetter has openly said how much he likes both of these guys. But just becaise he likes someone doesnt mean he is intending on them playing a prominent role in the offense. Hump is special teams and depth, but koetter likes him ij those roles. Davis would be an immediate upgrade to the #3 and should be able to take over #2 duties within 2 years. If you wait to fill a need when you NEED to, someone not working out completely screws you. Id rathrr have jacksons eventual replacement in place before he is gone.

  32. Dirks GreatGranpappy Says:

Kobe works at one buc but spends half the year in philly?

  33. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Mojiska, I disagree about Hump, but I agree that we could add another WR to be DJax replacement in this draft or next, but it doesn’t have to be a 1st round pick. 1st rounders should be for #1 WRs. I’d be totally cool with Zay Jones in the 2nd round. First round picks need to play and not displace solid players that we already have. My only exception to that would be DE. We’ll need Ayers replacement soon and DEs take a year to get in the groove. I’d be down with a DE then WR and trade back up for a RB. That goes out the window if we draft Cook.

  34. Kobe Faker Says:

    Be nice gramps

Will be at the draft night thursday at philly stalking Jenna Laine

Will have plenty of pictures for everyone!

****Any tristate bucfans want to meet at draftnight at philly?

  35. Broy34 Says:

Sooooo obvious they’re not getting Corey Davis. Except the multiple visits… Y’all know squat

  36. Mojiska Says:

Eric- i get ya. And i like zay a lot in the 2nd, along with juju and godwin. I think thats the best value for wr. But i think we need to upgrade that position badly, we are an injury away from being really bad. My personal hope is de, wr, rb, s in the first 4 rounds in that order. But i would be happy with njoku or howard in the first or engram in the 2nd too. Im just super happy we dont HAVE to go a certain direction in the first this year.

  37. SB Says:

    Godwin.

  38. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Mojiska, I agree. If they do go Cook in round 1 I’d be cool with that too.

  39. Joe Says:

Willing to lay cash she won’t be there. She’s usually at One Buc Palace.

Should Joe text her to confirm???

  40. Capt.Tim Says:

    Dirks GG- lmao!

If we draft Adoree, hes gonba start his career as a kick returner and
    (Drum role)
    Wide Reciever.
A lil seasoning, and the kid could do real damage!

I think the Bucs are starting to really heat up for Adoree.
If their two choices at DE are gone
I think it will come down to Adoree Jackson or Derek Barnett.
And right now- I’d put my money on Adoree.
Koetter is obsessed with getting a kick returner

  41. Gilhealy Says:

I wish I was Kobe. That should be a fun night. Corey Davis is going to grow into one of the best in the League. Great build, almost Calvin Johnson like. When he fills out, he’ll be hell. That cat in the slot at times, #2 at others, would be sweet. Do we know if Antone Smith is returning? Koetter likes his wheels. With the field opening up, I can see a lot of shorter, go get some yards, throws this season. Yac is what it’s all about. Whoever they pick, it will be the most dangerous for this offense they deem. Open it up. Fire the cannons….often.

  42. Kobe Faker Says:

    2 not joes

You guys heading to drafttown philly? Love to say hi and meet you guys. (I have a feeling only 1 of you not joes like me. The 1 with the whiney voice probably threatened to bann me numerous times)
