Conte Not “Safe”

April 8th, 2017

Opposing coaches mock him.

Do opposing NFL coaches really have a book on fan favorite Chris Conte, or are they trying to weaken the Bucs?

Good guy Andy Benoit of theMMQB.com broke down NFC South teams on his Twitter feed and peeled off the onion skin on the secondary of the Bucs when his attention turned to safety.

Benoit sounded like a few Bucs fans who seem to be hot-in-the-pants for drafting this Jabril Peppers of Michigan. Benoit stated Conte is simply not “safe.”

@Andy_Benoit: Conte was re-signed, he’s not a safe starter. Have had coaches tell me they felt last yr he was most vulnerable S in NFL.

Now if Conte really is the hot steaming pile of feces fans and these unnamed coaches think he is, then why exactly did the Bucs bring him back? If winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter felt Conte wasn’t an asset, then he likely would have called Verizon, pretended to be Team Glazer, and gotten Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht’s cell service cut.

Licht’s been around the league a few times. Anyone actually think he would bring Conte back if he was this horrible? Only crazy people and Lovie Smith sign players who don’t belong in the NFL (that’s the only logical reason Joe can find for Lovie’s mind-numbing transactions).

Coaches telling Benoit that Conte is among the very worst safties seems odd. If Conte is truly this bad, then wouldn’t those coaches want him to stay?

Chicago hated Conte too, it’s not like the Conte hate is new, he’s average at best minus 1-2 really good games, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes!

  2. gotbbucs Says:

He’s a special teamer and thats where you’ll most frequently see him this year. He’ll take the special team snaps that they lost with Sheppard leaving.
They’ll draft a starting caliber safety in this draft and Conte will be the first to be demoted.

  3. meh Says:

You bring him back because it’s a cheap deal and you aren’t certain you will get a chance to draft his replacement.

  4. d-roca Says:

He stepped up and made some splash plays last year finally. I can name some safetys who didnt. The un named sources will say anything. If he starts he is our best option n lets get behind him. Go bucs

  5. Capt.Tim Says:

    BS.
“Unnamed people” seem to always support the position of the person quoting them.
Mike Smith is a GREAT defensive coordinator, and likes Chris Conte!

That means more than any talking head, and his imaginary friends.
Or any imaginary experts posting here.

Smiths defense is very complicated for the Safeties. They all played like crap the first couple games.
Once they started to get comfortable- both Conte and Tandy became playmakers. Not unusual to take a bit to learn a new defense.

We need a young safety- to start the learning process. Just not an early pick
    (Fish Smithson!!)
Jabril Peppers will develop in to a great Weakside linebacker.
His coverage skills arent good enough.
Hes Mark Barron- who I said the same thing about- loudly- right here on Joebuc.
    Until we cut him
And he became a good Weakside Linebacker with the Rams

  6. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I am a Michigan Guy, but scared of us taking Peppers.
His coverage skills scare me too, especially at the NFL level.

  7. The Buc Realist Says:

We tried to tell you Joe, That CC23 at best is a cheap backup!!! We tried to tell you that AM74 was going to play center!!!! And news flash,The Bucs are going to get the interior line set, then next year, if DS76 does not make a big jump, he will be moved to RT and the Bucs will draft a top LT moving DD69 to backup swing tackle for both!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!

  8. DallasBuc Says:

“Only crazy people and Lovie Smith sign players who don’t belong in the NFL”
Someone please remind me who the GM was when incompetent Lovie Smith was here and who the GM is now? Was incompetent Lovie Smith also the GM then and Koetter is the GM now? Or are these guys the GM for all the bad choices and Licht gets all the GM credit for the choices you like and approve of?
Still running cover for your BFF and business partner GM. Definitely NOT a conflict of interest!

  9. duthsty rhothdes Says:

The same GM who has yet to address the crappy OL? Franchise QB with a JV OL, hope they get an LT round 1 and move turnstile to RT… weird DJ Swearinger who licht cut was in high demand at safety this offseason

  10. SB Says:

Dallas, Lovie had complete and total control over who came to this team. It was a prerequisite to him being hired. Stop pretending that Licht was anything more than a figurehead at that time.

  11. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Conte’ s stats prove he is horrible. He is always ranked near the bottom. And I hate to tell you Joe but Licht has missed on signings as well. Not sure where that comment came from. We screwed up signing Conte over McDougal

  12. Capt.Tim Says:

    Funky,
McDougal took a pay cut to be a backup, after scouring the league for a job.
His greatness must be your lil secret.
But you cannstill follow him. Just watch the Seattle bench.

  13. DallasBuc Says:

SB- do you really believe that the Glazers hired/paid a GM to fetch coffee and donuts? Who’s pretending? And if that were true do you think he would still be here after incompetent Lovie Smith was canned?
You need to stop pretending that every perceived poor decision over the last 3+ years is not Licht’s fault and every perceived good decision is Licht’s pure genius. He is the GM. He is paid like a GM and he has the control of a GM. He deserves all the praise and criticism associated with being a GM.
Stop making excuses and stop pretending.

  14. Not there yet Says:

He knows the scheme so yea it makes sense but it’s not like they’ve committed to him long term which days he had to earn his spot. I think Tandy and a high draft pick at safety makes him expendable

  15. Bucballbaby84 Says:

Free agency waa a crap show for safeties this year. There was only two really good safeties and then there was two decent safeties and then the rest were bottom of the barrel starters. The bucs either had to pay a ton of money to get one of the top two free agent safeties which wasn’t going to happen cause their trying to be smart with their money cause they have huge contracts coming up for jameis, mike Evans, Ali marpet, Donovan smith. The two decent safeties already signed elsewhere before even giving the bucs a thought. The rest of them were in the same pool as conte. There was one who is above average who had legal troubles and got himself suspended for the first 8 games and no way the bucs would’ve signed a guy who was suspended for 8 games of the season. Trust in Licht man!!!!!!!

  16. Dirks GreatGranpappy Says:

    Dallas and dusty

Look at the signings and drafts since lovie has left and compare them to when lovie was here.

Also outside of the cowboys show me 5 o lines that are legit? Beastly o lines are not commonplace. We can still add to the line with roster cuts or udfa.

You guys are an embarrassment to buc nation and the tool d bags of this website. God forbid the Bucs get national recognition and jbf becomes a nationally respected media outlet. The rest of the country will laugh at us bc fools like you are on here spewing immature trash

Btw I really do hope we get to that point bc It means the Bucs are ballin out and the joes can be recognized for their incredible work

    Now go eat your crow

  17. Dirks GreatGranpappy Says:

Lovie was hired with full control over the roster. JL was a first time gm hired to not rock the boat at that time

  18. Lamarcus Says:

C mon. Conte is nothing more than a backup to Tandy.

  19. duthsty rhothdes Says:

Dirks granpappy first off i think its great sun city center has internet and read the above on licht… HE IS THE GM… he got rid of 2 pro bowl OL and signed the crap replacements… thebucs have a franchise qb protect him….PS… did lovie text jason gump to draft the 2nd round kicker?

  20. SOEbuc Says:

I’m thinking Conte is purely backup and if he’s not I will be purely pissed.

  21. Bucballbaby84 Says:

No matter what anyone says about licht there is only one group of ppls opinion on him that matters and thats the glazers and they love him so you might as well get used to him being around for a while or find a new team to be a fan of. In Licht we trust!!!!!!

  22. DallasBuc Says:

Granpappy- we are the immature trash and you are the guy calling grown men you don’t know and never met “tool d bags” for having a different opinion on sports than you? Thanks for setting a good example for us embarrassments to Buc nation. Think we will go eat our crow now because you really nailed us with your unassailable takes on the matter!
Listen old man, go choke down your heart medicine with a bottle of ensure and take a nap because you’ve really worn yourself out defending your hero GM and kissing the joes’ stinkholes!
Catch you on the other side gramps.

  23. Bucballbaby84 Says:

No doubt in my mind he will be a backup. If they don’t draft a starting safety then Wilcox and Tandy will be the starters with conte being a rotational guy and special teams guy.

  24. BucTrooper Says:

Only crazy people and Lovie Smith sign players who don’t belong in the NFL….

Guess that means Mark Domink. He re-signed Michael Clayton.

  25. BigHogHaynes Says:

I hear people say LOVIE had complete control… that it was in his contract….well will someone please get that contract and put it up on this site until the please stop with the Bull Sh*t!!

  26. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

I don’t understand the fascination with peppers. The guy is trash. Great athlete, but ZERO ball skills. Mark Barron 2.0. Is he a lber? Is he a safety? Please don’t draft this bum

  27. webster Says:

How many times do i have to post links of articles thats showed lovie had final say over the 53 man roster. That does not mean he picked all 90 + players that competed in training camp. How many times do i have to post links of articles that stated licht was in charge of the draft. If you think licht took a job with the type of experience he had just to do what lovie told him to do, then you are idiots. Sure lovie wanted his guys ie conte etc and as a gm, licht got his players. Thats no different then licht getting hawley and rodgers for koetter. A coach and a gm should work together, but to think lovie made all personnell decisions regardless of what licht wanted is a foolish assestment. I refused to post links for the 100th time dispelling that ludicrous notion.

  28. Tampa Tony Says:

Tape doesn’t lie, he was bad for the majority of the season

  29. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Peppers at 19 been saying along time! Or TE at 19 and safety at 50 and running back 3rd round!

  30. unbelievable Says:

I’m sure Andy Reid could speak to that notion of what opposing coaches think about conte

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I am 100% in favor of drafting a safety in the first or second round.

But Conte isn’t the reason. Wilcox is. He is nowhere near good enough to replace Macdougald.

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Malik Hooker or Jamal Adams would make me very happy.

  33. DB55 Says:

    Rhetorical question right joe?

Conte is straight garbage he’s on the Bucs cuz we like to sign garbage.

  34. Joe Says:

We tried to tell you that AM74 was going to play center!!!!

Joe has been on that train since Jason Licht said the weekend he drafted Marpet that he graded out as a center. That’s like you saying you tried to tell Joe beer is wet.

  35. Chris Says:

I would like the kid from UConn

  36. gotbbucs Says:

Bighog….Lovie had full control over the 53 man roster and Lovie hired Licht. Who do you think was pulling the strings, especially that first year.
Lovie gloated himself that he spent his season off in his basement scouring the NFL for the players he wanted for when he got another chance to coach.
The draft was Lichts show because scouting college kids bored Lovie to death, so in that regard, yes Licht had some bumps in the road there. I really don’t think it probably took Licht very long to figure out how much of a buffoon Lovie was and started taking it upon himself to try and right some wrongs. The biggest wrong he corrected was the Glazers decision to hire that steaming pile, Lovie Smith. I don’t care how many times Licht had to stab Lovie in the back to get his a$$ out of here, it had to be done.

  37. DraftJameis Says:

Maybe I’m naive, but Benoit having a couple of off-the-cuff conversations with head coaches and them being candid about someone as irrelevant as Chris Conte isn’t that unbelievable to me. You think Jack Del Rio cares if Conte is a safety in the league or a car salesman? Not every coach is Belichick about stuff like that.
